2012

Welcome to the 2012 autumn and Dance Week edition of aDm,

There is a lot to enjoy as Dance Week rolls out around the country in May with opportunities to participate as a dancer and lots of productions to see.

Right now is the best time to see the wonderful Life in Movement screening at the Palace Nova in Adelaide. An Australian cinema release for a dance film made in South Australia is a very rare thing. Gain an insight into the creative life of Tanja Liedtke and her dedicated group of collaborators by seeing Closer Productions’ moving documentary on the big screen this week.

Adelaide Festival Centre and One Point 618 are presenting Katrina Lazaroff’s Involuntary during Dance Week in the Space Theatre from 1-5 May. This work investigates the comic and tragic potential of our contemporary obsession with technology. No password is required!

Dianne Reid is curating a screening of short dance films made in South Australia, for Dance Week as part of the Goolwa Regional Centre for Culture, playing at the Signal Point Gallery on 28-29 April and 5-6 May.

The Centenary Hall in Goolwa is now a fully upgraded theatre venue thanks to the Country Arts SA Regional Centre for Culture program. The renovated Centenary Hall is hosting a Dance Showcase during Dance Week, featuring regionally created dance, followed by the Australian Dance Theatre on Sunday 6 May at 2pm. Check it out and keep the Centenary Hall in mind as a dance venue.

Ausdance SA is presenting a free multicultural Dance Week performance under the Gawler Place canopy in Rundle Mall on Friday 11 May supported by the Adelaide City Council. Groups performing include Fresh Fools, Body Temple Dance Company, Reshman, Precizion and Steven Kelly International Dance Studio. There are times available for more acts, so if you have a piece that is suited to outdoor performance, please contact [email protected] to book a time for your group.

Leigh Warren and Dancers present Pari Passu … touch in the Space Theatre from 17-26 May. Pari Passu … touch is a very creative melding of multi-media, light, contact and music not to be missed! The Australian Ballet celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and the Friends of the Australian Ballet in South Australia are celebrating their 20th anniversary. Join the Friends for a Symposium Dancing with Attitude on Sunday 29 April at 2pm and book now to see Romeo and Juliet at the Festival Theatre from 25-30 May.

Ausdance SA has received $50,000 Artform Development funding from the Dance Board of the Australia Council to enhance development of pathways for freelance dancers, taking part in Choreolab. Choreolab Digital provides a series of seminars and workshops leading up to a screening in the Mercury Cinema on Wednesday 20 June. Following the screening an industry panel will select one of the nominated films to receive a $15,000 Choreolab Digital Research and Development residency. For more information about Choreolab Digital please see to page 11 or visit the programs section of the Ausdance SA website www.ausdancesa.org.au.

Join us for Ausdance SA Annual General Meeting to be held in the Board room at the Adelaide College of the Arts in Light Square, on Monday 30 April, from 6-7pm. The AGM is an opportunity to meet the board, receive a copy of the Annual Report and to learn more about Ausdance SA activities. Light refreshments will be served following the meeting.

LWDupdate

Leigh Warren & Dancers set to premiere a brand new work, Pari Passu…touch

A whirlwind dance quartet in quadraphonic sound. Movement transformed into light, performers pushed to the edge of exhaustion. A dance show to leave you breathless. Pari Passu - on equal footing.

The subject of Pari Passu is touch. “Touch is a vital component of everyone’s day to day life, not just a dancer’s. Audiences can expect to encounter three visually exhilarating yet vastly different realms through touch - light, music and movement,” Leigh says. “The use of the lucid touch screens and flowing light directed by each dancer provides audiences with a unique opportunity to see the wonderful flow lines dancers make in the air and on the ground.”

Company dancer Adam Synnott will be taking on a different role for this latest production. Also an acclaimed sound designer and media artist, Adam has been working with Leigh and Set Designer Mary Moore to deliver all the multi media and music components for Pari Passu.

A big welcome to Timothy Farrar who joins us for Pari Passu…touch.Timothy has worked with The Australian Ballet and Sydney Dance Company while also pursuing an interest in filmmaking. He has created several short dance films and recently completed studies at AFTRS in Sydney.

