Headlights serve to improve visibility during nighttime driving conditions and inclement weather. They help drivers see and be seen by other motorists. When headlights are dull and cloudy, they can prove to be a safety hazard on the road. Fortunately, there are ways to restore headlights to their full effectiveness.

Driving during the day is easier than driving at night, when vision is easily compromised. A human’s visual field is much smaller in the dark, and it can be harder to spot road hazards, animals or people when driving at night. An im-properly lit driving area can make it much more difficult to see. It also impairs others’ ability to see your vehicle coming and going. The National Institute for Traffic and Highway Safety says the number one reason for severe nighttime accidents and reduced driving safety is dim or cloudy and improperly lit headlights. Also, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has found that nearly 4 out of 5 drivers drive with improperly lit headlights.

There are a few different reasons for poor headlight illumination. In many instances, the headlight lamp has burned out and the light is no longer working. Old bulbs may dim and fail to provide the same level of illumination as they once did. Oxidized and cloudy headlight cover-ings are also a known contributor to diminished headlight function.

Today’s headlight lenses are made from

plastic. While it may not be visible immedi-ately, road debris and weather conditions can put small dings and scratches into the lenses over time. These small damages can add up to covers that look dingy and dull. Cloudiness also occurs as the result of exposure to ultraviolet light. Although newer cars have lenses that are supposed to resist scratching and damage, some dulling may occur.

There are many headlight cleaning kits on the market that are quite effective at restoring the lenses to their original glory. Most of these kits use a series of buffers and polishers to gen-tly buff out scratches and rid the headlights of oxidation. Because headlight lens replacement may cost upwards of $200 per lens, the kits are much more cost effective.

A car owner can also perform similar main-tenance with just a few items from the hardware store and automotive shop. Employ incremental grits of sandpaper to clean the headlights with-out causing further damage. In addition, cutting compounds and surface cleaners can be applied with electric buffers to clean the sandpaper grit and any other debris caught in the headlights. Plastic polishers can further increase the shine of the headlights and make them look new.

The key to keeping headlights looking their best is to be on top of any damage taking place. Handling minor cloudiness is much easier than a complete headlight overhaul. Routinely inspect the headlights and check for damage.

By now, almost everyone knows the dangers of texting or talking on a cellphone while driving. But phones aren’t the only distractions drivers should be aware of. Experts say that anything that draws your attention away from the road can be a potential cause of an accident. That includes actions and situations as innocuous as snacking behind the wheel or postponing a bathroom break.

Most adults who drive regularly admit to engaging in distracting behaviors while behind the wheel, according to a Harris Interactive/HealthDay poll. Eighty-six percent eat or drink while driving, 59 percent use a hand-held cell-phone, 41 percent fiddle with their GPS device, 37 percent text and 14 percent apply makeup, according to the poll.

“Distracted driving can be deadly driving,” says Julie Lee, vice president and national director of AARP Driver Safety. “Researchers are finding that any type of distraction is risky, not just the ones we typically think of as dangerous, like texting or talking on the phone.”

In fact, a study led by Dr. Peter Snyder, vice president of research for Lifespan, a Rhode Island-based health system, found that a strong urge to urinate can impair your functioning as effectively as drinking alcohol or being sleep deprived. And the effects of hunger, thirst and tiredness on attention spans and reflex times have been well known for years.

Here are three other potentially distracting behaviors and situations that you might not view as risky:

Eating and/or drinking We all do it, especially when we’re in a hurry

to make an appointment, have skipped a meal or just can’t make it through the rest of the drive without a cup of Joe. But eating or drink-ing while driving involves taking at least one hand - and part of your attention - off the wheel. Consider the 2011 case of a woman in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. Police said she hit a guardrail and flipped her vehicle when she spilled hot coffee during her morning drive. Fortunately, she sustained only minor injuries.

Unrestrained petsMany pet owners think of their dogs as

their children. But while they’re diligent about buckling up the kids and grandkids, they don’t always secure their dogs while in the car. Allow-ing your pet to ride unrestrained - in your lap, beside you or in the backseat - is dangerous for you and him. A survey by AAA and Kurgo Pet Products found that 65 percent of respondents had participated in at least one dog-related distracting behavior while driving, such as petting (52 percent) or allowing the dog to sit in their lap (17 percent). Restraining your pet can help minimize driver distractions, restrict the pet’s movement in case of a crash, and protect pets from potentially being harmed by inflating airbags.

