It is my honour, on behalf of The University of Winnipeg community, to offer sincere congratulations to each of you on your achievements. Today we gather to celebrate your success, acknowledge those who helped you reach this point, and reflect on where you will go next. UWinnipeg is located on Treaty One land in the heart of the Métis nation, and we are a richly diverse community. It is our underlying strength. We are deeply committed to reaching out to all students, including those who have traditionally faced barriers to participating in post-secondary education. I hope you have been enriched by the exposure to the many ideas, cultures, and life experiences that flourish here.
Your graduation comes at an exciting time during our institution’s history, as UWinnipeg celebrates 50 years of growing leaders. You are now a member of this extended UWinnipeg family, joining more than 50,000 people who have passed through these doors as students. I am one of those graduates, and I attribute my academic and career successes to the solid foundation I received at UWinnipeg, and the dedicated professors who inspired me to continue to strive and learn.
It is my sincere hope that your time at UWinnipeg has allowed you to realize your unique talents as you move forward to create a difference in your community. On behalf of our faculty and staff, congratulations once again and please accept my best wishes for your adventures ahead.

Dr. Jack Zipes is a world-renowned scholar of fairy tale studies and children’s literature. He is a strong contributor to the intellectual life of many communities, including that of faculty and students at The University of Winnipeg.
As Professor Emeritus (University of Minnesota), Zipes is a multi-lingual scholar whose academic career spans more than 40 years and includes the publication of 69 books in English and German, in addition to numerous essays. His impact is far-reaching: he shifted the field of study of traditional texts directed to young people with his insight that folk and fairy tales must be read within the historical, economic, social, and cultural contexts of their production. His influence has been felt by many at UWinnipeg, where the study of children’s literature has been an institutional strength for decades.
Zipes visited UWinnipeg annually from 2011-2015, presenting well-attended public talks, holding teach-ins with students and colleagues, and tirelessly mentoring and supporting the academic journeys of others. Most recently, he gifted his unique and rich collection of 1,000 fairy tale films to The University of Winnipeg library, the largest database of fairy tale films in the world. This peerless collection of resource material cements UWinnipeg as the place to conduct research in this area.
By tenaciously championing the humanities and imagination as powerful forces in enabling social justice, Zipes is an inspiration internationally. The University of Winnipeg is proud to present Dr. Jack Zipes with an Honorary Doctor of Laws.

Dr. Patricia Fitzpatrick has made significant contributions to environmental, social, and economic sustainability at The University of Winnipeg and within the wider community. Her work over the last 20 years has focused on better environmental governance surrounding large-scale development in Canada.
She is an expert in environmental assessment and has been involved in reviews of Manitoba’s hog industry, the Keeyask hydroelectric project, and Manitoba Hydro’s Bipole III Transmission Line, among others.
Between 2010 and 2014, Fitzpatrick undertook a federally-funded research program in government and voluntary mining sustainability policies in Canada and Brazil. The purpose of this work was to explore how to foster community resilience in single-industry mining locales.
She has published extensively on the topic of good environmental planning and has participated as an expert witness in many regulatory proceedings — including, most recently, as a panelist for the federal government’s environmental assessment processes review. By providing her expert opinion on large-scale projects, Fitzpatrick assists in making Canada a more sustainable place to live.
An advocate for knowledge mobilization and public participation, she has increased public understanding of her field through several creative campaigns. Her Legitimacy Project aims to improve the effectiveness and transparency of environmental assessment and governance. The project has been successful in engaging the public through a series of online videos titled “Let’s Talk EA.”
At UWinnipeg, she has provided invaluable mentorship and support to undergraduate and graduate students in the geography and environmental science departments. Fitzpatrick does an exemplary job of getting students involved in the community, and provides many opportunities for students to participate in sustainability-driven research.
She has helped raise the University’s reputation as a leader in sustainability on the provincial, national, and international stages through her involvement in high-profile conferences and her partnerships with other sustainability-minded researchers around the world.
For her commitment to environmental governance, sustainability, and public participation, The University of Winnipeg is proud to present Dr. Patricia Fitzpatrick with the 2017 Campus Sustainability Recognition Award.

