New in Version 2.0

The following sections describe the changes and new features in Avid Unity ISIS v2.0.

New Hardware Provides Bandwidth Improvements

The Avid Unity ISIS engine houses newly engineered ISX and ISS switches that provide greater bandwidth in the ISIS switching network. This release also introduces a new 64-bit System Director that can be used with new and old generation switches in the engines. In addition, the ISIS engines now support 2 terabyte (TB) ISBs.

System Director

The Avid Unity ISIS System Director uses an Intel® SR2500 server with 9 GB of memory and a 64-bit Window operating system. The new 64-bit System Director provides the following support:

• 64-bit System Director – 10 million files32-bit System Director – 2.5 million files

• 64-bit System Director – 500,000 folders (25,000 files per folder)32-bit System Director – 10,000 folders

• 5638 users

• 1000 groups — a user can be in 30 groups

Page 9: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

9

Storage Blades

Avid Unity ISIS has qualified 1 terabyte (TB) drives. The ISBs with the two 1 TB drives are referred to as i2000s. The i2000 ISBs require 512 KB chunk size, see “New Storage Group Size” on page 10.

Layer 1 Switches

The new generation ISX and ISS switches install in the same engines as earlier releases, the chassis has not changed. Although, all the switches in the engines need to be of the same generation. The two new switches are silk-screened with ISX2000 and ISS2000. The new switches cannot be mixed in ISIS engines with earlier versions of the switches (labeled ISX1000 and ISS1000). If your ISX and ISS switches are not labeled, consider them the earlier versions. The ISS2000 switches are required for 10-Gb clients and 512 KB chunk size, see “New Storage Group Size” on page 10.

The Avid Unity ISIS documentation refers to ISX2000 and ISS2000 switches as v2.x hardware and ISX1000 and ISS1000 switches as v1.x hardware.

10-Gb Client Support with TCP/IP Offload (TOE) Technology

The Chelsio™ 10-Gb Ethernet PCI-e adapter boards are supported in the HP xw8400 and HPxw8600 editing systems and connect to the Avid Unity ISIS system using a fiber optic cable. The Chelsio 10 Gb Ethernet adapter boards are equipped with a fully TCP/IP compliant chip that bypasses the network interface software processing. This TOE technology increases the server performance while reducing the CPU utilization.

These 10-Gb Ethernet connections are intended for ultra high-resolution clients (UHRC) supporting two streams of 1:1 uncompressed HD.

10 Gb Network Connections

Clients with the Chelsio 10-Gb adapter board can connect directly into the ISS2000 10-Gb port on the Avid Unity ISIS Engine. Two 10-Gb clients can connect into one engine; one client to each ISS2000. Engines with v1.x ISS1000 hardware do not support 10-Gb clients.

c The Chelsio 10-Gb adapter board is shipped with an SFP+ optical transceiver. The Chelsio 10-Gb adapter board and SFP+ transceiver are tested and qualified to work as a single component. Do not remove or swap the SFP+ optical transceivers. The Chelsio adapter board and SFP+ transceivers are replaced as a single component.

If your client cannot connect directly to an Avid Unity ISIS Engine, Avid has qualified the several switches that provide 10-Gb connections for more remote locations, see “Layer 2 and Layer 3 Switches” on page 19.

New in Version 2.0

10

n Access the Knowledge Base at www.avid.com/onlinesupport to download the Avid Unity ISIS Switch Reference Guide and sample configuration files. This document provides configuration information on the Ethernet switches that are qualified with the Avid Unity ISIS shared storage network.

