Nailing Wonder Woman | N Anita AmreenWith Women’s Day merely two days away, what better way to parade your pride than displaying a set of powerful Wonder Woman talons? Standing tall as the proudest female superhero, Wonder Woman is the ultimate package of beauty, brains and brawn. With a few bold strokes of red and blue and a few creative touches of yellow and black, you’ll be nailing the basic essentials of the Wonder Woman staples. Let’s celebrate your womanhood, by following these simple do-it-yourself tips to achieve salon-worthy nail art

diy

Instructions1. Begin by applying a coat of clear

white nail polish to all fingernails. 2. Once your nails dry, apply the

solid base coats. The thumb should be painted red, index blue, middle finger red, ring finger yellow and little finger blue. Wait for them to dry.

3. Using the second smallest brush (size 1), dip it into the blue nail polish to begin working on your thumb. Carefully paint the tip of your thumb nail. Clean the brush using nail polish remover. Take the 0 sized brush, dip it in yellow and

draw several tiny stars on top of your blue tips.

4. Paint one rounded white circle in the centre of your index. Outline the circle with black nai polish and write the word “Pow” inside it.

5. Using brush (size 0), write the letter “W” in the centre of your middle fingernail, using yellow nail polish. Extend the edges of the letter by adding a little wing to it at the end. Make two of these “W’s,” dividing them with blue nail polish.

6. For your ring finger, just draw a

red star using your 0 sized brush.7. On your little finger, already

painted in blue, apply a thick, vertical stripe down the middle of your nail. In the centre of that yellow stripe, draw a small red star using brush (size 0).

8. Repeat on other hand. 9. Once all your nails have been

painted, wait for them to dry. 10. Clean the cuticles of your nails

with a nail polish remover, before applying the final on top.

11. Finally apply a clear varnish on top of all your nails to seal your design.

You’ll need• Nail polish

(red, yellow, blue, black, clear white)

• Regular painting brush, size 0• Regular painting brush, size 1• Nail polish remover

Higher end brands such as NARS, Maybelline, Revlon and L’Oreal ( Tk200 and up each) work best, however, you may also use cheaper alternatives such as VOV and Jackelin (Tk50 and Tk180 per bottle). All available at Priyo General Store and Almas Super Store as well as the cosmetic stores at Bashundhara City.

Simple web tricks | Mahmood HossainWe spend plenty of time browsing the Internet on our desktops, tablets and smartphones. While browsing through our mobile devices is as easy as a simple touch and swipe, our experience on our laptops and desktops can be made easier. Here are a number of tips to make your Internet surfing experience a lot easier

It may not be the most important aspect of your smartphone, but it can bring a pleasant smile on your face. Muzei is an app that brings history’s most beautiful paintings from all over the world and sets them as your smartphone’s wallpaper. This app is pure elegance, from its wonderfully short animated intro to its simple adjustments through settings.

This app, in a way, is a live wallpaper. Although it’s not an animated backdrop, you are able to view the entire image by swiping from side to side on your home screen. The app gives you two options to choose from. You can either stick with the default Featured Art, that sets a new

painting every day as your wallpaper or it will randomly select an image from your gallery.

Once the chosen piece of art is set as your background, there is a slight blur, bringing into focus your phone’s apps and widgets. You can surpass the blur by double tapping your home screen, to view the painting in its true form. You are able to adjust the blur density and dim effect in the app’s settings. Fading in and out, each transition of Muzei is smooth. This app is classy and simply gorgeous. Definitely worth the download.

Muzei is free to download on Android devices through the Play Store.

DesignYes, it’s bulky. And no, it’s not sexy. However, it does feel as if you are holding a point-and-shoot camera in your hand. But that’s what the developers were actually aiming for, and it ultimately is, the main attraction of this phone. Apart from its weight (5.6 ounces) and not so attractive design, the camera never lies flat on its back; the 1020 is sturdy and solid. Which means, you shouldn’t have any problem holding it or stashing it away in your pocket without it falling out.

FeaturesNot every photo will be perfect, but there are certain shots from the 1020 that will leave you mesmerised because an actual digital camera

would not be able to do the job any better. Its Pro Cam app and native apps boost the experience with fantastic focus. Taking shots from the main subject to the clusters in the background through the lens are impressive.

