AutomatedExplosives Safety Siting

(ESS)

ESSESS is a software tool developed

by DOD that uses existing GIS and other data to automate the process of explosives safety site planning

ESSESS consists of two software tools

·ESS Tool Kit· ESS Site Planner

ESS Site Planner• QD Analysis• Site Plan Submittal Package• Master Plan Constraints (ESQD Arcs)• Mitigation – dealing with violations• Consequences – What happens if an

explosion occurs?

ESS Requires 3 databases

• Installation Map• Installation Real Property

Inventory• Explosives Storage Data

Graphics data should be formatted using the CADD/GIS Technology Center’s Spatial Data Standards (SDS) for Facilities, Infrastructure,

and Environment (SDSFIE)

“It’s all about the data”

• You can’t perform a quality Quantity-Distance Analysis without good data

• If you can’t come up with good data for automated site planning, you can’t come up with good data for manual site planning

Two Major Data Challenges

• Complete supporting relational data

• Accurate graphics / imagery