Ultra High Resolution Client

Instructions for installing the Chelsio 10-Gb adapter board, Chelsio driver, and Avid Unity ISIS client software are provided in the Avid Unity ISIS Client Guide. The Chelsio adapter board has been qualified in the following configurations:

• Slot 4 in the HP xw8400 (supported on dual quad-core processor systems only)

• Slot 6 in the HP xw8600

Once your Avid Unity ISIS 10-Gb client hardware and software is installed, the following requirements are needed with the Ultra High Resolution client:

• You need to use the new Ultra High Resolution setting in the Client Manager Preferences

• Your workspace must be set to a 512 KB chunk size

• Your Avid Unity ISIS infrastructure must be using v2.x switches (ISS2000 and IXS2000)

New Storage Group Size

Storage elements are combined to create storage groups in the ISIS file system. These Storage Groups can be configured to either operate using 512 KB (default) or 256 KB chunk sizes. Earlier Avid Unity ISIS releases used 256 KB chunk sizes. For more information about setting the chunk size, see the Avid Unity ISIS Administration Guide.

n Avid Unity ISIS switch hardware shipped with v1.x (ISS1000 and IXS1000) does not support 512 KB chunk sizes. If you have Avid Unity ISIS v2.x software running on v1.x switches, you must select the 256KB chunk size when adding storage elements to the file system to create Storage Groups.

You cannot change the chunk size of a Storage Group once the Storage Group has been created. To change the chunk size of an existing Storage Group, you must delete the Storage Group and create a new Storage Group with the desired chunk size. The chunk size selection is only available when adding the storage elements.

c When you delete Storage Groups all data on that Storage Group is lost.

Page 11: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

11

Moving Workspaces Between Storage Groups

You can move workspaces between Storage Groups that use the same chunk sizes. You can also move a workspace with a 256 KB chunk size, into a Storage Group with a 512 KB chunk size. Moving from a 512 KB chunk size workspace to a 256 KB chunk size Storage Group is not supported.

n Clients should not access workspaces that are in the process of being moved when it is a 256 KB chunk size workspace being moved into a Storage Group with a 512 KB chunk size. Avid recommends that clients unmount these workspaces until the move is complete to avoid an unintentional access. Once the move begins, it cannot be cancelled.

Adding an ISB to the File System

If you add an ISB (displays as an available storage element) to your file system, make sure you match the chunk size of the new storage element to the chunk size of the existing storage group. New storage elements are added with a default chunk size of 512 KB. You cannot mix chunk sizes within a Storage Group. To change the chunk size of an ISB, you must remove the new storage element from the file system and add the storage element again choosing the correct chunk size.

Chunk Size Support With ISB

All ISBs (i500, i1000, and i2000) support the 512 KB chunk size. Although you must have the new v2.x switch hardware (ISS2000 and IXS2000) to use the 512 KB chunk size.

Avid Unity ISIS Administration Tool RenamedAvid Unity ISIS Administration Tool has been redesigned so that the most frequently used functions are one click away. Most of the tools still function the way they have in previous releases, but access to them has become faster and easier. The new Administration Tool design has been renamed to the ISIS Management Console.

User Access to the ISIS Management ConsoleYour Avid Unity ISIS clients can now access the ISIS Management Console without being the ISIS Administrator. When the Avid Unity ISIS Windows or Macintosh client types the address of the ISIS Management Console in their browser, the client can log in using their client name and password.

When you login to the ISIS Management Console as a non-Administrator user, you have the following possibilities:

• If the user account has privileges to resize or modify the protection of the Workspaces, the ISIS Management Console displays three submenus: Workspaces, System Diagnostics, and Installers.

• If the user account does not have the privilege to resize or modify the protection of the Workspaces, the ISIS Management Console displays two submenus: System Diagnostics and Installers.