From fashion bloggers to amateur photographers, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is a tempting buy. We’re seeing more and more emphasis on cameras and other features for smartphones. Well, the 1020 can pretty much be summed up in a few words. This is possibly the truest definition of a camera phone. Its 41-megapixel lens sticks out like a sore thumb, which will have mobile photographers drooling for more

The Mazda RX-8 is one of the finest sports cars and occupies a distinct place due to its unique design and style. It is a four seater with lavish interior, crafted in a perfect design and performs excellently well. The Mazda RX-8 has a unique rotary engine that makes it stand out.

ExteriorOn the outside, it is very graceful and stylish. The sporty yet aggressive look depicts its power. The front end is designed in harmony with the aerodynamics at high speed, keeping the car planted on the ground while dancing through the air. The sides of this stunning car have stylishly flanged wheel arches and the 18-inch alloy wheels add a racier look to this magnificent car. The Mazda RX-8 is a four door, four passenger car with front and rear doors opening in opposite directions, making it an entirely different car from its rivals.

InteriorMazda RX-8 has a leather coated three spoke steering wheel with a sporty instrument panel. The interior is entirely made of high quality plastic to keep the car light. The dash and the centre stack are elegantly designed. The passenger cabin is very comfortable and spacious. The seats are very lavish and offer a perfect seating experience. That’s not all. Driving woes | Esha Aurora

Three things that give you heart palpitations when drivingDriving on the streets of Dhaka is like being on a roller coaster ride without the safety net. You always have the feeling that something might go wrong. If you aren’t constantly alert and checking all the mirrors at all times, chances are something or the other is going to come and dent your car. To add insult to injury, if someone happened to hit your car, they will end up blaming you for it. Probably stop traffic and start arguing with you for it. It’s not like you have to exchange insurance information or anything, they just like the added benefit of venting their daily frustration on to you. That’s just how it is. Our own brand of driving culture.

There is the disgruntled motorcyclist who thinks he is above the law and will drive through any traffic light in any direction he pleases. Regardless of you standing right in front of him trying to go the opposite direction. If you happen to break your car out of shock, he is the one who will give you a dirty look and try to lecture you about your eyesight. You cannot say anything back because he zooms out of vision as quickly as he came into it.

Then, there is the hapless pedestrian whose only purpose in life is to avoid all the overbridges and walk where he isn’t supposed to. For instance, when the signal is green and it’s your turn to go, he will be strolling in front of you; he may also happen to be right behind your car when you are trying to back up. All this leads to a cacophony of honking horns and swear words.

The best are the buses. They are magical seafarers of Dhaka traffic. They chart out new bus stops where ever they go, leaving a long line of traffic jam behind them. They will engage in random drag racing, over taking cars from the wrong lane, whenever they please. Best of all, they are completely unapologetic for their lack of knowledge about driving rules. If they are tall enough to push the pedal and see over the wheel, then they’re good enough to be sent out to the world to drive.

Why should you check hoses regularly? | Tahsin Momin

The key to driving in hot weather is keeping the engine as cool as possible. We’re going to talk about the radiator and coolant in the next issue, but first you need to check the hoses. The hoses connected to the radiator, help pump coolant to and from the engine block. If the hoses crack, the radiator will quickly overheat, leaving you stranded.

Check hoses for cracks, leaks and loose connections. Hoses should be firm, never soft and malleable. Hoses suffer from a slow deterioration process and that eats away the rubber material from the inside. The most vulnerable parts of the hose, are those nearest to clamps, where the hose connects to the radiator or the engine.

rotary engine is extremely smooth and simply called Renesis by Mazda. It is smaller in size compared to an inline four-cylinder and thus light weight. Still this engine gives Mazda RX-8 an excellent performance of 232Hp and accelerates from 0-100kmph in six seconds, making it a priority choice in its class. The transmission in the RX-8 comes in both automatic and manual.

Safety To ensure a well-rounded safety, the Mazda RX-8 comes with dual front air bags and front seat-mounted side-impact air bags. The safety bangs don’t

end there; it also has side-impact air curtains with coverage for both front and rear seats, and three-point seat belts make sure that the passengers avoid the maximum injury in case of an accident. It also has an antitheft alarm system with engine immobiliser and tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS).

The Mazda RX-8 is one stunning car. It has got power, style, performance, technology, space and the safety features. The interior is splendid, the exterior is gorgeous. It has everything that a hot piece of machine needs.

Hopeless ambitionMy daughter has always wanted to study abroad. She was raised in a small town, right outside Dhaka and went to a government school. Always at the top of her class, she even managed to get a scholarship to the US. However, we don’t have enough money to be able to send her there for a four-year programme. Besides, as her mother, I know my daughter and I know that she’ll never be able to adjust there. How do I explain this to her without breaking her heart?

