he town’s origin dates back to 1884 when a writer from Danbury Connecticut became fascinated with the area’s pristine beauty and agricultural potential. Oliver Martin Crosby was first introduced to Florida when he signed on as editor of “The South” a New York publication that promoted Florida to northerners. He became an original investor and marketed the area abroad. One of his respondents was a dynamic couple from England, Mr. and Mrs. William King. After settling in the area Mrs. King suggested they change the name from Lake Forest to Avon Park. “This beautiful wilderness of stately pines and clear lakes” reminded her of her original home, Stratford-on-Avon.

The community’s quiet demeanor lends itself to a very comfortable lifestyle for its 20,000 residents. While it’s proximity to Highlands County’s many recreational, educational, and cultural venues positions it as a very desirable place to call home.

Growing Out from Its Roots Avon Park is growing into its future. It’s not the same community it once was. With so much development going on, it’s a great time to relocate your home and or business. Growth has pushed Avon Park to expand its city limits. With four new residential developments in construction it’s obvious that more people have discovered the pleasant atmosphere and community lifestyle that is Avon Park. communities that offer residents a friendly and charming place to call home. Lake Byrd Shores is a neighborhood community being built on the northern outskirts.

The downtown district is developing along with the residential. Bagwell Lumber, a retailer of building products & materials, is constructing a new showroom in Avon Park’s downtown. Palmer Hardware store added 5,000 square feet of showroom space and one of the area’s older buildings was recently purchased and currently being renovated into professional office space. A new Super Wal-Mart opened its doors for shoppers of all kinds.

A Community Founded on ServiceThe City of Avon Park operates under a city manager form of government who operates under the direction of an elected five-member council with mayor. Both the Fire Department and Police Department provide community protection and assistance to the residents of Avon Park. The Avon Park Fire Department maintains a fully equipped facility with seven trucks and employs twelve full time fire fighters. The Highlands Lakes Volunteer Fire Department serves residents outside the incorporated area. The Avon Park Police Department includes one chief and twenty-five sworn officers, providing 24 hour protection to its 9,000 citizens. The city also provides water and sewer services to its citizens, while electricity is supplied by the Progress Energy, Inc.

A Convenient LocationYou can find Avon Park along US 27 in central Florida’s Highlands County; just a few hours drive from either coastline. By private jet or plane you

can fly easily into Avon Park’s Executive Airport with runway capabilities for private jets and planes to take off and land within federal safety parameters. The Avon Park Jet Center acts as the field’s Fixed Base Operator, while offering, plane inspection and maintenance services, as well as ground based and flight instruction.

WorshipThe Avon Park community supports over forty churches. Most denominations of faith are represented, providing their special spiritual and moral guidance to their congregation. The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer and the Union Congregational Church are two of the oldest churches in Avon Park.

Senior Activities CenterThe Avon Park Senior Activities Center, Inc. is an organization for local and winter residents and is organized to provide its members with opportunities to enjoy recreational facilities and good fellowship. The facilities are owned by the City of Avon Park and leased to the Club for a nominal amount. The City and the Senior Activities Center share operation and maintenance responsibilities.

Current activities include Shuffleboard Groups, Bingo, Cards (including Euchre, Pinochle, Cribbage, Bridge, Hand and Foot). Crafts, Painting Class, Saturday Night Supper Club and entertainment. Special programs are Holiday Dinners, Anniversaries and Memorial Observances and other programs of interest at various times.

Shuffleboard is the main interest of most members. Group Shuffleboard activities are regularly scheduled. A Club Tournament is held each Monday, and tournaments, held by the Florida State Association and Central District Association, is scheduled throughout the Winter Shuffleboard Season. During the Summer tournaments are held each week in Avon Park and Central District cities.

All activities are available to winter guests; however, permanent residents of Highlands County are heartily encouraged to take advantage of any or all events, fun and fellowship. Drop in to experience our hospitality!

SENIOR ACTIVITIES & HEALTHCAREHealthcareAvon Park’s accessibility to healthcare services includes two major hospitals in addition to many excellent physicians and professionals. Florida Hospital Heartland Medical Center, located just south of Avon Park, houses the area’s largest hospital-based laboratory and radiology services plus comprehensive diagnostic and treatment facilities. Family life has always set the rhythm of life in Avon Park. Thus education holds a prime importance in this community. Area schools report an enrollment of 4,500 students among its five public schools; three elementary, one Middle School, and one High School. Walker Memorial Jr. Academy and Community Christian Academy both offer a fine private education.