New in Version 2.0

12

Avid LDAP/Unity Account Synchronizer

LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is an Internet protocol that some applications use to look up information — such as account information, user names and groups — from a server. The Avid LDAP/Unity Account Synchronizer allows Avid Unity ISIS administrators to synchronize ISIS user accounts with existing LDAP user accounts using Active Directory. This feature allows you to create and modify a large number of users and groups within the Avid Unity ISIS system. The Account Synchronizer provides you with the following functionality:

• Configure connections to multiple LDAP servers within the same domain

• Display user accounts available in the LDAP server

• Add new groups and users to the ISIS system

• Grant user memberships to groups

• Remove user membership from a group in ISIS if user no longer belongs to that group on the LDAP server

• Users synchronized by the LDAP Synchronization tool are automatically added as “Remote” users for authentication to the LDAP server

You can use the Avid LDAP/Unity Account Synchronizer to search for groups and their users on an LDAP server, synchronize (reconcile) users and groups by adding or removing users and groups from the ISIS system, generate a report of the account actions, and view a history of the synchronization activity. You must first configure a connection by entering the LDAP server’s fully qualified name, port, and user distinguished name and password for authentication. For more information, see the Avid Unity ISIS Administration Guide.

Full Redistribution

Significant improvements have been made in this release when performing a full redistribution. After updating the Avid Unity ISIS server software, and the ISIS software on all the clients, you must perform a full redistribution regardless if there have not been any configuration changes since the last full redistribution. The full redistribution process that might have taken several hours in earlier releases can be performed in a matter of minutes, depending on the system load.

c Once you do a full redistribution with v2.x, v1.x clients cannot read from, or write to those workspaces. For more details, see “Full Upgrade Instructions For v2.0” on page 14.

Page 13: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

13

The faster full redistributions on workspaces only apply to workspaces that have not changed the total amount of storage in a workspace. For example, if you had a workspace with six Storage Elements (12 TB) and either removed or added two Storage Elements (4 TB), your full redistribution is significantly longer than if the workspace size did not change.

A full redistribution is still recommended at 10 configuration changes. At 32 configuration changes the Avid unity ISIS software automatically performs a full redistribution.

Failover

Previously, if a 10-Gb trunk link failed, the software did not load balance the traffic among the remaining trunk links. This behavior has changed in Avid Unity ISIS v2.0. Now if a 10-Gb trunk link fails, the software automatically load balances the traffic among the remaining trunk links.

For example in a four-way 10-Gb trunk if a single 10-Gb link fails, the traffic is load balanced among the remaining three links. This also means that the average traffic distribution increases from 25% with the four links, to 33% in the three links. The traffic automatically re-balances the load when a trunk link returns.

c It is strongly advised that network planners setup the trunks to handle the additional load if a link or a set of links should fail in a trunk configuration.

Warning messages are sent to ISIS Management Console notifying you that a 10-Gb aggregation link status has changed. The Switch Diagnostics also provides errors when you have a failed link in a trunk.

n This failover feature functionality can be disabled in switch agent page.

Macintosh G5 Settings Utility

Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 and later requires you to run an Avid Unity ISIS Ethernet Tuning utility on all Macintosh G5 client systems. In earlier releases this utility improved performance, in this release it is a requirement. This utility modifies the Ethernet driver settings which are required for Macintosh G5 client systems in an Avid Unity ISIS environment. For instructions, see “Adjusting Ethernet Interface Settings on Macintosh G5 Clients” on page 25.

Fixed In This Release

The following previously reported issues have been fixed in Avid Unity ISIS v2.0.

➤ Previously if you were attempting to capture DNxHD under the following conditions, the capture could have failed. These conditions no longer cause a failure.

• A full redistribution or remove redistribution is in progress.

• You are capturing to a Storage Group of 16 storage elements or less.

• The Avid editor capturing the DNxHD is running Media Composer v3.0, or NewsCutter v7.0, or Symphony v3.0 with a Nitris DX.

➤ Previously the Client Manager did not display more than nine Remote Hosts in the Preferences dialog box of the Client Manager. You were permitted to add more than nine, but you could not scroll or access more than nine. The Remote Hosts Preferences dialog box now allows you to access 14 Remote Hosts. For information in adding Remote Hosts, see the Avid Unity ISIS Client Guide.