You break it to her gently. It may be more of a fear in you rather than a reality that she will not adjust in the US, a country with a long history of accepting immigrants who managed to find a firm footing, despite their lack of understanding of the language or customs. But your financial concern is a valid one. Instead, can you allow your daughter to study in one of the many good universities in Dhaka? There, she may acclimate to the newly westernised Bengali youth and it might be enough of a change to soften the blow of not going to the US. Another option to consider is deferring her entrance to college in the US and looking into other sources such as the Aga Khan Foundation or AAUW for merit-based scholarships for women. Many such organisations cater specifically to gifted students, lacking in the necessary funds for further education overseas. You owe it to her to try as hard to reward her, as she has worked harder to earn the right to study abroad. I am certain that there are options to consider that will satisfy both you and your daughter.

AI believe she always really liked you but she felt committed to the other man. When she got the courage to trust her feelings for you, she finally left the other man. I understand your ego has been bruised. But there should be no ego involved. “A” struggled for a long time to make up her mind, why punish her? More importantly, why punish yourself when you really love her and are finally with the woman you love? Aren’t you trying to cut off the nose to spite the face? Love yourself for having waited for her, love her for having chosen you and for listening to her heart: she loves YOU! That is all that matters.

I met A three years ago and we formed a quick, special friendship. Although she was in a relationship, I instantly fell in love with her and I knew regardless of what she said, she had feelings for me too. It came to a point where she cheated on her boyfriend and spent time with me, without his knowledge, of course. However, every time she would suddenly stop talking to me and then go back to being with her man. She did this on and off, every time I was there waiting for her. For the past year, we had no contact; she completely cut me off from her life. Two months ago, she broke it off with her man and came to me. I’m confused about how I feel, although, I do know I feel like a rebound. I care about her and am talking to her. We’re even intimate but I’ve told her I don’t want to hurt her. I don’t want to be in a relationship with her. It took me a year to get over the pain and hurt, I don’t want to be in that place again. But I know being with me makes her happy and that makes ME happy. I’m so lost, please tell me what to do.

LibrA (Sep 23-Oct 22)It would be fair to call this week “play time” for you as you’ll be taking up lots of fun endeavours. Whether it’s making a short visit out of town or just going for a solitary walk, you’ll be basking in joy. sCorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21)A seemingly unresolvable emotional issue will plague you this week, slowing you down. You may be put off at first, but if you follow through, you will begin to immensely enjoy yourself. CApriCorn (Dec 22-Jan 19)Most times you don’t mind if people turn to you for help, however, this week you may find this very annoying. Tired of always playing the role of the “friend indeed,” you’ll want to act out of character just for the heck of it. AquArius (Jan 20-Feb 19)Your rampant mood swings will frustrate loved ones. You’ll be itching for change and may end up choosing paths that are not the most logical ones for you. pisCes (Feb 20-Mar 20)For you, the grass forever seems greener on the other side. Even as you accomplish many things that you’ve been longing for, the fact that you don’t have more, will upset you this week.

When the caregiver becomes the breadwinner

One most common reailty prevalent in our society is gender bias norm, where since birth, girls are treated differently than boys. While sons always get the fairer share of things, such as education, food, clothes and so on, the daughters are married off and the sole purpose of their life becomes taking care of the in-laws, running errands and doing the household chores. But what if she wanted to be more than just a baby-making, caregiving machine?

mAyBe our SoCIeTy IS yeT To GeT uSed To workInG women, let alone the fact that in some cases, women make as much as men do, if not more. Most men, to all intents and purposes, many men may feel that there is no need for their female counterpart to outdo them, financially or in any other way. While most men might have insecurities when their wife makes a better living, here’s why they should not be afraid to accept new ideas no matter how orthodox others say they are.

Cool your jeTS, GenTlemen, it’s not a competition, and it’s not wives against husbands; it’s about both partners in a family, working together to make their lives and that of their children better.

Equality is not about bringing someone else down, it is about lifting everyone else up. Before raising your brows and cringing your teeth at the thought of your wife outearning you, sleep on it gentlemen.

