SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

Workshop Goals. Errors made in the design and conduct ofclinical trialscan make it impossible for the trial to provide a definitive answer about the

effectiveness ofa new approach. Poor design can thus lead to theabandonment ofpromising avenues ofrcscarch that are based on soundbasic scientific work and to delays in the introduction ofnew treatmentsinto the general practice ofmcdical oncology. ASCO and AACR haveresponded to this problem by designing a program that will

(1) Introduce clinical fellows in any oncology subspecialty as well as somemore senior oncologists to the principles ofgood clinical trials design; i.e.,give them the tools they need to conduct clinical trials that will yield clearresults which investigators can use to proceed to the next level of research.

(2) Expose young clinical scientists to the full spectrum ofchallenges inclinical research, from conventional antineoplastics to gene therapy, in theexpectation that they will then want to devote all or a portion oftheir futurecareers to some aspect ofclinical research.

(3) Develop a cadre ofwell-trained, experienced researchers whoseexpertise will foster better clinicaltrials design and thereby hasten theintroduction ofimproved agents for cancer therapy and prevention intoeveryday medical practice and patient care.

Scientific Session Fonnats. The workshop scientific program will consist

ofthree types ofactivities to serve a variety ofdidactic needs:

Lectures on specifictopics presented by experts in the field to giveparticipants a necessary overview ofthe field.

Small Group Discussion Sections on certain topics such as measures ofoutcome, combined modality trials, and inclusion ofspecial populations thatare essential to the success ofmany different kinds ofclinical trials. GroupsoflO-20 students will meet with a team ofcxpcrienccd faculty members toobtain this practical training. Each section will be repeated three timesduring the workshop.

Protocol Development Sessions during which each participantdevelops aconcept sheet for a clinical trial protocol. This exercise will allow

These scientists will notbe required to pay a registrationfee for the workshop, although they will berequired to pay a $75 activity fee. Junior faculty will also receivecomplimentary meals throughout the workshop and a stipend ofS600 tosupport their travel and subsistence costs.

Workshop Materials. All faculty members will contribute material to theworkshop syllabusto be distributedto all participants in advance of theworkshop. For each lecture and small group discussion section the syllabuswill contain the instructional objectives ofthe presentation, an outline of thetopics to be covered, and a bibliography ofrelevant articles and texts.

Continuing Medical Education.The American Society ofClinical Oncology is accredited by theAccreditationCouncil for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) tosponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

The American SocietyofClinical Oncology designates this continuingmedical education activity for up to 32 credit hours in Category I towardsthe AMA Physicians Recognition Award. Each physician should claimonlythose hoursofcrcdit thathe/sheactuallyspentin the educationalactivity.

Workshop Site. Workshop sessions will take place at the Vail CascadeHotel & Club, Vail, Colorado. While Vail is particularly famous for itsoutstanding skiing,a full complement ofsummcr recreationalactivitiesincluding hiking, golfing, fishing, and swimming are available a shortdistance from the Hotel. In addition, workshop participants will be able touse the well-equipped Cascade Athletic Club, which offers a variety of spaand recreation facilities including indoor/outdoor tennis, racquethall,squash, basketball, aerobics, nautilus equipment, steam rooms, whirlpools,andmore.

The Organizers will arrange for complimentary shuttle bus transportion forworkshop participants between the Denver International Airport and theVail Cascade Hotel on Saturday afternoon, July 26, and again on Fridaymorning, August 1. Those admitted to the workshop will receive theschedule ofthcse special buses, which are the only buses on whichcomplimentarytransportation will be provided.

Workshop Housing. All applicants accepted to the workshop must resideat the Vail Cascade Hotel & Club for the duration ofthe workshop andparticipate in all group meals. Fellows will receive the followingcomplimentary accommodations at the hotel: a hotel room to be sharedwithone otherworkshopparticipantandthreemealseachdaybeginningwithdinneron Saturday,July26 andconcludingwith breakfaston Friday,August 1. Fellows requesting other accommodations at the Vail Cascade

Hotel will be reimbursed only for the amount ASCO and AACR wouldhave been charged for the complimentary accommodations (approximately$80perday).

