This schedule of features is subject to change as more input of required funconality from the community helps to shape Avalon. Avalon will be deployable in a wide variety of arrangements, operang in conjuncon with exisng integrated library systems, repositories, lecture capture systems, streaming servers, and other video environments, or in a standalone configuraon. The Avalon Media System is a robust, fully open source soluon for curang and providing online access to digital audio and video collecons in libraries and archives. The system is being developed collaboravely by the libraries at Indiana University and Northwestern University, in partnership with ten addional instuons that have commied resources for tesng, evaluaon, and feedback. The system leverages a number of other open source tools. In addion to the Hydra framework and Blacklight discovery interface, audio and video processing and playback capabilies are based on technology from the Opencast Maerhorn project, metadata persistence is provided by the Fedora digital repository system, and metadata indexing is provided by Apache Solr. The architecture of Avalon is designed to be modular and extensible in order to support integraon into and with other academic systems, including integrated library systems, learning management systems, and eventually, scholarly annotaon and research tools. Avalon 2.0, released in October 2013, provides: • A new media player, based on mediaelement.js, that works in desktop and mobile web browsers • A hierarchical permissions model that supports a flexible approach to collecons-based content management • Ingest and management funconality built using the Ruby on Rails- based Hydra framework • Faceted discovery for browse and search via Blacklight • Manual or batch file uploading, transcoding and metadata (MODS) • Authencaon (LDAP, CAS, OmniAuth) • Authorizaon – share resources with individuals and groups or keep them private • Stream-level security for desktop and mobile • Integraon with Red5 and Adobe Flash Media Server • Customized thumbnails by taking a “snapshot” or specifying a mepoint • Support for automated system monitoring, includes an About page • Migraon tools to move content and user groups from Avalon 1.0 to 2.0 Try out Avalon!
