REAL-WORLD AND RAPID FACE RECOGNITION TOWARDS POSE AND

EXPRESSION VARIATIONS VIA FEATURE LIBRARY MATRIX AVERZS

IEEE 2015

This paper presents an automated system for human face recognition in a real time

background world for a large homemade dataset of persons face. The task is very

difficult as the real time background subtraction in an image is still a challenge.

Addition to this there is a huge variation in human face image in terms of size, pose

and expression. In this paper, a novel method for face recognition under pose and

expression variations is proposed from only a single image in the gallery. 3D

Probabilistic Facial Expression Recognition Generic Elastic Model (3D PFER-GEM)

is proposed to reconstruct a 3D model from real-world human face using only a single

2D frontal image with/without facial expressions. Then, a Feature Library Matrix

(FLM) is generated for each subject in the gallery from all face poses by rotating the

3D reconstructed models and extracting features in the rotated face pose. Therefore,

each FLM is subsequently rendered for each subject in the gallery based on triplet

angles of face poses. Also, before matching the FLM, an initial estimate of triplet

angles is obtained from the face pose in probe images using an automatic head pose

estimation approach. Then, an array of the FLM is selected for each subject based on

the estimated triplet angles. Finally, the selected arrays from FLMs are compared with

extracted features from the probe image by iterative scoring classification using the

support vector machine.

HYPERSPECTRAL FACE RECOGNITION WITH SPATIOSPECTRAL

INFORMATION FUSION AND PLS REGRESSION

AVERZS IEEE 2015

The luminance insensitivity that reflects the angle of human facial aspects occurs once

the distance between the object and the camera is too different such as animated

images. This has been a problem for facial recognition system for decades. For this

reason, our study represents a novel technique for facial recognition through the

implementation of Successes Mean Quantization Transform and Spare Network of

Winnow with the assistance of Eigen-face computation. After having limited the

frame of the input image or images from Web-Cam, the image is cropped into an oval

or eclipse shape. Then the image is transformed into greyscale color and is normalized

in order to reduce colour complexities. We also focus on the special characteristics of

Page 26: Averzs technologies

human facial aspects such as nostril areas and oral areas. After every essential aspect

is scrutinized, the input image goes through the recognition system for facial

identification. In some cases where the input image from the Web-Cam does not exist

in the database, the user will be notified for the error handled. Hyper-spectral imaging

offers new opportunities for face recognition via improved discrimination along the

spectral dimension. However, it poses new challenges, including low signal-to-noise

ratio, inter-band misalignment, and high data dimensionality. Due to these challenges,

the literature on hyper-spectral face recognition is not only sparse but is limited to ad

hoc dimensionality reduction techniques and lacks comprehensive evaluation. We

propose a hyper-spectral face recognition algorithm using a spatio-spectral covariance

for band fusion and partial least square regression for classification. Moreover, we

extend 13 existing face recognition techniques, for the first time, to perform hyper-

spectral face recognition. We formulate hyper-spectral face recognition as an image-

set classification problem and evaluate the performance of seven state-of-the-art

image-set classification techniques. We also test six state-of-the-art gray scale and

RGB (color) face recognition algorithms after applying fusion techniques on hyper-

spectral images.

We present a real-time liveness detection approach against photograph spoofing in

face recognition. The approach requires no extra hardware except for a generic web-

camera. For purpose of quick and accurate recognition of the blink behaviour, eye

closity, an easily-computed discriminative measure derived from the adaptive

boosting algorithm, is developed, and then smoothly embedded into the conditional

model. An extensive set of experiments are presented to show effectiveness of our

approach and how it outperforms the cascaded Adaboost and HMM in task of

eyeblink detection. Sparse representation (or sparse coding) based classification has

been successfully applied to face recognition. However, it can become problematic in

the presence of illumination variations or occlusions. In this paper, we propose a

Manifold Regularized Local Sparse Representation (MRLSR) model to address such

difficulties. The key idea behind the MRLSR method is that all coding vectors in

sparse representation should be group sparse, which means holding the two properties

of both individual sparsity and local similarity. As a consequence, the face recognition

rate can be considerably improved. The MRLSR model is optimized by the modified

homotopy algorithm, which keeps stable under different choices of the weighting

parameter. Extensive experiments are performed on various face databases, which

contain illumination variations and occlusions. We show that the proposed method

outperforms the state-of-theart approaches, and provides the highest recognition rate.

