Deal to demilitarise Sirte TDT, agencies

The Tripoli-based Govern-ment of National Accord

(GNA) and the Libyan National Army under the command of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar reportedly reached a deal to make Libya’s Sirte a demilita-rised zone.

Sirte will also become the temporary headquarters of the new authority, said an AlAy-am report quoting Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper.

According to the newspaper, the rivals armies would with-draw from the city, in addi-tion to declaring a permanent truce.

Al- Arabiya sources reported that Libya agrees with Egypt to establish a joint military force that includes the army, police and special forces to protect Sirte and Al-Jufrah and fully

secure the oil sites.Besides, a Libyan committee

said will review all the Turkish agreements signed with the reconciliation government.

The Libyan army affirmed its adherence to cancelling military agreements and se-curity cooperation with Tur-key and limiting intelligence cooperation that allows the appointment of Turkish mili-tary figures inside Libya.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un issued a rare apology yesterday over

what he described as the “unex-pected and disgraceful” killing of a South Korean at sea, Seoul’s presidential office said.

Apologies from the North -- let alone attributed to Kim personally -- are extremely un-usual, and the message comes with inter-Korean ties in deep freeze as well as a stand-off in nuclear negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington.

Analysts said the North was looking to placate its neighbour after the shooting -- the first time its forces killed a Southern citizen for a decade -- provoked outrage in the South.

The fisheries official was shot dead on Tuesday by North Ko-rean soldiers, and Seoul says his body was set on fire while still in the water, apparently as a precaution against coronavirus infection.

Kim was “very sorry” for the “unexpected and disgraceful event” that had “disappoint-ed President Moon and South Koreans”, rather than helping them in the face of the “mali-cious coronavirus”, said Suh Hoon, the South’s National Se-curity Adviser.

ter from the department of the North’s ruling party responsible for relations with the South.

In it, Pyongyang acknowl-edged firing around 10 shots at the man, who had “illegally en-tered our waters” and refused to properly identify himself.

Border guards fired at him in accordance with standing instructions, it said.

There was no immediate con-firmation of the contents from the North, whose state media did not mention the incident on Friday.

North Korean defector turned Seoul-based researcher Ahn Chan-il said it was “ex-tremely rare for the North’s supreme commander to offer an apology, especially to South Koreans and their President”.

“I think this is the first since

the 1976 Korean axe murder incident,” he said, referring to the killing of two US officers in the Demilitarized Zone that divides the peninsula.

were attacked at random when taking a cigarette break. The life of neither was in danger, he said.

“This attack happened in a

symbolic place at the time when the trial of the terrible attacks on Charlie Hebdo took place,” he said.

Europe 1 radio quoted police officials as saying the main sus-pect was 18, was known to se-curity services and was born in Pakistan.

One police source said a ma-chete had been found at the scene. Another police sources said a meat cleaver had been found there.

On spot resolutions were reached in several of the

issues raised by Indian commu-nity members during a virtual open house held yesterday by the Indian Embassy in Bahrain.

Led by Indian Ambassador Piyush Srivastava with his con-sular team, the session focused on urgent, non-routine consular, and labour issues raised by com-munity members.

The issues not resolved yester-day, the envoy said, will be rec-tified after collecting required documents.

The embassy, he said, would revert to the concerned person in due course.

Complaints also reached the embassy through the consul’s

twitter account @IndiaInBah-rain.

In one such posts, a user @Sanju_80 wrote, “I have been stuck in Bahrain without any job and any kind of financial and mental support. Don’t have money buy food & medicines, No place to stay. I am from poor family, I have two small kids, god knows when I will leave Bahrain and meet my small children or I will be spending rest of my whole life here in Bahrain. “

During the session, the ambas-sador encouraged community members to follow the embassy through its website and social media accounts to get updated on COVID-19 developments. He also urged community members to make use of the current Am-nesty being provided by Bahrain till 31 December 2020.

On this note, Srivastava re-minded participants on the air-bubble arrangement in place between India and Bahrain since 11 September 2020.

