Lifting Operation is one of the most hazardous

    operations in a working site

    The hazards can harm:

The people directly involved with the operation

The people not involve with the operation but

    working in adjacent areas

The equipment used for the operationThe equipment and structures in adjacent areas

    Preventive measures for

    avoiding power line contacts.

    Planning for power linehazards.

    Dealing with power line

    emergencies.

    Electrical Hazards

    How to Control the Hazard:

Follow the OSHAs power line clearance distances.

ANSI requirements for working around power lines.

Safe working clearance distance for cranes.

    Eliminate by de-energizing and

    visibly grounding the line.

    Control; if the power line

    cannot be de-energized or

    moved, then take precautionary

    measures and have a written

    plan.

    Electrical Hazards

    How to Control the Hazard:

Locate all the power lines on the job site

Identify and determine which activities and equipment

will be at risk of contacting a power line.

What if a crane contacts a power cable

    Electrical Hazards

The crane operator should try to remove the crane

from contact by moving it in the reverse direction from

    that which caused the contact.

If the crane cannot be moved away from contact, the

operator should remain inside cab until the lines have

    been de-energized.

If the crane operator must leave the equipmentbecause of a more immediate hazard, then this person

must jump clear from the equipment and shuffle their

    feet in small steps.

    Control of Hazard:

Barricade the swing area of the equipment using

barriers, warning chain or anything that will prevent

people from entering the hazardous area

Make sure that the audible (siren) and visible

(revolving light) warnings features of the crane are

always operating when the crane is swinging

Ensure the work area is safe for the crane and the

surrounding area is safe for other operatives:

The area is clear and level

There are no excavations that could cause

    collapse

No operatives are working in the lifting zone

If other vehicles have to pass is there room?

    There are no overhead cables
