From zoom-zoom to Sky Activ

Mazda, the car company known for its “zoom-zoom” marketing campaign, is selling fuel efficiency now, too.

Mazda doesn’t have a fuel-sip-ping, 2012 gasoline-electric hy-brid or all-electric vehicle. But for 2012, it’s applying SkyActiv, the company’s package of fuel-sav-ing equipment and upgrades, to the Mazda3 sedan and five-door hatchback.

It’s the first rollout of SkyActiv, but it won’t be the last. Already, Mazda officials have announced a SkyActiv version of the CX-5 sport utility vehicle will be out in Japan this year.

Fuel mileage numbers for the 2012 Mazda3 SkyActiv from the federal government are notewor-thy: 33 miles per gallon in city driving and 40 mpg on the high-way for the sedan.

This is the first 40-mpg rating for a Mazda since the U.S. govern-ment began rating vehicles, and it makes the Mazda3 competitive with other 2012 small cars that boast 40-mpg-on-the-highway government ratings.

Plus, the Mazda3 is a recom-mended buy of Consumer Reports magazine, where its reliability is rated as above average.

Starting manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price, including des-tination charge, is $15,995 for the base 2012 Mazda3 i SV sedan with five-speed manual transmission and no air conditioning.

The lowest-priced Mazda3 with automatic transmission is the 2012 Mazda3 i Sport sedan with air conditioning, with a retail starting price of $18,490.

But both these Mazda3 price leaders have last year’s 148-horse-power, four-cylinder engine, not the new, fuel-efficient SkyActiv engine and transmissions that help attain the 33/40-mpg rating.

Buyers must move up to the higher-level Mazda3 i Touring se-dan, with starting retail price of $19,495 with manual and $20,345 with automatic, to get the new, 155-horsepower, four-cylinder,

SkyActiv engine.The 2012 Mazda3 SkyActiv five-

door hatchback is a bit more ex-pensive, with a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $20,095 for a 2012 i Touring hatch-back with manual and $20,945 for i Touring hatchback with auto-matic.

In comparison, a 2012 Ford Fo-cus SFE sedan that’s rated at 28/40 mpg with 160-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and automatic transmission, has a starting retail price of $19,885.

The 2012 Hyundai Elantra se-dan that’s rated at 33/40 mpg with 148-horsepower, four-cylinder engine, has a starting retail price of $16,120 with manual and $18,370 with automatic.

Mazda isn’t exactly turning away from its “have fun, enjoy per-formance” marketing mantra as much as it’s layering on a message about saving gasoline and money at the pump, too.

Thus, the 2-liter, double over-head cam, direct gasoline injection four cylinder that has the SkyActiv

label on it produces 7 more horse-power than last year’s four banger even as it gets 21 percent better highway fuel economy and some 18 percent better city fuel econo-my, per the ratings from the feds.

The technology isn’t new in the auto industry. European car com-panies have had direct-injection engines for years, and tweaking exhaust systems and computer-ized engine and transmission con-trol modules has been going on for decades.

But Mazda engineers did more, though it’s not necessarily visible.

Bumpers are more streamlined aerodynamically now. The Maz-da3 body structure was revamped and dropped 220 pounds. A lighter vehicle, after all, uses less gasoline to get around.

Yet, the Mazda3 structurally also is more rigid this year, in part be-cause of high-strength steel that doesn’t carry the heft of more tra-ditional steel.

To a casual observer, though, a 2012 Mazda3 looks pretty much like the 2011 version, with body styling that’s sporty looking and expressive, especially when it’s painted a Sky Blue color that was on the test Mazda3 5-Door.

Still, some people don’t care

for the way the shape of the front grille resembles a big, smiley grin.

The test Mazda3 hatchback, which didn’t quite weigh 3,000 pounds, retained the capable han-dling and good road feel that Maz-das are known for.

Less than 15 feet, from end to end, the car nimbly wound through constrained parking ga-rages, held its line and composure in sweeping curves and slipped into parallel parking spots easily.

Torque peaks at 148 foot-pounds at 4,100 rpm now compared with 135 foot-pounds at 4,500 rpm in last year’s four cylinder. It doesn’t push a driver’s back hard into the seatback, but it’s not wimpy, ei-ther. This compares with 146 foot-pounds of peak torque at 4,450 rpm in the 2012 Ford Focus and 131 foot-pounds at 4,700 rpm in the Hyundai Elantra.

The test Mazda3 moved smartly along in city traffic and, without effort or change in driving style, got 33 mpg in travel that was 70 percent city and 30 percent high-way.

This translated into some 475 miles on a single, 14.5-gallon tank of gas.

Note that the 40-mpg label is on Mazda3 sedans. The automat-

ic Mazda3 hatchbacks, which in-cluded the test car, are rated at 39 mpg on the highway.

The ride in the Mazda3 hatch-back was noisy as 16-inch tires conveyed significant sound from pavement surfaces into the pas-senger cabin, and a driver some-times has to turn up the radio vol-ume to hear over the road noise.

But fit and finish on the tester was excellent, inside and out. The Grand Touring test model came well appointed with heated front seats, eight-way power driver seat, moonroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather-trimmed seats, four-wheel disc brakes and Bluetooth hands-free phone con-nectivity all standard.

The back seat is cramped for three adults, but legroom of 36.2 inches in the Mazda3 sedan and hatch is more than the 33.2 inches in the back seat of the Ford Focus.

Cargo room grows to some 42 cubic feet when the rear seatbacks are folded down in the Mazda3 hatchback, a bit less than the 44.8 cubic feet at the back of the Focus hatchback.

