Standing tall as the proudest female superhero, Wonder Woman is the ultimate package of beauty, brains and brawn. With a few bold strokes of red and blue and a few creative touches of yellow and black, you’ll be nailing the basic essentials of the Wonder Woman staples. Let’s celebrate your womanhood, by following these simple do-it-yourself tips to achieve salon-worthy nail art

Instructions1. Begin by applying a coat of clear

white nail polish to all fingernails. 2. Once your nails dry, apply the

solid base coats. The thumb should be painted red, index blue, middle finger red, ring finger yellow and little finger blue. Wait for them to dry.

3. Using the second smallest brush (size 1), dip it into the blue nail polish to begin working on your thumb. Carefully paint the tip of your thumb nail. Clean the brush using nail polish remover. Take the 0 sized brush, dip it in yellow and

draw several tiny stars on top of your blue tips.

4. Paint one rounded white circle in the centre of your index. Outline the circle with black nai polish and write the word “Pow” inside it.

5. Using brush (size 0), write the letter “W” in the centre of your middle fingernail, using yellow nail polish. Extend the edges of the letter by adding a little wing to it at the end. Make two of these “W’s,” dividing them with blue nail polish.

6. For your ring finger, just draw a

red star using your 0 sized brush.7. On your little finger, already

painted in blue, apply a thick, vertical stripe down the middle of your nail. In the centre of that yellow stripe, draw a small red star using brush (size 0).

8. Repeat on other hand. 9. Once all your nails have been

painted, wait for them to dry. 10. Clean the cuticles of your nails

with a nail polish remover, before applying the final on top.

11. Finally apply a clear varnish on top of all your nails to seal your design.

(red, yellow, blue, black, clear white)

It may not be the most important aspect of your smartphone, but it can bring a pleasant smile on your face. Muzei is an app that brings history’s most beautiful paintings from all over the world and sets them as your smartphone’s wallpaper. This app is pure elegance, from its wonderfully short animated intro to its simple adjustments through settings.

This app, in a way, is a live wallpaper. Although it’s not an animated backdrop, you are able to view the entire image by swiping from side to side on your home screen. The app gives you two options to choose from. You can either stick with the default Featured Art, that sets a new

painting every day as your wallpaper or it will randomly select an image from your gallery.

Once the chosen piece of art is set as your background, there is a slight blur, bringing into focus your phone’s apps and widgets. You can surpass the blur by double tapping your home screen, to view the painting in its true form. You are able to adjust the blur density and dim effect in the app’s settings. Fading in and out, each transition of Muzei is smooth. This app is classy and simply gorgeous. Definitely worth the download.

DesignYes, it’s bulky. And no, it’s not sexy. However, it does feel as if you are holding a point-and-shoot camera in your hand. But that’s what the developers were actually aiming for, and it ultimately is, the main attraction of this phone. Apart from its weight (5.6 ounces) and not so attractive design, the camera never lies flat on its back; the 1020 is sturdy and solid. Which means, you shouldn’t have any problem holding it or stashing it away in your pocket without it falling out.

Three things that give you heart palpitations when drivingDriving on the streets of Dhaka is like being on a roller coaster ride without the safety net. You always have the feeling that something might go wrong. If you aren’t constantly alert and checking all the mirrors at all times, chances are something or the other is going to come and dent your car. To add insult to injury, if someone happened to hit your car, they will end up blaming you for it. Probably stop traffic and start arguing with you for it. It’s not like you have to exchange insurance information or anything, they just like the added benefit of venting their daily frustration on to you. That’s just how it is. Our own brand of driving culture.

There is the disgruntled motorcyclist who thinks he is above the law and will drive through any traffic light in any direction he pleases. Regardless of you standing right in front of him trying to go the opposite direction. If you happen to break your car out of shock, he is the one who will give you a dirty look and try to lecture you about your eyesight. You cannot say anything back because he zooms out of vision as quickly as he came into it.

