Chairman’s Words by Councillor Annie Makepeace, Chairman of

Wincham Parish Council

Thanks to all the kind people who are working to improve our village by litter-picking. Our youngest volunteer is Alex Cenac aged 7. He helps us by looking after the area around his home, and then (with a parent) goes a little bit further. He could do with your help. We have put in a bid for funds to improve the equipment on Chapel Street field, and residents are working on ways of raising £1500 to support this. Thank you! If you have any ideas or would like to help, please talk to Clare and Lillian c/o 12 Chapel Street. The owners of the Black Greyhound have still to decide what they will do there. I’ve been in constant contact but nothing definite is forthcoming. We can only wait for their decision and keep on nudging them so they don’t forget us. The Linnards Lane Playing Field has been awarded “Highly Commended” by the County Playing Fields Association. The new play area has proved very popular and is being well-used. I understand the story-telling chair is magic, and endows those who use it with eloquence and imagination. If anyone has created a story to tell to children, send it in to me. We’ll have a story-telling event and maybe yours can be illustrated and included in a collection, “Tales from the Magic Chair”. Thanks to all who have attended our recent Parish Council meetings and told us what they want to happen in our village. We will do our best for you. Annie

The Wincham War Memorial

By Helen Green

Over the summer, I have continued with my research into the men

from Wincham who died in both the First World War and the Second

World War. There is a total of twenty three men who died during

the First World War and four who were killed during the Second

World War. These men were all born and grew up in Wincham or

lived here for many years.

As well as those who died, many men returned safely although some

The grave of Thomas Buckley of them would have been wounded. There were some men from

Wincham who were awarded medals for gallantry and there were happy occasions in the

village when a soldier returned home on leave to marry.

One man whose name will appear on the Memorial is Edward Cook. Although born in Bakewell

in Derbyshire, Edward lived in Wincham for many years. He worked as a gardener for Mrs

Egerton-Warburton at Arley Hall and was a chorister at Arley chapel. He would probably have

travelled to work on his bicycle from his home in Timperley Cottages in Wincham Lane. He

married Ellen Riley at St Paul's Church, Marston in 1911 and they had two children. Edward

enlisted in the Cheshire Regiment in December 1914 at their recruiting office in Northwich and

he joined the 12th Battalion and later transferred to the 9th Battalion. After training in

England, Edward went on active service in France in August 1915. He remained on active

service until 1918, when he was seriously injured. He was initially treated at a hospital in

France and was then transferred to a military hospital in England. Edward died of his wounds

on 25th May 1918. He was buried in the churchyard of St Mary's Church, Great Budworth with

full military honours. His grave is marked with a stone of the Commonwealth War Graves

Commission.

Another soldier from Wincham who is buried locally is Private

Thomas Buckley of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. Thomas was

killed on 28th May 1942. He is buried in St Helen's Churchyard,

where his grave is still carefully tended. Again, this grave is marked

by stone of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Thomas

was the son of Joseph and Margaret Buckley and the younger

brother of James Buckley, who will also be on the Wincham War

Memorial. They lived in Hall Lane. Thomas married Eileen Moore

at St Helen's Church in Northwich in 1938.

I will be publishing a book so that the stories of all these men can Lance Corporal Edward Cook

be more widely known. It is the very least they deserve.

Broadband in Wincham

This is a statement issued by the Connecting Cheshire Partnership:

The ongoing commercial roll-out of fibre broadband is expected to reach around 80% of premises in

Cheshire; 16% coverage will be derived from the Connecting Cheshire project, this will specifically

address an intervention area of some 93,000, primarily rural premises across Cheshire, that are not

commercially viable for providers to service without subsidy. Within this we have estimated we will be

able to reach over 80,000 premises with a fibre service.

Within the Wincham Parish Council boundary, the Chapel Street area is connected via the Northwich

exchange. Most of the properties here are or will be connected via the commercial roll-out of fibre

broadband. Whilst Connecting Cheshire has no information about the commercial deployment, residents

can speak to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) of their choice to see if fibre is available to them.

For properties around the northern part of the parish connected via the Pickmere exchange, this is part

of the Connecting Cheshire programme. Properties in this area should expect to see fibre broadband

available between October this year and the end of March 2015. Once fibre is live in this area, residents

here will be able to contact an ISP to discuss the options to upgrade to a fibre package.

The fibre broadband deployment maps of Cheshire are available at www.connectingcheshire.org.uk

along with lots of frequently asked questions and news from the project.

Editor’s note: we understand that fibre broadband is now expected before Christmas in the Church Street

area. Initially it will probably only be available only through BT Infinity.

Gonzo Moose is an exuberant, physical theatre company who throw themselves wholeheartedly into this madcap adventure of a young Charles Dickens, the excellent Mark Conway, as a rookie reporter on the Morning Chronicle. He is anxious to report on the gossip and scandal rather than just gathering the facts and is keen to uncover the corruption in the law courts whose lawyers are only there for their expenses—hilarious echoes of the Leveson enquiry. Neil Haigh and Emily Murphy play countless characters including the comical housekeeper Agatha and the benevolent Lord Rosebury. The two undertakers plying for trade is hysterical as they compete with each other offering discounts, loyalty cards and two-for-one offers. The plot is plain daft but performed with such pace and commitment with so many split second costume changes that you have to admire the dexterity and skill of the cast as yet other characters are created, such as Ratchet and Screw the body snatchers. The humour is very Pythonesque, tongue-in-cheek and laugh-out-loud funny with some very effective puppetry. The cast appear to be revelling in their consummate storytelling with great audience rapport. Abigail Anderson’s inspired direction ensures that What the Dickens is a highly entertaining seasonal evening and the perfect alternative to the traditional pantomime.