GENERAL INFORMATION

Selection ofPartlclpanta. The Organizing Committee will reviewapplications and accept participants from applications received from fellowsandjunlor faculty as described below. The Committee will base itsdecisions in large part on the letters submitted by the applicant and thesponsor. These documents will be scrutinized both for the information they

supply about the candidate and the assurances they provide about theparticipation ofthe candidate and his or her sponsor in the long-termevaluation ofthe workshop. Applicantswill be notifiedoftheir status byearlyJunc 1997.

Fellows. The Committee will award scholarships to 75 applicants who areclinical fellows in any oncology subspecialty. Applicants will be selected onthe basisofletters ofapplicationfromthe individualsandlettersofnomination from their supervisors or heads ofdcpartments. TheCommittee will seek a group oftrainees who have made outstandingprogress in their medical training, who have displayed an interest andcompetence in clinical cancer research, and who will come from a diverse

group oftraining institutions and personal backgrounds. Applications fromfemale and minority scientists are encouraged.

The 75 participants selected from this group will not be required to pay anyregistration fee for the workshop. They will also receive complimentaryairline tickets, hotel accommodations in Vail for the nights ofJuly 26through July 31, inclusive, and complimentary meals throughout theworkshop. Participants receiving scholarshipswill be required to sharesleeping rooms with other awardees. An activity fee of575 will be imposedon all participantsto offset the costs ofsocial eventsandcertaingroupmeals.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERSHIP

Candidates should be aware of the following responsibilities of membership in the AACR. Active members must pay annual dues. In 1997annual dues for active members are $175, $100 of which is designated forAACR journal subscriptions. QUALIFICATiONS FOR MEMBERSHIP

Active membershipin the AACRis open to investigatorswho live inthe Americas. Individuals who have conducted two years of researchresulting in peer-reviewed publications relevant to cancer, or who havemade substantial contributions to cancer research in an administrative oreducational capacity, are eligible. If a candidate has conducted research inan area of biomedical science related to cancer, he or she will qualify formembership. Evidence of patents relevant to cancer research may besubmitted as qualifications for membership in lieu of peer-reviewedpublications.

Corresponding membership is open to persons who are not residentsof the Americas. The qualifications for corresponding membership are thesame as those indicated above for active membership. Visiting scientistsfrom outside the Americas who intend to return to their countries of originby the anticipated time of election should apply for corresponding membership. All other visiting scientists should apply for active membershipand transfer to corresponding status upon leaving the Americas.

Graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, and physicians intraining who do not yet meet the above qualifications for active orcorresponding membership should apply for associate membership.Forms for associate membership are available from the AACR Office.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERSHIP

Associate members must pay annual dues in an amount to be determined by the AACR Board of Directors. Dues for 1996 have been set at$35 per year for residents of the Americas and $45 for residents of othercountries. For 1997 these rates are $45 and $55, respectively. If anapplication is submitted by August 31, the accompanying dues paymentwill be credited to the current year. Candidates submitting applicationsbetween September 1 and December 31 may indicate whether they wishtheir dues payments credited to the current or forthcoming year. Candidates should be aware, however, that associate members may sponsor anabstract for the annual meeting only if their dues for the current year arepaid. For example, an associate member submitting an abstract in November 1996 for the forthcoming annual meeting must have paid dues for1996. Each Fall the AACR will send to current associate members an invoicefor dues for the forthcoming year. The Association's By-Laws state that dues are payable foreach year in advance by January 1 of the year to which they should beapplied. An individual may be an associate member for a maximum offive years. Each year in which an individual pays dues will count as onefull year of associate membership. Thus, an associate member who paysdues for 1996 may retain associate membership until December 31, 2000.The Board of Directors may terminate the membership of an associatemember whose dues are in arrears for two years.