In honour of our golden anniversary, The University of Winnipeg is proud to present a dedicated member of our staff with the 50th Anniversary Sustainability Recognition Award. Alana Lajoie-O’Malley is our Senior Advisor for Research and Sustainability and the key champion of UWinnipeg’s sustainability vision.
Her tireless efforts to minimize our campus’s overall environmental impact have seen the University cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 32 per cent below 1990 levels — even with the addition of five new buildings.
Between 2003 and 2006, Lajoie-O’Malley was a founding member of the student group that lobbied UWinnipeg to establish a sustainability initiative and set clear GHG emission reduction targets. She played a key role in developing the concept paper that framed much of the University’s approach to sustainability and community engagement in the decade that followed.
In September 2017, UWinnipeg unveiled its second five-year institutional Sustainability Strategy. Both collaborative efforts were
spearheaded by Lajoie-O’Malley and provided concrete, measurable targets for improving environmental, social, and economic sustainability on campus.
Lajoie-O’Malley is a frequent guest speaker on climate action, sustainability planning, and environmental advocacy in classrooms and conferences. She advocates for the value of education in advancing social change.
When public speaking or participating in dialogues and consultations, Lajoie-O’Malley never shies away from pushing the envelope and challenging groups to reconsider what is possible. She is firmly committed to clearing the path for young people to speak louder, clearer, and more intelligently about issues that matter to them.
Lajoie-O’Malley has served on the Board of the Manitoba Eco-Network twice and has supported or co-founded other grassroots organizations working on climate issues in Manitoba. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons). She also holds a Master in Philosophy in Modern South Asian Studies from The University of Oxford.

Dr. Narad Rampersad is a knowledgeable and gifted researcher with an exceptional publication record who has garnered international recognition for the quality of his work. He is considered to be one of the best of his generation.
His expertise spans a variety of areas in discrete mathematics, including formal languages, automata theory, descriptional complexity, pattern avoidance, and number theory — but is internationally renowned for his research in combinatorics on words (the study of patterns in sequences over a finite set of symbols) .
Rampersad is known for his clever and intricate solutions to hard problems that others have been unable to solve. His postdoctoral fellowship at UWinnipeg with Dr. James Currie (mathematics and statistics) jointly resolved the last remaining open cases of a long standing conjecture in combinatorics on words known as Dejean’s Conjecture. The final step to this solution represents one of the most important results in combinatorics on words in the last 25 years.
As a young researcher, he has already made an impressive mark in his field with 16 conference publications, 56 journal publications, and a chapter for a Cambridge University Press publication.
Rampersad’s initial Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Discovery Grant received $85,000 in funding over five years — a significant figure for a first-time applicant in mathematics. He also has received The University of Winnipeg Award of Merit for each of the years from 2011-2014.
Rampersad has supervised seven undergraduate research projects and co-supervised two postdoctoral researchers. Each project generated papers published in or submitted to refereed journals, thus demonstrating Rampersad’s dedication to the junior researchers under his expert mentorship.
He is described as an excellent colleague who is very popular with students. For his deep commitment to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics through his stellar research career, teaching, and administrative service, The University of Winnipeg is proud to present Dr. Narad Rampersad with the Erica and Arnold Rogers Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship.

For countless UWinnipeg students, staff, and faculty facing stress, Barb Read has been a compassionate and calming influence.
Since an introductory workshop in 2014, Read has volunteered her time and expertise to offer twice-weekly Mindfulness Meditation sessions to the UWinnipeg and external community at no cost. A mindfulness meditation facilitator, she has grown the workshop from a small group exercise for her colleagues and students to a program that has been integrated into courses and wellness initiatives across campus.
Read offers more than just a warm and approachable presence — she is a vital resource to many in the community. Her sessions are an inclusive space, where participants feel comfortable sharing personal details. Her empathetic nature allows people to feel understood and valued, while her cheerfulness is infectious to those around her.
Read approaches her volunteer activities with professionalism and attention to detail. She is steadfast in her preparation, continuing to hold meetings around
logistical issues — and bringing the same, vibrant energy week after week. She also dedicates herself to improving her craft by pursuing education at home and abroad.
Although recently retired, these same qualities were ref lected in Read’s performance as the Coordinator of Adult Learner Services and Recognition of Prior Learning. In her role as coordinator, she assisted with each step of university life — all the way from the application process to graduation — helping make education accessible and obtainable for adult learners, many of whom were facing strenuous life circumstances. She also organized and taught the Study Skills Workshops, integrating mindfulness meditation where suitable, which helped students navigate the challenges of adjusting to and succeeding in university life.
For her promotion of healthy lifestyles, academic excellence, and a safe, reflective environment on campus, The University of Winnipeg honours Barb Read with the Clarence Atchison Award for Excellence in Community Service.