The deal allows national carri-ers of both countries to operate a specific number of flights from India to Bahrain and vice-versa, the envoy added.

He also reminded that passen-gers who wish to make use of the opportunity could book their tickets directly through Airlines’ websites or travel

Head of the Libyan Parlia-ment, Agila Saleh, con-

firmed that the meeting that took place in Cairo with the commander of the army, Khal-ifa Haftar.

In an exclusive interview with Al-Arabiya, Saleh indicat-ed reaching an agreement with Haftar to support the Libyan armed forces.

Saleh stressed that the “Cai-ro Declaration” is the closest to resolving the Libyan crisis.

He also stressed that after forming the authority, the Libyan armed forces would merge, and expel mercenaries from the country.

Saleh further indicated that Sirte would be the seat of the interim government until its formation per a political agree-ment.

He added that each Libyan region would name its repre-sentative in the Presidential Council, and it is not permissi-ble for the speaker and prime minister to be from the same area.

Libya has been riven by vi-olence since Col Muammar Gaddafi was deposed by Na-to-backed forces in 2011.

The oil-rich nation is a key transit point for migrants heading to Europe from Africa.

Bahraini coast guard pa-trols confiscated a fishing vessel yesterday for em-

ploying banned bottom trawl nets in the waters of Bahrain.

Coast guard officials also cap-tured 240 kilograms of shrimp caught using the method, which destroys far more ocean habitat than any other fishing practice.

Bahrain has banned the usage of bottom trawls as per Minis-terial Resolution No. (205) of 2018.

coordination meeting held in the Jordanian capital Amman stressing two-state solution as key to end the Palestinian-Is-raeli conflict.

Bahrain’s foreign ministry statement expresses hope that efforts like these will open the

opportunity to lead Palestine and Israel to a comprehensive political dialogue to end the conflict.

The police chief said they were acting on a tip-off re-

The construction works of a Sewage transmission line linking Ramli hous-

ing project and the Buri and Aali regions are going on as planned, Works Minister said.

Essam Khalaf, the Minister of Works, Municipalities Af-fairs and Urban Planning, said these works are part of the first stage development of $6 million Shaikh Zayed Highway Devel-opment Project which began in August last year.

The sewage network pro-ject upon completion will give a qualitative upgrade to the sanitation services and ensure a healthy environment for the citizens in line with the Gov-ernment work programme and Economic Vision 2030.

The current first phase of the project planned in four stages includes the construction of a main 1.6km transmission line from Ramli Housing Project to Sheikh Isa bin Salman Street, and the construction of a sew-age lifting station. It will have a depth of 13 meters and a pump-ing capacity of 950 litres/sec.

The Ministry has also con-structed a sewage line from Ramli housing project to the existing sewage network in Sal-mabad, temporarily until the current project reaches com-pletion.

The minister said this as he visited the project site accom-panied by Assistant Undersec-retary for Sanitation, Ibrahim Hassan Al-Hawaj, and the Di-rector of the Sanitation Plan-ning and Projects Department, Fathi Abdullah Al-Farea, several engineers, and the project con-

tractors.

45pc completionEssam Khalaf said the Shaikh

Zayed Highway Development Project, which also includes the sanitation project, has achieved a 45 per cent completion.

“It is one of the important strategic road network devel-opment projects in the Kingdom connecting the villages of Aali, Salmabad and Madinat Zayed towards Sheikh Khalifa bin Sal-man Street to Manama and vice versa,” the minister said.

The project aims at providing easy access to the Isa Town, and ease traffic jams in front of the Bahrain National Stadium. The project will expand the Sheikh Zayed Road into three lanes in each direction from December 16 Highway to Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Highway and from the western roundabout of A’ali to Shaikh Isa bin Salman High-way.

Four roundabouts along the Shaikh Zayed Highway will be converted into intersections with traffic lights with the

project also including lighting work, roadblocks, traffic signs, revamping the asphalt layers, beautification and landscaping as well as rainwater drainage, the minister said.

To reduce congestionUpon completion, the high-

way will have a capacity to ac-commodate 53,000 vehicles per day in two directions and will help reduce traffic congestion in the A’ali and Salmabad areas.