Married to the wrong manAs a young girl hailing from a conservative family, I had an arranged marriage against my wishes. My husband comes from a well-off family and we met a few times before getting married. It has been eight months now and my husband hasn’t even come close to me. I don’t understand the problem, but I do suspect something’s wrong. I sometimes feel that he might not be interested in women at all. I don’t even know how to talk to him about this. Sometimes, I’ve tried to get close but he always has an excuse. How should I approach my husband with this problem?

I am so sorry for your predicament. Often, young men and women agree to an arranged marriage to get their parents off their backs and once married, they feel free to carry on with their sexual inclination. If this seems to be your case too, both of you are victims with you being the innocent partner and him being the parent-pleasing son who had to accept societal norms. Talk to him and do not accuse him while you do so. Although he is not totally innocent in this case, ask him what he would like to do about the situation. If he freely admits to being gay, both of you talk to your parents and the in-laws and peacefully dissolve what should never have happened. By being courageous, you will give him the courage to be himself, eventually helping you start a new life.

A grand entranceThe entryway is the first thing an outsider sees of your home. This is where you regulate who or what comes into your space and how grand and welcoming you can make it. If you can play your cards right, you can reduce the amount of clutter brought into the rest of your home. Apartment therapist Maxwell Ryan talks about five “ingredients” for a “landing strip” that requires relatively little time, space or money to create

8 Tucked In

The shoe-stopperConsidering how dirty and nasty the streets of Dhaka are, having some kind of doormat is a must. You really want to scrape your shoe-sole against it to keep the muck off your floors. If space permits it, you can have a grand and elaborate arrangement with a shoe-rack next to the doormat. If you’re averse to the idea of a shoe-rack, though, have a smaller strip of doormat on the side for visitors to deposit their “outdoors” shoes.

Hanging outNow that winter’s done, the coats are going back into storage but a hanger (or hanger hooks attached tastefully to a discreet wallboard) still has its uses. From hanging up your umbrella, to stashing your bike helmet, a few hooks can make life much easier.

Side kicksA side-table can keep so much clutter off your dining room table or bed. Car keys can go in its drawers, you can place the newspaper and bills there

when they come in. Guests coming in with big bouquets or buckets of mishti? Let them place it on your side-table to free up their arms for that welcome hug.

Waste, begoneIf you’re coming in after that impromptu ice cream date, you’ll want somewhere to toss the napkins. Ditto for an impulse shopping trip that has resulted in more invoices that you want to think about. Leave your worries at the door by dumping them into the crafty wicker basket stashed discreetly under the side-table.

Mirror, mirrorHence far, we’ve talked about things you come home to. This last thing is something you need to have before you step out and face the world. Is your hair looking alright? Got lipstick on your teeth? Installing a pretty mirror right above the side-table will allow you to check everything before you leave, and rest assured, all your selfies will come out just grand.

Myth: The pill makes you fatWhile it is true that some women happen to gain weight using the pill, research proves that it isn’t due to the pill alone. Often times, the estrogen in the pill leads to bloating, giving women the idea that they are putting on weight. Typically, bloating subsides and their bodies return to their initial shape. High-dose pills may lead to some women experiencing water retention, but this too can be combated by opting for a pill with lower doses.

Myth: Using pills in the long run is not healthyFor those, who don’t continue taking the pill in the long run, they run higher risks of getting pregnant if they take breaks. Studies prove that women can get pregnant as fast as within three months of getting off the pill.

Myth: Going on the pill is unsafe and may lead to birth defectsWith over 100 million women going on the pill, research has proved that the pill is one of the most safest contraception. While it does have its share of side effects, as is the case with any other medication, the pill does not have any major repercussion. The pill helps reduce PMS and regulate menstrual cycles.

Myth: It leads to cancerResearch has proved that going on the pill provides protection against certain types of cancer. Women on the pill are one-third less likely to get uterine or ovarian cancer than women not on the pill. Experts may even advise women to use the pill for a minimum of five years to protect them from ovarian cancer.

These days women have several options when it comes to contraception. Be it contraceptive patches, diaphragms or the pill, woman have the power to decide on their individual choice of contraception. Although the pill is the most popular form of contraception, several women cringe away at the idea of taking pills, thanks to the constant mixed messages doing rounds in rumour mills. Some women swear that it makes them put on weight, while others claim that it increases the risk of cancer. This week Avenue T takes a look at the most common misconceptions, breaking the myths that make women lose confidence in the pills’ effectiveness.

wheat and oats with high fibre content.

• Beans and lentils. When you sprout the beans, their nutrient value increases significantly.

• Nuts and seeds such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, flaxseeds, etc.

