“The Wooden Sky’s Let’s Be Ready channels Americana, the lilt of country and the patient dignity of the National, and it nods at the Hip–the latter thanks partly to Gardiner’s undulating, twang-inflected vocals.”

Welcome to the 13th annual Available Light Film Festival! This is Yukon Film Society’s 30th anniversary season and to celebrate we’re bringing Canadian filmmakers and films from coast to coast to coast to Whitehorse as well as musicians and artists to perform seven live music with cinema performances at the festival this year.

The 26 screenings at ALFF 2015 have been selected to bring you a slice of contemporary cinema. This year’s program shines a particular light on films from the Polar Regions and films from British Columbia. Don’t miss the Yukon premiere of two Yukon features: All the Time in the World (Suzanne Crocker) and Last Stop for Miles (Celia McBride) along with documentaries from Greenland (Sumé), Nunavut (SOL) and Antarctica (A Year on Ice). Independent filmmakers in BC have been making some fabulous films this past year. There are six films from BC at this year’s festival: Two 4 One, Down River, Violent, Just Eat It, Preggoland and Everything Will Be.

You’ll also find beautiful, hilarious and harrowing cinema from elsewhere around the world: Québec, Cambodia, Greenland, Newfoundland & Labrador, Denmark, Norway, UK, Japan, Sweden, Ireland, USA, Germany and the Joe Henry Highway.

If you’re curious or keen about the creation and business end of film and digital media, pick up the detailed program for the ALFF Media Industry Forum.

Please join me in thanking all the artists, musicians and filmmakers for performing or sharing their films at the festival and the forum. It’s with great excitement and honour this year that we’ll be hosting musical legends of the Canadian stage: Tanya Tagaq, John Southworth, Julie Doiron, to name but a few and luminaries of the Canadian screen: Gavin Crawford, Gabrielle Rose, Ben Ratner, Stéphane Lafleur, Joel Thomas Hynes, who have been entertaining Canadians on screens large and small for many years. Thank you, as well, to film critic Geoff Pevere for joining us in Whitehorse again to host conversations with filmmakers throughout the festival.

Enjoy the performances and the screenings. Gunalchîsh, Mahsi cho, merci, gracias, takk and thank you for coming to ALFF.

Our filmmakers share a rich diversity of stories and characters that surprise, touch and entertain us all as well as make us laugh and think. Their expertise is unique. Their profoundly original stories are appreciated worldwide, as attested by tremendous success at the Oscars, Cannes, Berlin, Shanghai as well as many other major festivals and markets.

Telefilm hopes that more and more Canadians get to experience their national cinema, now accessible on multiple platforms, and that they identify with its importance for the country. We provide support to dynamic companies as well as to highly talented creators, actors and artisans from all regions. And we also work with the industry and numerous partners to promote Canadian cinema, both at home and abroad.

7pm Two 4 One (Eye on Canada Opening Gala)

DIR. MAUREEN BRADLEY, BRITISH COLUMBIA, 2014, 77 MIN GALA SPONSORS: TELEFILM CANADA AND CANADA MEDIA FUND

Maureen Bradley’s debut feature is a bittersweet romantic comedy with a transgender hero in an unimaginable predicament. Forty-year-old Adam (This Hour Has 22 Minutes’ Gavin Craw-ford) lives alone in his tiny apartment and feels lost each night in his empty bed. An awkward encounter with a client at work makes Adam realize that he has to quit his crappy job and get his life together. Of course, all of that’s interrupted when he gets a phone call from his hysteri-cal ex-girlfriend, Miriam (Mr. D’s Naomi Snieckus). Miriam is trying to get pregnant with a donor’s sperm and a syringe, but she needs help. Adam tries to convince her she’s unfit to be a mother and, against his better judgment, they wind up hanging out again. She wants his moral support as she tries to get pregnant. She gets a lot more. The day she inseminates herself, they wind up in bed together.

Now for the twist: Adam is transgendered. Four years ago, he started his transition from female to male but it isn’t quite complete. In fact, he gets a little bit pregnant himself. He’s torn between his feelings for Miriam, his need for a masculine identity and his eccentric pot-smoking mother’s (Robson Arm’s Gabrielle Rose) desire for grandchildren in this funny and thought-provoking farce. ~ Terry McEvoy, Vancouver International Film Festival

10:15am Antarctica: A Year on IceDIR. ANTHONY POWELL, NEW ZEALAND, 2013, 91 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: YUKON RESEARCH CENTRE, YUKON COLLEGE

Few people get to Antarctica and fewer by far get to winter over (fewer than 800 each year), so this film provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of a very isolated tribe. A visually stunning film, 10 years in the making, that lets you experience what it is like to live in Antarctica while enduring months of darkness in the harshest place on Earth. Powell makes sparing use of time-lapse to show the encroachment or retreat of the ice sheet; the unloading, loading and departure of a supply ship; and the weather patterns that sweep across and dwarf the human presence.