Located immediately south of Avon Park in a park-like setting on 228 acres, South Florida Community College is one of Florida’s most comprehensive community colleges. The College offers Associate in Arts degrees, Associate in Applied Science degrees, college and occupational certificates, high school diplomas, corporate and workforce training and community education. The SFCC University Center, located on the Highlands Campus, offers bachelor’s and master’s programs and a doctoral program in partnership with four-year colleges and universities.

South Florida Community College boasts a 1500-seat Theatre for the Performing Arts and the intimate SFCC University Center Auditorium. The acclaimed Artists Series includes musicals and concerts by renowned artists. Other performances presented at SFCC include the Matinee Series, the Chamber Series, the Jazz Series, the Kaleidoscope Series, the Summer Series, the new India Fine Arts Series and community concerts and shows.

SFCC’s Museum of Florida Art and Culture (MOFAC) displays one of the finest collections of contemporary Florida regional art as well as archaeological artifacts. It hosts special exhibits from October through May.

Avon Park’s original industry was and continues to be agricultural, in citrus and cattle. Highlands County is among the top five counties in citrus and beef production, in ‘97 Highlands County was ranked first in number of beef cows at 120,000 heads. The citrus industry provides between 2,000 to 3,000 full time jobs with thousands more employed at peak harvest time.

The Avon Park Correctional Institute located on the Avon Park Air Force Range offers employment opportunities for the community in addition to the new Avon Park Youth Academy.

Avon Park’s Executive Airport is home to several companies servicing the aviation industry. Currently plans are underway for an expansion to accommodate the growth in this area. Considering its central Florida location, Avon Park offers a convenient site for a home base to aviation related businesses.

The Highlands County Family YMCA BMX track is a new addition to the outdoor entertainment venue at Avon Park. Sport enthusiasts from around the state travel to Avon Park on the weekends to view the colorful display of competitors of all ages race over the sandy hills. The complex is open every Thursday 4-6 pm with races every Saturday evening.

recreAtioNAvon Park Mower-PlexCurrently Avon Park boasts the country’s only facility designed strictly for lawn mower racing. What began as a festival event has now become a bona fide sport. Seasonal lawn mower races take place at this facility located on Hwy 64 just west of the Avon Park Airport. As an official member of the Lawnmower Racing Association Avon Park’s Mower-Plex has been a host site for the National Lawn Mower Racing Association.

Highlands Hammock State Park Located just a short drive south of Avon Park is the beautiful Highlands Hammock State Park, one of Florida’s original five. First opened to the public in 1931 this 8140-acre park still preserves a scenic, virgin hardwood forest. The Park facilities include a horseback riding trail, a paved loop drive, and picnic and camping areas.

Avon Park Air Force RangeUnique to the area is the Avon Park Air Force range, 106,000 acres of mixed forest and rangeland with 82,000 acres open to public access for hiking, hunting, fishing, camping and other activities. The area is managed as a cooperative effort with the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission who provides law enforcement and technical assistance with wildlife problems, while the Correctional Institution provides the manpower support on special projects, and the Air Force administers all the recreational activities.

This natural reserve has thirty-two miles of hiking/nature trails available for public use as military activities permit. Hunting is a popular sport here. Over 3,000 people vie for the 2,000 available permits, which are selected by a random drawing. The hunting season runs from the end of September through April with a Turkey Season in March and April.

Hotel Jacaranda Built in the 1920’s, Avon Park’s “gracious lady” played hostess to the likes of Babe Ruth and Clark Gable. Today, the hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, radiating unequalled elegance and boasting comfortable and spacious rooms. A sprawling veranda overlooks tree-lined Main Street and serves as a favorite gathering place for avid card players. After a day of sightseeing, guests can relax in the hotel’s swimming pool or hot tub. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner during the season, with its famous Grand Buffet served on Sundays.

The Depot MuseumLearn about Avon Park’s pioneer spirit at the Depot Museum operated by the Historical Society. Officially dedicated on May 30th, 1981 it includes more than 2,000 items from the earliest days of Avon Park. It is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 am to 2 pm and closed during the summer months.