RubberneckingSlowing down or pulling over to get a better

look at an accident not only displays a lack of tact, it could also cause another accident. If your eyes are on the crash you’re approaching - or

passing - they’re not on the road ahead of you. As recently as August 2012, police in Greenbelt, Md., cited rubbernecking as the probable cause of a double accident that shut down a major

highway during morning rush hour. A Maryland State Police spokesperson told the Greenbelt Patch that police see rubbernecking accidents “all the time.”

Much like curb appeal improving the chances of a sale on your home, having a car that is presented well inside and out may boost the amount of money and potential of a resale on your vehicle. Even vehicle owners who don’t anticipate selling their vehicles in the near future should maintain the vehicles to ensure they are safe and sound.

After home and work, a car is where many people spend most of their time. As a result, a vehicle can easily become soiled, scratched or overrun with clutter. Maintaining the interior of your vehicle need not take much time or effort, but it should be done often enough to keep on top of the mess. Here’s how to start.

Remove ClutterThe first step in cleaning the interior is to remove the excess

items that may have accumulated in the car. Busy families tend to leave toys, books or clothing in their vehicles. There also may be discarded food wrappers or beverage containers. People who commute also may accumulate a number of items in their cars, including business materials. These items should be sorted through and put where they belong before tackling the rest of the cleaning work.

VacuumMuch of the dirt and debris that accumulates in vehicles can

easily be removed with a vacuum. A shop vac will have enough

power to thoroughly clean upholstery and mats. If you do not have one, visit a do-it-yourself car wash. Remove the floor mats and set them on a flat surface. Thoroughly vacuum the mats to clear them of dust, dirt, food crumbs and any other debris. Vacuum the floor of the car as well as any seat upholstery that may be a catch-all for crumbs. Using a soft-bristled vacuum attachment, you also can remove dust from the vents, speakers and the center console of your vehicle.

Spot cleaningSpills and stains do occur in vehicles, just as they do else-

where. Cleaning these stains may require a little elbow grease and a cleansing agent. Most automotive supply stores will sell upholstery cleaner designed for car interiors. You also can use a mixture of laundry detergent and water applied with a slightly damp rag or sponge. Go over each area that is soiled so you can devote adequate time to each stain. The same process can be used on the vehicle’s carpeting. Use a brush to really clean heav-ily soiled areas.

Leather upholstery can be more delicate than cloth uphol-stery. When cleaning a leather interior, use only products that are designed specifically for leather so as to avoid damaging the interior.

Console and dashboard detailingA barely moist cloth can be used to clean the plastic compo-

nents of the dashboard and consoles of the vehicle. The goal is to

wipe away any dust and any minor stains or sticky areas without saturating important electrical components. It is always better to spray polish or cleaning agents on your cloth than directly on the dashboard. In hard-to-reach-areas, consider using a soft-bristled paintbrush or cotton swabs to clean in crevices. Wipe down everything with a dry cloth or towel afterward.

WindowsHaving clean windows is essential to driving safely. Clean-

ing the windshield and windows is relatively simple to do with a glass cleaner spray and a lint-free cloth. Use caution when cleaning the rear windshield if it has a defogger/defroster grid on the window. These wires can be damaged easily. Clean with the direction of the defroster grid line.

Freshen the carPlace an air freshener or spray a product on the air intake

vent to eradicate musty smells in the car. It also is important to replace the cabin air filter periodically; otherwise you could be breathing in dust and dander that is trapped in the filter. These are the basic steps to cleaning a car’s interior. Other detail work can be done depending on your preferences and the make of the car. Routine maintenance helps others see you have pride in your vehicle and can ensure a better return on your investment down the line if you choose to sell.

These small damages can add up to covers that look dingy and dull. Cloudiness also occurs as the result of exposure to ultraviolet light. The 2013 Nissan Altima’s all-new exterior design starts with its wide, aggressive stance and dramatic front end styling. The new Altima’s interior defies midsize sedan convention, rivaling upscale luxury sedans in ambience and sophis-tication.

Like the exterior, there is a premium look and feel -- from the driver’s side cockpit to the front passenger and rear seating areas -- with extensive use of upscale, soft-touch materials and craftsman-like attention to detail.

