Dear colleagues

Welcome to the Autumn issue of Foundation. We have lots of news and events to report on as we head into the final quarter of the year.

In this issue you can read about the impact we are making with the many charities we support each year. There are some fantastic stories from across the country, where charities supported by the Charitable Foundation are truly making a difference to people’s lives.

It is great to see that lots of our community have been out and about giving charities the good news that they have been awarded a Foundation

grant. I am keen that we continue to bridge that gap between the St. James’s Place community and the charities we support, creating opportunities for you all to get involved. There is so much more we can offer the charities we award grants to besides the grant itself; through volunteering our time and sharing our skills we can really add value and make a positive difference across our communities.

And a big thank you to everyone for your continued fundraising efforts. With your support we have now raised £8.2 million in 2019 and expect to raise £12 million by the end of the year. I would like to send a special thank you to Andy Chatterton whose Summer Swing event has now raised £1 million since it first began – what a fantastic achievement by Andy and his team. Clearly the Summer Swing has gone from strength to strength over the years and contributed greatly so much to our grant-giving programmes, so that we can reach out to even more

charities. Thanks also to the Academy and the ‘Directors Challenge’ scheme, which is an ongoing source of support to us – and well done to the M9 team for their recent efforts.

Also one last thing to mention: don’t forget the double matching offer on all new covenants set up in 2019. We are now in the last few months of the year, so, if you’re not already signed up, do make the most of the double matching offer, as it will end soon. The double matching is available for the first 12 months after you sign up. As an example, a gift of just £5 a month over a year, in real terms, means £225 will be raised.

Thank you for your continued support.

It is important that we monitor what we do and understand the impact we make on the charities we support.

Following a recent evaluation project, we know that our impact since 1992 is considerable and growing by the year. Some of the key numbers are shown opposite and really demonstrate the scale of what we have achieved over our history.

However, it’s not just the numbers that have made a difference, but the wider holistic support we have shared with these charities.

This makes our impact even stronger, and it’s best demonstrated with the quotes below from some of the charities we have supported.

‘The support from St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation came at a

time when it was able to help us to restructure to ensure that we deliver

high quality services in the most cost effective way. We reduced our

expenditure whilst maintaining the same levels of service.’

‘Having such a significant donation, over a period of time, has given us the

confidence to increase the number of young people we support year on year, helping us

be more ambitious in a safe way.’

‘Without St. James’s Place, we would not be where we are today. So far, we have

transformed the lives of over 1.1 million children since 2013, demonstrated the

closure of 105 institutions, and are currently working alongside governments

and civil society organisations in over 30 countries to dismantle orphanage-

based care systems.’

‘The project has trained teachers, produced learning resources and

improved education for 10,400 children. Ethiopian government conducted

external evaluation & has now adopted the programme as an approved approach

for schools. It has been rolled out in Addis and is being rolled out via

regional authorities.’

The St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation continues to make a significant difference to the charities we help and, in turn, the people they support – inspiration for us all. This wouldn’t be possible without you.

Giving young people confidence to move forward

‘I’ve always been told I can’t do so many things because of my condition. Climbing Out has shown me that I can. I so appreciate and value that independence and freedom. I’m going to be making some big changes to my life.’

Sally

‘The future looks bright – Climbing Out has given me the confidence to move forward and follow my dreams. I was told I would never get out of hospital, never go to university. Climbing Out has shown me that I can!’

Hannah

Here are just a few of the comments from the young people:

THE IMPACT OF OUR GRANTS

Climbing Out organises and coordinates five-day programmes in the Peak District for young people facing a life-changing injury, illness or trauma. The Charitable Foundation awarded Climbing Out £20,000 in 2018 to fund the support for ten young people on the Climbing Out programme for two years.

These programmes have a huge impact on the young people involved in the short space of five days. We recently had 14 young people taking part who face a range of health conditions, as well as a young man who had significant brain trauma after an unprovoked violent stabbing in October last year. Chris has been left unable to walk and talk, but his brain is as sharp and active as it ever was. He was simply amazing on the programme.

The week showed them what they could do, despite the challenges they’re facing. It helped them set new goals to work towards and to put a plan in place about how they’re going to start working towards those goals; but first and foremost, they had fun and it was magical to see.

Going from a dark place to endless opportunities

I’m Jenny, and before I came to Circle Collective I was spending most of my time at home and struggling with depression; so not being productive wasn’t healthy and it made me feel low all the time.

I was referred to Circle Collective by my Careers Advisor. I was given help with my CV and sat in workshops on confidence building and interview skills, which I really needed and made me feel much better when going for interviews.

I had no work experience and Circle Collective helped by giving me experience in the retail store where I learnt about working with customers, using the till and

pre-retailing. Being interested in fashion, I was also given an opportunity to work on their new women’s clothing line and help out on a fashion shoot. I hadn’t done anything creative in a while, so I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed it!

I now have a job working as a Sales Assistant at Hawes & Curtis, which I was put forward for through Circle Collective’s contacts. They really helped me when I was in a dark place in my life and I just want to say thank you for all the support you’ve given me!