It is worth noting that the pro-ject was awarded to the Western

Baynunah Group Company by the Tender Board, where work began in August 2019 and is ex-pecting completion in mid-2021. The total value of the project is 23,400,000 BD (twenty-three million and four hundred thou-sand BD) and funded by a fund Abu Dhabi Development.

Yet another part of the main-line is also being completed. That project includes the ex-tension of 1.8 km of pipelines, which costs 1,518,825 dinars. Work began last March will end in the first quarter of 2021.

The “mobile monitoring sys-tem” launched to detect

municipal violations here has identified 2,386 violations dur-ing the period from January to September, a top works ministry official said.

The number translates to as a staggering 80 per cent increase in violations from a year ago. In the same period of 2019, the online system detected 1,322 vi-olations, said Sheikh Muham-mad bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, the Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs at the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Ur-ban Planning.

The system which works us-ing a single electronic portal provides an integrated database about violations allows inspec-tors to access them through an electronic portal and smart de-vices.

The digital system monitors and keeps track of violations of municipal laws regarding build-ing regulation acts, laws allow-ing reconstruction, public road works, advertising, public-hy-giene and housing laws.

“Road works related violations emerged at the top spot in the eight-month evaluation period,” said the official. Ramshackle re-al-estates, illegal constructions,

buildings without a permit, ad-vertisements past their expiry dates were the others.

When it comes to Cleaning services Department, the Un-

dersecretary said the majority of the violations were for “leaving or placing discarded vehicles on streets, sidewalks, public squares and beaches.”

Inspectors also booked people for dumping wastes in places other than designated for them and washing vehicles or similar actions turning public-places into swamps.

Authorities, Sheikh Muham-mad, said, also dealt with vio-lations related to illegal street encroachments, illegal parking of vehicles with for sale or rent

stickers in public places, cleanli-ness of public-places during the periodic followup.

Since the launch of the mobile monitoring system under the patronage of Sheikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, the Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Ministerial Committee for Development Projects and Infrastructure, on January 19, 2020, the ministry has distribut-ed 49 devices and provided the necessary training to employees on their usage.

The ministry has also created

a specialised team to evaluate the system and solve technical issues that may arise.

All of the municipalities in the Kingdom are currently using the mobile monitoring system to detected municipal violations.

“The new violation registra-tion system constitutes a qualita-tive leap in rectifying violations by helping inspectors to retrieve all required information with ease at any time,” said Sheikh Muhammad.

India plans to offer $4.6 bil-lion in incentives to com-panies setting up advanced

battery manufacturing facilities as it seeks to promote the use of electric vehicles and cut down its dependence on oil, according to a government proposal.

A proposal drafted by NITI Aayog, a federal think tank chaired by Prime Minister Nar-endra Modi, said India could slash its oil import bills by as much as $40 billion by 2030 if electric vehicles were widely adopted. The proposal is likely to be reviewed by Modi’s cabi-

net in the coming weeks, said a senior government official, who was not authorised to comment on the matter and declined to be identified. NITI Aayog and the Indian government did not re-spond to requests for comment.

The think tank recommend-ed incentives of $4.6 billion by 2030 for companies manufac-turing advanced batteries, start-ing with cash and infrastructure incentives of 9 billion rupees ($122 million) in the next finan-cial year which would then be ratcheted up annually.

“Currently, the battery energy storage industry is at a very nas-cent stage in India with inves-tors being a little apprehensive to invest in a sunrise industry,” the proposal said.

India plans to retain its im-

port tax rate of 5 per cent for certain types of batteries, in-cluding batteries for electric vehicles, until 2022, but will increase it to 15pc thereafter to promote local manufacturing, the document said.

Though keen to reduce its oil dependence and cut down on pollution, India’s efforts to promote electric vehicles have been stymied by a lack of in-vestment in manufacturing and infrastructure such as charg-ing stations. Just 3,400 electric cars were sold in the world’s second-most populous nation during the last business year, compared to sales of 1.7 million conventional passenger cars.