A choice of two proven Altima powerplants -- the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder and 3.5-liter V-6 -- are offered for the new model year.

The 2.5-liter engine is redesigned to be lighter

and more efficient. Horsepower is increased to estimated 182 hp (from 175 hp), while torque remains the same at 180 lb-ft. The advanced, award-winning 3.5-liter V6 remains rated at 270 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Helping increase fuel economy with both engines is the next-generation Xtronic CVT. A full 70 percent of the parts have been redesigned and internal friction reduced by up to 40 percent. It also features new control logic and expanded gear ratio coverage, which helps reduce noise and fuel consumption while improving drivability and responsiveness.

The 2013 Altima is the first Nissan vehicle to offer NissanConnectSM, which offers Bluetooth

Hands-free Phone System and Streaming Audio via Bluetooth, along with available integrated Hands-Free Messaging Assistant, Pandora inte-gration, USB connection for iPod interface and other compatible devices and SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

Nissan unleashes the all-new 2013 Pathfinder, a complete makeover featuring a sleek, aerody-namically styled SUV exterior, a premium interior, class-exclusive user-friendly technology and a new unibody platform and advanced drivetrain.

The all-new design sheds 500 pounds of mass compared to the outgoing model yet maintains the Pathfinder’s SUV-ruggedness while delivering up to 26 miles per gallon on the highway. With its blend of capability, includ-ing class-leading standard towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, and modern amenities, such as a class-exclusive Around View Monitor, the 2013 Pathfinder is the next-generation SUV.

Getting into the second and third row has

never been easier. This innovative system lets the owner tilt and slide the 2nd-row seat even with a child seat still installed. The second row slides over 5 inches, which means more leg room.

Moving upscale in appearance, the new exte-rior styling presents a smart fusion of signature Nissan styling cues and dynamic strength. The look is adventure-ready with wheel-oriented muscular fenders and a strong, stable stance.

A panoramic dual-panel moonroof, with sliding opening front panel and fixed rear glass panel which extends over the 2nd and 3rd rows, combines with the large windows to create an open, airy interior environment.

All 2013 Pathfinders come equipped with an

advanced 3.5-liter V-6 engine matched with a next-generation Xtronic CVT. The engine is rated at 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. It is also the only vehicle in class with selectable 2WD, Auto or 4WD modes for the available intui-tive ALL-MODE 4x4-i system. The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder is offered four models: S, SV, SL and Platinum.

Base model estimated mpg: 20/26Estimated starting price: $28,270

2013

Nissan’s all-new 2013 Sentra focuses on class-above design standards inside and out, as well as efficiency in engineering.

The new Sentra is 150 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, yet has slightly larger overall dimensions and more interior room. The lighter and more aerodynamic new Sentra allows Nissan to use a more fuel-efficient 1.8-liter engine, which along with the next generation Xtronic CVT with sub-planetary gear helps deliver a 13 percent improvement in EPA combined fuel economy. With the FE+ models, Sentra achieves up to 40 mpg on the highway.

Sentra’s all-new design is elegant, modern and refined, reflecting a “professional” character

targeted at upwardly bound buyers who aspire to drive something more premium than some of the other designs in the segment. It adopts Nissan’s bold new signature trapezoid-shaped grille and large wraparound headlights with LED accents -- the only sedan in the compact segment to offer them as standard equipment. In the rear, LED taillights are also standard, which complements the sophisticated styling.

The 2013 Sentra’s sophisticated new look continues inside with a high-quality interior de-sign with materials not usually found in compact vehicles, including soft-touch instrument panel and driver’s door armrest, available leather-appointed seating and available Maple wood-tone

trim. Along with offering mid-size roominess in a compact-size exterior, the intuitive interior layout emphasizes driver control and class-leading seat comfort for all occupants.

Base model estimated mpg: 30/40Estimated starting price: $15,990

Enhancements for the 2013 model year include a new Premium Edition (replaces the previous Premium Package), which adds front

fog lights and Bose audio system with 7 speakers and subwoofer, along with automatic air condi-tioning, fog lights, power moonroof, auto on/off headlights and Nissan Navigation System. The 2013 Rogue is offered in three trims, S, SV and SV with SL Package. All Rogue models are available in all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive configurations.

