WELCOME MESSAGESWELCOME MESSAGES
WELCOME MESSAGESNEW ZEALAND RUGBYKia ora koutou,
On behalf of New Zealand Rugby, I am pleased to welcome the All Blacks and Wallabies, the match officials and all the rugby supporters to Auckland for today’s Bledisloe Cup presented by Investec.
It is worth pausing for a moment to truly appreciate how special it is to be here in our largest city, enjoying a live sports match together, once again. Last week’s match in Wellington was a thriller, and both teams will be even more determined for a win today. Both teams will have spent the last week working extra hard at training to deliver an even better performance today and take with them bragging rights.
I’d like to give a big thank you to the sponsors and partners of our respective Unions as their support for rugby is essential in making today’s match possible. We are proud you have supported rugby through what has been a very challenging year and thanks to our collective efforts and commitment to rugby we can all be here today to enjoy live sport.
Our thanks also go to Auckland Rugby and Eden Park for all the hard work that’s gone into ensuring this afternoon’s match is a great event for fans, partners and teams. And, I acknowledge the fantastic contribution of the many volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make this afternoon’s match possible. Lastly, I want to thank all our match officials who are an essential part of the contest.
To all rugby supporters, whether you’re watching the match at the ground or afar, thank you for getting behind our sport. I hope you all enjoy the rugby.
BILL OSBORNENew Zealand Rugby President
ADIDASAdidas welcomes you to Eden Park to witness the All Blacks return to Test rugby for the first time since the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Safe to say, we’ve been craving this moment for a long time.
It is moments like this that makes us appreciate the return of sport. The time away from rugby gives us the chance to reflect on what makes it so special, what we’ve missed, even down to the smallest detail. Something highlighted in a conversation we had with Sam Cane a few weeks ago: “What surprised me was how many friends, and friendships that you have within your team, and how much you miss the small chats before training when you’re all lying around stretching, preparing for training; the chats in between the sets at the gym, and just a lot of the banter that goes with being in a sports team.”
This sense of unity is what makes the All Blacks so unique to us watching from the stadium. It is a team that straddles respect for its legacy with ambition for its future. Something Sam Cane in particular has been reflecting on during his time away – “Successful regeneration is obviously not an easy thing to do, and over years, teams change, and often big chunks of the team move on. But that’s the challenge of upholding a strong history and record.
“When you put on the All Black jersey, you’re playing for something bigger than yourself, bigger than your current team; you’re playing for everyone who’s gone and played beforehand, and to be honest, it feels like you’re playing for the majority of the country too.”
But it’s a challenge they don’t shy away from. And they’ll be looking to put on a show for us all. Beauden Barrett, Aaron Smith and Sam Cane and team, will showcase the imagination and passion maintained through the pause in sport, that has enabled the All Blacks stay at the top of the game.
Now they are ready for sport once more, this match perhaps means something to each of us that we haven’t had in recent years. That true excitement of when the whistle blows. Of almost seeing it renewed. How it can make us feel. How it can bring people together. Safely of course.
So the All Blacks are ready. And raring to go. And so, are we. We hope everyone stays safe and enjoys the game.
Join us @adidasrugby in showing the team our collective support with the hashtag #ReadyForSport

JIM KAYES
Jordie Barrett is bustled into touch during the opening Bledisloe Cup clash at Sky Stadium
It was a lifetime ago.
Our electoral system was still first past-the-post, David Lange was the PM, TV3 didn’t exist and a Rugby World Cup was yet to be played.
1986. The last time the Wallabies beat the All Blacks at Eden Park. And it was a 22-9 thrashing at a time when tries were still worth four points.
None of the All Blacks who will take the field in Sunday’s second Bledisloe Cup Test against Australia at Eden Park were born when that match was played in 1986 but that run of success in Auckland will loom over them.
Add to the 1986 streak the fact the All Blacks haven’t lost to anyone at Eden Park since 1994 and you don’t want to be the first team to lose there in such a long time.
Especially coming off the back of the 16-16 draw in Wellington.
It is rare for the All Blacks to have consecutive defeats (a draw isn’t a loss, I know, but it’s not a win either) yet they drew with South Africa in Wellington last year then lost to Australia in Perth.
The bounce came after that defeat as they smashed the Wallabies 36-0 at, you guessed it, Eden Park a week later and coach Ian Foster will be hoping for a repeat of that performance this week.
Any bounce will come not so much through who plays, but how the All Blacks play.
Rugby remains a simple game. Possession is key and that usually comes through forward dominance and winning the collisions and at the breakdown.
The All Blacks might have drawn the match but they lost in most of the key stats in Wellington, especially possession where the Wallabies had 61 percent of the ball. When they did get it, the
All Blacks kicked it away more often (31 times to Australia’s 23) and turned it over 20 times to Australia’s 12.
So they had less ball, kicked it away more often and gave it up in contact more often - not really a platform to win from.
That they didn’t lose was because of their terrific defence. The All Blacks made 202 tackles - roughly double Australia’s 105 yet they missed only two more tackles than the Wallabies.
Much of the comment and criticism after the Wellington Test has focused on the backs and the inability to win with a drop goal.
The pack has slipped under the rug. They weren’t awful - in fact Sam Cane was tremendous - but for the All Blacks to fire the pack has to get them on the front foot.
It means the likes of Patrick Tuipulotu and Ofa Tu’ungafasi have to get the ball and rumble over the gain line with the others then charging off them. Neither player features in the top five carries for the All Blacks yet their presence with the ball was a huge feature of their play and the Blues success during Super Rugby Aotearoa.
It’s easy to blame Mo’unga but few first fives look good going backwards so the game plan has to get the ball into the hands of the All Blacks big men first. As the saying goes, you have to earn the right to go wide.
The All Blacks also need to calm down a bit. It was harum-scarum stuff in that eight minutes of overtime as both teams missed chances to win the match.
There is enough experience in this All Blacks side for cooler heads to prevail especially with so much on the line at Eden Park.
But the Wallabies have shown they’re not a bad side. They certainly have a very good coach in Dave Rennie, have some exciting new players in their ranks and they will feel unlucky not to have won in Wellington.
They might ever believe the All Blacks are weaker than they’ve been in recent years.
It’s up to the All Blacks to show they’re wrong.