The policy could benefit battery makers such as South Korea’s LG Chem and Japan’s

Panasonic Corp as well as au-tomakers which have started building EVs in India such as Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.

The draft proposal said an-nual domestic demand for bat-tery storage and market size - currently less than 50 gigawatt hours and worth just over to $2 billion - could grow to 230 giga-watt hours and more than $14 billion in ten years time.

It did not offer an estimate of how many electric cars it expected to be on the road by 2030. The proposal estimates it would cost firms some $6 billion over five years to set up manu-facturing facilities with the sup-port of government subsidies.

Huawei research lab in southern China catches fire: state media

A research lab belonging to Chinese tech giant Hua-

wei Technologies in the south-ern city of Dongguan caught fire yesterday and firefight-ers are currently at the scene, Chinese state media reported citing local authorities.

The fire is currently being extinguished and there are currently no casualties, state broadcaster CCTV said on its official Weibo account.

Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for com-ment.

The lab in the city’s Song-shan Lake area is a steel struc-ture and the main material burning is sound-absorbing cotton, Dongguan city fire rescue department said in a statement.

The lab mainly conducts re-search into materials as well as testing for 4G and 5G antennas related to Huawei’s base sta-tion business, a source familiar with the matter said.

It is part of a larger Huawei manufacturing facility. The company has another sprawl-ing European-themed campus close by, which has offices for 25,000 employees.

Vodafone Group Plc has won an international ar-

bitration case against the Indi-an government in a $2 billion tax dispute, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said.

An international arbitration tribunal in The Hague ruled that India’s imposition of a tax liability on Vodafone, as well as interest and penalties, were in a breach of an investment treaty agreement between In-dia and the Netherlands, one of the sources said.

The tribunal, in its ruling, said the government must cease seeking the dues from Vodafone and should also pay 4.3 million pounds ($5.47 m) to the company as partial com-pensation for its legal costs, the source said.

Vodafone and India’s fi-nance ministry did not imme-diately respond to a request for comment.

The tax dispute stems from Vodafone’s acquisition of the Indian mobile assets from Hutchison Whampoa in 2007.

The government said Voda-fone was liable to pay taxes on the acquisition, which the company contested.

In 2012, India’s top court ruled in favour of the telecom provider but the government later that year changed the rules to enable it to tax deals that had already been conclud-ed.

In April 2014, Vodafone ini-tiated arbitration proceedings against India.

India is entangled in more than a dozen international ar-bitration cases against compa-nies, including Cairn Energy over retrospective tax claims and cancellation of contracts. The exchequer could end up paying billions of dollars in damages if it loses.

As much as $380 billion from the US Congress’ last big coronavirus aid

package is unused and could help households and businesses if lawmakers approve, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Thursday.

That is far short of the $500 billion to $1 trillion many econo-mists had expected in new fiscal stimulus for the flagging recov-ery. But rising tensions between

Republicans and Democrats have made a new relief package ahead of the Nov. 3 election look increasingly unlikely.

The unused money, author-ised by Congress in March as part of a $2.3 trillion aid package but not yet spent, could go a long way to tide over businesses and keep people who have lost work from losing their homes.

“It would not cost an extra penny,” Mnuchin told members

of the Senate Banking Commit-tee in a hearing on Capitol Hill, where he appeared jointly with Powell. Congress would need to give permission for reshuffling the money, he said.

The Treasury still has $200 billion in unused funds ear-marked to backstop emergency programs launched by the US central bank after the corona-virus outbreak, Mnuchin said.

The Fed’s lending programs

got far less use than initially thought, in large part because their very availability helped return disrupted credit and fi-nancial markets to more normal functioning.

Separately, some $130 billion is left in the now-expired Pay-check Protection Program that could go to help small business-es, Mnuchin said.

In addition, Powell said in re-sponse to a question from com-

mittee chair Mike Crapo, most of the $75 billion allocated to backstop the Fed’s Main Street Lending Programme remains unused.

