Solutions For
Stent ManufacturingVascuLathe represents a revolutionary approach to satisfying the demanding requirements of stent manufacturingapplications. The fully integrated motion system couples automated material handling functionality with high performancedirect-drive linear and rotary motion capability. The integral linear-rotary design increases throughput by two to five timeswhen compared to traditional screw-based or other manufacturing approaches, while still maintaining submicron toleranceson tight part geometries.
The increased throughput gives much needed flexibility in the extremely competitive stent-manufacturing environment. Thehigher throughput of the VascuLathe implies that fewer machines are required to produce an equivalent number of stentswhen compared to traditional manufacturing approaches, resulting in lower total labor costs and reduced floor spacerequirements. Alternatively, the VascuLathe can be used to meet increased and varied product demand within the existingmanufacturing space, saving the costs associated with facility expansion.

Many medical devices and diagnostictools are fabricated from tubularmaterials that can have multiplefeatures integrated along their length. For example, a hypotube may have askive or slot on the distal end tofacilitate the placement ofcomponents such as ballooncatheters, and will have a spiral orinterlaced pattern cut along the lengthfor flexibility and directional controlwhen inserted into the body.Endoscopes have intersecting, welded, cylindrical features forcamera and control ports andirrigation features for clear viewingthrough the device. All of theseproducts require precise angularpositioning and velocity control duringthe manufacturing process to ensureconsistent, repeatable performance ofthe finished component.

Captured Collet Systems
Captured collet systems have threads on the end of the collet that are used to fixthe collet to the closing system. In most machine tools this type of collet is threadedinto a “draw-bar” mechanism that moves the collet against a mating taperedsurface to open and close the device. As the collet is closing, this motion can resultin displacement of the material in process. The amount of movement variesdepending on the distance the collet must close before engaging the material.
To minimize tube motion during the open/closesequence, Aerotech’s LaserTurn 1 system keepsthe collet stationary and instead moves the
mating tapered surface. As the tapered surfacemoves to close the collet no linear motion isimparted in the tube. It is possible to make parts of
unlimited length through a cut-index-repeatsequence using this approach.

The ever-shrinking geometries ofelectronic components, coupled withadvances in battery technology, haveled to the development of a largearray of implantable medical devicesfor heart rhythm management(pacemakers, defibrillators) andchronic pain relief (neuro-stimulation).These products share a commonpackaging technique that consists of atitanium half-shell enclosure joinedtogether with a hermetic seam weld. The integrity of the weld is crucial toensure the long-term reliability of thedevice and to protect the patient fromcontamination. Traditionalapproaches to the welding processhave utilized standard rotary andlinear motion devices coupled withcomplicated post-processing softwareto create the weld path. Aerotech’sHermeSys is a holistic design thatoptimizes all aspects of the hermeticseam-welding process. Specializedmechanics are used to accuratelyposition the device during the weldingprocess. Onboard kinematics allowsthe programming of weld geometry inpart space for rapid optimization ofprocess parameters on the machine(no post-processing required). Andfinally, a reference design is availablefor an automated material handlingsystem to ensure that the partload/unload cycle can keep pacewith the optimized welding process.
Solutions For
Hermetic Seam WeldingOptional dual-drive rotary assemblywith pneumatic clamp ensuresconsistent part engagement duringthe welding process
Optional kinematic part fixture withwide acceptance angles ensuresprecision alignment of the part forautomated load/unload processes
Rigid one-piece design tightlycouples the laser head with motionto eliminate weld path errorsinduced by differential motion inthe optics
11
Real-Time Kinematics
Real-time kinematics removes the need for complex post-processing tools tocreate multi-axis laser weld paths. The weld profile is programmed in linear/arcsegments or points on a cubic spline interpolated path. Part geometry andwelding speeds can be optimized on the machine without re-posting the weldprofile.
Split axis configuration consisting ofZ/rotary and X/Y stage assembliesallows for higher acceleration, throughput, and weld accuracy
Multiple mounting locations for theX/Y stage assembly support a widerange of focal lengths
Alternate configurations providemaximum flexibility when integratingwith existing material handling systems