Full Upgrade Instructions For v2.0

To upgrade to this release, install Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 on the System Director and Upgrade Storage Blades and Switch Blades in the Avid Unity engines to the v2.0 firmware. The Avid Unity ISIS clients can be v1.4, v1.5, or v2.0 only if you do not do a full redistribution on the workspace after you have updated the infrastructure to v2.0. It is desirable to get the clients to the v2.0 release within a reasonable time frame.

After the Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 software is installed on your infrastructure, perform a full redistribution on all existing workspaces at your earliest convenience and after all your clients have been updated to v2.0. A full redistribution is needed to take advantage of the performance improvements. The redistribution is required even if the system has zero (0) configuration changes listed.

Page 15: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

15

c Once you have done a full redistribution on all your workspaces with v2.x software, any v1.x clients that have not updated the Avid Unity ISIS to v2.x software will not be able to read from or write to those workspaces.

n When installing the software on a Windows 2000 client, make sure you first run Windows Update and accept all “High-priority Updates” and install Windows msi 3.1. If Windows msi 3.1 is not installed, you might receive an error message informing you that a required DLL is missing while installing the client software.

The following process summarizes the upgrade process from v1.x to v2.0:

1. Start the System Director and Log into Administrator account.

2. Start Internet Explorer 7 and change the following settings.

a. Click Tools > Internet Options and change the Security following:

- Internet - Medium

- Trusted - Low

b. Click the Advanced tab and change the following:

- Phishing Filter - Disabled

- Use SSL 2.0 - Enabled (checked)

- Use TLS 1.0 - Disabled (unchecked)

3. Upgrade System Director software, load the ISIS Blade Installers, and load the ISIS Client Installers on the System Director. For more information, see the Avid Unity ISIS Setup Guide.

4. Upgrade all your ISBs and ISSs. Using the Administration tool, select all the ISBs and click Upgrade Storage Blades and then select all your ISSs and click Upgrade Switch Blades. You do not need to wait for the ISBs to be finished, you can upgrade ISBs and ISSs at the same time.

5. Watch the upgrade progress in your Monitoring tool and wait until every ISS is at the “Install Waiting” state and then power down all the Avid ISIS engines.

n If you already have Avid Unity ISIS v2.x installed in your environment you do not need to power cycle the Avid ISIS engines. Power cycling the engines is only required when updating from v1.x to v2.x.

6. Power on the Avid ISIS engines in 1 minute intervals starting with the chassis that has the IXSs. This reduces stress on the stack.

After the Avid ISIS engines restart, the ISSs continue with the install (no additional user intervention is necessary).

Page 16: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

Full Upgrade Instructions For v2.0

16

7. Update your Avid Unity ISIS clients to the v2.0 software.

n Do not continue to the next step until all your clients are updated.

8. After the Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 software is installed, a full redistribution must be performed on all existing workspaces. The redistribution is required even if the system has 0 configuration changes listed.

c Once you have done a full redistribution on all your workspaces with v2.x software, any v1.x clients that have not updated the Avid Unity ISISI client to v2.x software will not be able to mount workspaces.

Upgrading Unstacked Switches

If you need to upgrade switches that are not yet stacked, the Avid Unity ISIS v 1.3 and later installer DVD includes the Avid Unity ISIS Upgrade Utility. This stand-alone application allows field engineers to start and monitor the installation of switch and ISB upgrades from a laptop connected to Avid Unity ISIS switch through the management port. This utility does not replace the current upgrade process. Its primary function is for upgrading a switch or a pair of switches that is incompatible with an existing stacked network. Insertion of these switches into the network before the upgrade could disrupt or compromise the network’s operation. For instruction on using the utility, see the Avid Unity ISIS Setup Guide.

n Avid manufacturing continues to stock ISS1000 and IXS1000 switches with Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 firmware to support existing customers. If you are upgrading your software to, Avid Unity ISIS v2.x, you need to upgrade your ISS1000 and IXS1000 switch firmware.

