5 After you install AliasStudio, you can easily modify the installation (Adding or removingAliasStudio components on page 33).

6 If you experience any problems, Troubleshooting on page 37.

Installation types

Before you begin installing AliasStudio, you must decide which type of installation you willuse.

Local installation

In a local installation, the AliasStudio software and a license are on a local computer. Asingle user at this machine can run AliasStudio.

■ One computer

■ install software (Installing procedures on page 11)

■ install license, if required (Licensing Windows on page 19)

In this type of installation a node-locked license is used. It enables you to run AliasStudioon one particular computer. This computer must have an Ethernet ID or hardware lock.

License server installation

In a license server installation, the AliasStudio software is installed on multiple clientcomputers and the licenses and the application server software are installed on a server.

2 | Part 1 Installing AliasStudio

■ One Server

■ install AliasStudio utilities (recommended as these tools have been updated).

■ install AliasStudio licenses, if required (Licensing Windows on page 19).

■ Many users

■ install AliasStudio software (see Installing procedures on page 11)

For this installation a floating license is used. It allows anyone on the network to use thelicensed software, on as many machines as you have purchased licenses for. For example,if you install five licenses on your server, up to five machines on the network can run thelicensed software at any one time.

You choose one machine on your network to act as the server for these licenses. This servermachine needs either an Ethernet ID or a hardware lock. All other machines must be ableto connect to and receive their license from this server.

IE Settings for Windows XP SP2

6 | Chapter 1 System requirements

To run the new AliasStudio help system, computers that have been updated with XPService Pack 2 need to have some settings changed.

Changes to default security settings are made when an upgrade to Windows XP ServicePack 2 is performed. These changes can result in unexpected popup messages requiringyou to explicitly allow the help system to be viewed.

When you first open the online help system, you’ll get the following message:

■ To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showingactive content that could access your computer.

You can then click for the option to Allow Blocked Content. If this is done, you’ll receivea Security Warning that says:

Allowing active content such as script and ActiveX controls can be useful, but activecontent might also harm your computer. Are you sure you want to let this file run activecontent?

To allow this content to run without getting blocked, please follow the following steps:

1 Open Internet Explorer

2 Go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab

3 Scroll down to the section labeled Security

4 Check the box labeled “Allow active content to run in files on My Computer”

5 Click “OK” and then close the Internet Options window.

■ Install the Flash plug-in to view animated tutorial sequences in your browser. Free plug-insare available from http://www.flash.com.

■ Windows XP Professional with SP2 or Windows XP Professional x64 Edition with SP2

■ Pentium III or 4 processor, at least 500 MHz

■ 1GB of hard drive space

■ 1GB Memory (2GB or more highly recommended)

■ A CD-ROM drive on this machine or a shared CD-ROM drive accessed via a networkedmapped drive.

■ ATI FireGL or Nvidia Quadro FX graphics card with 128MB video memory (256MB orgreater video memory highly recommended). A list of supported graphics cards is availableat http://www.autodesk.com/qual-charts .

Setting system hardware properties

The performance of AliasStudio in displaying graphics depends on the quality of yourgraphics card and on the option settings in the Display Properties window of your graphicscard.

To learn the option settings for graphics cards that are certified for use with AliasStudio, seethe latest qualification chart, at http://www.autodesk.com/qual-charts.

If your graphics card is not certified, perform the following steps. Some of these steps offeronly general guidelines because each manufacturer has a unique set of display options.

To set up your graphics card

1 Right-mouse click a blank part of your Windows desktop and choose Properties fromthe pop-up menu.

This displays the Display Properties window, also available through the Control Panel.

2 Click the Settings tab.

3 From the Color Palette pull-down menu, choose True Color.

This specifies 24 bits of color for best color quality in displayed images.

4 Drag the Desktop Area slider to the best display resolution supported by your hardware.

5 When the driver software for your graphics card was installed, a tab named for the cardwas likely created in the Display Properties window. The tab has performance optionsthat vary with the kind of card. Here are some general suggestions for settingperformance options:

In the Display Properties window, click the tab named for your graphics card, if thereis one.

8 | Chapter 1 System requirements

AliasStudio works with four-bit or greater overlay planes, whether they aresingle-buffered or double-buffered.