• Good fats such as olive oil, flaxseed oil, mustard oil, grape seed oil, etc.

• Natural sugars such organic honey, maple syrup, date syrup, etc. can be used in moderation in

desserts and drinks.• Water! Drink six to eight glasses

of water every day to keep your body hydrated and cleansed.

Foods to avoid• Processed foods, white sugar,

saturated fats, hydrogenated oils (trans fats), excessive use of salt and other high sodium spices.

• Alcohol must be avoided as it has an adverse effect on the central nervous system. It reduces one’s alertness and awareness. It can also lead to addiction or depression.

• Coffee and tea. If they cannot be avoided completely, they should definitely be consumed in moderation.

Healthy food habits• Cook and eat with awareness.• Be grateful for your food.• Be grateful to the person who

prepared your food (even when that person is you).

• Don’t be extremely rigid about your diet. This leads to deprivation.

• Don’t always eat in a hurry. Allow enough time for eating meals in your schedule and take the time to thoroughly chew and enjoy every bite!

• Don’t expect the food to taste “sinfully” delicious every time. Learn to enjoy the natural taste of foods that are not submerged in condiments and sauces.

• In a nutshell, rather than living to eat, eat to live!

Nazma Akter came to Dhaka city as a young girl of 11 to work in a garments factory. She, like many others, joined a protest for higher wages where she witnessed firsthand the brutality of her employers. Some years later, she formed her own unions called “Sommilito Garments Sramik Federation” and “Awaj Foundation” which are nonprofit organisations. Both of these organisations seek to improve the working lives of female garment workers of Bangladesh. Her work is mainly based on providing these women with the knowledge of their rights and the bargaining power that comes from knowing them. Avenue T was in conversation with her in honour of Women’s Day, to hear her thoughts on Bangladeshi women; then and now. This awe-inspiring woman had many powerful things to say about the status quo of women in society and the base discrimination that permeates it. ““When you gain the right to be voted into power, you must also recognise the human rights of the person who has given you that power. There must be a mutual respect between the two.

When did you first feel a gender bias? Or any bias?See I’ve always felt it. What I felt more was the power struggles when I first came to work at a factory. That made more of an impact on me. As a woman you are marginalised, as a woman worker you are further marginalised.

When did you feel you wanted to do something about it?When I was working at the factory, I began to realise that if you internalise suppression, you will be suppressed even further. There is no end to that. What was needed of us was non-cooperation. To stand up for what is my right as a human being.

In terms of unionising women labour, what do you find to be a great challenge?I feel that power struggles exist everywhere. Women need to be more understanding of each other and

cooperate with each other. Instead of letting their ego take over, they need to see the bigger picture and learn to work for the greater good.

Do you feel that women today still internalise patriarchy? Yes they do. From an early age, women are treated differently in the family. There is one set of rules for the boys and another for girls. Men always get the advantage. Things like education, better portions of the food, you name it. This is why, girls from an early age also begin to see themselves differently. They pass that on to their own children. This will not change unless parents begin to see their children as equals. They need to see children as people and not as a boy or a girl.

Why do you think this is still happening? Mainly because of education. A lot of that has to do with this cycle of uneducated mothers and the lack of awareness. This is not just a problem in the villages. This happens through all strata of society. The lack of awareness leaves the parents, especially the mothers, unable to teach

their children things like equality. If that can be changed, then consider how far Bangladesh would go, both economically and socially.

What are the ways in which we can change this pattern?Through government policy. We cannot do this ourselves unless the government implements these policies. Things like women’s security, decent work environment, education and ultimately her empowerment all depend of a policy of equality. A woman isn’t empowered unless she has financial mobility. That gives her the greatest freedom. Even if someone was married to a man who provided for her well, it would be his money that she ultimately depended on. She has no bargaining power in that relationship. She has dependency. So he still gets to make important decisions for her. That leaves her with no independence or solvency.

What are your expectations from this generation of women? That they are truly independent. I see some village girls who come here on their own and they are not afraid to work late hours. They have no constraints like what other people might say if she moved around on her own or came home late. Some very educated young girls today are unable to control their mobility because they are afraid what their families or relatives might say. This external pressure becomes internalised patriarchy. I hope that young woman today can truly be independent. We need new inspiring woman in this society.

