Hyundai’s Sonata be-gan life in 1985 as a car built solely for use within Korea. It came to North America for the first time in 1988 as a second-generation mid-size, with an Italian design by Giorgetto Giugario.

Following a refreshening in 1991, Sonata replaced the Stellar as the core family se-dan in the Hyundai line-up.

Now in its sixth gen-eration, re-focused with improved fuel economy, Hyundai’s new “fluidic sculpture” design, increased performance and upgraded comfort and tech features, Sonata has also elevated its attention to safety utilizing hot-stamped ultra high-strength steel in its foun-dation and body, antilock brakes, traction control, stability control, front seat side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active front head re-straints.

In fact, Sonata has stepped up its protection design so well that in Institute for Highway Safety crash tests, the vehicle was awarded a “Top Safety Pick” honor, scoring high in frontal off-set and side-impact crash tests, rear impact tests and the new roof crush test.

Confident architecturePresented in the regular

format as well as a lithium polymer battery-powered Hybrid version this year, with a wagon planned for 2012, the new Sonata ar-chitecture is striking. Com-pletely redesigned, Sonata stands 189.8 inches long, 72.2 inches wide and 57.9 inches high on a 110-inch wheelbase.

The mid-size is present-ed with confident lines that fluidly move from the front fender across slanted, con-toured headlights to the rear taillights. The chrome-plated rounded, trapezoi-dal front grille greets you

with bold bars, the Hyundai badge and an effect that ap-pears to be in motion.

A chrome strip tracking from the corner of the head-light’s “eye” corner under the side windows and to the rear side window “eye” cor-ner is innovative and atten-tion-grabbing.

The aggressive new look culminates with sharply slanted rear roofline and flat tail. This new construction profile produces a very ef-fective and solid-for-the-class 0.28 coefficient of drag.

Light and fuel-efficientFrom a power perspective,

the light, 3191-lb. Sonata doesn’t need a big-block to adequately perform. How-ever, Hyundai retired the V-6 option that was offered in the previous generation and opts for better fuel economy by installing a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine.

Saving about 130 lbs. by going with the direct-in-jected-4, my test Sonata, mated to a 6-speed auto-matic transmission (it is also packaged with a 5-speed manual) was EPA rated at a class-leading (non-Hy-brid) 22mpg in the city and 35mpg on the interstate (the 5-speed will add 2 mpg in the city and offers the same economy on the highway). My week of mixed-use test-ing yielded a noteworthy av-erage of 29.1mpg.

Performance was adequate thanks to the setup’s 198 hp and 184 lbs-ft of torque and I was able to put down a zero to 60mph sprint in 7.7 sec-onds with a best quarter-

mile of 15.8.While the engine was loud

and produced in-cabin vi-bration and sound, and oth-er road noise made its way into the cabin, the ride was smooth, the handling true and the overall experience was relatively luxurious.

Comfortable rideSuspension is meant more

for passengers than the driv-er, as some drivers like the feel of road nuances, and the Sonata ride was pampering to the point of being a trifle floaty, as the MacPherson struts with gas-charged hy-draulic twin tube shock ab-sorbers and stabilizer bar up front and the independent multi-link rear design with coil springs, gas-charged hydraulic twin tube shock absorbers and stabilizer bar take most irregularities out of the road surfaces.

Power-assisted venti-

lated disc brakes, 4-wheel ABS with 4 channels, 4 sen-sors and electronic brake force distribution provide sure footing and stopping, and steering is attentive at slow speeds but is boatlike in quick maneuvers at high speed.

Acceleration in pass-ing gear is good, but a pedal mash shows imprecise shift-points and some over-rev.

Lavish cabinIn the cabin, the feeling

is one of lavishness, with a sleek design, easy-to-read instrumentation, a trendy center stack of controls (though it is positioned a bit close and tight to the driv-er’s right knee), blue back-lighting and user-friendly devices.

Tight on rear headroom, due to the roof slope, the Sonata’s interior is still comfortable, measuring 40

inches of front head room with 37.8 in the second row; 45.5 inches of front leg room with 34.6 inches in row two and shoulder room of 57.9 up front and 56.7 behind.

