The completion in 2016 of half a dozen prominent works is the drumroll that marks this fourth monographic issue.The projects completed in Hong Kong, New York, Milan, or Beirut are all significant, but none as iconic as the two that open the issue, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Tate Modern extension in London, two masterpieces that have effortlessly entered the public imagination and the history of architecture. The issue also includes singular works published as projects in the previous monograph – the museum in Miami, the BBVA headquarters in Madrid, or the Bordeaux Stadium –, and others whose geographic and biographic proximity to the Basel studio renders them even more relevant, from their own archive or the Musée Unterlinden to the latest works carried out for Ricola or Vitra, aside from projects like Stamford Bridge stadium or the National Library of Israel, an itinerary of invention that closes with the proposal for the Museum of the 20th Century.

This abridged account of excellence is enough to justify the publication of a monograph barely four years after the last one devoted to the studio, and to explain also the unique circumstance of Herzog & de Meuron being the first office whose work has merited four volumes of AV, aside from two issues of Arquitectura Viva, and countless features in both magazines and in AV Proyectos. Since 1997 the AV yearbooks publish the list of the twelve most relevant buildings completed in the year, and it is probably fitting to mention that over the last two decades the studio with the greater number of mentions is by far that of the Basel partners, a circumstance which eloquently shows the relevance and the regularity of their production. Despite our efforts to be balanced, this persistent attention can obey to aesthetic preferences or opinions, but few will question the overwhelming presence of the work of the Swiss practice in the current debate and in the register of contemporary architecture.

Such dazzling sequence of artistic achievements cannot be based only on the sharpness of the eye or on the honed sensitivity: it also lies undoubtedly in a vigorous strategic intelligence and in a well-structured professional responsibility, which has allowed the studio to grow in scale and extension without losing the experimental drive and the commitment to permanent innovation, eluding the accommodating routine of processes and languages that is so common in many large offices. Clearly conscious of the value of their architectural legacy, which they precociously document and store, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron transit today through their creative maturity maintaining intact the inquisitive flame and the critical gaze of their early years, recalled here with a selection of journalistic texts, and now adding the intellectual dimension of the penetrating interpretation of modernity contained in Treacherous Transparencies, a little big book which the introductory article dialogues extensively with.

La terminación en 2016 de media docena de obras importantes es el redoble de tambor que señala esta cuarta entrega monográfica. Significativos como son los proyectos culminados en Hong Kong, Nueva York, Milán o Beirut, ninguno tan icónico como los dos que abren el número, la Elbphilharmonie en Hamburgo y la ampliación de la Tate Modern en Londres, dos obras maestras que ingresan con naturalidad y aplomo en la historia de la arquitectura y en la percepción ciudadana. Se publican aquí también obras singulares ya adelantadas en proyecto en la anterior monografía —el museo de Miami, la sede del BBVA o el estadio de Burdeos—, y otras cuya proximidad geográfica y biográfica al estudio de Basilea las hace si cabe más relevantes, desde su propio archivo o el Musée Unterlinden hasta las últimas realizadas para Ricola o Vitra, además de proyectos como el estadio de Stamford Bridge o la Biblioteca Nacional de Israel, un itinerario de invención que se cierra con la propuesta para el Museo del Siglo XX.

Esta enumeración abreviada de excelencia es suficiente para justificar la pu-blicación de una monografía apenas cuatro años después de la última dedicada al estudio, y para explicar también la circunstancia singular de que Herzog & de Meuron sea la primera oficina cuyo trabajo ha merecido cuatro entregas de AV, amén de dos números de Arquitectura Viva, e innumerables referencias tanto en las dos revistas como en AV Proyectos. Desde 1997 los anuarios de AV publican las doce obras más destacadas del año, y seguramente merece señalarse que en las dos décadas transcurridas el estudio con un número mayor de menciones es con diferencia el de Basilea, lo que ilustra elocuentemente tanto la relevancia como la regularidad de su producción. Pese a nuestros esfuerzos por ser ecuánimes, esta atención reiterada puede deberse a preferencias estéticas o sesgos de opinión, pero pocos discutirán la presencia abrumadora de la obra de los suizos en la actualidad y el registro de la arquitectura contemporánea.

Tan deslumbrante secuencia de logros artísticos no se fundamenta sólo en la agudeza de la pupila o en lo afinado de la sensibilidad: reside también sin duda en una musculosa inteligencia estratégica y en una bien estructurada responsabilidad profesional, que ha permitido al estudio crecer en escala y extensión sin perder la voluntad experimental y el empeño en la innovación permanente, eludiendo la rutina acomodaticia de procesos y lenguajes tan frecuente en grandes oficinas. Nítidamente conscientes del valor de su legado arquitectónico, que precozmente documentan y archivan, Jacques Herzog y Pierre de Meuron transitan hoy por la madurez creativa manteniendo intactas la llama inquisitiva y la mirada crítica de su primera etapa, que se recuerda aquí con una selección de textos periodísticos, y añadiendo la solera intelectual de la penetrante interpretación de la modernidad contenida en Treacherous Transparencies, un pequeño gran libro con el que se dialoga in extenso en el artículo introductorio.