Other than the family, what other constraints do young women face?Governmental policy for sure. The lack of regulation affects the way policy is implemented. Even without that, the way our laws are structured creates inequality. We cannot even apply uniformity when it comes to family laws. Everything is separated by religion. Each religion has their own family laws, some are very punishing for women, yet the government feels

no obligation to provide an equal playing field for its citizens. It is vastly divided by gender bias policy. So they are disadvantaged at a social, economic and political level.

Other than the socio-political environment that impede gender equality, are there any other external factors effecting gender bias? Our economic structure has a lot to do with it. Because we follow the capitalist model, our policies are decided by that system. Therefore, the weaker members of society are exploited for profit. In such a system, we cannot expect women’s rights to be instilled.

When multinational companies and large Bangladeshi companies operate here, they seek opportunity. They use the cheapest labour and that is mostly comprised of women. They are treated as nothing but labour. They get no respect or dignity. They don’t get paid

on time. Their basic human rights are denied to them.

In cases of pregnant factory workers, they are not entitled to maternity leave. When that child is born, they don’t get the time or space to feed their children. Things like these amount to a great psychological abuse.

The working environment is another thing that suffers from this capitalist system. There is a lot of sexual and psychological abuse that happen there. Not only that, these buildings they work in, are unsafe like Rana Plaza. I feel if the government brought a class action suit against these people and took a strong stand against these practices, then we could start to see some real changes in the system.

In your opinion, what are the main factors that enable a woman to be emancipated? I believe it is a combination of three things - empowerment, bravery and dedication. One has to be willing to change for change to happen. We need men and women to work together towards a shared goal of equality. Lastly, women need to identify themselves as human first, gender second.

Women need to identify themselves as human first, gender second

Feminist does not equal to slob

Maya Almuqtadir is the designer and owner of Mayali and a practitioner of fusing international and local trends

Feminism and fashion have long been considered as antagonists, glaring at each other from across the room. But it doesn’t have to be that way

Feminism does not mean being stereotyped as a hairy, baggy t-shirt wearing man-hater but someone who stands up for the equal rights of women and does it in style. Here are some quick and effortless tricks to staying fabulously feminist.

Get nerd happySteal a pair of old glasses from a grandparent or if you have the resources, pick up a pair of vintage, winged out pair of peepers and don them with confidence.

Earth happyIf you love natural fabrics, check out your nearest fabric shops such as Aranya, that specialise in natural dyes. You can make super cute fotuas and kameezes out of them. Have them tailored in an updated fashion so you don’t look sloppy.

Embrace cruelty free and natural productsCruelty free products mean, they have not been tested on animals and natural products are chemical free so it is feminist friendly.

Wear that short skirt and get dolled up if that’s what you feel like. How you feel about women’s issues have absolutely nothing to do with the way you look

We’ve bid our farewells to the chilling winter so let’s focus on transitioning into spring trends. You’ve noticed the cool winds during this period of time, especially when things are in motion. If you’ve ever found yourself idle, the warmth of the hotter days creep in. That’s the best part of spring, you may tend to perspire but won’t sweat out completely. Here’s where the star of this period of time shines. Layers peel off one by one, and the sweater makes more of an appearance.

The wonderful thing about a sweater is that it’s easy to style and you’ll have no issues rolling up the sleeves. The fabric is light and possesses the right amount of threads to shield you from the rushing winds. It’s almost as if you’re wearing a knitted rugby shirt. A quality sweater can easily be worn as the second layer to your outfit. Remember to keep things light underneath – stick to only an undershirt. Whether it’s solid or striped, the fitting of the sweater should hug your body. Too tight is unattractive and it borders the lines

Something so shiny and expensive matched up with your three-piece suit may not always be a hit. At times, people might question your coordinating abilities. More often than not, men have committed the crime of wearing a certain coloured suit paired up with the wrong coloured shoes. This happens to be one of the basics in men’s fashion that plenty of you tend to overlook. For those of you who might want to play it safe or those of you who have no clue how to put one and one together, this little guide will come in handy.

nAvy Blue SuITS with black, brown and burgundy or oxblood shoes.

My wife always insists that I tag along with her, whenever she visits the nail bar to get her nails

done. She thinks I too, should be getting mine done with hers. Isn’t that a little emasculating?

Q

Traditionally, men wouldn’t want to be found anywhere near a nail salon. But nowadays, it has become

universally accepted for men to regularly schedule manicures and pedicures. The truth is men have been doing this for ages; literally, for centuries. This was part of an elite society, who were always well-groomed and sported the most sophisticated looks. Prim and proper were for the gentlemen who actually had resources and status. You can get your hands dirty all you want, but it won’t make you more of a man. Getting a manicure doesn’t make you less of a man either, so feel free to spend more time with the wife at the nail salon.