Australian Dance Theatreupdate

We're very happy to announce our new Executive Director, Julianne Pierce, has now joined ADT. Julianne, who is originally from Adelaide, has been in the UK for the last five years heading-up interactive artists' company Blast Theory. Julianne joins the company at an exciting time, as we venture toward our 50th anniversary in 2015.

We have just held our 2012 Secondment Week at ADT. The thirty excited dance students from Australia and around the world took daily technique classes, basic tumbling training and learnt current company repertoire taught by the ADT dancers. They also took part in a daily forum about industry related topics such as company life, auditions, training, nutrition and marketing. The challenge was met with excitement and energy and a rewarding week was enjoyed by all secondment students!

There is lots happening at ADT over the next two months!

On 27 April we will hold our second Rough Draft event (details below). Then on 6 May we’re performing in Goolwa at the 2012 Dance Week Showcase, and also at the Sight for All Ballet Brunch. We're then off to Sydney presenting an exclusive season of Be Your Self from 31 May - 3 June, at Sydney Theatre, and in June we head to Melbourne to perform as part of The Australian Ballet's 50th anniversary gala Let's Dance.

Next year is also going to be an incredible year for ADT - the dancers will jet off to Europe in January 2013 for a three-month tour of ADT's latest work Proximity. Plus, we have just announced a national tour of G, to be held in in May-June 2013 further details available shortly.

After a successful inaugural event held in November 2011, Rough Draft is back and will feature first stage developments by artists including Scott Ewen, Kimball Wong, Ross Ganf, Amber Haines, Kyle Page, Alana West, David Paul Jobling, Sarah Neville, and Petra Szabo. Plus Aidan Munn and the ADT dancers will be presenting a structured improvisation.

The foyer bar will be open for business and entry is by donation - suggested donations are $20 adults and $10 concession.

Rough Draft is supported by Australia Council, Arts SA, and Shingleback Wine (McLaren Vale).

Restless update

PORT MORESBY VISITRestless Dance Theatre completed a short tour to Port Moresby PNG during the second week in March. The Company visited as a major attraction during Australia Week organised by the Australian High Commission. The Company presented two performances of High Voltage a short work directed by Lorcan Hopper. High Voltage was developed as part of the program: Debut 3 – the dancers direct and was first performed in November last year at the Restless Studio. The Company is delighted that it was able to present a work directed by a young person with a disability in an international context. Lorcan worked closely with Mentor Larissa McGowan in the making of High Voltage and he describes the work as being about: electricity and power sources; conducting and transferring natural and un-natural energy; how it affects us, how we control it and what comes from having it and losing it. This is the third work that Lorcan has directed as part of the Debut series of programs.

Debut 3 featured a collaboration with the Adelaide College for the Arts with the first year dance students joining the Restless Youth Ensemble to make up the casts of three new short works. There were two AC Arts students who were in High Voltage and who came with the Company to PNG. Lisa Heaven from AC Arts also joined the touring party and provided valuable support. The performances were very well received and Lorcan once again proved himself to be an excellent ambassador for disability arts. The dancers joined Restless Artistic Director Philip Channells who conducted two workshops with participants at two local disability organisations: Cheshire disAbility Services and the Red Cross Special Education Resource Centre. The kids at these centres were blown away to have some high quality dance workshops and they and the staff were as warm and friendly to the Restless party as everyone else was throughout the trip. Restless would like to thank the Australian High Commission, AusAid, Arts SA, the Macquarie Foundation and Mr Geoff Day for making the tour possible.

SECOND NATURERestless has recently completed a Creative Development of Second Nature the next Touring Company work for future production. Second Nature is being directed by guest director Dean Walsh from Sydney. Dean is currently on a Dance Board Fellowship. Second Nature investigates the notions of adaptation, mutation and the inhabitation of our natural environment. Inspired by the dancer’s continual need to adapt to their external environment, their physical mutations and their constantly enquiring minds, this new work for the Touring Company taps into a gold mine of diverse and instinctual choices made within the performers unique physical ability.