The programme, which has so far lent about $2 billion to medium-sized companies, could extend as much as $30 billion in loans by year’s end, Powell said Thursday.

With the Treasury commit-ting $1 for every $8 loaned un-der the programme, that would still leave idle $70 billion of the Treasury’s backstop.

Despite a return to growth, after last quarter’s sharpest eco-nomic downturn in the postwar period, 11 million Americans re-main unemployed. Any money remaining from stimulus checks and extra unemployment bene-fits from the earlier pandemic relief package is quickly running out.

“The risk is they will go through that money, ultimately, and have to cut back on spending and maybe lose their home or their lease,” Powell said.

Without further government aid, he said, “we will see, sooner or later, probably sooner, we will see that the economy has a hard-er time sustaining the growth that we’ve seen, that ’s the risk.”

The focus on reallocating un-used sums from the earlier relief

package has emerged as Con-gress remains deadlocked over providing new fiscal relief less than six weeks before Election Day.

Mnuchin told senators that he and House Speaker Nancy Pelo-si had agreed to discuss stimu-lus further. Asked by reporters Thursday if she had heard from Mnuchin, Pelosi said “I spoke to him yesterday. I don’t know if we have a call today or not.”

Under Crapo’s questioning, Powell agreed that some of the money - perhaps

$50 billion, Crapo said - could be put to better use to help the

economy, including for the paycheck pro-tection programme to help small businesses

dia’s Hero MotoCorp for a dis-tribution deal which will allow the US company’s motorcycles to be sold in India, after it stops local manufacturing there, three sources told Reuters.

The Milwaukee-based com-pany said on Thursday it will stop sales and shut its manufac-turing plant in India, effectively abandoning the world’s biggest motorcycle market after a dec-ade of unsuccessful efforts to gain a foothold.

Harley, however, is in talks with Hero over a distribution arrangement that will allow the Indian company to import and sell Harley bikes as its sole distributor, two sources with familiar with the talks said.

“Hero will be the master distributor for Harley bikes in

India ... This will be a partner-ship, a strategic alliance,” said one of the sources, all of whom declined to be named as the discussions were private.

Discussions are also ongoing to let Hero become a contract manufacturer for at least one Harley motorcycle with 300-600 cc engine capacity, which it will launch later, the first source added. The financial details of the deal were not im-mediately clear.

Asked about talks with Hero, a Harley spokeswoman said the company would not comment on speculation. On Thursday, it said it was changing its busi-ness model in India evaluating options to continue to serve customers.

Hero MotoCorp, India’s largest two-wheeler manufac-turer by sales, also declined to comment on market spec-ulation. It produced 6.4 mil-lion two-wheeler scooters and motorcycles in the fiscal year

ending March 2020, a third of India’s total output.

Harley manufactured 4,500 motorcycles during that period, largely assembled from import-ed knock-down kits at its plant near New Delhi, which it will shut as part of its restructuring.

Harley, known for its heavy touring motorcycles, strug-gled in India mainly because of high import duties - which US President Donald Trump often criticized India for - and also because its locally assembled bikes faced high taxes.

Hero typically sells motor-cycles with engine capacity of under 200 cc and a deal with Harley will boost its entry into the mid- and high-engine mar-ket favoured by biking enthu-siasts and fashion conscious younger riders, the second source said. Harley’s 33 deal-erships will likely come under Hero’s management under the new arrangement, said one of the sources.

ing to start administering exper-imental coronavirus vaccines to people while clinical trials were still underway, a Chinese health official said yesterday.

China launched its emergen-cy programme in July, having communicated with the WHO in late June, according to Zheng Zhongwei, a National Health Commission official.

Hundreds of thousands es-sential workers and other limit-ed groups of people considered at high risk of infection have been given the vaccine, even though its efficacy and safety had not been fully established

as Phase 3 clinical trials were incomplete.

“At end-June, China’s State Council approved a plan of COV-ID-19 vaccine emergency use program,” Zheng told a news conference.

A powerful Vatican cardinal caught up in a real estate

scandal resigned suddenly yes-terday and gave up his right to take part in an eventual conclave to elect a pope, in one of the most mysterious episodes to hit the Holy See in years.

