Message from the Principal

Prior to March Break I visited with each class and shared with students that Mr. Mallory‟s step-daughter, Vicki, passed away tragically at McMaster Hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Mallory and his family as they grieve the loss of Vicki. We have made a donation on behalf of the Dalewood staff and students to the Boys and Girls Club of Niagara Falls as requested by the family. Mr. Mallory is being covered by Mr. Bradnam for the interim. For the time being, Orchestra practices will continue on Mondays after school with Mr. Bradnam. Please note for the remainder of the spring we will not be having Choir on Thursday mornings. Given these circumstances we are going to be forgoing the Spring Concert and instead scheduling a different type of performance to showcase student talents later in June. As a staff, we have been discussing a variety of possibilities. Once we finalize plans we will communicate to you the details in advance so that your family is aware. I would like to thank all of our families for your continued support as we move forward this spring.

Sincerely, T. Wallace

APRIL IS ORALHEALTH MONTH

Although preventable, cavities are the most common chronic disease of children aged six to 19 years. Cavities can lead to

difficulties sleeping, pain, discomfort, and infection which for kids can lead to decreased school attendance. In Niagara, fluoride is not added into our water supply. Therefore, it is recommended that all residents brush their teeth twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste to prevent cavities.

Children three to six years of age should be assisted with brushing their teeth by an adult using a pea-sized portion of fluoridated toothpaste until they can tie their own shoe laces.

Regular flossing is the single most important thing you can do to prevent gum disease. Most children need help flossing until they are about eight to 10 years old.

Niagara Region Public Health has two programs to assist children and youth with no insurance in getting the dental health care they need. For more information please call the Public Health Dental Program at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074, ext. 7399.

ME TO WE – RAFIKI CHAINS Dana Stevens Hey Dalewood! As you all probably know Me to We's latest project has been our Rafiki Chains supporting the drought in Africa. We had a lot of sales which was fantastic! On the announcements we had said about Africa suffering from the worst drought that they have had in over 60 years; this is true and I am going to tell you how we are supporting them through that drought. By having you buy a necklace for $10.00 and placing your order, your money is sent to the mothers in Africa so they can feed their children. These mothers make the necklaces by hand and then send them back to us. Not only are you and your mother benefiting from this movement but mother's and children in Africa are benefiting as well. On behalf of the Me to We club I would like

to thank everyone who participated in this fundraiser and let you know that the necklaces will be arriving soon! Concours d'Épellation Grace Van Helvert Wed., March 21st was the grade 5's first spelling bee! I was SOO nervous! Alyssa, Chloe, and I (Grace) were all rooting for each other. Alyssa came in 4th out of 6 people. Then it was down to Chloe and I. Then, “fair and square”, I won! Bravo! We all got a medal and something else. Place 4-6 got a book, place 2 and 3 got money, and I got $50! Bravo tout le monde! CHESS CLUB Mr. Wales Congratulations to the Junior and Intermediate chess teams who are heading to Queen Mary on Fri., March 30th, 2012 to participate in the DSBN Area 4 Chess Tournament. HUNGER GAMES Mrs. Jones The Hunger Games movie event was a great success with 116 students attending the DSBN screening on Fri., March 23rd. It was wonderful to see the book come to life on the big screen! Although there has been tremendous interest in continuing our Hunger Games Book Club, we will be waiting until next year as the next movie, Catching Fire, will be coming out in 2013. Until then, check out the many Hunger Games activities online and keep reading!

Awaiting “Hunger Games” Movie

ECO CLUB NEWS Mrs. Jones Eco Club will be hosting some exciting events for Earth Day on Fri., April 20th.

Clothes Collection

Also for the month of April we will also be participating in the Bags2School program and Think

Recycle program. Through Bags2School, students will be bringing home bags to collect items, including used clothing, shoes (tied together) and soft toys that will be shipped to less fortunate countries. Dalewood will directly receive $200 per tonne of items collected. This is an awesome opportunity to help you with your „Spring Cleaning,‟ raise money for Dalewood, reduce landfill waste, and help those less fortunate! Bags will be coming home with students early in April and the collection date will be early May.