HOWLING LIKE A WOLFThe Restless Youth Ensemble production for 2012 is: Howling Like a Wolf. This marks the directorial debut of Zoë Barry who is very familiar to Restless audiences having worked a lot with the company as composer/musician. Zoë will be supported by dramaturg Kate Sulan from Rawcus Theatre in Melbourne. Howling Like a Wolf is about the chaos of human interaction and how we prepare for it. The production will be presented at the Queens Theatre in August.

RESTLESS CENTRAL WORKSHOPSRestless Dance Theatre presents a series of exciting workshops in movement and dance for young people aged between 15 - 26, with and without a disability. No experience is necessary. Make new friends whilst making movement to music and playing games in a safe and creative environment where your ideas become dance. No experience is necessary just the desire take part. Led by highly experienced and motivating tutors with and without a disability, in an accessible space, Restless Central workshops are one and a half hours of imaginative fun.

Workshop Series: 19 April - 19 Mayat the Iris Cinema, Mercury Cinema & Ausdance SA

Film Screening: Wednesday 20 June 7:30pm at the Mercury Cinema

This year Choreolab will be presented in a new format with the premiere of Choreolab Digital, providing a platform for collaborative dance on screen work.

Through a series of seminars and workshops Choreolab Digital will engage freelance dancers, filmmakers and musicians, with experienced guest facilitators to work on the essentials of dance for the screen. Workshops will then follow for those participants committed to creating a short video for Choreolab Digital. Upon completion of the workshop series, dancers, filmmakers and musicians will collaborate to create their own work of approximately 3 to 5 minutes in duration for screening on Wednesday 20 June at Choreolab Digital. One group of self-nominated artists will then be chosen by a panel, to receive the additional benefit of receiving $15,000 for an intensive Choreolab Digital Residency.

All nominated video works in the 20 June Choreolab Digital screening will be eligible for the $15,000 Choreolab Digital Residency (made possible through an Artform Development grant from the Dance Board of the Australia Council) selected by a panel of industry representatives. Artists wishing to nominate for the $15,000 residency must include a budget and artistic rationale with their application form (given out at the 19 April seminar) showing how they would utilize the $15,000 to further develop their project. Further details on the Choreolab Digital Residency will be given at the 19 April seminar at the Iris Cinema.

The tour was assisted by the South Australian Government through Carclew Youth Arts Board. A write up on the experience will feature in our next aDm.

The second delivery of the Ausdance skill set for Teaching Dance has begun. The 16 participants range in dance and teaching backgrounds including Flamenco, Ballet, Hip Hop, Burlesque, Belly dance, Latin, primary and high school teachers, private studio teachers and owners plus freelance dance teachers. ‘Be Active’ Port Pirie is planning to hold a regional delivery of the skill set over 3-5 weekend intensives over term 3 and 4. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Australian Ballet, Graeme Murphy’s tragic masterpiece Romeo & Juliet tours to Adelaide in 2012.

Following its 2011 world premiere, Graeme Murphy’s Romeo & Juliet is set to sweep audiences off their feet across Australia with seasons in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

Experience what The Daily Telegraph called “a game-changing ballet that leaves you begging for more”.

With his trademark dramatic style, Murphy has transformed the world’s most famous love story into something entirely new yet timeless. Murphy’s heart-soaring choreography delves to the emotional core of Shakespeare’s tragic tale and doesn’t hold back.

The artistic director of The Australian Ballet, David McAllister, says the production is pure enchantment on stage. “A great big, dramatic story ballet, Romeo & Juliet is a lavish production that takes audiences on an unforgettable journey. Having blown audiences away in Melbourne and Sydney, we can’t wait to share Murphy’s magic with Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth in our 50th anniversary year. It will also be a special joy for some of our finest dancers to perform to their home town crowds,” said McAllister.