The Mazda3 sedan and hatch-back earned four out of five stars in an overall crash test rating from the federal government.

Rugged versatility in a variety of styles and trims

Dodge’s tough pick-ups have been hard-working staples of jobsites and America’s highways for nearly a century, having de-buted in 1917. Known for deliv-ering power options that include the HEMI engine, Dodge’s trucks are now known as the Ram.

The 2012 Ram 1500 is offered in regular cab, Quad Cab and Crew Cab models, with three box lengths: 8-foot (regular cab), 6-foot-4-inches (regular cab and Quad Cab), and 5-foot-7-inches (Ram 1500 Crew Cab). Eleven trim levels are available, each with a unique appearance: Tradesman, Express, Outdoors-man, ST, SLT, Sport, Sport R/T, Lone Star, Big Horn, Laramie and Laramie Longhorn.

Three engine choicesAdditionally, Ram can be out-

fitted with one of three engine choices: a 3.7-liter V-6, 4.7-liter V-8 or 5.7-liter HEMI V-8. The 3.7 produces 215 hp and 235 lbs-ft of torque and is EPA rated at 14/20 for 2WD vehicles. The 4.7 is a V-8 that pops out 310 hp and 330 lbs-ft of torque for a 14/19 2WD EPA rating and a 13/18 rat-ing for 4WD. For HEMI lovers, the brawny 5.7-liter V-8 thun-ders out 390hp and 407 lbs-ft of torque, rated at 14/20 for 2WD and 14/19 for 4WD. Mated with an automatic six-speed transmis-sion my test Ram 1500 Express, powered by the 5.7-liter HEMI, managed a weeklong average of 15.9mpg in mixed-use driving in

severe winter conditions.Living up to its strong and rug-

ged reputation, Ram 1500 towing capacity starts at 8,000 pounds for the 3.7-liter and moves up to 15,500 pounds for my test 5.7 Ex-press with Crew Cab.

Full-size pick-upBuilt in Warren, Michigan, the

5342-lb. Ram 1500 Express uti-lizes body-on-frame construc-tion with a ladder-type frame, steel cab and a double-wall steel pick-up box. Rams 1500’s Ex-press, with a Crew Cab, is a full-size pick-up that measures 229 inches long with a 5-foot-7-inch short bed, on a 140.5-inch wheel-base. Width is 79.4 inches, height is 75.1 inches, ground clearance accommodates 9 inches and the open tailgate to the ground is 34.9 inches.

Exterior enhancements include a Gray upper fascia , “4X4” badge , “Ram 1500” badge, Black rear bumper, body-color fuel filler door, halogen headlamps, locking tailgate, tinted glass windows, black exterior mirrors, power heated mirrors with manual fold-away and dual rear exhaust.

Power lives up to its promiseUnder the hood, the HEMI

lives up to its promise and de-livers power when asked. Driv-ing more like a car than like the powerful full-size pick-up truck it is, Ram 1500 Express may not

take an autocross with tuner car aplomb, but it delivers a smooth, confident, comfortable ride, and is equally at home on the job site or on the way to a restaurant, theater, tailgating party, camping expedition or the kids’ school or carpool.

Power is available for pulling large loads and for accelerating in all conditions. Aggressive and re-liable in passing gear, Ram 1500 is strong off the line with a 7.3-sec-ond zero-to-60mph sprint ac-complished on a less-than-ideal track, and the half-ton completed a quarter-mile in 15.5 seconds.

Road inadequacies, potholes, mudholes and snow banks are navigated securely thanks to an upper and lower aluminum A-arm, front suspension with coil-over twin-tube shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar, while the rear suspension is a five-link solid axle with a track bar, coil springs, twin-tube shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar.

Cabin combines comfort and utility

The cabin is a mix of upscale amenities, comfort and rugged-ness. The crew cab showed seat-ing for five or six with head room of 41 inches, legroom of 41 inch-es, shoulder room of 66 inches and hip room of 61.5 inches up front, with headroom of 39.9, leg-room of 40.3, shoulder room of 65.7 and hip room of 63.2 inches in the rear.

Included inside are such accou-terments as dual-zone air con-ditioning, power windows with front one-touch up and down feature, power locks, speed con-trol, a media center with a 30-gi-gabyte hard drive, first-in-seg-ment “store in the floor” storage bins with removable liners, big enough for ten 12-ounce bever-ages and ice, and first-in-seg-

ment heated and ventilated front seats.

Five-star safetyFrom a safety perspective, Ram

1500 earned five stars out of five in side crash tests and three out of five stars in rollover tests. The Ram 1500 offers more than 30 active and passive safety features, including standard front and rear side-curtain air bags with En-hanced Accident Response Sys-tem, side seat airbags, knee bol-sters, seat-belt pre-tensioners, Anti-lock Brake System, Bel-tAlert® System, and Electronic Stability Control; and available adjustable pedals, ParkSense® Rear Park Assist and ParkView® Rear Back-up Camera.

The 2012 Dodge Ram 1500 line starts with the ST model at $21,475 (base), and moves up to the Laramie Longhorn at $43,125 (base). Of the 11 available trims, my test Express was the third

most economical with a base price of $23,080 for the 4x2 and $26,755 for the 4x4 I reviewed. The Crew Cab brought the base to $33,430. The Flame Red Clear Coat exterior paint matched to a Dark Slate/Medium Graystone interior was included. The ST Popular Equipment Group add-ed $640 for remote keyless en-try, floor mats, carpet and Siri-usMX Satellite radio. Destination charges brought the sticker to $35,065, but pricing incentives scaled that down to a purchase price of $32,565.