Rogue’s dramatic exterior styling includes dynamically arched forms and powerful rear shoulder lines, enhancing both its sporty feel while providing an upscale, grown-up style in a

category full of toy-like compact SUVs.Rogue’s interior is designed to satisfy both

the functional needs of the buyers and their emo-tional needs -- including the versatility provided by a large 57.9 cubic feet of cargo space (with 2nd row seat folded down).

Nissan Rogue’s 2.5-liter 4-cylinder is rated at 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft torque, mated to Nissan Xtronic CVT, combining smooth, linear and responsive acceleration feel with high-efficiency operation.

The 2013 Lincoln MKX rolls into showrooms with enhancements that make it even more ap-pealing.

The MKX remains one of the segment’s most powerful crossovers. The Lincoln five-passenger crossover has best-in-class fuel economy and impressive standard horsepower. It also has stan-dard voice-activated SYNC with MyLincoln Touch, heated and cooled front seats, reverse sensing system and remote keyless entry and start.

The 3.7-liter V-6 produces 305 horsepower while delivering segment-leading fuel economy of 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway (the best among non-diesel offerings). The V-6 routes power through a six-speed automatic transmission that

can be shifted using standard paddles behind the wheel.

Expanded SYNC functionality includes standard operator Assist and local Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities for laptops and tablets. Curve Control is part of the MKX’s AdvanceTrac with Roll Stabil-ity Control. Curve Control helps drivers maintain control when taking a curve too quickly, an error contributing to some 50,000 crashes in the U.S. annually.

Available Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) uses wide-angle, short-range radar sen-sors to continuously monitor each side of the vehicle to detect when another vehicle enters the defined blind spot zone (within 45 feet). A light

appears on the corresponding side view mirror to indicate another vehicle is in the defined blind spot.

The available panoramic Vista Roof provides a movable forward sunroof and a fixed rear moonroof. Dual power sunshades can be used to block out unwanted glare.

Dramatic 22-inch polished aluminum are available for the 2013 MKX. These wheels expand the wheel offerings beyond the standard 18-inch rims and optional 19- and 20-inch choices.

Base model estimated mpg: 19/26Estimated starting price: $39,545

The all-new 2013 Lincoln MKZ premium mid-size sedan comes standard with more equipment and several segment-firsts.

The Retractable Panoramic Roof is a new signature feature for Lincoln. The 15.2-square-foot glass panel offers one of the largest open-ings available on any current sedan. The design maintains the structural strength of a steel-roof vehicle.

A sweeping roofline defines the new luxury sedan’s profile. The steeply raked windshield and lengthened backlight make for a sleeker and more flowing appearance that is 10 percent more aerodynamic than the model it replaces.

The crafted headlamp assemblies include

bright, energy-efficient LED lighting. The front headlights turn in sync with the steering wheel, providing enhanced visibility. At the rear, LED technology enabled a thin, distinctive full-width taillamp graphic.

Innovation and technology abound inside the new MKZ. Replacing the traditional mechanical transmission shift lever is a contemporary five-button interface. The individual buttons of Push Button Shift engage Park, Neutral, Reverse, and forward gears in two modes, Drive and Sport.

The MKZ’s key standard features include: Lincoln Drive Control, which orchestrates the performance of the Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) adjustable suspension, electric

power-assisted steering (EPAS), engine, trans-mission, Active Noise Control, traction control and stability control systems.

The 2013 Lincoln MKZ offers three distinct powertrains, including the MKZ Hybrid. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost delivers the performance of a traditional V6. Emphasizing performance and efficiency, the optional 3.7-liter V6 produces significantly more power than the previous MKZ V6 while improving fuel economy approximately 5 percent.

Base model estimated mpg: 22/33Estimated starting price: $35,925

The all-new 2013 Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover SUV that offers the best highway fuel economy of any SUV sold in North America, at 35 miles per gallon.

Under an expansive hood lies the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine that delivers more torque, improves fuel economy and lowers emis-sions. The new CX-5 delivers 155 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque.

With a choice of transmissions in either the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic, a 2,000-pound towing capacity and an optional all-new all-wheel-drive system, the 2013 CX-5 truly offers a little of everything for everyone.