The Australian Ballet’s 50th anniversary is a milestone all Australians can be proud of. Presenting up to 180 performances and over 500 education events each year, the company is one of the world’s most prolific and progressive arts organisations. In 2012, The Australian Ballet will reach many corners of Australia through extensive national and regional touring, and by visiting more schools nationwide with the popular Out There program.

About the production: The ever-imaginative Murphy has shaped a whole new world for the famous star-crossed lovers. The central characters remain – the passionate but ill-advised Romeo, innocent and wilful Juliet, the overbearing families of Capulet and Montague, alongside fiery Mercutio, handsome Paris and deadly Tybalt.

But the action is not restricted to fair Verona. This book-to-ballet adaptation refuses to be defined by a particular era – a nod to the story’s global themes of love, war, greed and factionalism.

If Murphy’s masterful storytelling isn’t enough, costumes by celebrated fashion designer Akira Isogawa will also delight. With over 300 pieces - comprised of 5,000 metres of assorted fabrics, from saris to snake leather, 1,000 Swarovski crystals, 2,000 sequins and 580 pairs of pointe shoes - the scale of this opulent production becomes clear.

Virtual loss of mind flexed in captivating Involuntary work. With no signs of the advanced technology glut slowing down, emerging South Australian dance theatre and education company, One Point 618 encourages audiences to laugh at the ‘automatic’ and ‘unconscious’ characteristics of 21st Century behaviour in world premiere production, Involuntary at the Space Theatre from 1 to 5 May.

Involuntary challenges the intense pressure to conform to the evolution of the modern world. While there are lots of pluses with technology at our fingertips, Involuntary investigates the flipside of evolution’s acceler-ated pace and the coercion that clouds our decision making. Watch this company of stunning dancers as they interpret the impact, the emotion and the inherent comedy of technological change.

Directed and choreographed by Katrina Lazaroff, Involuntary looks at how society is preoccupied by the pressures of life, consumerism and regulation. The work aims to stimulate audiences to question their values by proposing lighthearted and confronting views of our engagement with reality. Involuntary boasts a formidable ensemble of exceptional arts professionals including seasoned dancers Tim Rodgers, Ninian Donald, Veronica Shum and Jessica Statton, video and lighting by Nic Mollison, sound design by Sascha Budimski and a collaborative set design effort from Nic Mollison, Richard Seidel and Katrina Lazaroff.

South Australia’s One Point 618, founded by Katrina Lazaroff, fosters creativity and artistic excellence in dance and education. Working within the genres of contemporary dance, theatre, popular dance styles, music, design and technology, the company delivers innovative and accessible performances for all ages. The company previously presented the stunning dance work Pomona Road at Adelaide Festival Centre, which received critical acclaim.

Director and Choreographer Katrina Lazaroff says “Automatic, without conscious control, against one’s will, reactive – these all come to mind when I think Involuntary. Through humour and irony the work will look at how we are all prone to being persuaded to make choices we do not believe in or understand. We are all becoming so busy by the pressures of life, we often avoid questioning the implications of our social behaviour.” Involuntary was developed through Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSPACE program, which supports the development and presentation of the very best contemporary performance by independent artists.

Adelaide Festival Centre CEO and Artistic Director Douglas Gautier says “Involuntary is yet another example of Katrina’s exceptional abilities to bring together dynamic performers in exciting choreography, married with the effective execution of set, lighting and sound to delve into topical matters,” “We are extremely fortunate to have someone as talented as Katrina remain an integral part of SA’s dance and education community. Her commit-ment to consistently delivering high qualities of innovative, contemporary and relevant works, resonates with audiences on many levels,” he says.

In addition to the performances, Adelaide Festival Centre’s GreenRoom youth arts membership program in partnership with centrED presents a Dance Masterclass with Director and Choreographer Katrina Lazaroff on Wednesday 2 May, 1- 3pm, Space Theatre. in the middle of the night. The dance world had lost Tanja’s voice before she had told her full story. Tanja’s short

life gives an inspiring insight into living creatively. As her work tours internationally, her collaborators reveal their

memories and process their grief over her sudden death, while Tanja continues to inspire through previously

unseen interviews and footage of her compelling process.

