Anger at Afghan warsparked Britain scandalLONDON, 25 Sept — A “mole” who leaked data on

lawmakers’ expenses, sparking Britain’s biggest po-litical scandal in years, was angry about a lack of re-sources for troops in Afghanistan, a newspaper saidon Friday.

The unnamed worker was incensed by a perceivedfailure to properly equip British soldiers in Afghani-stan, at a time when politicians filed lavish expensesclaims, according to the newspaper that published theleaks.

The Daily Telegraph published weeks of materialearlier this year showing how members of parliament(MPs) claimed expenses from the public purse for eve-rything from a duck island to moat cleaning and ten-nis court repairs.

“It’s not easy to watch footage on the televisionnews of a coffin draped in a Union Jack and then comein to work the next day and see on your computerscreen what MPs are taking for themselves,” theworker, a civilian, said.—Internet

It includes a cup of aloe juice, a cup ofnutritious milk shake and a cup of herbaltea. It is said to provide all you need inthe morning for energy, nutrition andhydration.

Molecule might block the spread of cancerNEW HAVEN, 25

Sept— US and Chinesescientists say a piece ofgenetic material with nopreviously knownfunction might hold thekey to being able to stopthe spread of cancer.

Researchers at YaleUniversity’s School ofMedicine and SichuanUniversity in Chengdu,China, found in a study ofmice an RNA moleculethat can bind to and blockthe function of proto-oncogenes — genes thathave the potential totrigger cancer.

The researchers, led by

Professor Alan Garenat Yale and Xu Songin China, said onemechanism that stops cellproliferation is a familyof tumor-suppressorproteins. The TSP proteinthey discovered, calledPSF, is virtually identicalin mice and humans, theysaid.

The Yale team said itsucceeded in preventingthe formation of tumors inmice by either increasing

the amount of PSF ordecreasing the amount ofthe non-coding RNA in acell. “The tumor cell stopsproliferating and the tumorregresses in a mouse modelof cancer, suggesting thatboth procedures could bethe basis of a clinicalprotocol,” said Garen.

The study appeared inthe Sept 11 issue of theProceedings of theNational Academy ofSciences.—Internet

‘Green’ roofs could counterglobal warming

EAST LANSING, 25 Sept — A Michigan State Universitystudy has determined “green roofs” — those covered withplants — could help fight global warming.

The scientists, led by horticulturist Kristin Getter andProfessor Brad Rowe, found replacing traditional roofingmaterials with green plants in an urban area with a populationof about 1 million, would be equivalent to eliminating ayear’s worth of carbon dioxide emitted by 10,000 mid-sizedsport utility vehicles and trucks.

The researchers said their study is the first of its kind toexamine the ability of green roofs to sequester carbon, which may impact climate change. Getter and colleaguessay scientists have known green roofs also absorb carbondioxide, a major greenhouse gas that contributes to globalwarming, but nobody had measured the impact until now.

The scientists said they measured carbon levels in plantand soil samples collected from 13 green roofs in Michiganand Maryland during a two-year period. They found greenroofing an urban area of about 1 million people wouldcapture more than 55,000 tons of carbon.

The research is to be reported in the 1 Oct issue of thejournal Environmental Science & Technology.—Internet

A group of European,Australian and USscientists say humans havepushed the Earth systembeyond three of theplanet’s biophysicalthresholds.

The 29 scientistssay the consequences ofthose actions might becatastrophic for large partsof the world.

equivalent to some of thegreat forces of nature —just by going about theirdaily lives.

That force has given riseto a new era —Anthropocene — in whichhuman actions havebecome the main driver ofglobal environmentalchange, the scientists said.

“On a finite planet, atsome point, we will tip thevital resources we relyupon into irreversibledecline if our consumptionis not balanced withregenerative andsustainable activity,” saidreport co-author Sandervan der Leeuw, director ofthe School of HumanEvolution and SocialChange at Arizona StateUniversity.

Brain pathway that regulates weight ID’dNEW HAVEN, 25 Sept— US scientists say they have identified a new brain pathway

that’s responsible for regulating a person’s weight and bone mass.Yale University researchers said their discovery contradicts the view that the

hormone leptin acts primarily in the brain area know as the hypothalamus. The researchers, led by Professor Tasas Horvath, said they discovered leptin, which

is critical for normal food intake and metabolism, appears to regulate bone mass andsuppress appetite by acting mainly through serotonin pathways in the brain.“Our studychallenges the view that the hypothalamus is the critical brain site where leptin actsdirectly to alter neuronal circuit function to suppress appetite and bone metabolism,”Horvath said. “We’ve now found a novel explanation for how leptin can act on thebrain.”To determine whether leptin regulates bone mass through serotonin pathways,Horvath and his colleagues analyzed multiple lines of mice that were geneticallyaltered to remove serotonin in the brain.—Internet

Fear of back pain, predicts back painCOPENHAGEN, 25 Sept

MANCHESTER, 25 Sept—Manchester United managerAlex Ferguson has decided against dropping BenFoster following an erratic display by the Englandgoalkeeper in last weekend’s derby win over ManchesterCity. With United’s first-choice keeper, Edwin van derSar, still sidelined with broken fingers, Ferguson gaveFoster a vote of confidence by confirming he wouldstart the Premier League match at Stoke on Saturday.Tomasz Kuszczak had made a strong case for promotionabove Foster in the United pecking order with aconfident display and a clean sheet in the League Cupwin over Wolves on Wednesday.

But Ferguson continues to regard Foster as a betterlong-term prospect and does not want to risk furtherundermining the Englishman’s confidence after hegifted City their first goal in United’s 4-3 win at OldTrafford.

“It was a good opportunity for Tomasz to play onWednesday but Ben will play tomorrow,” Fergusonsaid Friday. “Ben has not had a lot of game experiencebut he will be OK.” Stoke provide a tough test for anygoalkeeper with their effectiveness at set-plays and thelong-throws of Rory Delap requiring good commandof the penalty area. Ferguson expects van der Sar totake anot her three weeks to complete his recoveryfrom breaking two fingers in a pre-season game againstBayern Munich in July.—Internet

The whole nation has now seen numerous damsand reservoirs intended to effectively utilize river waterand rainwater all-year round for the agricultural pur-pose.

Now, Pakokku, which used to be an arid regionin those days, has become re-greening with thrivingagricultural farms thanks to Mingan Dam near Mingan

Village, Myaing Township, Pakokku District, MagwayDivision, which was put into commission on 30 July2008. Rainwater is collected into Mingan Dam in therainy season to irrigate nearby farmlands, without lettingit flow away. As a result, local people now enjoy foodsafety and adequate potable water.

The earthen type irrigation facility was constructed

by damming the Padauk Creek near Mingan Village. Itis 40 feet high and 2100 feet long with the maximumwater storage capacity of 390 acre feet. It makes signifi-

cant contribution towards regional greening and ben-efits 200 acres of farmlands of paddy farms and othercrops.

Owing to the dam, local farmers can grow cropswith irrigation water not only in the rainy season but alsoin summer, thus enjoying better socio-economic life.