A new five-point “signature wing” front grille commands the front fascia. Its black elongated trapezoidal pattern adds masculine depth while eagle-eyed, wraparound headlamps extend out. The CX-5’s sculptured body features taut, com-pact lines. Shapely front and rear fenders hug the sporty SUV’s 17- and 19-inch rubber-and-rim pairings, projecting a wide, low-slung stance.

Long and luxury-laced, CX-5 sits on a segment-leading 106.3-inch wheelbase, seats five and offers a cabin that is undeniably flexible. Not the first to offer 40/20/40-split rear seats, CX-5 simply does it better by offering the segment’s only fold-flat three-piece independent seats. A single-action topside button releases the left- and

right-side seats to fold down while a looped handled frees the middle seat.

An all-new 5.8-inch in-dash touch screen becomes the center of attention with intuitive phone, audio and navigation functions. Stream-lined steering wheel controls also enable a more straightforward operation of the infotainment system.

Base model estimated mpg: 26/35Estimated starting price: $20,695

The impressive 5-passenger Mitsubishi Out-lander Sport compact crossover enters the 2013 model year with numerous new improvements, including enhanced exterior styling and interior design features.

The 2013 Outlander Sport receives a number of exterior changes that give it a more sophisti-cated and refined image, such as a redesigned front fascia, new rear bumper design, and new chrome door trim accent.

All 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport models gain a variety of improvements within the crossover’s spacious and comfortable cabin: new seating fabrics, chrome accent front door molding, All-Wheel Control center console push

button switch, and cabin noise reduction from higher grade insulation material.

The design of the rear multi-link suspension has been improved for better ride comfort and handling, while the fuel-saving Electric Power Steering (EPS) has been augmented to provide an increase in steering feel for the driver. The Continuously-Variable Transmission calibration has been improved to enhance acceleration per-formance and provide a smoother shifting feel.

Powered by a well-engineered 148 horse-power, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, this powerplant is fortified with numerous advanced technologies to provide ample power with exemplary fuel ef-ficiency. The Outlander Sport in ES trim level has

this highly-efficient engine paired with a refined and user-friendly 5-speed manual transmission in standard guise while offering the CVT as an option.

The top-flight SE model is equipped exclu-sively with the high-tech CVT transmission, which offers a 6-speed manual sports mode controlled by paddle shifters behind the steering wheel for the driver. Each trim level of the 2013 Outlander Sport now comes with 18-inch alloy wheels.

The all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu provides customers with expressive design, advanced technologies, ride performance and fuel-efficient powertrains.

A wider stance, broad shoulders and an integrated rear spoiler bring a new athleticism to the 2013 Malibu and give it a more aggres-sive appearance. The new Malibu has a 4.5-inch shorter wheelbase and 62-inch front and rear tracks that are more than 2 inches wider than the model it replaces.

Exterior design cues include Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, projector HID headlamps, larger Chevrolet bow-tie badges front and rear, and new Camaro-inspired LED dual-element taillamps. The

look is complemented by a range of large 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels.

The new Malibu interior features an all-new dual cockpit design that creates an inviting, roomy and comfortable environment. The increased width of the new Malibu means a more spacious cabin.

A sporty four-passenger, five-door hatch minicar, the 2013 Chevrolet Spark is designed to excite first-time buyers and city dwellers with its bold styling and colors, affordability, the safety of 10 standard airbags, fuel efficiency and maneuverability.

While the Spark looks like a three-door hatch, designers disguised the rear doors by integrating the handles into the C-pillar area, giving Spark its sporty appearance without sacrificing four-door comfort and utility.

Air conditioning and power windows are standard across the Spark lineup. Color-coordi-nated interiors feature a lower instrument panel -- with a motorcycle-inspired gauge cluster -- and

lower center console for maximum visibility and storage.

The Spark is powered by a 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers an 85 horsepower. It is mated to a five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic transmission is available.

Spark’s body-frame integral structure is tight and stiff for improved driving dynamics. The electronic power steering, MacPherson strut-type front suspension and anti-lock braking systems are designed to deliver taut, tight handling char-acteristics that better connect the driver with the road and provide outstanding overall stability.

The 2013 Spark mini car is the only car in its segment to offer a 7-inch color touch screen

radio capable of displaying smartphone-based navigation, media and contacts for hands-free calling.

