Customer Quote:
“The programme really helped
me and my family learn more
about healthy eating and
exercise. The information given
by the instructors was amazing
and the kids enjoyed all the
activities. Wish the programme
could run for at least 12 weeks
instead of 8 weeks”

Start in the Park
Our Start in the Park events this summer took off in style with a popular Bush Tucker
Trial and fun filled activities throughout the day .
With great weather and eager families it was extremely rewarding for us to meet new and
exciting people. Take a look at some of our moments in the parks this summer.
Stirley Farm
Our day at Stirley Farm started
with a scenic walk from
Newsome High School, we then got
stuck in picking fresh crops in
preparation for our lunch, a home
made vegetable soup with a fruit
salad for dessert.
It was a spectacular day that our
group thoroughly enjoyed.
“Stirley Farm was a great event, we really enjoyed it and hope we get the chance to do it again”

Walking for children and families
Start has been working alongside local libraries and groups to offer a range of walks.
Family Walks - designed for parents, grandparents, siblings and the wider family to attend and enjoy
with the children.
Story themed walks – Incorporate a variety of story-telling, crafts, and an ‘eye-spy’ element into the
walk. These include fun elements of literacy, spelling and numeracy into the exercise. This allows the
walk to be educational as well as improving fitness. These walks rely upon collaborations with librar-
ies and children’s centres, which through their resources allow us to make this more than just a
walk.
Nature walks – The activities for these are similar to those in the ‘story themed walks’. They are centred
around parks and other open spaces and encourage the families to learn about the natural world
around them through spotting wildlife and inspecting leaves and flowers.
Over the ‘6 week’ Summer Holidays we had 9 different walks running with over 235 people attending
Halloween Walks

6 Partnership work:
Ashbrow School
The very first pilot of the 4-7 Ready
steady Go Schools programme was
successfully launched at the end of
the summer term. Over 4 weeks, 15
children were invited to come to meet
MJ and join him on a journey around
different planets to learn about
healthy eating and physical activity.
The school gave good feedback stating how much all the children had enjoyed
the activities. Well done to everyone who took part!
Giant’s Community Trust
Start is pleased to be working alongside
the Giants, Public Health and the Com-
munity Engagement Team to develop a
new health intervention aimed at Giants
Fans.
Before the
kick off at the
John Smith
Stadium, Start
were carrying
out a health survey of fans to find out
what areas of their lifestyles they might
want the Giant’s support with.
Watch this space for the outcome of the
survey, but also a new project which
families can access.
Made in Huddersfield
The made in Huddersfield event was held in the
town centre of Huddersfield, a sister event ran
alongside this spectacular day at Greenhead Park
where Start had there own pitch and
demonstration stand. This promotional event of
Yorkshire’s home grown produce drew in quite a
crowd.
