WHAT RIGHTS DO I RETAIN AS A JOURNAL AUTHOR? JAAD authors retain rights for a large number of author uses, including limited use by the employing institute or company as described below. The following rights are retained and permitted without the need to obtain specific permission from Elsevier. It is preferable whenever possible that the final publisher’s proof of the article in pdf or html format should be used to avoid manipulation of the article by others, accompanied by a full citation for the article placed on the article. These include: d the right to make copies (print or electronic) of the journal article for their own personal use, including for their own classroom teaching use; d the right to make copies and distribute copies (including via e-mail) of the journal article to research colleagues, for personal use by such colleagues but not for commercial purposes; d the right to present the journal article’s content at a meeting or conference and to distribute copies of such article in the final accepted version to the delegates attending the meeting along with a clear notation that the article has been accepted by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and copyrighted by the American Academy of Dermatology; d for the author’s employer, if the journal article is a ‘work for hire’, made within the scope of the author’s employment, the right to use all or part of the information in (any version of) the journal article for other intra- company use (e.g. training), including posting the article on secure, internal corporate intranets; d patent and trademark rights to any process or procedure described in the journal article that the author may already have; d the right to include the journal article, in full or in part, in a thesis or dissertation; d the right to use the journal article or any part thereof in a printed compilation of works of the author, such as collected writings or lecture notes (subsequent to publication of the article in the journal); and d the right to prepare other derivative works, to extend the journal article into book-length form, or to otherwise re-use portions or excerpts. d Explicit permission from Elsevier must be obtained for re-use of figures, tables, and charts with full acknowledgement of its original publication in the journal. d Authors retain the right to deposit the final accepted manuscript and/or the article as published by the journal online or in print, including HTML and PDF versions, on your institution’s digital repository and/or in particular repositories as may be required by the NIH. d Neither the article nor any portion of it may be used for commercial purposes.