6 Click Apply, then OK.

7 Some graphics cards have a AliasStudio OpenGL preset. Check the qualification chartsat http://www.autodesk.com/qual-charts for information regarding setting up your videocard.

To set up your mouse and keyboard

The mouse buttons should be set as follows:

1 left mouse button: click

2 middle mouse button: middle mouse button

3 right button: contextual menu/right mouse button

To check or set the mouse buttons, go to the Windows Start menu and choose Settings> Control Panel > Mouse. Use standard mouse driver option settings. Do not, forexample, set the middle mouse button to work as a double-click of the left button.

Some vendors offer Windows enhancement software that lets you use your mouse toactivate windows and panels in the same way as in UNIX operating systems. Forexample, you can download an XMouse productivity tool from microsoft.com tosimulate UNIX mouse-window activation. However, we have not tested such softwarefor use with AliasStudio for Windows.

A wheel mouse (such as Microsoft Intellimouse) should operate as a 3-button mouse. If not, re-configure it in your Windows Control Panel (choose Start > Settings > ControlPanel > Mouse). You do not need to install a new driver.

What do serial numbers look like?

Here is a sample of what a serial number might look like:

123-12345678

What if I don’t have a serial number?

If you did not receive a serial number, contact your local Autodesk sales office or your resellerto obtain one.

The following instructions tell you how to use your serial number and hardware ID to obtainlicense data from Autodesk. The instructions then tell you how to use the license data tocreate a license file that can be used to run the software.

22 | Chapter 3 Licensing Windows

Activate your software

1 Install AliasStudio, if you haven’t already.

2 From the Start menu, choose Programs > Autodesk > AliasStudio > Licensing.

3 The Product Configuration Wizard opens, and guides you through the process ofactivating your serial number or installing your license.

What if I closed the licensing program?

If you closed the Product Configuration Wizard while you were working on the Internet inthe previous step, go to the Windows Start menu and select Programs > Autodesk >AliasStudio > Licensing. Select I have a license that I need to install from the list of entriesand proceed to install your license.

Next steps (if the licensing is successful)

■ If you are a node-locked (single machine) user, your software is now activated and readyto use. From the Start menu, choose Programs > Autodesk > AliasStudio > AliasStudio .

■ If you are setting up a floating server and a network of clients, go to the followingtopic:Setting up floating servers without installing the software on page 25

If the licensing is not successful

If the license installation is not successful, the Product Configuration window reports"Installation Incomplete."

1 Click the Show Installation Log button to read a log to find out what went wrong.

2 Go to Licensing troubleshooting on page 45 in the Troubleshooting section for moredetails on what to look for.

Activating the software from a license

Use these instructions if:

■ You have already obtained a node-locked license from Autodesk and need to install itto activate your software.

■ You already have a floating license, you are setting up a license server on a Windows XPmachine, and you want the Autodesk AliasStudio software installed on the same machine.

| 23

Do not use these instructions if:

■ You have a serial number but have not yet received a license. Go to Activating thesoftware from a serial number on page 21.

■ You are setting up a floating license server and do not want the software installed onthe license server machine, or you want to set up a floating license server on a machinenot running Windows XP. Go to Setting up floating servers without installing the softwareon page 25

If you have obtained license data from Autodesk, you can use the Product ConfigurationWizard to automatically create the license file that is required to use the software.

A license file is created from the license data provided to you by Autodesk. This data mayhave been provided to you in an email, a license file, a fax or even read to you over thephone.

License files typically have the following names and locations:

■ For node-locked (single) licenses, C:\FlexLM\aw.dat

■ For floating licenses, C:\FlexLM\aw_servername.dat (where servername is the name ofthe license server.

What do licenses look like?

Node locked licenses look similar to the following sample:

FEATURE Studio sgiawd 2008 09-may-2007 uncounted 7CD390F11000

1 Click the Show Installation Log button to read a log to find out what went wrong.

2 Go to Licensing troubleshooting on page 45 in the Troubleshooting section for moredetails on what to look for.

Setting up floating servers without installing the software

Use these instructions if:

■ You are setting up a floating license server and do not want to run the AliasStudiosoftware on it.

