AWS Ocean Energy Ltd
AWS Ocean Energy is a Scottish company established to commercialise theArchimedes Wave Swing or AWS wave energy technology
The unique, patented AWS technology will deliver the step-change in
economics needed to make commercial wave power a reality. AWS OceanEnergy has acquired all of the IP rights to this technology
We have tested the technology at full-scale in open water (Portugal 2004)
We have recently raised 2million of institutional investment allowing us toimplement our business plans
We intend to install a pre-commercial demonstrator during 2008. This will befunded via a stock-market (AiM) floatation
Our business model is to deliver the AWS product via strategic partnershipswhilst retaining the IP development within AWS Ocean Energy

Technology principles
The AWS is a submerged air-filled
piston that expands and contracts in
response to wave pressures
Relative movement of the two partsof the device is converted directly to
electricity by a linear generator
Resonant system that can be tuned
to predominant waves
First commercial units rated at
1.25MW sufficient to power 625
homes large wind turbineequivalent
Utility scale, high efficiency, simple,
robust design, minimal maintenance

AWS Advantages
The AWS has unique advantages due to its sub-
sea location and the unique way in which it
captures power
Storm avoidance in retracted position and robust
design provides high survivability
The minimal maintenance which can be carried out
on-station by ROV provides high availability
High power density reduces footprint and makes
AWS the natural choice for utility developers Environmental impact is minimal and positive effects
on marine life may be experienced
High energy production per tonne of steel ensures
competitive economics
Safety for operatives and other maritime stakeholders
built-in
Key considerations for utility customers making
AWS the only real choice

Technology verification
The AWS was successfully tested at full scaleoffshore Portugal in October 2004
The tests verified the technology delivering
AWS wave power to the Portuguese grid Power capture met predicted levels and
numerical models are verified for future work
The simplicity and resilience of the device was
demonstrated
The development team gained significant
experience
The operations were carried out without
expensive O & G sector vessels
Selected top in significant 3rd party reviews
Several electricity utilities
Major oil & gas company

AWS MK II Demonstrator project
Pilot plant in Portugal was designed to test technology at full scale but wasnot designed as a long-term demonstrator
Pilot plant was not optimised as a pre-commercial product
Next stage in development process is to achieve long-term demonstration of
the pre-commercial product hence AWS MK II
Key aims for demonstrator are:
Demonstrate safe and reliable construction and deployment
Demonstrate device performance over several seasons
Demonstrate AWS advantages in survivability and low environmental impact
Demonstrate safe and reliable operation and maintenance
Prove initial cost models and verify possibilities for cost reduction to allow pre-
commercial projects
Demonstrator scale to be sufficiently large to provide credible demonstration
of technology whilst containing cost and technical risk

EU FP6 Project aims
The Proposed EU FP6 has the following specific aims:
Demonstrate practicality of construction process and provide cost indicators for
future cost reduction
Demonstrate practicality, safety and reliability of deployment process
Demonstrate power capture and verify numerical models
Demonstrate survivability in extreme conditions
Demonstrate reliability over full operating range
Demonstrate operational features, including remote shut-down & safety
Demonstrate maintenance procedures
Monitor and assess the environmental effects
Monitor and assess effects on other marine users
Provide a comprehensive report and disseminate information
However for budget reasons only certain key parts of work are to be
supported under the programme

A view of the future 2050 vision
World energy demand has doubled in 40 years, driven bypopulation growth and economic development in the thirdworld
Development of hydrogen and other enabling technologies
removes current geographical and variability constraints tocontribution by renewables
Environmental and consumer concerns dictate that renewablesprovide a significant proportion of world energy
A mature wave power industry with utility scale developmentsbeing promoted world-wide
Annual capital expenditure on wave power in excess of 1.0billion
AWS Ocean Energy is the global leader in provision of wavepower solutions and expertise with annual profits in excess of150 million