Special Notes

This section contains important information about the Avid Unity ISIS environment.

User Permissions

A user account with Administrator privileges is required to install Avid Unity ISIS client software on Windows and Macintosh workstations.

Client Preferences

Client Preferences are automatically saved on upgrades or reinstalls from Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 and later. They can be saved manually when you are upgrading from Avid Unity ISIS v1.3. The Avid Unity ISIS installer DVD provides an application (SaveISISPreferences.exe) that can be used to manually save your ISIS client preferences when you are upgrading from Avid Unity ISIS v1.3. This application is located in the: DVD drive:\AvidUnityISISClient folder. For information about manually saving preferences, see the Avid Unity ISIS Client Guide.

The following is a summary of when it is necessary to manually save your preferences:

• Upgrading from v1.2 (32-bit or 64-bit) - save manually using 32-bit version of provided application. Restoration automatic on install of v1.4.

• Upgrading from v1.3 (32-bit) - saving and restoration is automatic.

• Upgrading from v1.3 (64-bit) - same as for upgrading from v1.2.

• Reinstallation of v1.4 (32-bit or 64-bit) - saving and restoration is automatic.

Workspace Names

You must use Unicode characters in workspace names. The following is a list of 16 illegal characters you should not use in workspace names, workgroup names, filenames, user names, device names, and storage group names: \ / = @ [ ] * ? + | : " ; , < >. You also should not use a period (.) as either the first or last character in the names you create, and you should not include a space in workspace names when in an Avid Interplay environment.

n The System Director does not support viewing regional language characters in the Management Console.

Page 22: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

Special Notes

22

Workspace names beginning or ending with a period are no longer valid in Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 and later. If you already have workspace names with periods and upgrade to Avid Unity ISIS v1.4, the original issues continue to exist as outlined below:

• Windows — Data is preserved and intact with display issues. A filename or directory with a period at the end is invalid in Windows. As a result the Avid Unity ISIS Client is trying to interpret a period at the end of a workspace into something Windows can understand. This interpretation appears as a graphic instead of a period.

• Macintosh — Data is preserved and intact, but any workspace with a name that starts with a period is treated as a hidden directory by Mac OS X. By default such a workspace cannot be accessed via the Desktop and cannot be seen in the “/Volumes” folder in the Finder.

To access the contents of the Macintosh workspace:

t Click Go > Go to Folder… menu in the Finder and type the path “/Volumes/” followed by the workspace name (for example, “/Volumes/.MyWorkspace”).

A window opens showing the contents of the workspace and make the workspace temporarily visible as a subdirectory of “/Volumes.”

Macintosh Dual Port Network Failover Connections

The Macintosh G5 clients do not support dual port network failover connections in the Avid Unity ISIS environment. Dual port network connections are supported in the Avid Unity ISIS environment with Mac Pro clients.

Avid Unity ISIS IP Port Usage

Avid Unity ISIS v1.4 and later uses ports 4200 - 4599 on a dynamic basis for Firewall access. This access is for data transfers between the client and ISBs, as well as incoming message traffic from the System Director or ISBs. Previous releases used the port number range 4000-4399.

Network Connections

The ISIS network topology uses two separate domains, with one domain represented by the ISSs on the left side of the ISIS engine and the second domain represented by the ISSs on the right side. The default network IP address configuration is shown in the following table:

Page 23: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

23

For more addressing information, see “IP Addressing Overview” in the Avid Unity ISIS Setup Guide.

Avid Unity ISIS does not support Zone 1, 10/100 BASE-T network interface connections. 10/100 BASE-T clients must be attached as a Zone 2 or 3 client.

n AirSpeed devices and TransferManagers must be connected as Zone 1 or Zone 2 clients.

Spanning Tree PortFast Required with Dual Network Client Ports

If Spanning Tree PortFast is disabled when your system is recovering from a link failure using a dual network client port, a “semaphore time-out” error message appears.