■ You want to set up a floating license server running on operating systems other thanWindows.

Do not use these instructions if:

■ You have a node-locked (single) license.

■ You intend to use a Windows machine as a floating license server. In this case, you mustinstall the Autodesk AliasStudio software. Go to Activating the software from a serialnumber on page 21 or Activating the software from a license on page 23.

■ You intend to use a Windows machine as a floating license server and as a workingmachine. Go to Activating the software from a serial number on page 21 or Activatingthe software from a license on page 23.

In some cases, you may want to set up a floating license server on platforms other thanWindows. Or, you may want to set up a dedicated license server on Windows machineswithout installing the Autodesk AliasStudio software.

| 25

In these cases, you cannot use the Product Configuration Wizard for license installation. Ifyou are setting up a server on a platform other than Windows, you must download theappropriate license tool software from the Autodesk website.

To set up the license software

1 Go to http://www.autodesk.com/licensetools (You may have to register for this free service.)

2 From the Web site, open the installation instructions for the server machine’s operatingsystem. From these instructions, find out how to locate the hardware ID for the servermachine. Copy or write down this hardware ID.

3 Download and install the license tool software on the server machine, if required.

4 Submit your license request at http://www.autodesk.com/opa/.

To submit your license request, you need to provide the serial number for the floatinglicense you purchased, along with the hardware ID for the machine that will be thefloating server.

5 Follow the installation instructions you downloaded to set up and configure the serverand its clients.

If you do not have Internet access:

If you do not have Internet access, you need to phone in with the hardware ID for yourserver machine. Contact your Alias representative for details.

Set up the client computers

Client computers must have AliasStudio installed and must have a client license file thatpoints to the license server.

These steps aren’t necessary for the server...

You can already run AliasStudio locally on the license server computer using its existingaw_servername.dat file, so you don’t need to do the following steps for the server.

To set up the client computer:

1 Install AliasStudio on every client computer you are going to set up.

2 On the server machine, make a copy of its server license file, located atC:/FLEXLM/aw_servername.dat. Place the copy at another location (for example, yourdesktop) and rename it aw_clientname.dat.

26 | Chapter 3 Licensing Windows

Notes

Only the original file, aw_servername.dat, should remain in the server’s FLEXLM folder.

Make sure that Hide known File Extensions is not checked as one of your View optionsfor this folder, or the file may be called aw_clientname.dat.txt but you will only seeit as aw_clientname.dat.

aw_clientname.dat.txt will not work as a license file. (You will have to rename it toaw_clientname.dat.)

3 Edit the file you copied in a text editor (for example, Notepad).

4 Keep the lines beginning with “SERVER” and “VENDOR”.

5 Remove all the rest of the lines in the file.

6 Add a line reading, “USE_SERVER”.

Example ..

The original file might look like the following:

SERVER PC-GAIA 123456789012 7111

VENDOR sgiawd

FEATURE Studiof SGIAWD 2008 3-may-2007\

4 000000000000

The edited file should look like the following:

SERVER PC-GAIA 123456789012 7111

VENDOR sgiawd

USE_SERVER

1 Save the aw_clientname.dat file and copy it to the C:\FLEXLM folder on all clientmachines. Rename the file on each client to reflect the client’s machine name (butleave the contents of the file the same on all client machines).

2 Verify that you can launch the software on each client machine by selecting Start >Programs > Autodesk > AliasStudio 2009.

Advanced license troubleshooting

To investigate license errors

If you think that you have already installed a valid license, but continue to receive

48 | Chapter 6 Troubleshooting

No valid license found

or the system can’t find aw.dat or aw_servername.dat, try these steps:

1 Restart the license server or node-locked machine, in case you didn’t do it after youinstalled AliasStudio.

2 If you tried to run AliasStudio on a client or server, make sure that the time and dateon the client and server are synchronized.

3 Review the licensing procedure to make sure that you completed all the steps.

4 Do the steps in Example of a license log file on page 50.

5 Do the steps in To check license errors with lmtools on page 53.

6 Verify that the directory C:\FLEXlm\ contains the file aw.dat or aw_servername.dat.

If this file doesn’t exist, re-install licences as described in Activating the software froma license on page 23

Do the steps in To check license errors with lmtools on page 53.

