CHAIRMAN’S CHATMuch has happened since our last newsletter. First and most importantly our financial assets have continued to grow. This is thanks, in the main, to a small band of volunteers. We need to commend those people for their hard work (they know who they are). Of course, it would not be right to miss the fact that the President and his wife to continue to liaise with Lions clubs, locally and internationally, to gain support.

We have successfully held our usual competitions using the skills and abilities of Gail and David Stott. Congratulations to all the participants in these competitions, winners or not.

Our trials for the World Bowls in 2021 have been completed, and a team selected. I wish all those going every success. I also have to report that England have three highly experienced umpires who are prepared, at their own cost, to help out in Australia. If you are available to participate in our Bowlathon in Harrow, North West London from 10:00am on 4 January 2020 please let Chris Price know. Monies raised will help those selected for Australia to attend.

As far as development is concerned, I attended a meeting with BBS and DBE a couple of days ago. One of our hurdles is having accredited coaches throughout the country who can effectively support new VI bowlers. Therefore, we will address this issue first.

I remain most impressed with the genuine support of committee members, Team Manager and Assistant Team Manager.

VIBE will host an international tournament next November. At present triples will be the main event. We will not necessarily invite the elite England bowlers to participate. Therefore, it is quite possible that if you enter, and do well, at our indoor triples next April you will be asked to participate next November.

As ever, I wish you all well, and good bowling this winter.David Mears

VIBE INDOOR PAIRS 2019The VIBE Indoor Pairs were held in Nottingham IBC once again in 2019.

VIBE expresses its gratitude to all the staff at the club for their welcome and hard work to make our Tournament so enjoyable.

Hazel Quayle once again sponsored the event but, unfortunately, couldn’t be with us in person this year. Our best wishes go to her and we look forward

to seeing her again next year - if not before!

Thanks also to our Umpires and markers - we couldn’t do it without you!

36 visually impaired bowlers, from across the country, along with friends, helpers and spectators, descended on Nottingham IBC for an intensive weekend’s bowling. The large number of entrants meant that the competition had to be played as a single group - with it being ‘the luck of the draw’ as to which pairs played each other. Each pair played six games and the top two played off for the main competition trophies, whilst the pairs finishing the ‘round-robin’ games in third and fourth places played off for the ‘Plate’.Last year’s winner, Alan Lyne - this time paired up with B1 World Champion Sarah Marshall - started as he’d finished last year and the pair looked formidable as they won every game before unexpectedly losing their last one.Meanwhile, there were other pairs playing extremely well and, at the conclusion of the ‘round robin’ games, Lyne and Marshall found themselves out of the competition - ousted on shot difference. The Plate was contested by Yeovil’s Ron Homer and Mo Perry, who finished runners-up for the second year running - beaten this time by the Pennine pairing of Keith Collins and Gareth HarwoodThe main Final was a real cliff-hanger between Cornwall’s Alison Yearling and Geoff Wherry who had been un-beaten in the round-robins. Facing them - and also unbeaten - was the Metro pairing of Maureen Ryan and VIBE Chairman, David Mears.  After the allocated one-and-a-half hours, the pairs were tied and the winners were therefore decided on an extra end. Maureen Ryan played two great bowls to within a foot or so - but not to be denied, England’s Commonwealth Games V.I. bowler Alison Yearling played the perfect draw for shot. Despite David Mears’ best efforts, he couldn’t disturb the head, so the 2019 Indoor Pairs winners are Alison Yearling and Geoff Wherry.  Prizes were presented by Steve Rodwell - Development Manager of the E.I.B.A.

VIBE INDOOR TRIPLES 2019MIDGLOS IBC   6 th & 7 th APRIL 2019

Nine Triples congregated at MidGlos Indoor Bowling Club – who had generously donated their facilities free of charge – for VIBE’s National Indoor Triples competition.  The awkward number of entries obliged us to play a full round-robin competition over 9 sessions, so Saturday was ‘full on’, with four of the nine teams playing five, one-and-a-half hour games – whilst five teams did get a session off. At the conclusion of day one, Gareth Harwood’s triple was in the lead – having won four of their five games and drawing the fifth. In second – 2 points behind, Mo Perry’s triple, followed in third place by Phil Dutton’s trio.By Sunday lunchtime, Mo Perry had had a big win but also a heavy defeat whilst Gareth Harwood suffered a big defeat and had his ‘sit-out’ session, so Perry now led on shot difference, with Dutton’s triple remaining in third by one point from Geoff Wherry’s Cornish contingent – who only had one game left to play after lunch. In Session 8, both the leading triples won their games and the shot difference came down to 4 in favour of Mo Perry. Phil Dutton’s trio lost whilst David Mears’ team won again – beating brother Adrian’s triple - after their poor start to the competition, to be just one point behind the third-placed team. The final session’s games saw second-placed Harwood’s triple against third- placed Dutton, whilst Mo Perry faced Chris Turnbull and David Mears faced Marjorie Convey’s triple.  Down to the wire! And, after Mo Perry lost his final game – and Gareth Harwood won – the Runners-up were Darren Moon, Ron Homer and Mo Perry.