Most contact lenses and IOLs have aspheric (constant radius) or aspheric(variable radius, rotationallysymmetric) profile that can be easilymanufactured on a two-axis lathe. Fortreating astigmatism however, a toriclens profile is required. To accuratelyre-create the toric profile, a two-axislathe must be outfitted with a fast-acting tool oscillating at hundreds ofhertz while providing sub-microntracking accuracy and surface finish.Aerotech’s TLG (Toric Lens Generator)has been designed specifically for themanufacture of toric lenses. Thecompact, low-mass design allows foreasy integration onto existingAerotech linear stages. Driveelectronics plug directly into theA3200 control platform and occupya space no larger than a standardlinear servo drive. The TLG is alsoavailable with an internal forcecancellation system that significantlyreduces vibrations that are introducedinto the machine by the high-frequencytool oscillation.

Bio printing, also known as tissueengineering, is an exciting newprocess that is being used tomanufacture functioning tissue forimplantation in the human body. Theprocess is similar to additive 3Dmanufacturing technologies that havebeen used in rapid-prototypingmachines where structures are builtlayer-by-layer. For bio-printingapplications the material beingdeposited consists of biological cellsthat fuse together to form tissues thatcan be implanted in the body. Theprocess can be used to manufactureblood vessels, bone, teeth, andultimately entire replacement organs.

Life happens at the sub-micron level.Observing and manipulatingbiological processes in applicationssuch as micro-robotic cellmanipulation, DNA sequencing, andmicroscopy therefore require motionon the sub-micron level. Some of thesemolecular-scale processes must alsobe capable of moving in the tens ofmillimeters to access multiple siteswithin a given sample or within anarray of samples. Aerotech’s line ofnanopositioning stages, with theirnanometer-level step sizes coupledwith millimeter travel ranges, areideally suited for these applications. Acomprehensive line of linear, rotary, and vertical displacement stages areavailable to create complex multi-dimensional motion platforms for theanalysis and manipulation of cellularfeatures and processes.

Linear Servo Amps for High Accuracy and Ultra-Low Jitter Operation
Aerotech’s linear servo amplifiers arefor motion control applications thatrequire high accuracy drives with noPWM switching noise and zerodeadband. Because the linear servoamplifiers have no PWM switchingnoise, they do not induce electricalnoise into sensitive electricalmeasurement devices.
Improved Dynamic TrackingAccuracy
Aerotech’s linear amplifiers have nodead band or cross over distortion asthe current changes direction. Thisresults in a significant decrease inposition error during directionreversal. With linear amplifiertechnology it is possible to maintainmicron level dynamic positioningtolerances without having to reducespeed on small arcs and circular partfeatures.

Aerotech PWM digital servo amplifiers arecapable of controlling brushless, DC brush, andstepper motors over a wide range of operatingvoltages and currents. Based on a commonarchitecture, these amplifiers perform bothcurrent- and position-loop closures digitally.
The use of high-performance double-precisionprocessors allows these drives to generate ultra-smooth motion profiles. Servo system response isoptimized with the use of up to eight second-order loop-shaping filters, precise time-alignedfeed-forward and other proprietary techniqueswith loop closure rates up to 20 kHz.
The PWM family is offered in a number of highlyefficient versions. The MP is a low power, smallfootprint PWM drive ideal for space-sensitiveapplications. The CP is a medium-power PWMdrive capable of running directly from AC mainsvoltage and is optimized for cost-sensitiveapplications. The HPe is the highest performancePWM drive providing a host of features notavailable on the other PWM drives, and isavailable in output current ranges from 10 A to150 A peak.
Options for Aerotech PWM amplifiers includeintegral encoder interpolation, one- to three-axisPosition Synchronized Output (PSO), automaticbrake control, digital and analog I/O expansion, absolute encoder interface, and one- or two-channel resolver interfaces. An optionaldedicated Ethernet port is available on the HPedrives for connection to third-party I/Oexpansion devices.