BE PART OF SOMETHING GREAT

Dear old Violet shares her rented home with three impoverished elderly ladies. Lottie escapes reality by writing lurid detective novels, Marge tries every evening class on offer, Doris drowns her sorrows. When Violet dies, the others keep it secret to hang on to her pension and rent-book. When Violet’s grand-daughter comes to visit, what lengths will they go to in order to keep their genteel home and income? A witty and entertaining mix of garibaldis and guns, shoplifting and operatic parrots and “Vanda Lane with thighs like polished alabaster, high firm breasts” and who never mislays her teeth or drops ice-cream down her skirt. Directed by Annie Makepeace, with assistance from other Wincham folks, Tracey Oultram and Ian Parr, this is only ten minutes away. The same team has just won the Cheshire Theatre Guild adjudicators' award for their last show, "Glorious".

Down Our Way by Mrs Clare Dockney, Chapel Street Resident

The “Old Hole” is a name that older residents will know. It ran across where the country park now is. It was the only road from Northwich to Wincham and used to have little cottages and, I think, a school. Unfortunately, all sank with the mine workings underneath, long before the “New Warrington Road” was laid. Salt was the main industry in Wincham and Lower Marston. Most of the cottages in Chapel Street were homes for the salt workers. In Wincham Lane, we had “British Salt Works” and in Marston there was “The Lion Salt Works”, formerly owned by the Thompson family. This is now being

restored as a tourist attraction as it is the only brine pan salt works left. Opposite the Lion Salt Works is a big shed where canal boats were loaded, before travelling down to the Anderton Boat Lift and then onto the River Weaver. Salt was also moved by rail. A rail line ran along where the Northwich Road is now and the rails crossed Chapel Street, ran at the side of Providence House to Marston. The very last house at the bottom of Chapel Street was known as “The Gatehouse”. It was the job of the man who lived there to close the rail gates across Chapel Street as the train came through. I believe the track was still in the road until about 1868.

Travel

Travel to me means holidays, the chance to get away And stay somewhere else for a few days. A town, a city, a village or elsewhere you may envisage To visit family or friends - on you the choice depends. The atmosphere of a European city, With impressive buildings and those that there are pretty, The river through the town and the history that will make you frown, Foreign people’s conversations and their points of view And then after some consideration, you think, Yes, that’s true. With travel, your mind is able to unravel; The problems that you have are diminished By distance and do not present themselves with such persistence. Travel often means holidays, That is true. Yet what holidays expose is often more Than scenery and skies of blue.

Introducing ‘Witton Albion in the Community’…

‘Witton Albion in the Community’ is the community arm of Witton Albion Football Club: here to support and work alongside local schools, businesses, charities as well as the people of Northwich and surrounding areas. We are currently working towards reaching the status of being a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO). That now means that in the very near future, Witton Albion in the Community will become a central hub for vast amounts of activity going on locally. As the leading football club in the town, Witton Albion is aware of the responsibility it holds for making a positive impact in Northwich and surrounding areas. That is where ‘Witton Albion in the Community’ comes in. Many exciting initiatives are planned to be introduced, ranging across the following platforms of: • Sport • Education • Health • Inclusion

One of the first initiatives for the coming season is the ‘Kids Go Free’ season ticket scheme. This allows children aged 15 and under the opportunity to receive a season ticket for all Witton Albion home games in the league – COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE! Since the launch, over 100 children have signed up so far and we still have 5,000 invite letters to go out to EVERY school in the area. There are many exiting partnerships and initiatives soon to be announced and anyone who wants to engage with what we do or would like our assistance with their existing efforts can contact Project

Manager Alex Titchiner via email at: [email protected]

Page 12: Autumn 2014 - winchamvillage.co.uk Word 2014 11.pdf · Cransley School in Great Budworth have reported that they will hold an Open Afternoon on Wednesday 14

Just over twelve months ago 1874 NORTHWICH FC became the newest

football club in the country by Brian Edge

Formed because the members of the then Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust

voted overwhelming to form a new fans-run, democratic operated and

transparent club, because their previous club ceased to provide them with the

excitement and confidence that had once been the norm.

Of course the new club had to find a ground to play at and following very good

discussions with Winsford United FC an agreement was reached to play at their Barton Stadium. Whilst

a ground in Northwich would have been preferred it was not to be and 1874 are very grateful to everyone

at Winsford United who have been so helpful and supportive.

In their first season 1874 finished joint second in the North West Counties Football League First division

and narrowly missed out on promotion on goal difference but after another team resigned from the

League 1874 were asked to step up and take their place which they did and so in August this year they

started their second season but this time in the NWCFL Premier Division.

After 17 games this season they sit in a healthy third position in the league.

Attendances at 1874’s home and away games are the best in the league and have amazed everybody. It is

believed that one of the reasons that people attend their games is because of the friendliness and openness

of all that they do and are trying to do. People attend games and leave afterwards with smiles on their

faces.

New supporters are always welcome and with very

reasonable admission charges it is hoped that the crowds will

increase even more over the next few months.

Adults pay £5

Concessions (pensioners and under 17’s) pay £3

Under 12’s are admitted FREE OF CHARGE