To investigate further: errors for floating licenses

If you are running a floating license, try these additional steps:

1 Stop and start the license server software as described in To set up your floating licenseserver... on page 19.

2 Do the steps in To check license errors with lmtools on page 53.

3 Restart the license server computer.

To investigate further: errors for hardware locks

If you are using a hardware lock, try these additional steps:

1 Restart the computer where the lock is plugged in.

2 Make sure you attached the hardware lock correctly. See Setting system hardwareproperties on page 8 for installation details.

3 On a node-locked computer or license server computer, make sure that the parallelport works. If you can print from the port, it is working.

4 Do the steps in To investigate further: errors for hardware locks on page 49

| 49

Example of a license log file

If you still have trouble with licensing, you can create a licensing log file to learn moreabout the error:

■ For a node-locked license, do these steps on the computer where the error messageappears.

■ For a floating license, do them on the license server machine.

To examine the license error log file:

1 From the Windows Start menu, choose Programs > Command Prompt.

2 At the command prompt, enter:

set FLEXLM_DIAGNOSTICS=2

3 Try to start AliasStudio by typing:

Alias.exe

Because you set the environment variable FLEXLM_DIAGNOSTICS, the attempt to startAliasStudio creates a licensing log file that you can open and examine.

4 To list the files in the current directory a page at a time, enter:

dir /p

The licensing log file is named flexnumber.log file, where number is the processidentification number defined by the operating system. If more than one flexnumber.logfile is present, choose the file with the latest time stamp.

5 To launch the Notepad text editor and display the contents of the specified log file, enter:

notepad flexnumber.log

The log file reports each license failure for all AliasStudio products, so it can be quitelong. For each product (whether available to you or not), an error message is loggedbeginning as follows:

FLEXlm checkout error:

6 Find the error message for the license that you are investigating and see Understandinglog file error messages on page 51.

Ignore other information in the file. If the message isn’t listed, call our Support Servicesdepartment.

7 Exit from Notepad.

50 | Chapter 6 Troubleshooting

8 After you no longer need the licensing log file, you can delete it by entering:

del flexnumber.log

where number is the number of the file.

9 Close the Command Prompt window.

Understanding log file error messages

When you create a licensing log file as described in the previous section, you can browsethe file to find error messages to help you identify a problem.

The most common error messages are explained below. If multiple errors exist, only thefirst one found is listed in the log file. In these explanations, the term license file refers tothe aw.dat file for node-locked licenses or aw_servername.dat (on the server) for floatinglicenses.

Possible solutionsError

Licensing diagnostic tools

To check your system configuration with winmsd

Windows Diagnostics panel providing system configuration information. To run this programsee Choose Start > Run, type winmsd, and press Enter to open the System Informationwindow. on page ?

To check license errors with lmtools

Licensing sometimes fails because your licensing software is using the wrong Flex ID / hostID (or server host ID). To verify that this is the case, you can use the lmtools program.

| 53

For floating licenses only, you can also use the lmtools program to check for errors notlisted in Understanding log file error messages on page 51.

1 Open the Com\bin directory. By default, the directory is at C:\Program Files\Common

Files\Alias Shared\Licensing\bin or Start > Programs > Alias > Common Utilities

> FlexLM Licensing Utilities (if AliasStudio is installed on drive C).

2 Double-click lmtools.exe.

3 Choose Configuration using services. Your license server should appear in the boxbelow this field.

Notes

If the license file is not in the default location, specify where it is. Choose the ConfigureServices tab, enter the license path under Path to the license file field, and then chooseSave Service.

On some Windows systems lmtools.exe and lmutil.exe may fail to retrieve the ethernetHOSTID, returning a value of ffffffff and causing pre-keying to fail. Obtain the PhysicalAddress of your system by running the ipconfig /all command from the CommandPrompt window.

Convert the Physical Address to an Ethernet Address by removing the dashes andconverting all letters to lowercase.

For example, a Physical Address of 00-C0-4F-8E-F6-C6 becomes an Ethernet Addressof 00c04f8ef6c6.

Contact Autodesk Sales Support, request a license, and provide them with the EthernetAddress.