The 2019 V.I.B.E. National Indoor Triples Champions are:Steve Dewitt, John Palmer & Gareth Harwood

Many thanks to MidGlos Indoor Bowling Club for their great hospitality. Next year’s competition will

again be at MidGlos on 18th & 19th April 2020.It would be great if we could fill the 12 team places

available!!

UK VI Indoor Singles 2019

West of Scotland IBC, Rutherglen, Glasgow.

The England party assembled in the Queen Street Travelodge the evening before the competition started – those who were able having been to the club for a practice session beforehand.

Following our outdoor successes in Leamington in 2016 and Llandrindod Wells in 2018, the team was hopeful of another good showing – this time indoors and on the Scots’ “Home Patch”. Scotland have held the indoor ‘Friendship Cup’ for twelve years (six competitions) – although England did manage a tie in 2011 – and so we knew that competition would be fierce. The full party was:

ALSO TRAVELLING: Scott Vallance, Bernadette Robinson.

The lack of any B1 ladies and having only one B4 Lady, meant that we were immediately disadvantaged since we couldn’t collect any points for players in these categories. Our aim for the future needs to be that we should try to recruit and coach/develop players – not only in the shortage categories – but across the board in order to provide more competition for established players and to lift our standard generally. I would appeal to all our members to get involved in VIBE indoor competitions (Pairs and Triples) and to enter our outdoor Nationals.

As expected, the competition was a very hard-fought affair and, despite some disappointments, the England players generally acquitted themselves very well and there were some notable ‘scalps’ collected during the competition.

The England medallists were:

Amit Amin: B1 Men’s GOLD

Keith Brenton: B1 Men’s BRONZE

Sarah Marshall: B2 Ladies’ SILVER

Lynn Bourne: B2 Ladies’ BRONZE

Steve Simmons: B3 Men’s SILVER

Marjorie Convey: B3 ladies’ GOLD

Tessa Furzeman: B3 ladies’ BRONZE

Gareth Harwood: B4 Men’s GOLD

Liz Ward: B4 Ladies’ GOLD

It was with great pride that I received the overall team trophy (The Friendship Cup), on behalf of England, from the retiring Scottish Team Manager, David Thomas.

VIBE BOWLERS HELP D.B.E. WIN THE PARA-BOWLS OUTDOOR HOME NATIONS 2019

The Pairings of Alison Yearling (Directed by Sue Wherry) with Chris Turnbull (Directed by Mark Wherry) and Sarah Marshall (Directed by Linda Ralphs) and Steve Simmons (Directed by David Stott) acquitted themselves really well in the Mixed Pairs - and the VI Singles - to help secure ‘top spot’ for England in Wales in September. The ‘icing on the cake’ for Marshall & Simmons was an international ‘Hot Shot’ in their

Mixed Pairs game against the Welsh ……… And they have their certificates and badges to prove it!

ISRAEL 2019. TEAM MANAGER’S REPORT

A party totalling 22 people (including Northern Ireland’s Lisa Royle, her director/husband Steve and Scotland’s Eleanor Clark and director Doreen Strachan) assembled at Terminal 5, Heathrow at the unearthly time of 5am for our flight to Tel Aviv. After a pleasant journey, we arrived in our hotel in Netanya to enjoy a couple of days’ acclimatisation and a practice session at Ra’anaana Bowls Club.

Day one in the International Challenge, being played at Ramat Gan bowls club was a Triples competition which was decided by Group Winners. Despite Lisa Royle having to pull out of the last game, she, Ron Homer and Skip Mo Perry had done enough to secure the group winners’ medals. Well done to them - and well done also to Directors Steve, Moira and Laurence.

The Pairs and Singles competitions got underway on Tuesday and England took 19 points from the day’s games to lie second - behind hosts Israel by 5 points. South Africa followed in third place with 15 points. The performance of the day for England had to be the amazing fight-back and victory on the last end of our B3 pairing of Marjorie Convey (Directed by David Mears) and Adrian Mears (Directed by Kelvin Horriben) over the formidable Australian / Kiwi combination of Greg Kennedy and Sue Curran. Convey and Mears looked to be heading for a big defeat - trailing 0 - 9, with no apparent answer to their opponent’s relentless peppering of the jack. However, dogged determination and a resurgence in form saw the pair claw back to trail by one going into the last of the 14 ends and a magnificent 3 sealed their 15-13 victory.Elsewhere there were wins for B1 Amit Amin, B2 Ron Homer, B4s Liz Ward and Gareth Harwood in the Singles and the B2 pairing of Lynn Bourne and Ron Homer. The B1 Lisa Royle and Amit Amin pair held on for a draw in their game whilst our losers fought valiantly. Not a bad day at the office!