AVERZS IEEE 2015

Fingerprint image enhancement is one of the most crucial steps in an automated

fingerprint identification system. In this paper, an effective algorithm for fingerprint

image quality improvement is proposed. The algorithm consists of two stages. The

first stage is decomposing the input fingerprint image into four subbands by applying

two-dimensional discrete wavelet transform. At the second stage, the compensated

image is produced by adaptively obtaining the compensation coefficient for each

subband based on the referred Gaussian template. The experimental results indicated

that the compensated image quality was higher than that of the original image. The

proposed algorithm can improve the clarity and continuity of ridge structures in a

fingerprint image. Therefore, it can achieve higher fingerprint classification rates than

related methods can.

SPOOFING DETECTION

AVERZS IEEE 2015

Biometrics systems have significantly improved person identification and

authentication, playing an important role in personal, national, and global security.

However, these systems might be deceived (or spoofed) and, despite the recent

advances in spoofing detection, current solutions often rely on domain knowledge,

specific biometric reading systems, and attack types. We assume a very limited

knowledge about biometric spoofing at the sensor to derive outstanding spoofing

detection systems for iris, face, and fingerprint modalities based on two deep learning

approaches. The first approach consists of learning suitable convolutional network

architectures for each domain, whereas the second approach focuses on learning the

weights of the network via back propagation. We consider nine biometric spoofing

benchmarks—each one containing real and fake samples of a given biometric

modality and attack type— and learn deep representations for each benchmark by

combining and contrasting the two learning approaches. This strategy not only

provides better comprehension of how these approaches interplay, but also creates

systems that exceed the best known results in eight out of the nine benchmarks. The

results strongly indicate that spoofing detection systems based on convolutional

networks can be robust to attacks already known and possibly adapted, with little

effort, to image-based attacks that are yet to come.

methodology is yet to emerge. This paper investigates 3D representation of widely

employed 2D minutiae features by recovering and incorporating (i) minutiae height z

and (ii) its 3D orientation f information and illustrates an effective matching strategy

for matching popular minutiae features extended in 3D space. One of the obstacles of

the emerging 3D fingerprint identification systems to replace the conventional 2D

fingerprint system lies in their bulk and high cost, which is mainly contributed from

the usage of structured lighting system or multiple cameras. This paper attempts to

addresses such key limitations of the current 3D fingerprint technologies by

developing the single camera-based 3D fingerprint identification system. We develop

a generalized 3D minutiae matching model and recover extended 3D fingerprint

features from the reconstructed 3D fingerprints. 2D fingerprint images acquired for

the 3D fingerprint reconstruction can themselves be employed for the performance

improvement and have been illustrated in the work detailed in this paper. This paper

also attempts to answer one of the most fundamental questions on the availability of

inherent discriminable information from 3D fingerprints. The experimental results are

presented on a database of 240 clients 3D fingerprints, which is made publicly

available to further research efforts in this area, and illustrate the discriminant power

of 3D minutiae representation and matching to achieve performance improvement.

IRIS RECOGNITION: WHAT IS BEYOND BIT FRAGILITY?

The concept of fragility of some bits in the iris codes regards exclusively their within-

class variation, i.e., the probability that they take different values in templates

computed from different images of the same iris. This paper extends that concept, by

noticing that a similar phenomenon occurs for the between-classes comparisons, i.e.,

some bits have higher probability than others of assuming a predominant value, which

was observed for near-infrared and (in a more evident way) for visible wavelength

data. Accordingly, we propose a new measure (bit discriminability) that considers

both the within-class and between-classes variabilities, and has roots in the Fisher

discriminant. Based on the bit discriminability, we compare the usefulness of the

different regions of the iris for biometric recognition, with respect to multispectral

data and to different filters parameterizations. Finally, we measure the amount of

information lost in codes quantization, which gives insight to further research on iris

matching strategies that consider both phase and magnitude. Albeit augmenting the

computational burden of recognition, such kind of strategies will consistently improve

performance, particularly in poor-quality data.