Broadcom-Based Network Adapter Registry Key Setting

If you are connecting an Avid Unity ISIS client that uses a Broadcom®-based network adapter you might need to use the following procedure to reduce the risk of Reassembly Failures, especially at higher resolutions (such as Avid DNxHD® 145). Although the Broadcom network adapter does not have a provision today for setting the Transmit (Tx) or Receive (Rx) Descriptors like the Intel MT Server network adapter, there is a registry key that can be changed on the Rx side — the side that is important for improved Read performance — to minimize the risk of packet loss.

The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 client software includes the registry adjustment for the following computers.

• HP xw8600 workstation

• HP xw4400 workstation

• HP xw4600 workstation

If you install Avid Unity ISIS client software on other clients that use the Broadcom-based network adapter, you need to perform the following procedure to change the Rx registry key value.

Default Network Addresses for Avid Unity ISIS Engines

Location Network IP Addresses Subnet Mask

Left side of engine 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0

Right side of engine 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0

Page 24: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

To use the Administration tool, you need to have the Adobe® Flash® Player installed on your system. If you encounter problems with the Administration tool display, you might have an outdated version or multiple versions of the Flash Player installed. Uninstall any previous versions of Flash Player and install the Flash Player included on the Avid Unity ISIS installer DVD. Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 requires Flash Player v9.x and later.

Performance Overview

The performance for Avid Unity ISIS clients and servers is based on the generation of the switch hardware (ISS and IXS) in the engine and the Chunk Size. The following gives you a base number of the MB/s you can expect of each generation. For the most up-to-date performance data on Avid Unity ISIS, search the Avid Knowledge Base for the Avid Unity ISIS Performance Guide.

• Avid Unity ISIS v2.x hardware (ISS2000 and IXS2000) — The ISS2000 10-Gb port is able to support 600 MB/s per 10-Gb port to a Zone 2 switch. The 10-Gb clients are able get 300 MB/s regardless if they are connected to Zone 1 (direct connect) or Zone 2.

• Avid Unity ISIS v1.x hardware (ISS1000 and IXS1000) — The ISS1000 10-Gb port is able to support 230 MB/s per 10-Gb port to a Zone 2 switch. The ISS1000 is able to support up to the total 260 MB/s. The remainder of the network bandwidth on that ISS can then be allocated to Zone 1 clients.

For example, 14 DV 50 clients are connected to an ISS by way of a supported Zone 2 switch. The total bandwidth of these clients is approximately 224 MB/s. This allows for up to 36 MB/s of additional network bandwidth that can be used by Zone 1 clients or servers on the same ISS.

Known Issues

The following are known issues with the Avid Unity ISIS software. When a workaround exists, it appears in the paragraph directly following the issue description.

➤ If you monitor the performance in the Windows Monitor counters, you will notice there is no Chelsio network interface board listed in the Windows Vista clients. The 10-Gb Chelsio driver has not been updated for the Windows Vista operating system. Chelsio needs to update their driver for the Windows Vista 64-bit operating system before these counters are displayed.

Known Issues

30

To open the Performance Monitor:

1. Click Start > Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools > Advanced Tools > Open Reliability and Performance Monitor.

2. Select Performance Monitor.

3. Click Add then select “Network Interface.” The Chelsio network interface board is not listed.

➤ There is a limitation with the Windows XP 32-bit operating system that limits the line speed of 10 Gbps to display as 1.4 Gbps. This operating system limitation does not affect the actual network interface speed. This limitation is seen in the 10-Gb Chelsio driver Interface Status dialog box (Network Places > Properties > Chelsio > Status, the speed displays as 1.4Gbps).

➤ When logging into the LDAP Server in the LDAP Synchronization Tool, you must click the Connect button for successful login. Currently, pressing the Enter key does not log you in, and a failed login error is displayed. However, the Enter key or the Connect button both work when logging into Unity ISIS.