A

I’ve noticed that some colognes smell similar to some perfumes. How do you choose a scent that doesn’t

make you smell like a woman?

QYou have to understand one very simple concept. Fragrances by popular labels are all about branding. The only thing

that sets the women’s fragrances and men’s colognes apart is the visual treatment the bottles receive. Truth be told, there is no such thing as a woman’s or a man’s scent. Something soft is synonymous with a woman’s fragrance. Why? Just because she is the fairer sex, we assume something softer or sultry is her signature scent. The wonderful thing is, there are countless colognes out there for you to choose from. Don’t worry about smelling like a woman, wear what smells good on you and suits your style..

of sweat dripping down your face.

Depending on the design, it’s easy to pair a sweater with jeans or casual trousers. No reason to look uptight, just roll up your sleeves, put on your favourite pair of shoes, and rock that strut. Spring’s here, it’s time to liven things up, gentlemen.

Remember the contrasting styles when pairing up shoes to suits. For example, lighter grey suits go best with darker shades of brown shoes. On the contrary, darker grey suits set very well with lighter shades of brown. These are the most common coloured suits men will wear. We’ll save the windowpanes and the pinstripes for another day.

Short hair is often deemed as a feminist statement. What are some tips to rock a short do while still

appearing feminine?

QThere are so many ways to rock short hair that I often wonder why more women don’t chop off their long

locks. There are numerous ways to look feminine while sporting a short hairdo. Adding a headband can take you from bleak to chic in seconds. Depending on the style of the headpiece, you can add a vintage, glamorous or even bohemian flair to your look.

Whether you’re sporting a pixie or a bob, volume never hurts. Take Miley Cyrus for example. Her drastic cut was ground-breaking, gorgeous and is always voluminous.Volume can really change a simple bob into something more glamorous. So don’t be too shy to tease like it’s 1965.

Texture adds character to a short cut. For a more feminine alternative to flat ironing or blow-drying, I’d recommend trying out a finger wave. This look is classic, timeless and works for virtually any hair length. Lastly, make-up isn’t a must for complementing a short haircut, but it certainly is a plus. Your natural beauty can be amplified by beauty products. Line your eyes with black eyeliner, apply tons of mascara for a twiggy inspired look and pair it with bright red or nude lips and strut out of the house, looking as pretty as a picture.

A

Laying on the foundationA common mistake dusky beauties make is buying the wrong shade of foundation. Most ladies from this side of the world have yellow skin undertones and need to look for a product for that particular tone. Some popular brands still formulate darker shades of foundation with pink undertones and the result is grey toned skin. Nobody wants that. Pick wisely and always test shades on your face instead of your hands.

Colour me beautifulDon’t be afraid to experiment with bright colours. Whether it’s make-up or clothing, the idea that bright shades don’t work on dark skin is a myth. It’s actually easier to pull off vibrant eye shadows and lipsticks without appearing garish.

Protect meWhoever told you protection against the sun was unnecessary for women with dark skin was dead wrong. Women of all colours are susceptible to environmental skin damages, so layer the protection on.

Bronze, bronze, bronzeBronzers were made for darker skin tones. They blend in perfectly and give off the illusion of a flawless face. If you want a bit of shimmer, always pick bronzing products with golden flecks as opposed to silver. Golden tones are always more flattering on tan skin.

Dark and lovely | Sabah RahmanIt’s time to throw out those whitening products and make the most of the skin your mama gave you. Although this part of the world may never be on par with how the Western world is enamoured by bronze goddesses, take a cue from Halle Berry’s caramel skin or Paula Patton’s sun-kissed complexion. Here are Avenue T’s tips on how to strut your golden skin

Bangladesh is a gold mine when it comes to tourism. Not saying that we have the systems in place or that it is even remotely developed yet, at least not according to the West it isn’t. But what we do have, are places to admire and marvel at. Speaking of development in tourism and Bangladesh not showing any signs of it, Tiger Tours, a joint venture fair trade tourism company, is a pioneer when it comes to active people sending out tourists into the unexplored country side along the mighty rivers hallowed by the South West Silk Road to China in ancient times to show them the sights, sounds and artistic calibre of Bangladesh, all done in

comfort and style. There you have it, a signature stand opposing terms like #poortourism or #poorism that Bangladesh is supposedly entitled to.

