Many family members overlook their own needs when caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Even if the person resides in an Autumn Leaves memory care community, the worry and sadness may continue, affecting their physical health and emotional well-being.

It’s not selfish to take good care of yourself. Neglecting self-care will put your own health at risk, but keeping yourself healthy will help you be a better caregiver.

Many Autumn Leaves communities will be hosting events in January and February focused on caring for those who care for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Ask the Director of Sales and Marketing in your community for more information.

Here are some tips from the Alzheimer’s Association for ways to stay healthy as a caregiver:

LEARN ALL YOU CAN.

The more you know about dementia, the better you can care for your loved one and for yourself. You’ll understand behavior and personality changes that occur, and you’ll know how to cope with them. Our Resource Library has an array of materials that you may find helpful. And keep reading your Autumn Leaves’ bi-weekly Family Education E-Blast for helpful information and updates.

LEAN ON YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM.

Autumn Leaves hosts a monthly support group for family members of residents as well as anyone with a loved one living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. And remember that your Executive Director will gladly help you with any concerns that you have.

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF.

Don’t ignore symptoms and don’t neglect your annual checkup and other doctor appointments. Watch your diet, exercise, and get plenty of rest. Manage your stress with relaxation techniques like meditation or a relaxing soak in the tub.

LEARN TO ACCEPT CHANGE.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, as are most forms of dementia. The caregiving staff at Autumn Leaves can help you anticipate and understand physical and behavioral changes that your loved one is likely to experience.

LOOK AHEAD.

Make legal and financial plans. Consult a professional to discuss legal and financial issues such as advance directives, wills, estate planning, housing, and long-term care planning. Involve your loved one if he or she is still able. The more you plan ahead, the less stress you will have.