Workaround: You must click the Connect button when logging into the LDAP Server in the LDAP Synchronization Tool.

➤ If the Administration Tool is opened from the Client Manager, and an Avid Unity ISIS System Director failover occurs while the Administration Tool is open, the Administration Tool does not automatically reconnect to the new Active System Director.

Workaround: Once the Client Manager reconnects to the new Active System Director, you need to restart the Administration Tool within the Client Manager to connect to the new Active System Director.

➤ If you attempt to reinstall the client software from the Avid Unity ISIS installer DVD and select the repair option, an error message is displayed. The repair function is not supported in the Avid Unity ISIS software.

Workaround: You must uninstall the Avid Unity ISIS client software before installing a new version.

➤ If you attempt to mount large number of workspaces (more than 1800 workspaces), you might see an error message on Windows 64-bit systems stating, “The JVM could not be started. The main method may have thrown an exception.”

➤ The estimated amount of space available (which is usually measured in an amount of time at a particular resolution) might differ between what Avid Unity ISIS calculates and what the Avid editing system calculates.

Page 31: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

31

Avid Unity ISIS accurately reports how much space is available for raw media at a particular resolution.

The Avid editing application accounts for overhead in formatting of the media and is more conservative in reporting how much space is available.

➤ ISIS v2.0 has a new install status of “Downloading” when updating the ISB and switch firmware. While in the downloading state, the blade is downloading the firmware package from the FTP Publishing service on the System Director.

If a blade is in the downloading state for more that 15 minutes, it indicates that there is a problem retrieving the package or connecting to the FTP service.

Workaround: Open the Agent page for the blade and click the Statistics tab and click Network. Look for errors on either eth0 of eth1. If there are errors:

• Select “offline ISB”

• If possible move ISB to a new engine. If problem persists, the ISB should be replaced.

• If the ISB cannot be moved to a new engine, move it to a different slot. If the problem persists, reseat the switch associated with the network errors (eth0 is associated with the right switch, eth1 is associated with the left switch). If the problem persists the ISB should be replaced.

If no errors are displayed in the Network view of the Agent page, check cabling between the System Director and engine. Verify the FTP Publishing service is running on the System Director (Right-click My Computer > Manage> Services).

➤ When a new Engine which has 10 Gb Link Aggregation disabled is added to an existing stack which has 10 Gb Link Aggregation enabled, the Link Aggregation software might be stuck in a resolution state for up to 20 minutes. At the end of this resolution cycle, the Link Aggregation functionality will be disabled on all chassis. At this point, the existing Link Aggregation groups need to be deleted and recreated. Once the groups have been recreated, 10 Gb Link Aggregation needs to be enabled.

Workaround: Enable 10 Gb Link Aggregation on the Engine which is going to be added to the stack. When Link Aggregation is enabled on the Engine to be added, it will automatically take the trunking information from the stack.

➤ If a workspace is renamed while clients are using that workspace, the workspace gets removed/unmounted automatically from the Macintosh client system. Macintosh clients will need to remount the workspace with the new name (which should appear within Client Manager on the next auto refresh).

Page 32: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

Known Issues

32

➤ If you mount a workspace on your Windows client using the UNC (letterless) option in the Client Manager Preferences and perform I/O to that UNC mounted workspace, you are unable to unmount or disconnect that workspace.

n You are able to mount and unmount a UNC mounted workspace as long as you do not perform any I/O to that workspace.

Workaround: You must restart the Windows client.

➤ The Avid Unity ISIS Client software must be installed on the system after the Avid editing software. If you are updating your Avid software, install the Avid editing application first, uninstall the Avid Unity ISIS Client software, and install the new version of the Avid Unity ISIS client software.

If you installed the client software first the following message is displayed even if you have restarted your system.