With that in mind, this week, Avenue T brings you MV Tangaur Haor, a boat that not only screams luxury but success – success in bringing this country a vessel that swims ashore to cultures and monuments in a way never seen before. So next time, when you’re thinking of taking a trip to Thailand for a boat cruise, think again, because you can not only find a better alternative at home but you can also have the opportunity to see sides of this beautiful piece of land that you have never seen before.

The Killer Nachos Tk300

The nachos arrive in a deceiving platter as the star ingredient (the beef chilli con carne) is hidden behind a layer of tortillas. It’s best to dive directly into the depths of this dish, topping your tortilla with a good dose of meat sauce. The perfect flavours of the meat sauce, the crunch of the tortilla and the salty tang of cheese, create an addictive mix. Slightly on the spicier end, their nachos really beat their competitors, hands down; it is one of the best dishes at The Cart Company.

The Fatso Tk290

This behemoth-sized wrap, over flowing off the plate, may require some planning before you begin your gorging session. A soft parata encases tender chunks of beef or chicken, crispy julienne potatoes and a myriad of sauces which range from peppery to deliciously spicy. It will definitely leave you satiated and addicted.

Hebby Joss Burger Tk180, toppings range from Tk40 to Tk60

The express version of Jamuna Future Park favourite is just as good as the original. Order the Hebby Joss Burger if you’re a purist and bite into pure bliss. Nestled between a pair of soft buns, the beef patty is so tender that it melts right in your mouth. The second pleasant surprise about this burger is the spicy tang, thanks to their special sauce. You can also choose from an array of toppings like mushrooms and Dhaka ponir and even add on as many extra patties as you like.

Kala bhuna Tk180Aloo paratha Tk50

A puran Dhaka delicacy, the kala bhuna is a must-have for those who enjoy rich

indulgences. It’s extremely spicy, filled with masala and it tastes so good, it’s worth the heart attack you are sure to get with one too many helpings. Try this with their aloo paratha, another guilty indulgence that comes in the form of a thick, deep fried dough with a thick layer of well spiced aloo.

Holy Crepe Tk400

The hot goodness of nuttella, the creamy crunch of peanut butter and the tang of strawberries and bananas – need one say more? It’s difficult to go wrong with such a potent mix of fillings, especially when it’s topped with hot chocolate sauce and a side helping of whipped cream. Given it comes with a Tk400 price tag, it’s totally well worth a sweet try.

Fresh juice (Kalo jaam Tk120, Tetul Tk100 and Jolpai Tk160)

Their selection of fresh juices are absolutely potent concoctions. Whether it’s the subtle overtones of the kalo jaam, the delicious tang of the tetul or the thick consistency of the jolpai - The Cart Company have nailed their juices and nailed them good. Definite must-haves!

Nasi Goreng Tk160

Meant to be inspired by Malaysia’s staple noodle dish, this slightly Bangali take on the Nasi Goreng is just that: a Bangali take on Nasi Goreng. Considered to be one of their best-sellers, both the Nasi Goreng and the Drunken noodles are good meals to try if you’re prioritising affordability and large portions over taste. All prices are exclusive of 15% VAT so it’s best you don’t get carried away with over ordering, a crime most of us are guilty of, thanks to their well-rounded dishes.

I think the Drunken noodles is overrated. It lacks something that you can’t really put a finger on. Shama Islam, 26, Dhaka

The official launch of BRAC University’s English Campaign took place on February 25 at their idyllic Savar campus. For the inauguration ceremony, the campus was dressed in colourful, motivational and educational banners and posters for the inauguration. The campaign aimed at empowering students to compete globally by excelling in English. The event was host to a number of distinguished guests, including BRAC University vice chancellor Professor Ainun Nishat, pro-vice chancellor Professor Fuad Hassan Mallick and Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, Director of BRAC Institute of Languages along with representatives from the press. Not only did they talk about the importance of English, they also focused on the proper use of Bangla, to ensure our valuable traditions and heritage are not lost. The immense effort that went into organising the launch benefitted greatly from student ‘English Champions’, who entered wholeheartedly in the spirit of the Campaign that involved an exciting blend of activities. A day long Spelling Bee competition, poetry recitals and a song performance about Savar campus preceded an hour of fun filled English games (including Charades, Pictionary, and Hangman), designed to advance students’ English proficiency. The university faculty members, BRAC University alumni and members of the Student English Committee made the long journey from Dhaka to give the event a participatory feel that the English Campaign aimed to inspire.