12:30pm Speaking PartsDIR. ATOM EGOYAN, ONTARIO, 1989, 90 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: YUKON SPRINGS

New, director-supervised digital restoration of Atom Egoyan’s international breakthrough, is a highly compelling and cerebral film about an aspiring actor/janitor/gigolo (Michael McManus) who becomes an object of obsession for his lonely fellow custodian (Arsinée Khanjian) and courts a script writer (Gabrielle Rose) who has written a script based on her own family tragedy. Restored print courtesy the Toronto International Film Festival.

Lead actress Gabrielle Rose will discuss the film with writer and film critic, Geoff Pevere following the screening.

3:00pm Freak Out!DIR. CARL JAVÉR, SWE/GER/NOR/DEN, 2014, 89 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: ALAYUK ADVENTURES

Long-haired barefoot people, free love, veganism, experiments with drugs…the sixties, right? Not quite. In 1900 a group of middleclass kids revolted against their time and started the original alternative community in Switzerland—Monte Verità, the mountain of truth. A community based on veganism, feminism, pacifism and free love. Archival photos, animation, and reenactments bring to vivid life this long-forgotten site of cultural revolution. Carl Javér’s beautifully animated documentary is a reminder that it is always possible to reinvent the world.

This charming and reflective documentary from Dawson City-based filmmaker Suzanne Crocker chronicles a family of five who search for a new perspective by leaving the comforts of home to live remotely in the Yukon wilderness during the long northern winter. The parents leave their jobs and take their three children, ages 10, 8 and 4, to spend nine months living in a small cabin with no road access, no electricity, no running water, no internet, no TV, no phone and, most importantly, no clocks or watches. Yukon premiere screening.

DIR. JACOB TIERNEY, BRITISH COLUMBIA, 2014, 109 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: SEQUOIA KITCHENS & DESIGN

Ruth (Sonja Bennett) is a 35-year-old single woman who, in a moment of impetuous desperation, falsely claims to be pregnant in order to deflect her friends’ and family’s mounting disapproval of her directionless, irresponsible lifestyle. Although she initially tries to come clean, the many perks of pregnancy are far too seductive to ignore. Jacob Tierney (The Trotsky) directs this exceptional cast in a very funny and unconventional comedy about our societal obsession with motherhood and the lengths we’ll go to be part of a club. Co-starring James Caan (The Godfather) and Danny Trejo (Sons of Anarchy).

Winner of the Most Popular Canadian Film at VIFF 2014. Producer, Kevin Eastwood in attendance.

Ghosts of the Joe Henry DAN SOKOLOWSKI, 2015, 20 MIN

This assemblage of sensations of the land, the people, flora and fauna that have inhabited the lands that the Dempster Highway traverses makes up this film without words. Locally, Canada’s only road that crosses the Arctic Circle is referred to as ‘The Joe Henry’ in honour of the Tr’ondek Hwëch’in elder who was instrumental in its construction as the highway passes through the traditional lands of the Hwëch’in peoples. This documentary was commissioned by the Yukon Film Society to celebrate it’s 30th Anniversary.

Chasms of Silence MARTEN BERKMAN, 2014, 12 MIN

Chronicles a quiet walk across the Arctic Circle on Baffin Island. Woven into the images are the voices of Jennifer Berezan and Tanya Tagaq, and the words of poet Anne Michaels, as she contemplates life, death, time and eternity.

Share the Road FRANCIS CASAUBON, 2014, 33 MIN

Winter-cycling has gained a lot of popularity in Whitehorse in recent years. This documentary is about the new relationship between cyclists and car drivers who share the road during winter in Whitehorse and how we can all learn to get along. In French and English with English subtitles.