Country Arts SANatalie Weir & Expressions Dance Company presents R&J

R&JPresented by Country Arts SA in association with Natalie Weir & Expressions Dance Company When: 2 - 8 May South Australian Country TourWhere: Chaffey Theatre Renmark, Wednesday 2 May 8pmWhere: Hopgood Theatre Noarlunga, Friday 4 May 8pm* (good venue for Adelaide audiences!) Where: Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre, Mt Gambier, Tuesday 8 May 8pmBookings: www.countryarts.com.au

R&J, the latest work from internationally acclaimed and multi awarding winning Artistic Director, Natalie Weir, will premiere to Adelaide audiences at the Hopgood Theatre this May.

Following her highly acclaimed 2010 production, Where the Heart is, Natalie Weir creates a contemporary performance at its most bold and powerful.

Set across three acts of Valley, Verona and Vintage, R&J transports audiences across three different eras to tell Shakespeare’s classic tale. From the pulsing nightspots of Fortitude Valley to the romance of a secret wedding in Verona and culminating in a Vintage version of suburban bliss, R&J reinforces the notion that love, no matter what age you are, is eternal and its power everlasting.

R&J turns the classic story of Romeo and Juliet on its head, cutting to the essence of what is real, human and inevitable. Love plays a major role in all our lives, but as Shakespeare knew too well, does not always guarantee a fairytale ending.

Mr Rob Stobbe Chief Executive Officer of Country Arts SA’s Season 2012 Principal Partner ETSA Utilities says that audiences will enjoy the presentation of this re-worked Shakespearian classic.

“We are extremely pleased that audiences will see the South Australian premiere of R&J through our partnership with Country Arts SA. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the company Expressions, who have combined their world class dancers with a classic narrative in a story that transcends generations”.

Featuring a cast of Expressions best dancers and a score by Topology’s John Babbage, R&J will make you rethink this classic tale.

In Landscape Architecture there is an “in between” space that a site scheduled for design and construction must inhabit. It no longer resembles its former purpose but has not yet been transformed into its new reality. Is it just a mound of dirt? How can one make this moment, this seemingly unimportant and transitional moment into something beautiful, engaging and inter-esting, something more than a site-in-waiting? These are the concepts that Billie Cook, independent dance artist based at HQ studios in Richmond, and Adelaide Landscape Architecture firm Taylor Cullity Lethlean have set out to explore in this mixed discipline project, “Mound of Dirt”. In essence, it is performance art in architecture; dance developed and performed on a building site, exploring the nature of re-creating, transforming and occupying space.

For Billie, recyclability is not just a term that informs the work but one that she uses as a rule to guide her practice. The idea of recyclability is carried throughout the wider aim of the project, not only in the transfor-mation & “re-use” of the space, but also in the dance practice that is developed in the studio. Stage one of the project involved bringing dance artist and performer Gabrielle Nankivell on board to explore the concept of ballon (the French term describing the quality of jumping or elevation) and to facilitate and guide Billie’s studio practice. They were surprised to find that using hands and bodies actively in floor-work became the natural starting point to their work together; that in order to jump, leap and spring from the ground, one first needed to get familiar with it. Concepts, movement phrases and ideas developed here are also recycled, brought back rather than discarded, reinforcing the themes that will be explored in a broader sense when the movement is transported to a new landscape.

This is the point where real-world practicalities and safety concerns cross over into the artist’s realm. A dancer entering what is in effect, a building site, raises health and environmental concerns. Applications must be lodged and approvals sought. It’s a time consuming process that involves OH & S issues such as soil testing and negotiation with building industry regulators. The project’s continuation at a location designated for development this month depends on these approvals.

In the meantime Billie continues to develop the concept. Her intention is to workshop practical ideas that become part of the building site, that comment on & interact with the ebb and flow of the creation of a new space. The physical dirt or soil is one aspect of particular interest. While dirt has a natural relationship with burial, interment and death, Billie prefers to consider it in the context of ballon; that dirt is from where life “springs”, from the ground up.