As a policy analyst with the Government of Manitoba’s Indigenous and Northern Relations Healthy Foods Initiative, Andi Sharma is internationally recognized for her forward-thinking research into social enterprise, poverty, and world food systems. She has published the results of her research in a number of public and scholarly journals, and has been invited to present her work in several international venues across the United States, Barbados, and Switzerland.
Sharma obtained a 4-year honours-level Bachelor of Commerce degree in 2010 from The University of Manitoba and a Masters of Public Administration jointly from The University of Manitoba and The University of Winnipeg in 2013. She is currently working towards her pilot’s license (supported by an Amelia Earhart Scholarship established by the Manitoba Chapter of the Canadian 99’s International Association of Women Pilots), which reflects her deep commitment to providing food supplies to Northern Indigenous communities in remote locations.
This year, Sharma will serve as the 2017 Ambassador for Social Protection by the United Nations Development Programme. As a Winnipeg Food Council member, she advises the City of Winnipeg’s mayor and council on food system-related issues across Manitoba.
Having emigrated from Barbados to Canada in 1997, Sharma is dedicated to supporting communities of immigrant and refugee women in Canada in her role as the President of The Immigrant Women’s Association of Manitoba.
A highly driven and successful young professional in her chosen field, Sharma is a visionary whose ambition, industrious and hard-working nature, and passion for social enterprise has already made an indelible impact on the city of Winnipeg, the province of Manitoba, and the international community. The University of Winnipeg Alumni Association is proud to recognize Andi Sharma with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Annie McBay graduates from a 4-year Honours degree program in Religion and Culture with an impressive academic and research track record. She has consistently produced high quality research papers while maintaining a strong grade point average.
Additionally, McBay worked as a research assistant for Dr. Carlos Colorado and the Centre for the Liberal Arts and Secular Society (CLASS), assisting with the production of a documentary on religion, secularism, and public life in Canada. In her work for Dr. Colorado, she helped conduct interviews with a number of prominent leaders, including Senator Murray Sinclair, among others. Her confidence and poise in these settings was impressive — she was an effective ambassador for the project and for UWinnipeg.
McBay wrote an exceptionally creative and insightful research paper (“Accidental Sufism: The Lego Movie and Ibn al-’Arabi”) in 2016. The paper skillfully highlighted the intersection of popular culture and medieval Islamic philosophy and was accepted to the American Academy of Religion Upper Midwest Regional Conference in Minneapolis. Another paper she wrote,
“Women of the Wall: A Religious Campaign Inspired by Secular Values,” was published last year in the journal Crossings.
In her words: “There is value and importance in studying the liberal arts. I have learned how to really listen, and engage in dialogue and interact with the world around me. I will now always be learning, beyond the classroom.”
McBay values service to the community. She has often volunteered at UWinnipeg and served on the Axworthy Lecture Series Committee for several years, which can involve intensive workloads. As the only student member of a committee that includes faculty and senior executives, she often steered conversation and demonstrated clear and impressive aptitudes for leadership and strategic planning. She also volunteers at the Fort Whyte Alive farm, and previously volunteered for the Rainbow Resource Centre, a non-profit that provides support for LGBTQ communities in Manitoba.
McBay intends to work for a few years before pursuing a Master’s degree; her aim is to pursue a career with a community-based organization.