The unfortunate Mo Perry had to miss out on points on Wednesday morning as he had to visit a dentist to address a raging gum infection. How he managed to overcome the pain to play at all on Monday and Tuesday was testament to his commitment to the team. Wednesday was NOT a good day for England. Despite some heroic performances - which we will need to convert into winning performances - we won only a couple of games. Gareth Harwood continued his pursuit of the Gold medal in the B4 Men’s classification - although his points don’t count in the England team total because he’s here as an extra, ‘guest’ player. In fact, the National standings were not at all clear and we awaited the organisers’ verdict on these. There were so many players ‘guesting’ for other countries. Amit Amin (B1) had a

good win over John Monk of New Zealand and Lisa Royle fought out a great draw with Israel’s premier B1 man, Itzikh Baranes.

After Wednesday’s disappointing results, things went a little better for us on Thursday. In the morning session, Amit Amin (B1) had a very convincing 21-3 win over South Africa’s David Mpungose and Lisa Royle was awarded a 21-9 victory over Scotland’s Eleanor Clark after Eleanor had to concede through ill health (thanks to our own Kelvin Horriben and a local paramedic for coming to her aid). Adrian Mears and Marjorie Convey had another tough game in the B3 Pairs, overcoming an Israeli pair by just one shot thanks to a last-bowl effort by Adrian to nick the jack out for 2 on the last end. Our B4s had byes in the morning - allowing Mo Perry to have a roll-up to get back into the swing of things following a successful trip to the dentist the previous day. Lynn Bourne and Ron Homer went down by one in the B2 Pairs. In the afternoon, Ron Homer emerged victorious after fighting out an epic encounter with Israel’s Eitan Hirak by just 2 shots after Eitan tried to convert a drawing position into a winning one with his last bowl - only to catch the jack and push it to one of Ron’s waiting back woods. Meanwhile, Ron’s B2 partner - Lynn Bourne - went down heavily to her Israeli singles opponent. Marjorie Convey and Adrian Mears both lost to South African opposition in the Singles whilst Mo Perry and Liz Ward suffered the same fate in their B4 Pairs encounter. Gareth Harwood - England’s extra player - kept up his challenge for the B4 Men’s title when he overcame the much-fancied Roy Peters of South Africa. Gareth’s ‘crunch match’ comes on Friday afternoon when he faces New Zealand’s star, James Dunn. England continued to improve as we hoped for a last ‘big push’ for medals on the final days of competition.

Gareth Harwood won the B4 Men’s category with an accomplished performance against New Zealand’s James Dunn. Elsewhere there were wins for several individuals and a great performance in the B4 category with Mo Perry and Liz Ward winning their Pairs game in the morning and then both winning their Singles games in the afternoon. We had now amassed 53 points (by my reckoning) and lay in third place behind South Africa and the runaway leaders, Israel. We were all on an up-beat and we had several chances of medals on the last day of competition.

On Saturday morning, in the first game off the green at Ramat Gan,Adrian Mears took third place after beating Greg Kennedy (Aus) 21-7In addition to Adrian Mears' 3rd place in the B3 Men's competition, Gareth Harwood added 3rd place in the B4 Pairs with his New Zealand partner. Ron Homer finished third in the B2 Singles and he and Lynn Bourne had the Silver medal place in the B2 Pairs. Amit Amin and Northern Ireland's Lisa Royle were comprehensively beaten by the Israeli winners of the B1 Pairs and finished fourth (out of four). All was not over, however, and we had more medal hopes in the last session of the afternoon.

Before I get to the final results, a massive “Thank you” to Sarah Shapiro, her co-organisers and volunteer helpers from the Israeli Blind Bowlers’ Association - and the Ramat Gan club - for their warmth of welcome and hospitality throughout the tournament. They were all AMAZING! England finished in second place behind hosts Israel, with South Africa third – a mere half-point behind us! In addition to previously published results for England:Amit Amin won the Silver medal in the B1 Singles, Liz Ward took third place in the B4 Ladies and Mo Perry - third place in the B4 Men’s

We had a relaxing/sightseeing day to The Dead Sea or Jerusalem on Sunday before setting off for home at mid-day on Monday.

A great tournament and wonderful experience for the England team. Lessons have been learned in preparation for the IBBA World Championships at Tweed Heads BC, New South Wales, Australia in March 2021.

23rd May 2019

ASSISTANT TEAM MANAGERDue to Gail Hepworth’s ill-health, the VIBE committee has recently made the difficult, precautionary, decision to seek an interim Assistant Team Manager to serve until after the World Blind Bowls Championships in March 2021.

This position requires effective communication and good organisational skills - along with the ability to undertake responsibilities delegated by the Team Manager. The post holder will, preferably, be an experienced bowler/director, as they may be required to be on the green with a VI bowler in the event of anything untoward happening to the allocated director. The appointed person will be expected to sign, and abide by, the code of conduct. Finally, it is expected that you will be fit enough to support the team at international competitions for several days at any one time.

The closing date for expressions of interest is 29 November and should be submitted to David Mears, Chairman. Applicants should be prepared to be interviewed shortly afterwards.

We all wish Gail the very best as she receives treatment and hope she makes a full recovery.
