AVisit with a ‘Living Legend’JOYCE AND GARRY BROWNLEE of Canoe Point Roadenjoyed a visit last weekend from their old friendWesWerbowy, from the Thunder Bay area. That’s nice, youmight say, but how and why is a visit to St. Joe by oneman considered ‘newsworthy’ to readers of the IslandClippings?

There are a couple of reasons! First is his life story.Weshas chosen to lead a very different, but extremely inter-esting life! Born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie,Wes metGarry years ago, when they both worked at Algoma Steel. The two have shared a firm friendship ever since.

But Wes was always cut from a different bolt of cloththan the rest of us. He craved the wild outdoors, and thesimple, clean and pure life you can only find by livingaway from the comforts of civilization. Although heappears onthe outside tobe just likeanyone else,on the inside,Wes keepsscore of hislife by a vastlydifferent scale.Although hecould be ascontent as therest of us in acomfortablehome with acar or truck inthe driveway,he’s much happier in a rustic, remote setting, where you haveto hone your wits and skills to a sharp edge, just to survive.

Wes left his native Sault Ste. Marie in quest of a more adven-turous life, and found it! He moved north to the bush

countryoutsideThunder Bay,Ontario, buteven thatsetting isonly ‘basecamp.’ Hisoutdoor life,accomplish-ments andadventureswould beworthy of aJohnWaynemovie script.Althoughphysically of‘average’height,Wes isdefinitely‘larger thanlife’. Over theyears,Weshas earned awidespreadreputation as

a “man’s man”. Now aged 67, he’s an accomplishedbush pilot, martial artist, gunsmith, diver, hunter,

trapper, angler and wilderness guide, taking parties of hardyadventurers into the high tundra of Canada’s far north.

These are no comfortable ‘weekend outings’ – they are thereal deal: weeks of living off the land under often grueling

conditions. Many can’t take it, but Wes thrives on it! Heusually returns with one party, then heads right back out withanother, and another right after that!

In the high, wild country of the true north,Wes could bedescribed as a living legend.

Which brings us to the big reason why we think last weekend’svisit by Wes is so newsworthy: the fact that he’s even aliveright now! The ‘legend’ of WesWerbowy has just had anotherexciting, spine-chilling chapter written. It’s a chapter that hasbeen re-told by almost every newspaper in the north, as well ascovered by major television networks both in Canada and theUSA, although strangely, not by the media in his own hometown.

It started out simply enough …Wes had taken a party of meninto the Nunavut wilderness about 30 miles inland fromWhale Cove, a small Inuit town on the western shore ofHudson’s Bay. Although they enjoy some modern technolog-ical innovations like snowmobiles, guns and houses, thecommunity is still traditionally Inuit in many ways. Herepeople still wear clothes made with furs, use sled dogs to pulltheir kamutiks (sleds) and live on a diet of raw meat and fish.True “Wes” country for sure!

Wes was leading an eco-tourism expedition to photograph thebeautiful northern flowers that grow so abundantly on thetundra at this time of year. They had retired to their tents andsleeping bags for the night, and all were sleeping soundlywhen, at 3 am,Wes’ hunting and survival instincts jerked himawake - to an outdoorsman’s worst nightmare.

He opened his eyes to see a huge male polar bear - the fiercestand most feared of all northern predators – a mere two feetfrom his face! Wes was almost helpless, zipped into his warmsleeping bag. His horror intensified when he saw that thehungry bear was standing on his rifle! Not that it matteredmuch, since he’d have no time to get off a single shot, even ifhe could reach his weapon. And it would take more than oneshot to down this monster!

“This is the ultimate predator of the north”Wes tells us. “It’sdifficult to describe the effect on my mind from having it soclose to my face! I was unarmed, facing a half-ton killingmachine that can decapitate a human with a single swipe of itspaw, or bite through a leg bone as if it were a biscuit!”

