International CES 2015 – A record braking show

•  The 2015 International CES stood under the leitmotif to solve world problems and improve lives

•  As the largest show in its history it covered more than 2.2 million net square feet of exhibit space featuring more than 3,600 exhibitors

•  Besides the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Ventian/ Sands an additional venue, the Aria hotel, has been added to the show floor

•  More than 170.000 persons from all over the world visited CES 2015

•  Main categories at this year’s International CES were automotive electronics, unmanned vehicles/systems, connected devices, personalized health care solutions, 3D printers, gaming and more

•  This year, Volkswagen made his debut to the show complementing all other OEMs that have been present in the past years

•  During keynote speeches, press conferences and presentations representatives of the automotive industry explained that the objective of their innovations is to make the environment safer and better

•  The objective of ADAS functions and partially or fully autonomous driving vehicles is to either avoid crashes or decrease damage in unavoidable accidents

•  Autonomous driving vehicles help to decrease the number of vehicles on the road and to support car sharing solutions between multiple users

•  Connectivity solutions like V2X communication and telematics solutions support safety features and enhance the comfort of the driver

•  In order to give back time to the driver, systems will find optimized routes, help to find parking spots or even valet park the vehicle

•  Full- and Semi-Automated Driving •  Nearly all OEMs and automotive Tier 1 suppliers showed

developments and applications for automated and semi-automated driving as well as for ADAS functions

•  In comparison to past years where applications have been shown in limited and secured areas, at the International CES 2015 Tier 1 suppliers and automotive OEMs showed their developments on public roads

•  Based on these demos and environmental conditions the first series application for full-automated driving in normal traffic will most probably be highway driving

•  During two days before the start of International CES 2015 Audi invited a choice of journalists to a journey from Silicon Valley to Las Vegas during which an Audi vehicle drove fully automated on highways

•  Apart from supporting technologies a focus of Automotive 1st Tier suppliers like Visteon, TRW and Bosch is to understand user acceptance for autonomous driving vehicles and which information drivers would like to receive at each state of their trip – Visteon has for example an autonomous driving simulator

•  First Concept Car especially designed for CES •  Objective is to give time, space and privacy

back to the customer •  Autonomous driving electrical vehicle with

interior that can be changed into a lounge •  Wheels are at the very edges of the car (=

carriage concept) in order to make use of the added room of an EV

•  Automated parking function through app on smart devices

•  Vehicle can remotely be called for pick up via smart device

•  Lighting Concept •  Blue color of front lights indicates that vehicle is in

autonomous driving mode •  LED lights on the front surface can follow a pedestrian

crossing the street in front of the car in order to confirm that vehicle has seen the person

•  Front laser lights can write messages or symbols on the road like e.g. a cross-walk for pedestrians

•  Rear lights can write messages on the rear of the vehicle to warn vehicles behind car

Audi - Piloted Test Drive over 560 miles START: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OS9FbvEnFWQ ARRIVAL: https://audimedia.tv/en/vid/550-miles-piloted-drive-the-last-stage

•  From Race Track: October 2014 Audi RS7 Audi Piloted Drive at Hockenheim •  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOYsI1cqUrw

•  To Road: Audi A7 Piloted Test Drive over 560 miles (ca. 900 km) from Silicon Valley to Las Vegas

•  Journalists drove the Audi A7 in pilot mode while an Audi test driver was on the passenger seat •  Piloted driving took place on public highways at up to 70 mph •  Car can initiate lane changes and passing maneuvers as well as accelerate and brake independently •  Vehicle is equipped with following systems and sensors:

•  Adaptive cruise control (ACC) •  Audi side assist (ASA) long-range radar sensors •  Mid-range radar sensors at the front and the rear of the vehicle •  Laser scanners in front Singleframe grille and rear bumper •  Four smaller cameras at the front and rear of the vehicle •  Hi-resolution, wide-angle 3D video camera

•  Processor handles 8 billion operations per second

•  SOP 2015 in BMW Mini •  Mirror with bimodal functionality operating either as standard

automatic-dimming mirror or as rear video display •  Gentex CMOS high dynamic range camera used for full display

mode •  Video display mode provides wider viewing angle

•  Makes other cars and objects look smaller => driver has to pay attention to estimate distances correctly

•  Mirror mode still necessary •  In case camera or display fails as backup solution •  Due to weather conditions (ice, dirt, etc.) camera might be blocked •  Mirror mode allows driver to view vehicle interior

•  Driver switches manually into display mode with a tilt button •  In the interior of the mirror an element tilts turning at the same time the display

on •  At night glare from behind driving cars is guided to the top through this tilting

element not dazzling the driver in display mode •  Mirror chrome coated in black panel technology having a

silver homogenous surface as mirror and allowing the display to shine through

•  Gentex offers advanced styling for rear mirrors adapting the style of the mirror to the interior design of the car

•  Toyota opens its around 5680 patents on fuel cells to competition

•  Toyota would like to build a hydrogen society •  At CES 2015 Toyota announced that they allow other companies to use

their hydrogen fuel cell patents without any license or royalty fees •  The objective is to move to hydrogen quicker, more effectively and more

economically

•  Toyota Mirai with SOP in Oct. 2015 is first hydrogen fuel cell series vehicle

•  Price ca. $ 50.000 •  151 hp motor – 60 mph in 9 sec. •  Distance = 300 miles •  Refuel = 3-5 minutes •  Cost per mile equal to gasoline today but zero emission driving - the only

byproduct is water •  The Mirai has enough output electricity to run a fridge during a power

outage

•  Hydrogen Fuel Stations •  Today in the whole US there are 12 fuel cell stations •  California

•  Together with a utility partner Toyota plans to add 45 stations until 2016 and to reach a total of 100 stations in 2024

•  Northeast US •  Toyota pays millions to install hydrogen fuel stations

same platform) •  Driver can decide in vehicle on whether information should be

displayed in full screen or split screen mode and where to place the information on the screen

•  NVIDIA Drive PX Auto-Pilot Computer •  Today more and more cameras are integrated into vehicles •  With the objective of autonomous driving cars cameras will

•  Build environment models around the car •  Car has to become situationally aware •  Car has to find its path •  Car needs to be software-updatable in order to further improve systems

•  NVIDIA imagines all cameras of the vehicle to be connected to a supercomputing processors – the Drive PX

BMW - M4 Concept Iconic Lights (1/2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2oW8YC_A2w

•  Glare Free Laser Headlight •  At a speed higher than 45 mph the laser light automatically

boosts the laser high beams up to a distance of 650 yards (110 yards below 45 mph)

•  By moving mechanically the laser lights, cars in front and oncoming traffic are not dazzled by the lights

•  A dynamic light spot of the laser light warns the driver and pedestrians at the side of the street as well as bigger animals by illuminating them up to a 110 yards in advance •  Pedestrians and bigger animals are recognized through infrared

sensors •  Narrow Passage Guidance Light

•  Camera system detects narrow passages •  The Laser Narrow Passage Guidance Light marks the exact

vehicle size on the road and warns the driver if the passage is too narrow to pass

•  Preemptive Adapted Headlights •  Controlled by GPS and Cameras the light knows the

environmental conditions in advance and adapts to the road illuminating curves, roundabouts and S-curves
