CURRICULA-RELATED ISSUES IN TURKEY AND ELT
English is the world language which serves as the lingua franca for a
wide range of fields such as business, technology, education, tourism,
science, and so on. This wide range of contexts English language owns
makes it the global language of international communication. As a result
of the high demand for teaching English in especially non- English-
speaking countries to keep up with the latest developments in various
contexts, these countries had to update their foreign language teaching
policies in accordance with the economic, social, and technological
needs. As stated by Kırkgöz (2008a), the role of English in these
countries is crucial and challenging because English, which is an
inevitable tool for worldwide communication, is not their native
language but, rather it has the status of foreign language (EFL).
Teaching a language in a foreign context such as Turkey has undoubtedly
some potential challenges. These challenges need to be uncovered to
find effective solutions and compensate for the difficulties learners may
encounter. The difficulties in teaching and learning a foreign language in
the expanding circle countries such as Turkey, China, Denmark,
Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Sweden, etc. in which English has no
special administrative status but is recognized as a lingua franca and is
widely studied as a foreign language have been on the agenda of several
researchers.