A brief statement, issued unusually in the evening, said that Pope Francis had accept-ed the resignation of Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, head of the department that decides who will be the saints of the Roman Catholic Church.

But perhaps more signifi-cantly, the statement said the Becciu, 72, had “given up the rights associated with being a cardinal”.

The one-line statement gave no details but the most impor-tant right of Roman Catholic cardinals under 80, as is Bec-ciu, is to take part in a conclave to elect a new pope after the current pope dies or resigns.

The relinquishing of that right indicated that the reason for Becciu’s resignation was particularly serious. The last cardinal to give up that right was Cardinal Keith O’Brien of Scotland, who resigned over a sex scandal in 2013.

Becciu was until 2018 depu-ty secretary of state, one of the most powerful positions in the

Vatican.During his tenure in that

office the Vatican became embroiled in a controversial deal in which the Secretariat of State used Church money to purchase a luxury building in London as an investment.

That investigation led to the suspension last year of five Vatican employees, the resig-nation of the Vatican’s police chief and the departure of the former head of the Vatican’s Fi-nancial Information Authority (AIF).

Becciu has denied all wrong-doing in the London property deal and defended the pur-chase, saying the property has increased in value.

In June, Vatican police ar-rested Gianluigi Torzi, an Ital-ian middleman who was part of a controversial deal, and charged him with extortion, embezzlement, aggravated fraud and money laundering, the Vatican press office said in a statement.

A landmine detection rat in Cambodia has been award-

ed for saving lives, “lifesaving bravery and devotion to duty”.

The giant African pouched rat has been formally recognised for his work and been presented with a miniature gold medal, the animal equivalent of the George Cross. He was awarded by the British veterinary chari-ty People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) for his work de-tecting undetonated landmines in Cambodia.

Cambodia has spent years slowly clearing the land of explosives, but it’s dangerous work. This is where Magawa, the rat, comes in.

Magawa, who was trained by the Belgian charity APOPO, has sniffed out 39 landmines and 28 items of unexploded ordnance, making him the organisation’s most successful “HeroRAT”.

“The work of HeroRAT Maga-wa and APOPO is truly unique and outstanding,” said PDSA di-rector-general Jan McLoughlin.

“HeroRAT Magawa’s work directly saves and changes the lives of men, women and chil-dren who are impacted by these landmines.”

Millions of landmines were laid in Cambodia between 1975 and 1998, causing tens of thou-

sands of casualties.Magawa, based in the north-

ern city of Siem Reap, is the first rat to receive a PDSA medal in the 77 years of the awards, join-ing an illustrious band of brave canines and felines -- and even a pigeon. The PDSA Gold Medal is the animal equivalent of Brit-ain’s George Cross. The charity also awards the Dickin Medal, for military animals.

Sniff and scratch APOPO trained Magawa in his

native Tanzania to detect the chemical compound within ex-plosives by rewarding him with

tasty treats -- his favourite being bananas and peanuts.

The rats alert de-miners by scratching the earth.

He can scurry across an area the size of a tennis court in just 30 minutes, something that would take four days using a conventional metal detector.

He is big enough to be at-tached to a leash as he goes about his business but light enough not to set off mines.

“The PDSA Gold Medal award brings the problem of landmines to global attention,” said Chris-tophe Cox of APOPO.

Cox said its team of “Her-

oRATs” speeded up landmine detection because of their keen sense of smell and recall.

“Unlike metal detectors, the rats ignore scrap metal and only sniff out explosives making them fast and efficient landmine detectors,” Cox said.

“This not only saves lives but returns much-needed safe land back to the communities as quickly and cost-effectively as possible.”

APOPO currently has 45 rats finding landmines and 31 de-tecting tuberculosis in Africa and Asia, according to its web-site.

Scientists have unearthed the remains of Jurassic sea

predators resembling killer whales in the world’s driest desert in Chile.

Pliosaurs were reptiles from about 160 million years ago with a more powerful bite than Tyrannosaurus rex, ac-cording to University of Chile researchers. The fossils are the second oldest record of this species in the Southern Hemisphere.