“With its profound, lonesome beauty, especially in the opening sequence and home-movie footage, Sol is as heartbreaking a film as it is important and timely.” ~ Steve Gravestock, TIFF

Written and directed by Vancouver actor Ben Ratner (Sisters and Brothers), Down River tells the story of three young women, including Gabrielle Miller (Corner Gas) as Fawn, a talented but insecure actress. Colleen Rennison (DaVinci’s City Hall) is Harper, a gifted rock singer teetering between self-destruction and self-discovery, and Jennifer Spence (Continuum) is Aki, a scatological artist who emerges from under her paint-stained hoodie. These women live in the same building and their guide in life is a neighbour named Pearl, portrayed by Helen Shaver (The Color of Money), a charismatic and caring woman who inspires them to new heights. Director Ben Ratner, producer James Brown, composer Kevin House and actress Jennifer Spence in attendance.

Vancouver’s folk-noir songwriter, Kevin House, will perform his songs from the film Down River in an intimate cabaret performance after the screening of the film. Duality is a word that often seems to come up in reviews of Gutter Pastoral, Kevin’s critically acclaimed 2004 debut. Musically, lyrically, and visually this also seems to hold true for World of Beauty released in 2007. If there were some forgotten Delta where the chanson and folk blues traditions congregated it might sound something like this. Kevin will be joined by Whitehorse multi-instrumentalist Scott Maynard for this concert.

4:15pm You’re Sleeping Nicole (Tu Dors Nicole)DIR. STÉPHANE LAFLEUR, QUÉBEC, 2014, 93 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: ASSOCIATION FRANCO-YUKONNAISE

This off-beat charmer from Québec New Wave director Lafleur brings the director’s trademark absurdist sensibility to the tale of a recent university grad (well cast new-comer Julianne Côté as Nicole) lounging in dreamy, directionless ennui during a long hot summer in her small hometown. Photographed in black and white You’re Sleeping Nicole is richly youthful and innocent, blending small town charm with the more universally stylized humility. In French with English subtitles.

“When her older brother Remi (Marc-André Grondin, C.R.A.Z.Y.) unexpectedly returns with his bandmates in tow, disrupting the girls’ half-baked summer, it becomes clear to Nicole that something must—and will—change. Shot in luminous black and white and infused with a sultry melancholy, Tu dors Nicole brilliantly captures that liminal stage where the fading yet familiar attachments of childhood still seem far more appealing, precious, and real than the sterility of the grown-up world.” ~ Steve Gravestock, TIFF Top Ten

Upon learning that 40% of globally-produced food ultimately gets discarded, filmmakers Grant Baldwin and Jenny Rustemeyer decide to embark on a six-month experiment—eating only food that has been discarded or soon will be discarded. In addition to their experiment, food activists provide their perspective on the unnecessary reasons for food waste, public misconceptions concerning best-before dates and the unforeseen problematic issues of discarded food going to landfills. This smartly produced documentary has won many film festival awards including: the VIFF Impact Award, Vancouver International Film Festival, the Emerging Canadian Filmmaker & Top 20 Audience Choice at Hot Docs, a People’s Choice Award at Calgary International Film Festival and Best Canadian Documentary at the Edmonton International Film Festival.

6:15pm MommyDIR. XAVIER DOLAN, QUÉBEC, 2014, 134 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: ASSOCIATION FRANCO YUKONNAISE

Selected one of TIFF’s ‘Canada’s Top Ten’ for 2014 and co-winner of the prestigious Jury Prize at Cannes, Mommy is the best film yet from Québécois wunderkind Xavier Dolan. When single mother Diane (Anne Dorval) brings her teenage son Steve (Antoine-Olivier Pilon) home from a government institution for troubled youth, it’s both an act of maternal love and a huge risk: Steve is a volatile hellraiser with a hair-trigger temper, and Diane is barely keeping it together herself. When a shy neighbour (Suzanne Clément) takes an interest in mother and son, a surprising trio develops. In French with English subtitles.

“Daringly filmed in a 1:1 ratio that mimics the aesthetics of Instagram, Mommy is shot through with dazzling displays of colour and movement that intensify its affecting, outsized emotions.” ~ Cameron Bailey, TIFF Programmer

9:00pm 20,000 Days on EarthDIR. IAN FORSYTH & JANE POLLARD, UNITED KINGDOM, 2014, 97 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: PIXELBOX STUDIO

One of the most critically acclaimed music films of the year, this documentary centres around 24 fictitious hours in the life of Australian musician, author and screenwriter Nick Cave. 20,000 Days On Earth takes us deep into the heart of how myth, memory, love and loss, shape our lives, every single day. The film delves into Nick’s artistic processes, unpicking the stuff that makes him tick. Fusing drama and documentary to weave a cinematic day-in-the-life with unique verité observations of his full creative cycle we meet those who have affected his life, including regular musical collaborator Warren Ellis; actor and friend Ray Winstone; former Bad Seed Blixa Bargeld; and Kylie Minogue, with whom Cave duetted on Where The Wild Roses Grow.