Upmarket standard ame-nities include proximity en-try with push button start, sport seats with leather bolsters and cloth inserts, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, XM Satellite Radio™, iPod®/USB inputs, segment-first HD Radio Technology™ with Multicasting, seg-ment-first standard Blue-tooth® with phonebook download , air-condition-ing, cruise control, full power accessories, heated sideview mirrors, tilt-and-telescoping steering column, trip computer, a 60/40-split rear seatback, a six-speaker stereo (with CD/MP3 play-er) and 16-inch wheels.

The 2011 Hyundai Sonata

is available in several pack-ages from Spartan to packed. My test SE, with a naviga-tion and sunroof package (power sunroof with tilt and slide,

Navi system with high-resolution touchscreen dis-play, Dimension premium speakers, subwoofer/exter-nal amplifier), is priced at $25,195 plus $720 freight, tax and license. (The Base SE is $22,595, and the base GLS trim starts at $19,195).

Hyundai has come a long way … and it has arrived.

Sonata boasts fluid lines and luxury

Remember the old saying, “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em”?

Officials at German auto-maker Volkswagen may be taking it to heart at long last.

Perhaps more than any previous VW Jetta, the re-designed-for-2011 five-passenger sedan is built for American tastes.

It’s a bigger car with a big-ger back seat for the kind of legroom that Americans de-mand, new sheet metal that makes the car look more upscale than before, and a lower starting retail price that puts the Jetta closer to top-selling compact sedans like the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic.

In fact, the new Jetta’s rear-seat legroom of 38.1 inches is not only greater than the 34.6 inches in the back seat of the Civic, it sur-passes the 37.2 inches in the back seat of the mid-size Honda Accord sedan. Over-all, the Jetta is nearly 2.9 inches longer than its pre-decessor.

The base 2011 Jetta with front-wheel drive carries a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price, in-cluding destination charge, of $16,765 with manual transmission and 115-horse-power, 2-liter, four-cylinder engine.

With automatic transmis-sion, the lowest-priced 2011 Jetta starts at $17,865.

These prices are still high-er, by at least $360, than the major 2010 competitors in the segment. But the base model price tags are a long way from the starting retail price of more than $19,000 for last year’s model, which came with a bigger, more powerful base engine.

The new exterior styling of the 2011 Jetta makes the

car appear a bit more main-stream. But it also looks more upscale and is a wel-come change from the pre-vious Jetta styling; it had grown old.

Inside, the changes bring mixed results. The dash-board plastic looks more utilitarian than last year’s Jetta. But controls and gauges are still attractively arranged.

There’s a new radio face-plate that draws attention and provides better visibil-ity to the display

This also is the first year that the Jetta is available with push-button start as an option.

VW’s Intelligent Crash Response System, that au-tomatically turns off the fuel pump, turns on emergency flashers and unlocks the doors after air bags are de-ployed in a crash, is standard and is on the Jetta for the first time. And six air bags, electronic stability con-trol and antilock brakes are standard on all models.

Fans of VW’s fuel-thrifty engines will be happy to know the Jetta TDI — for turbodiesel injection — is in the 2011 lineup with the same 140-horsepower, four cylinder engine it had in

2010.But the TDI won’t be in

showrooms until late this calendar year; trim levels of the gasoline-powered Jet-tas — S, SE, SEL and GLI — arrive starting in October from the assembly plant in Mexico.

The test car was the mid-range SEL with 170-horse-power, five-cylinder engine, automatic transmission and nice standard features like 17-inch wheels, chrome-finished grille and naviga-tion system with touch-screen.

Of course, VW is known for its road handling and r i d e , a n d t h e te s t Je t -ta wound its way through twisty roads and back-and-forth switchbacks with poise. I stayed in my lane on skinny two-lane roads with-out fuss, even at good speeds around curves. The more I drove, the more comfortable the driving became.

Despite the fact this 2011 Jetta’s suspension wasn’t tuned for sportiness, the car’s handling was pleasing. And the ride was not pun-ishing or harsh for passen-gers, even on uneven pave-ment. All in all, I didn’t miss the previous year’s multilink rear suspension.