Chile’s vast Atacama desert, once largely submerged be-neath the Pacific Ocean, is now a moonscape of sand and stone with parts untouched by rain for years. Pliosaurs reined the

region, with their large skull, elongated face, short neck, menacing teeth on a hydrody-namic body and fin-like limbs.

Scientists found jaw, tooth and limb fragments of the creatures “ecologically sim-ilar” to killer whales at two sites in the Loa river basin near the mining city of Calama.

The find helps scientists fill gaps in evolution, said Rodrigo Otero, a University of Chile paleontologist who led the re-search.

The complete fossil, under excavation since 2017, is likely to measure six to seven meters (19.7 to 23 feet). The skull is around a meter (3.3 feet) long, with teeth each around eight to 10 centimeters (3.1 to 3.9 inches) long, Otero said.

Valtteri Bottas continued his habit of being fastest

yesterday when he topped the times for Mercedes in both opening practice sessions at the Russian Grand Prix.

The Finn clocked a best lap in one minute and 33.159 seconds around the Olympic Park circuit to outpace his team-mate and runaway championship leader Lewis Hamilton by two-tenths of a second in the second ses-sion.

The two Mercedes men were more than a second clear of third-placed Daniel Ricciardo of Renault despite enduring a difficult day of off-track excur-sions on the slippery track.

Bottas, who is 55 points adrift of the six-time champion in this year’s title race, knows he has to take advantage of his opportuni-ty at one of his favourite circuits to keep his challenge alive – while Hamilton is bidding to equal Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 Grand Prix wins.

It was the sixth Friday in a row that had seen Bottas topping the times – and at a track where he claimed his maiden win in 2017 and where Mercedes are unbeaten, having won all six events since the inaugural race in 2014. Hamilton has won four times and former team-mate Nico Rosberg won in 2016 on his way to claiming the title.

In front of a meagre scattering of fans to witness practice, with 30,000 due to attend Sunday’s

Lionel Messi has launched his latest attack on Barce-

lona’s hierarchy by criticising the way the club treated strike partner Luis Suarez, who left for La Liga rivals Atletico Ma-drid this week.

Captain Messi, who threat-ened to leave Barca last month and recently hit out at club president Josep Maria Bar-tomeu’s leadership, said Uru-guayan Suarez was harshly treated.

New coach Ronald Koeman called Suarez several days after getting the job to inform the striker, who had one year left on his contract, that he was no longer wanted.

Bartomeu had left 33-year-ol d Suarez - the c lub ’s third-highest scorer of all time - off a list of players he considered not for sale in the aftermath of the 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Cham-pions League in August.

“You deserved a farewell be-fitting who you are: one of the most important players in the history of the club, achieving great things for the team and on an individual level,” Messi wrote on his official Instagram account yesterday.

“You did not deserve for them to throw you out like they did. But the truth is that at this stage nothing surprises me anymore.”

Suarez had paid tribute to Messi in his farewell news con-ference on Thursday, recalling that everyone had told him the Argentinian was difficult to get on with, but declaring they had become best friends as well as prolific strike partners.

“It will be strange to see you in another shirt and even stranger to come up against you on the pitch,” Messi said.

“I had already begun to im-agine it but today I went into the dressing room and it truly dawned on me.

Chasing a moderate target of 176, CSK openers Shane Watson and Murali Vijay played cau-tiously and had a 23-run part-nership. All-rounder Axar Patel provided the first breakthrough as he bagged Watson (14) in the fifth over.

Faf du Plessis joined Vijay in the middle but the latter failed to convert the start and was dis-missed by pacer Anrich Nortje in the last over of the powerplay.

Vijay scored 10 runs off 15 balls. Ruturaj Gaikwad (5) came in to bat at number four but failed to impress with the bat. He was sent back to the pavil-

ion after getting run out in the 10th over.

Kedhar Jadhav and Faf built the innings and stitched a 54-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Jadhav scored 26 runs off 21 balls before he was caught in front of the wickets by Nortje in the 16th over.