Attention-grabbing exterior finishes include Salsa, Jalapeno, Denim, Lemonade and Techno Pink, as well traditional hues such as Grey Area, Black Granite, Silver Ice and Summit White.

A hotter Chevrolet Sonic sounds off for 2013 -- the Sonic RS. The new RS amplifies the Sonic’s youthful style and driving experience with unique exterior and interior features matched with a turbo engine.

The 2013 Sonic RS is offered exclusively in the five-door body style. Chevrolet’s exclusive MyLink infotainment system is standard. It en-ables navigation directions downloaded through a smart phone to be shown on the radio’s large display, and offers the personalized connectivity of Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio.

The more-aggressive looking Sonic RS is available in Victory Red, Summit White, Cyber Gray Metallic and Black Granite Metallic.

One of the most-dramatic cues is the Sonic RS’s front fascia, which has a deep air dam design that enhances the car’s road-hugging stance. Vertical intakes at the edges of the fascia reinforce the wide, low proportion and house the fog lamps.

The 2013 Chevy Sonic RS is powered by an Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine that is rated at 138 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s matched with a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic.

Complementing the segment-exclusive turbocharged powertrain is MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bar, and a semi-independent, torsion beam axle-

mount compound link-type rear suspension -- featuring a robust, tubular V-shape beam -- with gas-charged shocks.

The RS is the only Sonic model offered with four-wheel disc brakes, which are partnered with a four-channel anti-lock braking system. The four-sensor system incorporates electronic brake force distribution, which balances braking perfor-mance based on such factors as road conditions and the weight of passengers and/or cargo.

All 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek models are powered by a 148-horsepower 2.0-liter BOXER engine, teamed to Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive via a five-speed manual transmission or available

Subaru’s 2013 Outback features a new, more efficient powertrain and debuts the new EyeSight driver-assist system, along with revised styling.

The 2013 Outback features a restyled front end, with new headlights, grille, front bumper and fog lights, for a more powerful appearance. Stan-dard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive distinguishes the Outback from crossover competitors, which generally offer all-wheel drive as an extra-cost option. The Outback continues with 8.7 inches of ground clearance, which is higher than many crossovers and some dedicated SUVs.

The 2013 Outback 2.5i models debut a new 2.5-liter FB series Boxer engine for increased performance and fuel efficiency. The new engine

produces 173 hp and 174 lb.-ft. of torque, com-pared to 170 hp and 170 lb.-ft. with the previous engine. More significant is that the new engine produces greater low-end torque across a broad speed range, making the 2013 Outback 2.5i mod-els feel more responsive in everyday driving.

Outback 2.5i and 2.5i Premium models offer a choice between a standard 6-speed manual transmission and the second-generation Lineart-ronic CVT. Outback 3.6R models continue with a 256-horsepower 3.6-liter 6-cylinder Boxer engine and 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.

The 2013 Outback debuts Subaru’s new EyeSight driver-assist system, which integrates

Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking and Vehicle Lane Departure Warning. EyeSight uses a stereo camera design developed by Subaru to provide a detection angle wider than that of radar-based systems.

Numerous enhancements to the body struc-ture, suspension and steering give the Outback an even smoother and quieter ride for 2013, while also helping increase handling agility. New, more comfortable seat fabric and a new light matte wood grain trim provide a sophisticated appearance.

Base model estimated mpg: 24/30Estimated starting price: $24,290

The 2013 Subaru Impreza provides a leading combination of standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, roomy interior, engaging driving perfor-mance and high fuel economy in the compact segment.

The 2013 Impreza conveys a bold, confident design that emphasizes its standard Symmetri-cal All-Wheel Drive performance. In profile, the Impreza draws focus to its wheels with powerful wheel arches.

The new-generation Impreza is the roomiest ever. Vehicle length and width remain the same as on the previous version for both sedan and five-door models, yet, thanks to a longer wheel-base (104.1 inches compared to 103.2 inches),

redesigned door panels, the new-generation Impreza offers increased hip and shoulder room.

The Impreza’s new 2.0-liter Boxer engine produces 148 hp at 6,200 rpm and 145 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,200 rpm. In the 2013 Impreza 2.0i, the responsive engine can be matched to a 5-speed manual transmission or the lighter, more compact second-generation version of the Lineartronic CVT.