Then, there is the hapless pedestrian whose only purpose in life is to avoid all the overbridges and walk where he isn’t supposed to. For instance, when the signal is green and it’s your turn to go, he will be strolling in front of you; he may also happen to be right behind your car when you are trying to back up. All this leads to a cacophony of honking horns and swear words.

The best are the buses. They are magical seafarers of Dhaka traffic. They chart out new bus stops where ever they go, leaving a long line of traffic jam behind them. They will engage in random drag racing, over taking cars from the wrong lane, whenever they please. Best of all, they are completely unapologetic for their lack of knowledge about driving rules. If they are tall enough to push the pedal and see over the wheel, then they’re good enough to be sent out to the world to drive.

Why should you check hoses regularly? | Tahsin Momin

The key to driving in hot weather is keeping the engine as cool as possible. We’re going to talk about the radiator and coolant in the next issue, but first you need to check the hoses. The hoses connected to the radiator, help pump coolant to and from the engine block. If the hoses crack, the radiator will quickly overheat, leaving you stranded.

Check hoses for cracks, leaks and loose connections. Hoses should be firm, never soft and malleable. Hoses suffer from a slow deterioration process and that eats away the rubber material from the inside. The most vulnerable parts of the hose, are those nearest to clamps, where the hose connects to the radiator or the engine.

Hopeless ambitionMy daughter has always wanted to study abroad. She was raised in a small town, right outside Dhaka and went to a government school. Always at the top of her class, she even managed to get a scholarship to the US. However, we don’t have enough money to be able to send her there for a four-year programme. Besides, as her mother, I know my daughter and I know that she’ll never be able to adjust there. How do I explain this to her without breaking her heart?

You break it to her gently. It may be more of a fear in you rather than a reality that she will not adjust in the US, a country with a long history of accepting immigrants who managed to find a firm footing, despite their lack of understanding of the language or customs. But your financial concern is a valid one. Instead, can you allow your daughter to study in one of the many good universities in Dhaka? There, she may acclimate to the newly westernised Bengali youth and it might be enough of a change to soften the blow of not going to the US. Another option to consider is deferring her entrance to college in the US and looking into other sources such as the Aga Khan Foundation or AAUW for merit-based scholarships for women. Many such organisations cater specifically to gifted students, lacking in the necessary funds for further education overseas. You owe it to her to try as hard to reward her, as she has worked harder to earn the right to study abroad. I am certain that there are options to consider that will satisfy both you and your daughter.

I am so sorry for your predicament. Often, young men and women agree to an arranged marriage to get their parents off their backs and once married, they feel free to carry on with their sexual inclination. If this seems to be your case too, both of you are victims with you being the innocent partner and him being the parent-pleasing son who had to accept societal norms. Talk to him and do not accuse him while you do so. Although he is not totally innocent in this case, ask him what he would like to do about the situation. If he freely admits to being gay, both of you talk to your parents and the in-laws and peacefully dissolve what should never have happened. By being courageous, you will give him the courage to be himself, eventually helping you start a new life.

The shoe-stopperConsidering how dirty and nasty the streets of Dhaka are, having some kind of doormat is a must. You really want to scrape your shoe-sole against it to keep the muck off your floors. If space permits it, you can have a grand and elaborate arrangement with a shoe-rack next to the doormat. If you’re averse to the idea of a shoe-rack, though, have a smaller strip of doormat on the side for visitors to deposit their “outdoors” shoes.

Hanging outNow that winter’s done, the coats are going back into storage but a hanger (or hanger hooks attached tastefully to a discreet wallboard) still has its uses. From hanging up your umbrella, to stashing your bike helmet, a few hooks can make life much easier.

Side kicksA side-table can keep so much clutter off your dining room table or bed. Car keys can go in its drawers, you can place the newspaper and bills there

Mirror, mirrorHence far, we’ve talked about things you come home to. This last thing is something you need to have before you step out and face the world. Is your hair looking alright? Got lipstick on your teeth? Installing a pretty mirror right above the side-table will allow you to check everything before you leave, and rest assured, all your selfies will come out just grand.