Wes decided in one split second that, if he was going to die, hewould go down fighting! In that instant, he recalled the adviceof an Inuit Elder who once told him that a polar bear will tryto protect its nose because it’s very sensitive, and that’s whereyou should hit if you get the chance.Wes knew that he had butone choice – to attack; and only one chance at it. If he failed, death was mere seconds away.

All he could think of as he steeled himself for his attack washow ungodly huge the bear was, filling the entire entrance of

his tent, its nose pushing the screen inward as the tentbuckled. Summoning every ounce of his courage, hescreamed “Get Out!” at the top of his lungs as he drove hisfist, with everything he had behind it, into the bear’s hugeblack nose.

The punch landed with a loud smacking sound, as if he hadhit a slab of wet meat. The startled bear jumped back andquickly retreated, churning up clumps of tundra with everyleap as he disappeared into the night fog.

Thinking the bear would quickly recover his composure andreturn,Wes alerted the camp, which proved to be unneces-sary, since his fellow campers had heard his yell and the bearrunning away. When they later went out to check the bear’stracks, they noted that the front pad measured more than 8inches across. That bear, if standing, would be over 13 feettall!

The news of Wes’ close brush with death spread across thenorth like wildfire, adding even further fuel to his legend. Helater told news reporters “I don’t need to win any moneylottery, because I won the LIFE lottery that night! I’m onelucky man to be able to tell the story.”

But when he spoke with us last weekend, his sense of humourcame into play. “My wife tells me that a polar bear should beno big deal. After all, I sleep beside an unpredictable, fieryredhead every night at home.” he laughed. “After all those

years with her, I’ve learned to sleep with one eye open!”

Thank youWes, for giving us a glimpse into the amazing lifeyou’ve lived, and for letting us share your incredible storywith our readers! We’d love to have you come back to visitany time … but leave the bears behind!

Rounding Up Those Bad Guys!By Shirley Abel

ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 21ST, in the spirit of fun, Sherriff Jay (alias Don’t Messwith Me) Ambeault & Deputy Joe (alias Sharp as a Tack) Wiederkehr rounded up andarrested some of our most notorious citizens. After a brief trial with Judge Shirley(alias Hang’em High) Abel, all were found guilty and thrown into our HistoricRichards Landing Jail by our Jail Guard, Jacques (alias NoWay Out) Cloutier.

With arrest monies and purchased Pardons, our Bailiffs Elsie Mole and JeanWiederkehr collected almost $500 for the St. Joseph Island Township HeritageCommittee, to help us in our efforts to recognize and preserve Historical Landmarksin our Township.

Many thanks to our shady criminals, the many public buildings and businesses whoposted our Wanted Posters, the Island Clippings for including our Announcement forseveral weeks and of course, Cheryl who encouraged our participants with her signoutside of Ambeault’s.Without the help ofour volunteers, JeanWiederkehr, Chris &Logan Deller and of course our magnifi-cent, Sherriff Jay Ambeault, there is no wayour Committee could have seen suchsuccess in our first Lock Up event. Thanksto all!

p.s. A few of you slipped through our fingers this year (Air Guitar Exhibitionist, GoaliePre-Tender, Conscientious Neighbours etc. … you know who you are!) but we will bewatching you for next year!

Police Officers dragged into GunRegistry Debate

AS IF THERE WEREN’T ENOUGH CONTROVERSY over thelong-disputed and widely unpopular Long Gun Registry! Itnow appears that police officers – those whose safety is one ofthe main reasons for the Registry in the first place – arestrongly divided as to its actual usefulness.

Edmonton police officer Randy Kuntz claims that his recentnational survey of Canadian police officers revealed that 92%of police officers in Canada want Parliament to vote in favourof scrapping the long-gun registry. 2,631 officers responded toa survey in a police magazine, asking officers whether theysupported the registry as a useful working tool. 2,410 officersresponded that the registry is a useless crime fighting tool thatdid not assist them in the performance of their duties.

Manitoba MP Candice Hoeppner, sponsor of Bill C-391 toabolish the Gun Registry, quickly jumped on the survey find-ings. “This survey proves what I have been saying all along -that the CACP and the CPA do not, as they claim, speak forCanadian police officers on this issue,” she said. “As I have metwith police chiefs and front-line officers this past year, I haverepeatedly said that police support for maintaining the long-gun registry is far from unanimous; in fact, it seems that theopposite is true - police support to end the registry is over-whelming!”