Old Electronics Collection Also if you have any old electronics, including cell phone (working or not), digital cameras (working or not), empty inkjet and toner cartridges, laptops (working or not), tablets (working or not), those will be collected this month as well with the Think Recycle Program. Each item collected will bring more funds to Dalewood while helping to reduce hazardous e-waste. Recycle, Reduce, Reuse! DRAMA NEWS Mrs. Coles

This year we have decided to organize our Track and Field a little differently. In the past we have had a traditional Track and Field Day where our expectations were to involve all

students. This year, with the addition of the Grade 5 students, we have changed the look of our program. Grade 5 students will attend a meet at the Niagara Olympic Club with Prince Philip School. (Date:TBA) Grade 7 and 8 students will have to tryout for our school Track and Field Team this year. Those students that make the team will represent Dalewood at our region meet on Wed., May 9th, 2012 at Niagara Oylmpic Club. Students interested in trying out for this team must attend at least 5 out of 7 tryouts in order to be considered. We will also be taking only the top 2 to 3 athletes in each event to represent Dalewood. If you have any other questions please contact the school and ask to speak with the Physical Education Staff.

ALVIN LAW – MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER note: venue change

Dalewood School Council is delighted to present motivational speaker Alvin Law on Tues., April 17th, 2012 at Govenor Simcoe Secondary School. Alvin has presented to over 2 million people worldwide! Born without arms, Alvin is not only a remarkably successful professional speaker, but proof of one of the most inspiring stories you will ever witness. He takes away every excuse we may make and expands what is possible in life. Funds raised from this special event will improve our school‟s technology. Tickets are available to the public at Dalewood on a first-come, first-served basis for just $10.00. Brochure sponsorship opportunities are also available for $40.00. Please call 905-934-3325 or visit the school office today. NO "SCENTS" MAKES SENSE At Dalewood we certainly understand the complexities of providing a scent free environment at a Senior Elementary School. However, the combined use of spray products by a large number of students at the same time (i.e. in change rooms, locker area, hallways) creates a noxious learning and working environment. Spray products may not be used at school. We suggest the use of unscented stick deodorant and body wipes for Phys. Ed class. We recognize that students, staff, and visitors to Dalewood may react quite significantly to scented products if they have a sensitivity to them or if they have a respiratory condition such as asthma. Scented products; especially SPRAY products such as body mist, cologne, perfume, hairspray, and deodorant trigger reactions ranging from mild discomfort, headaches, nausea, dizziness, rashes, eye and throat irritation, difficulties with concentration, anxiety, and/or respiratory distress. Staff, students, parents, and visitors are asked to refrain from using scented products while at school.

YOU CAN BECOME A FRESH AIR FUND HOST!

It doesn’t take much to be a host family for The Fresh Air

Fund - just a little room in your heart and your home! Since

1877, New York City children growing up in low-income

neighborhoods have been able to experience simple summer

pleasures in rural, suburban and small town communities in

from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air

Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program.

“I get to see stuff that I don’t get see in the city like deer,

dragonflies, frogs and even the stars at night!” says seven-

year-old Jose of Brooklyn.

Last year, close to 4,000 New York City children

experienced the thrill of summertime pleasures like roasting

marshmallows over a campfire and flying kites in backyards

and open fields. Last summer, 120 Fresh Air children visited

volunteer host families in the Niagara region. The Fresh Air

Fund is seeking more host families in the Niagara region

to open their home to a New York City child for one or

two weeks this summer.

Fresh Air host families can choose the gender and

approximate age of their visitor. First-time Fresh Air

children are between the ages of six and twelve. Many

families find their hosting experiences so rewarding that 65

percent of all children are reinvited to stay with the same host families year after year. The Fresh Air Fund is

celebrating its 136th

summer of serving children!

For more information on how you can share the simple joys of summer with a city child, please contact Eileen

Lucas at [email protected] or Laura-Ann Morris at 905-835-2896 or [email protected]. You

can also call 800-367-0003 or visit The Fresh Air Fund online at www.freshair.org.
