Upcoming Special Programs & Events JewCurious? Adult Education Class Begins in October The JewCurious class at Temple Beth-El will meet on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 pm beginning Oct. 16. In this class we explore the major narratives, history, practices, theology, and values of Judaism. You can expect that the learning will happen with curiosity and open mindedness, respecting one another’s boundaries and beliefs. This course is open to anyone who is curious and lasts 20 weeks. There is an option to participate over the Internet via Zoom if you do not live locally. Visit the TBE website to sign up for the class.

Religious School Sukkot Dinner Celebration, Oct. 16 Enjoy a barbecue chicken dinner (w/veggie options), music, games and schmoozing under the Sukkah. Cost: $10 for adults/$5 for children under 13. Online registration available soon.

2019 Homelessness Series: Open Sukkah, Oct. 17 5:30–7:30 pm Southside Faith Communities Interfaith Program, Sukkah

Together, the congregations of Southside are making homelessness their theme this year over three events. Join us as we get to know each other better and learn about the work Five Points is doing in response to the increasingly urgent issue of homelessness. This program opens the synagogue's sukkah to the entire community during the festival Sukkot. It focuses on Jewish teachings about hospitality and homelessness, drawing on the model of the Sukkah, a temporary booth set up outdoors that serves as a space for hosting neighbors and encourages us to offer hospitality to those without a home. We will explore the differences between hospitality and friendship that enable better

Erev Simchat Torah Block Party: Oct. 21 Enjoy pizza and community time at 5:45 pm at Temple Beth-El. At 6:30 pm, join a Torah processional down Highland Avenue to Temple Emanu-El for music by the Magic City Shtetl Klezmer Band, the traditional hakafot and dancing. It’s a “Highland Avenue Block Party” not to be missed.

Shul as School Program

Borrow from our Reading & Resource Room’s collection of “Shul as School” books to read during services. Please return when done for others to enjoy and do not remove from the building. After Shabbat and/or Yom Tov, be sure to look at the book list,

complete with links to purchase each book, available on the TBE website.

New Play Space to Open Soon Plans for the play space in the Filler Social Hall are coming together nicely and we hope to have it ready in the upcoming year. Children of all ages will be able to enjoy the space, which features a climbing gym, Jewish reading center, imagination station and more! We aim to create a family-friendly Shabbat environment for learning, fun and socialization.