Myth: The pill makes you fatWhile it is true that some women happen to gain weight using the pill, research proves that it isn’t due to the pill alone. Often times, the estrogen in the pill leads to bloating, giving women the idea that they are putting on weight. Typically, bloating subsides and their bodies return to their initial shape. High-dose pills may lead to some women experiencing water retention, but this too can be combated by opting for a pill with lower doses.

Myth: Using pills in the long run is not healthyFor those, who don’t continue taking the pill in the long run, they run higher risks of getting pregnant if they take breaks. Studies prove that women can get pregnant as fast as within three months of getting off the pill.

Nazma Akter came to Dhaka city as a young girl of 11 to work in a garments factory. She, like many others, joined a protest for higher wages where she witnessed firsthand the brutality of her employers. Some years later, she formed her own unions called “Sommilito Garments Sramik Federation” and “Awaj Foundation” which are nonprofit organisations. Both of these organisations seek to improve the working lives of female garment workers of Bangladesh. Her work is mainly based on providing these women with the knowledge of their rights and the bargaining power that comes from knowing them. Avenue T was in conversation with her in honour of Women’s Day, to hear her thoughts on Bangladeshi women; then and now. When did you first feel a gender bias? Or any bias?See I’ve always felt it. What I felt more was the power struggles when I first came to work at a factory. That made more of an impact on me. As a woman you are marginalised, as a woman worker you are further marginalised.

When did you feel you wanted to do something about it?When I was working at the factory, I began to realise that if you internalise suppression, you will be suppressed even further. There is no end to that. What was needed of us was non-cooperation. To stand up for what is my right as a human being.

In terms of unionising women labour, what do you find to be a great challenge?I feel that power struggles exist everywhere. Women need to be more understanding of each other and

cooperate with each other. Instead of letting their ego take over, they need to see the bigger picture and learn to work for the greater good.

Do you feel that women today still internalise patriarchy? Yes they do. From an early age, women are treated differently in the family. There is one set of rules for the boys and another for girls. Men always get the advantage. Things like education, better portions of the food, you name it. This is why, girls from an early age also begin to see themselves differently. They pass that on to their own children. This will not change unless parents begin to see their children as equals. They need to see children as people and not as a boy or a girl.

Why do you think this is still happening? Mainly because of education. A lot of that has to do with this cycle of uneducated mothers and the lack of awareness. This is not just a problem in the villages. This happens through all strata of society. The lack of awareness leaves the parents, especially the mothers, unable to teach

their children things like equality. If that can be changed, then consider how far Bangladesh would go, both economically and socially.

What are the ways in which we can change this pattern?Through government policy. We cannot do this ourselves unless the government implements these policies. Things like women’s security, decent work environment, education and ultimately her empowerment all depend of a policy of equality. A woman isn’t empowered unless she has financial mobility. That gives her the greatest freedom. Even if someone was married to a man who provided for her well, it would be his money that she ultimately depended on. She has no bargaining power in that relationship. She has dependency. So he still gets to make important decisions for her. That leaves her with no independence or solvency.

What are your expectations from this generation of women?That they are truly independent. I see some village girls who come here on their own and they are not afraid to work late hours. They have no constraints like what other people might say if she moved around on her own or came home late. Some very educated young girls today are unable to control their mobility because they are afraid what their families or relatives might say. This external pressure becomes internalised patriarchy. I hope that young woman today can truly be independent. We need new inspiring woman in this society.

Other than the family, what other constraints do young women face?Governmental policy for sure. The lack of regulation affects the way policy is implemented. Even without that, the way our laws are structured creates inequality. We cannot even apply uniformity when it comes to family laws. Everything is separated by religion. Each religion has their own family laws, some are very punishing for women, yet the government feels

no obligation to provide an equal playing field for its citizens. It is vastly divided by gender bias policy. So they are disadvantaged at a social, economic and political level.

Other than the socio-political environment that impede gender equality, are there any other external factors effecting gender bias?Our economic structure has a lot to do with it. Because we follow the capitalist model, our policies are decided by that system. Therefore, the weaker members of society are exploited for profit. In such a system, we cannot expect women’s rights to be instilled.