Rich looking appointments and details abound inside the new-generation Impreza, including soft-touch materials for the dashboard, door trim and center console armrest. All 2013 Impreza models feature as standard a tilt/tele-scoping steering wheel, power windows, door

locks and side mirrors, a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat, outside temperature gauge, a multi-function display with fuel economy information, remote keyless entry system, security system with engine immobilizer, variable intermittent windshield wipers and a low windshield washer fluid warning light. Carpeted floor mats, an extra-cost option in many cars, are standard in all 2013 Impreza models.

New for 2013, Subaru offers the Forester compact sport-utility vehicle with standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. An upgraded audio system for Forester 2.5X features Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and audio stream-ing connectivity, iPod control caapbility and a

Hyundai’s third-generation 2013 Santa Fe crossover family introduces the two-row, five-passenger Santa Fe Sport and the Long Wheel-base three-row, seven-passenger Santa Fe.

The “Fluidic Sculpture” exterior of the 2013 Santa Fe invokes the impression of irrepress-ible motion through a new design concept called Storm Edge, which captures the strong and dynamic images created by nature during the formation of a storm. To create the illusion of constant motion, Hyundai designers use a three-bar hexagonal front grille, LED accents, low stance, rising beltline, black trimmed optional roof rails and wraparound taillights.

Both Santa Fe models feature the same

flowing interior look, designed for passenger functionality and comfort. From the heated rear seats and available eight-way power driver seat, to a standard 40:20:40 folding rear seat back, both boast flexibility and a pleasant cabin for all.

Available on 2.4-liter models and standard on Turbo and LWB models, is a push-button starter with proximity key and a Supervision Cluster with TFT LCD screen. A heated steering wheel and sliding second row seats are optional first-class touches on Santa Fe Sport and Santa Fe Sport 2.0T. The heated steering wheel is also optional on the LWB Santa Fe.

Santa Fe Sport buyers have the choice of a 2.4-liter Gasoline Direct Engine engine or a

turbocharged 2.0-liter GDI engine. Both engines have the ability to tow up to 3,500 pounds. With 190 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque, Santa Fe Sport 2.4 still manages outstanding fuel economy of 23 city and 33 highway. The higher output 2.0-liter turbocharged engine found under the hood of Santa Fe Sport 2.0T increases horse-power to 264 while also delivering excellent fuel economy. The top-of-line LWB Santa Fe is pow-ered by the highly acclaimed 3.3-liter V6 engine, which is also found in the Hyundai Azera.

The new Volkswagen Passat has created a new standard in the midsize sedan class with the space and comfort of many full-size models, offering remarkable, best-in-class, stretch-out rear-seat legroom and trunk space to match.

The 2013 Passat’s balanced proportions give it elegant and timeless styling, reflecting the new Volkswagen design DNA. The key identifying feature is the styling of its front end. The Passat’s grille is sculpted in a three-dimensional shape and makes a distinctive and elegant impression because of its strict geometry. Beneath the front bumper is a large, lower intake with a strik-ing honeycomb surface and available foglights housed at each end.

The Passat was designed and specifically tai-lored for American tastes and American lifestyles. There’s room for five adults to really stretch out in comfort. And with four large, wide-opening doors, getting in and out is a cinch.

The Passat is offered in three trim levels, S, SE and SEL, with a total of 15 equipment levels. For 2013, Passat SE and SEL models receive a new center console that incorporates rear air vents, a new cupholder design, and a revised front stowage area that has a hinged cover. All SEL trim models now have a rearview backup camera.

The 2013 Passat offers three drivetrain options: a responsive 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter

gasoline engine; a remarkably fuel-efficient 140-hp, 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel with 236 lb.-ft. of torque; and a powerful 280-hp, 3.6-liter VR6.

The Passat is designed to feature the kind of dynamic, involved handling and precise steering drivers have come to expect of a Volkswagen. The new Passat may be a big car, but it drives small.

The best-selling model in Volkswagen’s line-up receives a number of technology and interior comfort updates for the 2013 model year.

The 2013 Jetta features an unprecedented five engine options: the gasoline 155-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder; the 170-hp, 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder; the 200-hp, 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder; and 140-hp, 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel with 236 lb.-ft. of torque.