CSK skipper Dhoni joined Faf in the middle and had a brief 15-run partnership.

CSK required 65 runs in the last three overs to win the game.

In the 18th over Shimron Hetmyer dropped Faf on 41 but

on the next ball, he was caught behind the stumps by Rishabh Pant.

Kagiso Rabada scalped the crucial wicket for Delhi Cap-itals. Faf scored 43 runs off 35 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja and Dhoni then had a 17-run stand and the duo failed to put their side over the line. Rabada got rid of Dhoni in the last over. Dhoni scored 15 runs.

Jadeja scored 12 before he was picked by Nortje on the last ball of the match. Sam Curran remained unbeaten on 1 run.

For Capitals, Rabada bagged three wickets while Nortje scalped two wickets.

Earlier, Prithvi Shaw and Rishabh Pant played knocks of 64 and 37* respectively as Delhi Capitals posted a total of 175/3.

Put in to bat first, Delhi Cap-itals got off to a good start as openers Prithvi Shaw and Shi-khar Dhawan put on 94 runs for the first wicket. The partner-ship between both batsmen saw Shaw bringing up his half-cen-tury as well.

CSK finally got the break-through in the 11th over as Dha-wan (35) was adjudged leg-be-fore wicket while trying to play a reverse sweep off the bowling of Piyush Chawla.

pion Jarrah Al-Silawi made it a point to be in action at the Kombat Kingdom since signing a new contract with the fast-est-growing MMA organization in the world.

Set on expanding his horizons, ‘’The Jordanian Lion’’ will test the waters at Middleweight when he takes on kickboxer Melvin van Suijdam in the main

event of BRAVE CF 43, the third and last show on the Kombat Kingdom series, set for October 1st.

Widely regarded as the best-ever fighter from the Mid-dle East, Al-Silawi wants to keep active while the likes of Abdoul Abdouraguimov, who

expressed a desire to come down to Super Lightweight, Kevin Ruart and Louis Glisman fight it out for the right to be-come the next Welterweight contender.

With that in mind, he will jump up to Middleweight to face the Dutch kickboxer, who holds a professional MMA re-cord of 11 wins and 5 losses and whose last win came by way of submission, showing his de-velopment as a mixed martial artist.

It will be the perfect test for Al-Silawi, who might even have a score to settle with reigning Middleweight world champi-on Mohammad Fakhreddine.

Two iconic figures of the Mid-dle East MMA scene, ‘’The Jor-danian Lion’’ and ‘’The Lat-est” fought twice before, with Al-Silawi winning the first fight via submission and Fakhred-dine taking the rematch by decision.

BRAVE CF 43 goes down at the Bahrain National Stadium on October 1st and will also fea-ture the return of the biggest prospect in MMA, as Muhammad Mokaev takes on Jamie Kelly in a Bantamweight match-up. Bahrain’s own Hamza Kooheji was able to per-severe through a tough

fight against rising contender Aidan James and got the biggest victory of his career at home during BRAVE CF 42 and is now one of the front runners to be

the next challenger to reigning Bantamweight champion Ste-phen Loman.

Kooheji and Loman have met each other on several occasions, and the two have even fought on BRAVE CF’s first-ever card, held four years ago. Both men were victorious that night, but Kooheji has chosen to develop himself further and work his way between Featherweight and Bantamweight divisions, before settling for a pursuit of the Ban-tamweight title.

Loman is the longest-reigning world champion in his country’s history in MMA. He has been the

BRAVE CF champ since Novem-ber of 2017, and has defended his crown four times, after winning the title in Bahrain, at BRAVE CF 9.

Since then he has fought and won in Northern Ireland, Bah-rain (again), his home country of the Philippines, and India. Stephen has been out of action since November of last year but maybe enticed to come back soon for a big challenge against Kooheji.

After beating Aidan James at BRAVE CF 42, Hamza went to social media to thank the sev-eral messages he received from his fans and said he was sorry he was not being able to keep up with all the shows of sup-port from his countrymen and beyond.