When multinational companies and large Bangladeshi companies operate here, they seek opportunity. They use the cheapest labour and that is mostly comprised of women. They are treated as nothing but labour. They get no respect or dignity. They don’t get paid

on time. Their basic human rights are denied to them.

In cases of pregnant factory workers, they are not entitled to maternity leave. When that child is born, they don’t get the time or space to feed their children. Things like these amount to a great psychological abuse.

The working environment is another thing that suffers from this capitalist system. There is a lot of sexual and psychological abuse that happen there. Not only that, these buildings they work in, are unsafe like Rana Plaza. I feel if the government brought a class action suit against these people and took a strong stand against these practices, then we could start to see some real changes in the system.

In your opinion, what are the main factors that enable a woman to be emancipated? I believe it is a combination of three things - empowerment, bravery and dedication. One has to be willing to change for change to happen. We need men and women to work together towards a shared goal of equality. Lastly, women need to identify themselves as human first, gender second.

WORkSHOP ON CRIMINAL JuSTICE SYSTEM IN BANGLAdESH HeLD AT DIuThe Faculty of Law of Dhaka International University (DIU) organised a daylong workshop titled “Criminal Justice System in Bangladesh” at Dr MI Patwary auditorium of its Green Road campus on March 1. More than 150 senior students of the department attended the workshop. Barrister Shameem Haider Partwary, Vice-Chairman, Board of Trustees was present as key moderator, while Raisul Islam Sourav, Senior Lecturer & Coordinator of the Department of Law emceed the workshop. At the opening session, Professor Dr Sarkar Ali Akkas, Dean and Chairman, Faculty of Law, Jagannath University presented his paper on Alternative Dispute Resolution in Criminal Cases in Bangladesh. Later Md Haider Ali Khan, Superintendent of Police of Special Protection Battalion, gave his speech on police administration in Bangladesh. Then Saiful Islam Saif, Lecturer of the department conducted his session on Structure and Jurisdiction of Criminal Courts in Bangladesh. In the second segment of the workshop, Advocate Ehsanul Hoque Shomaji answered different questions on Criminal Investigation in Bangladesh. In the concluding session, Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman, Metropolitan Additional Sessions Judge, presented a paper as resource person on Trial of Criminal Cases in Bangladesh. At the end, Barrister Shameem Haider Patwary expressed his gratefulness to the resource personnel and the participants. Finally he awarded certificates to students.

Photoffee, the first fine-art photography based organisation in Bangladesh, held its third competition. On February 28, the Photoffee Photographer of the Year award was given to Munem Wasif at a ceremony in Dhaka Art Center Auditorium, Dhandmondi. Distinguished photographers Anwar Hossain and Nasir Ali Mamun inaugurated the event, Moinul Ahsan Saber, writer and editor, well known photojournalist Abir Abdullah, jury chair were present as special guests of the event. The winner received Tk10,000 cash, a trophy and a framed certificate.

The official launch of BRAC University’s English Campaign took place on February 25 at their idyllic Savar campus. For the inauguration ceremony, the campus was dressed in colourful, motivational and educational banners and posters for the inauguration. The campaign aimed at empowering students to compete globally by excelling in English. The event was host to a number of distinguished guests, including BRAC University vice chancellor Professor Ainun Nishat, pro-vice chancellor Professor Fuad Hassan Mallick and Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, Director of BRAC Institute of Languages along with representatives from the press. Not only did they talk about the importance of English, they also focused on the proper use of Bangla, to ensure our valuable traditions and heritage are not lost. The immense effort that went into organising the launch benefitted greatly from student ‘English Champions’, who entered wholeheartedly in the spirit of the Campaign that involved an exciting blend of activities. A day long Spelling Bee competition, poetry recitals and a song performance about Savar campus preceded an hour of fun filled English games (including Charades, Pictionary, and Hangman), designed to advance students’ English proficiency. The university faculty members, BRAC University alumni and members of the Student English Committee made the long journey from Dhaka to give the event a participatory feel that the English Campaign aimed to inspire.