Ms. Hoeppner commented that both the CACP’s and CPA’sdefense of the long-gun registry is based on the notion thatpolice officers use it and want it, while Kuntz’s survey presum-ably shows that simply isn’t true.

“Front-line officers - the constables and sergeants in the field -are throwing their support behind Bill C-391, while individ-

uals like Mr. Momy and Chief Blair continue to defend auseless and unreliable gun database,” she continued. “It begsthe question: ‘Exactly who are they speaking for?’”

“This survey just shows again that it’s high time to put anend to the long-gun registry - it has not made Canadianssafer, it is not a reliable tool for police, and it does not makesense to continue to pay for it,” Ms. Hoeppner concluded.

The ‘Third Reading’ and vote on Bill C-391 will take place inthe House of Commons on September 22nd. In the mean-time, the existing suspension for registering long guns hasbeen extended for another 12 months.

For owners of firearms, all gun safety laws are still in effect. You must still have a valid Firearm Possession-Only Licence(POL) or Firearm Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL)as long as you own and possess any firearms, and carry it onyou when taking your firearms into the field or to a shootingrange.

Remember to check the expiry date on your licence! Don’t letit expire or you will find yourself suddenly in “illegal” posses-sion of a firearm, regardless of the Gun Registry’s status.

PC Doctorby George Skardis

QUESTION: This silly laptop computer is driving me crazy. It seems that just when I’m almost finished typing a longemail, something happens, and my whole email disappears.Does this laptop computer have a mind of its own? What isgoing on?

ANSWER: The touchpad is your culprit. The touchpad onyour laptop computer is extremely sensitive and alert to theslightest brush from your hand during typing. Nearing theend of a long paragraph, your hands relax slightly. The base ofyour thumb accidentally drags or taps the touchpad. Yourlaptop computer interprets these inadvertent actions as delib-erate commands. Your email is cancelled. Cue sound ofweeping.

If a mouse is not used with this laptop computer, go toControl Panel, Mouse/Touchpad Properties. Find an optionwhich disables touchpad while typing. Unfortunately laptopcomputer manufacturer do not follow specific standards. Thehunt through Mouse/Touchpad properties for that elusivecheckbox disabling touchpad while typing might be unsuc-cessful.

On the other hand, if a mouse is normally used with thislaptop computer, disabling the touchpad completely is abetter solution. Disabling the touchpad deactivates the padand the associated left and right pad buttons. This assigns allpointing and clicking duties to your mouse and only themouse. Go to Control Panel, Mouse/Touchpad Properties.Find an option which disables the touchpad only when amouse is attached; or, find the simple straight-forward disabletouchpad option. Remember to click inside the checkbox, apply, and OK.

The laptop keyboard might have dedicated keys or buttonsfor disabling the touchpad. Once again laptop manufacturersdo not follow standards with regards to placement of saidkeys. One manufacturer has incorporated a wee button in thethin border framing the touchpad. Pressing this buttondisables the touchpad. The button glows to signify that yourtouchpad is disabled. Neat!

Other manufacturers provide an enable/disable function key.Look carefully at the lower left-hand corner of your laptop’skeyboard. Find the key labeled ‘Fn’ and normally colouredblue. The top row of your laptop keyboard has all the specialfunction keys, F1 through F12. Check out the graphicsymbols on each function key. Notice that the graphicsymbols are in matching ‘Fn’ colour. Locate the function keydecorated with what looks like the outline of a touchpad. There might be a rounded mouse shape or a hovering fingeradjacent to this touchpad outline. This key is the touchpadenable/disable function key. With your left hand, press andhold the ‘Fn’ key down. With your right hand tap thetouchpad enable/disable key. Release the ‘Fn’ key. Test thetouchpad. It’s disabled. Test the mouse. It’s still working.Awesome!