ACADEMIC DRESS
Academic dress originated in medieval times to provide warmth in the damp halls of learning. In its present form, it includes a gown, hood (worn over the shoulders) and a cap or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive dress for each degree offered, which explains the variety seen in the academic procession.
The University of Winnipeg academic dress conforms to the North American Intercollegiate Code. All graduates wear a black gown which varies according to the degree conferred. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed in front and is distinguished by its pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed to be worn either open or closed in front and has closed sleeves with an opening to free the hands. The front portion of the sleeve below the opening has a long semi-circular cut-out. Doctorate gowns also may be worn open or closed. They are faced with velvet.
The edging colour on the hood indicates the faculty in which a degree is conferred: Graduate Studies – red; Science – gold; Education – blue; Arts – white; Business & Economics – brown; Kinesiology - green. The width of edging is determined by the degree: three inches for doctors; two inches for masters and bachelors. Hoods are lined in red with a white chevron.
Honorary doctors’ gowns are red in colour and are faced with white velvet. They are worn with red Tudor bonnets. The hood colour signifies the honorary degree: white for Laws; golden yellow for Science; admiralty blue for Letters; purple for Divinity. Hoods are lined in red and white – The University of Winnipeg colours. Fellows wear a gown of blue with neither hat nor hood. Members of The University’s senior administration wear gowns of varying colours. They do not wear hoods.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG COAT OF ARMS
The Coat of Arms of The University of Winnipeg was officially adopted by the governing bodies of The University during the academic session of 1972-73. The elements found within the Coat of Arms have been associated over the years with both Manitoba and Wesley Colleges, the ancestors of United College. The bunch of grapes in the lower portion of the inner shield derives from the Coat of Arms of Manitoba College. The grape symbol has its origin in the College seal adopted in the charter of 1871. The cross, the lamp and the open book derive from the Coat of Arms of Wesley College, designed in 1897 by Dr. J.H. Riddell. The cross — the symbol of sacrificial service in the interest of humanity — was the basis for his design and upon it he placed a shield — the
symbol of protection. The lamp — the symbol of light — also represents learning, to which the Colleges have been devoted for over a century in the Province of Manitoba. The open book — representing instruction in the way of life and the bringing of understanding to the student — symbolizes knowledge in a general sense, although it may carry overtones of the Holy Scriptures in a more limited interpretation.
The motto, placed upon a scroll below, is the United College motto, here retained: Lux et Veritas Floreant (Let Light and Truth Flourish). The words catch the central import of the lamp (light) and the open book (truth), and express the hope that both may flourish (as the grape) in our country (the cross).
While The University of Winnipeg received its charter in 1967, the institution’s roots stretch back more than 145 years to an era of unprecedented growth and energy that gripped Winnipeg at the turn of the last century. In 1938, Manitoba College and Wesley College joined forces to become United College, founded on the ideal that faith and politics can intersect to create lasting social change.
Today, UWinnipeg’s vibrant urban campus — located on Treaty No. 1 land, in the heart of the Métis homeland — is home to approximately 14,000 students, faculty, staff, and researchers. With an interdisciplinary
approach and undergraduate studies in arts, business and economics, education, kinesiology and applied health, and sciences — along with graduate programs; an English Language Program; Professional, Applied and Continuing Education; and The Collegiate high school — UWinnipeg is a place that attracts and nurtures a rich diversity of learners who are ready to make a real world impact.
The University of Winnipeg is committed to advancing reconciliation and is noted for academic excellence, Indigenous inclusion, environmental commitment, small class sizes, and campus diversity.

To the PACE Graduates of 2017:
On behalf of the staff and instructors at The University of Winnipeg Professional, Applied and Continuing Education (PACE) I offer you our most sincere congratulations on your graduation today. We consider ourselves lucky to have been on this journey with you as you studied at PACE. Whether you studied part-time or were at PACE for a year, we know it took a lot of commitment to complete your program. Many of you uprooted your former life and came a long way, far away from friends and family, to study in Winnipeg. Others have juggled family and work life, while taking courses part-time. For all of you, the road has been long and hard, and now that you have reached the end it is time celebrate your accomplishment with PACE staff, instructors, classmates, friends and family.
Your certificate or diploma is a huge accomplishment, so take the time to reflect on what you have learned both inside and outside the classroom. You are now prepared to do anything you want as you have proven you have what it takes to be successful. The world is a better place with you in it.
We are so thankful that you choose The University of Winnipeg Professional, Applied and Continuing Education to be your place of study. Please stay connected with us now that you are a graduate as there are many opportunities to come back as mentors, guest speakers, or attend some of our events. Some of you will become employers of future graduates, or even future PACE instructors. Your new journey has just begun!
Congratulations graduates and best wishes in your future endeavors.