4 Look under the System Settings tab to find out which host IDs are used by your system.

Use this table to find out which field to look at, and what to compare it to in the licensefile. The license file can be found at these default locations:

■ C:\FLEXlm\aw.dat for node-locked licenses

■ C:\FLEXlm\aw_servername.dat for floating licenses

(where servername is the name of the license server computer).

If the value in the system settings doesn’t match the value in the aw.dat oraw_servername.dat file, either:

■ You typed in the wrong server name in the aw.dat or aw_servername.dat file (useNotepad to correct the number)

54 | Chapter 6 Troubleshooting

■ You were supplied with the wrong license information (contact Autodesk).

To check for additional floating license errors

To customize and view a status report on the floating licenses:

1 Choose Configuration using services.

NOTE If the license file is not the default location, you must specify where it is. Choose theConfigure Services tab, enter the license path under Path to the license file field, and thenchoose Save Service.

2 Click on the Server Status tab.

3 Click on the Perform Status Enquiry button.

It shows whether

■ the license server is up and running

■ each feature line in aw_servername.dat is free of errors

■ the license count is correct for each feature

Examine these entries in the status information during the following steps:

| 55

License server status: 7111@servername License file(s) on servername:

C:\FLEXlm\aw_servername.dat: servername: license server UP (MASTER)

v11.4.100\ Vendor daemon status (on servername): sgiawd: UP v10.8

(where servername is the name of the license server computer).

4 In the top line, the number 7111 is a fixed value for the TCP port used internally bythe licensing software.

If you see a different number, make sure that you intend for that port number to beused. Otherwise, open the file aw_servername.dat and change the number to 7111.

5 In the next line of the status information, check that the correct path to the licensefile is listed.

NOTE If you didn’t install the license files in the default location, pay special attention thatthe path is correct.

6 The next line of the status information shows that the license server is running. If itisn’t, you’ll see an error message that begins like this:

lmgrd not running: Cannot connect to license server. The server (lmgrd) has

not been started yet, or the wrong port@host or license file is being used,

or the port or hostname in the license file has been changed...

■ Ensure that you have a valid license file with the correct name.

■ Keep handy the aw_servername.dat file, the Status information, and any log fileerror messages you examined previously. Call our Global Support Services departmentand provide them with this information.

7 Below the status information is a list of features in the aw_servername.dat file andwhether the clients can use the features.

An example follows:

Feature usage info: Users of Studiof: (Total of 3 licenses available) Users

of AutoStudiof: (Total of 3 licenses available)

This example indicates that six licenses are available: three for Studio (floating) andthree for AutoStudio (also floating).

If aw.dat or aw_servername.dat has a typing error, you’ll see a message similar to this:

Feature usage info: Users of Studiof: (Error: 1 licenses, unsupported by

licensed server) Users of AutoStudiof: Total of 1 licenses available)

Check aw.dat or aw_servername.dat for a typing error in the Studiof FEATURE line.

8 If the preceding procedure doesn’t fix the problem, call our Support Services departmentand keep the information from the preceding two steps nearby.

Confirming FLEXid dongle drivers installation (for hardware locks only)

For hardware locks, a FLEXid dongle driver enables communication between a node-lockedor license server computer and its USB or parallel port. The USB or parallel port connectoris where the hardware lock is attached.

From the initial installation start up window program choose Install Driver for HardwareLock to install onto your computer. To make sure the driver was installed, do the followingon the computer where the hardware lock is attached.

To check FLEXid dongle driver installation:

1 Open the folder where you installed the FLEXid dongle drivers software.

By default, this install folder is at C:\Program Files\Macrovision

Corporation\Macrovision FLEXid Drivers, where C: is the drive where the softwareis installed.

2 Verify that the install folder contains the following subfolders: flexid6, flexid7, flexid8,and flexid9.

3 If this is not the case, install the FLEXid dongle drivers as follows.

To install the FLEXid dongle drivers:

1 From the initial AliasStudio software CD installation window choose Install AliasStudio> Install Driver for Hardware Lock, or go to http://www.aladdin.comhttp://www.aladdin.com to download the latest driver.

2 Restart the computer.