Starting with the popular 2.5-liter engine models, standard updates to the SE trim include chrome-trimmed interior switches, new decora-tive metallic trim on the dash and door panels, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and handbrake lever. Exterior enhancements

include a chrome radiator grille and chrome window trim.

The SEL trim adds a six-way power driver seat with manual lumbar support, sport-comfort driver and front passenger seats, and a soft-touch dash. A two-tone black-and-beige interior complements the changes for 2013. A new trim, SEL with Navigation, adds the acclaimed Fender Premium Audio System and the RNS-315 touchscreen navigation system to the very well-equipped SEL.

All 2013 TDI Clean Diesel models receive interior and exterior enhancements. All models now include power-recline driver and front pas-senger seats in addition to a leather-wrapped

steering wheel, shift knob, and handbrake lever. A new iridium trim enhances the dash and door panels. The exterior now features a chrome radia-tor grille along with chrome window trim. Later in the model year, all TDI models will receive a soft-touch dash.

At the front, the coupe-like incline of the windscreen and the consistent use of horizontal lines define the Jetta’s design. The horizontal blades in the grille, together with the blades in the lower intake, are designed to make the Jetta appear wider and more dynamic.

The internationally beloved Beetle momentum continues into the 2013 model year with the launch of the frugal TDI Clean Diesel model.

The 2013 Beetle offers three engines and transmissions: the 2.5-liter, 170-horsepower, five-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic; the 2.0-liter, TDI 200-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder diesel; and the 2.0-liter, TSI 140-hp with 236 lb.-ft. of torque, turbocharged four-cylinder engine with the ac-claimed DSG six-speed dual-clutch automatic or a six-speed manual.

The designers wanted to develop the latest Beetle around the profile of the earliest cars. It’s a car that respects the past but looks toward the

future. Placing the original Beetle and the latest car next to one another, it’s clear that the lines of the rear sections are nearly identical, but the overall look is bolder and more dynamic.

Three round gauges are arranged in front of the driver (tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge), providing all key information at a glance. A multi-function display is integrated in the speedometer, which is housed in the central position in the binnacle. The steering wheel is specially designed with optional painted accents in the spokes depending on the equipment line.

For 2013, the Beetle Fender Edition makes its debut in the U.S. market. A marriage of icons from the worlds of music and the automobile,

the Beetle Fender Edition stands out with unique interior and exterior styling.

Its distinctively painted dashboard features the quintessential sunburst color of Fender guitars, and the vehicle’s interior is accented with color-contrasting seams that complement the dash’s colors. Outside, all Beetle Fender Edition vehicles are painted in Deep Black Metallic.

ing and country living.Engineered to accommodate 4Motion all-

wheel drive, the Tiguan’s design reflects its ability to conquer all weather conditions. The squared-off wheel arches feature plastic surrounds to protect the paintwork, while the short overhang at the front allows a 28-degree approach angle.

The robust roof rails can accommodate an ar-ray of accessories such as bike holders, or kayak and surfboard carriers. The available towing hitch accepts an attachment to carry up to four bikes, or can be used to pull 2,200 pounds of jet skis, dirt bikes or ATVs.

For 2013, Kia Sorento’s utility and func-tionality are boosted by adjusting content to suit consumer needs more than ever before. Among the enhancements, the 2013 model year brings newly standard leather seating for the mid-level EX trim and a newly stan-dard third-row seat for the LX V6 trim.

In addition, the base Sorento LX trim now offers the optional UVO powered by Mi-crosoft voice-activated infotainment system based on the Windows Embedded Automo-tive platform. Available is a new, more robust LX Convenience Plus Package, including an eight-way power driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a First Aid Kit.

Prominently displaying the signature grille and wraparound headlamps exhibited

on all newer Kia models, Sorento offers an aggressive stance and sleek profile. The Sorento crossover utility vehicle provides a feeling of spaciousness with both five- and seven-passenger seating configurations, making the Sorento more versatile than most of its compact CUV competitors.

The Sorento offers three engines: an advanced 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder engine providing class-leading 191 horsepower and 181 lb.-ft. of torque; a 3.5-liter V6 providing class-leading 276 horsepower and 248 lb.-ft. of torque; and the affordable 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 175 horsepower and 169 lb.-ft. of torque.

All engines are coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission with Sportmatic shifting control. To further meet consumer needs, there is a choice of either front- or all-wheel-drive configurations.