“You must restart your system for the configuration changes made to Avid Unity ISIS Client to take effect. Click Yes to restart now or No if you plan to manually restart later.”

Workaround: To recover from this loop:

1. Click No on the “You must restart…” message.

2. Uninstall the Avid Unity ISIS Client software.

3. Restart the system.

4. Reinstall the Avid Unity ISIS Client software.

5. Restart the system.

➤ If you have ISBs or ISSs that are not able to be contacted, the Avid Unity ISIS Log Aggregator and ISB Connection Analysis tools hang waiting for a response from that component, requiring you to use the Windows Task Manager to quit the application.

For Log Aggregator, deselect the non-responsive hardware and re-run the application. For Connection Analyzer, you must resolve the hardware issue before using the application. To help investigate the problem, see Switch Infrastructure Diagnostics in the Avid Unity ISIS Administration Guide.

➤ When the maximum number of licensed user's are logged in to the Avid Unity ISIS environment and another client attempts to log in, an “Invalid username or password” error displays.

The message should state that the maximum number of licenses has been reached.

Page 33: Avid Unity™ ISISresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/ISIS_ReadMe_v2_0.pdf · The Avid Unity ISIS v2.0 documentation is now accessible in PDF format from the Help menu in the Avid

33

n The client limit that you are licensed for is programmed into the System Director's application key (dongle).

➤ All client editing systems using the following Avid release versions must stop capturing during a Full Redistribution if you are using Avid ISIS System Engines with i500 ISBs.

• Media Composer v2.7.2, v2.7.3, v2.7.4, and v3.x

• Avid Symphony Nitris v1.7.2, v1.7.4, and v3.x

• NewsCutter and NewsCutter XP v6.7.2, v6.7.4, and v7.x

• Avid Xpress Pro v5.7.2, v5.7.3, and v5.7.4

• Avid Instinct v1.7.2, v1.7.4, and v1.9

Once the Full Redistribution is in progress, the editor capture fails.

➤ When you make any changes in the storage group Details pane and click the Close button, you are asked if you would like to save your changes. If you click Yes, your changes are not saved. You must re-apply the changes and click Apply before you click the Close button.

Workaround: To avoid this issue, always click Apply before you click the Close button.

➤ The Macintosh Finder might display the Avid Unity ISIS folder contents incorrectly. For example, the contents of folders containing items whose name includes a pound sign (#) followed by numeric characters. For example, “project # 12” might be erroneously displayed with some items duplicated and some items missing.

Workaround: Avid recommends avoiding the use of names that include a pound sign (#) followed by numeric characters.

➤ Close all applications that use an Avid Unity ISIS workspace and unmount all workspaces before you attempt to restart or shut down your Macintosh client. If the mounted workspace is busy, you might see an error message from Client Manager about not being able to unmount the workspaces.

Workaround: Manually unmount the workspaces on the Macintosh client as follows:

1. Start the Terminal application:

Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app

2. At the command prompt in the Terminal Window, type:

umount /Volumes/<workspace-name> and press Enter

➤ The Path Diagnostics customized setting for Posix® tests does not work correctly on the Macintosh clients. Use the default option to automatically select the File Access Method instead.

➤ Deleting an ISS from a stack does not clear engine configuration.

Use the Reset Factory defaults button to clear stack configuration info.

➤ If your Avid Unity ISIS environment includes an Avid Unity MediaManager as a client running on Windows Server 2000 SP4, the application event log on the system enters five informational messages in the Application Log regarding the AvidUnityISISClientAgent on every restart of the system. These extra error messages are harmless and have no affect on the application or environment.

➤ When in the Advance tab of the Switch Agent page and you select Switch Blade > “Reset to factory defaults” and enter the password to confirm the reset, one of the two switches in the Engine becomes the master and the other switch keeps restarting.

Workaround: Log into the ISS Agent on the new master, click the System tab and select Basic, then click Submit in the Chassis Configuration window to correct the restarting issue.