“This day is both more real and less real, more true and less true, more interesting and less interesting than my actual day, depending on how you look at it.” ~ Nick Cave

“Cave knows he’s not young anymore, and won’t always be able to control his work or how it’s perceived. Watching him act accordingly is really inspiring.” ~ Simon Abrams, RogerEbert.com

Winner of the World Cinema Documentary awards for directing and editing at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

Based on the novel by Diana Wynne Jones and directed by animation legend Hayao Miyazaki, Howl’s Moving Castle is the story of Sophie (Emily Mortimer / Jean Simmons), a young woman cursed with an old body by a spiteful witch, and whose only chance of breaking the spell lies with a self-indulgent yet insecure young wizard (Christian Bale) and his companions (Billy Crystal, Josh Hutcherson). English-dubbed version. Young children may find some scenes frightening. Appropriate for ages 5 and up.

12:30pm Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten: Cambodia’s Lost Rock and RollDIR. JOHN PIROZZI, USA/FRA/CAM, 2014, 105 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: YUKON HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

A fascinating exploration of history as reflected through a nation’s popular culture, Pirozzi’s film excavates Cambodia’s lost era of American, French and Afro-cuban inflected music. Through the eyes, words and songs of its popular music stars of the 50s, 60s, and 70s—and what a wonderfully odd mix of musical styles permeated Phnom Phen in the 1960s—this film examines and unravels Cambodia’s tragic past, culminating in the genocidal Khmer Rouge’s dismantling of the society and murder of two million of its citizens.

Combining interviews of the surviving Cambodian musicians themselves and with never-before-seen archival material and rare songs, this documentary tracks the twists and turns of Cambodian music as it morphs into rock and roll, blossoms and is nearly destroyed along with the rest of the country. In Khmer and French with English subtitles.

“Music is a way of healing and caring for Khmer society. Cambodia is a broken society today. Without healing, and dealing with the past, it would be difficult for Cambodians to move forward. Music is magical, and can bring both heritage and contemporary feelings to all—to heal. Music can also help restore what we have lost.”

2:45pm 1000 Times Good Night (Tusen ganger god natt)DIR. ERIK POPPE, NOR/SWE/IRE, 2013, 117 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: LAMARCHE & LANG BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS

Rebecca (the especially magnetic Juliette Binoche) is one of the world’s top war photographers who goes too far on an assignment in Kabul and is seriously injured photographing a suicide bomber. Also starring Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Mature content. Not recommended for young viewers.

“What makes 1,000 Times Good Night more than a dramatic essay on wartime journalism is Ms. Binoche’s wrenchingly honest portrayal of a woman of conscience driven by a mixture of guilt, nobility and self-importance, reckoning belatedly with her destructive impulses.” ~ NY Times

5:15pm DamNationDIR. BEN KNIGHT & TRAVIS RUMMEL, USA, 2014, 88 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: YUKON CONSERVATION SOCIETY

This powerful documentary explores the sea change in North American pride in ‘big dams as engineering wonders’ to the growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers. Dam removal in the American Northwest has moved beyond the fictional Monkey Wrench Gang to the mainstream. Where obsolete dams come down rivers bound back to life, giving salmon and other wild fish the right of return to primeval spawning grounds after decades without access to them.

“A quick, smart documentary about the havoc one country can create in its native fish populations by building 75,000 dams over an 80- or 90-year span.” ~ The Village Voice

7:30pm Mr. TurnerDIR. MIKE LEIGH, UNITED KINGDOM, 2014, 150 MIN SCREENING SPONSOR: MARY-EL FINE FOOD & CATERING

The new film from British director Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies, Career Girls, Vera Drake) is a biopic of the great British painter J.M.W. Turner and stars Timothy Spall in the title role, for which he won the award for Best Actor at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

This lushly photographed film explores the last quarter century of the eccentric painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies. Throughout his life, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular and anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty. Mature content. Not recommended for young viewers.

Mr. Turner has been nominated for four Academy Awards in the categories of Cinematography, Music (Original Score), Production Design and Costume Design.

“Luminous and moving.” ~ The Hollywood Reporter