Jenny – participant of the ‘Back Your Future’ programme

Jenny has come out of her shell in leaps and bounds and is now a confident and bubbly personality, working in her first job in a high-end retail fashion store and we are so happy for her. Jenny recently won a Gary Francis Young Achiever Award for her transformational journey. Ren Balogun, Circle Collective

St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation awarded the charity a grant of £10,000 to help fund a full-time Job Coach in Hackney. This role involves delivering the ‘Back Your Future’ programme for disadvantaged, unemployed young people in the borough, providing 1:1 support, workshops and work experience.

Find out more at https://circlecollective.org/.

Circle Collective is a charity and streetwear store based in Hackney and Lewisham that works in partnership with organisations such as St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation to get young people experiencing barriers into permanent, life-changing work. The charity arm runs a successful ‘Back Your Future’ programme, while the streetwear store is a social enterprise that serves as a training ground for young people and reinvests all profits back into the charity.

Chamwell Centre update: Transforming the lives of disabled children across Gloucestershire

St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation has provided £1.4 million to the project to fund the hydrotherapy pool.

We recently visited the Chamwell Centre midway through to see how the project is progressing. This state-of-the-art centre is currently being built in the grounds of The Milestone School in Gloucester.

This is a rare and immensely valuable resource and will help improve the lives of young people with a disability both at the school and across Gloucestershire. It will benefit those with physical and neurological disabilities and complex medical conditions providing them with hoists for safe pool access, an 18m pool with graduated depth and water maintained at 33°C to allow tight joints and muscles to relax.

The charity’s Chair of Trustees, Dr Marie Owen, said: ‘Without the major grant from St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation, this project would not be possible.’

The 9th annual St. James’s Place Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards, celebrated the achievements of courageous and determined youngsters, from across the region. This event honours outstanding young people in Yorkshire and raises funds for the Foundation.

Ewan Dowes, Charitable Foundation Committee Rep in Leeds said: ‘It was an amazing evening recognising the courage and achievements of some of Yorkshire’s finest young people. We are already planning for our 10th anniversary next year, and intend to make it very special indeed.’

The awards attracted nominations for some truly inspirational children and young adults this year, whose lives have often been affected by illness or extreme adversity.

This year’s spectacular awards welcomed 750 guests from the entertainment, business and sports industries.

FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS

Manchester Academy completes ‘Directors Challenge’

‘The Foundation has personal significance for me, and so, I particularly wanted to help raise funds. In 2014, the Foundation awarded a grant to Gaddum Centre, to help pay for one of their child bereavement counsellors. This Manchester-based charity provided my children with invaluable child bereavement support after my

husband was suddenly killed in a car accident. The support was focused on the use of craft and activities, which created an informal comfortable space for my daughter to talk about what had happened, the changes to her life and to develop tools to deal

with it. She went from not wanting to go to school to loving it again; and seeing her happier helped me too. I can say from first-hand experience that the SJP Charitable

Foundation, through its support of smaller charities, really makes a difference to people’s lives. Thank you.’

Marc Ulett raised £567.50 towards the overall M9 total

‘After over 20 years of back pain in 2006 I had a spinal fusion

operation, which was the last hope for me to try and reduce the horrific pain I suffered and try and get my life back. Thankfully the operation was a success and after five years of rehabilitation I am mostly pain-free and able to lead a normal life. For a

few years I have thought about giving back through a challenge. When I

recently joined the Academy at St. James’s Place, my colleagues and I were given the opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause. Swimming has massively helped me, so I thought

it was fitting to do the Uswim! 500m open-water challenge at

Salford Quays.’

In the first few days of the St. James’s Place Academy, Jason Flood (Academy Director) gave the Manchester Academy the ‘Directors Challenge’ to set up a fundraising committee and raise as much as possible for the Charitable Foundation during their time in the Academy. Everyone in M9 agreed to raise at least £100, either by committing to supporting an event organised by the M9 committee or by organising their own fundraising initiative. These included an open- water swim, cake sale, climbing Snowdon, card nights, a boxing match, a weekly walking challenge, a raffle and a lunchtime curry sale.

The main event was the Yorkshire Three Peaks, including most of M9, family members and a dog! A great team effort got them round, with the help of plasters and lots of homemade cakes.

Academy Partner Rowena Birch (above in pink) explains why supporting the Charitable Foundation is important to her:

Partner Practice Franklyn Financial Management (FFM) raised more than £86,000 (before matching) at the Summer Swing 2019. This takes their total up to £1 million since the first Summer Swing 12 years ago. The event was held at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa and guests enjoyed a charity golf day followed by a Gala evening of entertainment

to raise money for the Charitable Foundation. Andrew Chatterton, Managing Director of Franklyn Financial Management, said: ‘We’re absolutely delighted to have reached such a fantastic milestone, which is all thanks to our sponsors over the years as well as the FFM team and of course the many guests we’ve welcomed.’

Summer Swing

Harvest Moon BallWesterham Foundation Committee, led by Harvest Moon Ball Co-Founders and Hosts, Alison Wright and Michelle Germain, were delighted at the success of the 6th annual black-tie event in aid of the St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation. This year

they raised an astonishing £52,000 (including Company matching), bringing the total raised from all the Balls to date to over £200,000.The guests were treated to a night of glitz and glamour, with a James Bond theme, in the fabulous Grand Hotel in

Brighton. They heard from Paralympic Champion and Panathlon Ambassador Liz Johnson, enjoyed a fabulous auction hosted by our very own Secret Agent, Ian Price and were entertained by an outstanding Adele tribute who opened her set with Skyfall.
