303. Processing-properties-microstructure rela- tionships for laboratory-produced formcoke

Yaz F. Bilimoria (Senior Re,search Engineer, Inland

Steel Research Laboratories, East Chicago, IN 46312,

U.S.A.). L. J. Broutman (Department of Metallurgical and Muteriuls Engng., Illinois Institute of Technology,

Chicago, IL 60616, U.S.A.). The mechanical proper- ties of formcoke briquettes, produced in the labora- tory, were studied to determine the effects of some key processing variables on the properties. The mi- crostructural characteristics of the formcoke were correlated with the processing variables and the mechanical properties.

chemical cell was developed for the “in situ” ESR detection of redox reactions of carbon blacks in dis- persion. Under reduction conditions, a narrow ESR signal was observed in the oxidized carbon black, BP1300. The unoxidized precursor to the BP1300, CSX-99 did not exhibit this behaviour. However, ad- sorption of p-benzoquinone onto the CSX-99 gave rise to a carbon black which did generate a signal under electroreduction very similar to that observed with the BP1 300. These results are interpreted in terms of the electroreduction of surface functionalities and demonstrate a charge acceptance by certain carbon blacks.

304. Effect of electrically calcined anthracite electrical 307. NMR Spectral parameters of carbon and hydro- resistivity on cathode block properties

David Belitskus (Alcoa Laboratories, Alcoa Center, PA 15069, U.S.A.). Several lots ofelectrically calcined anthracite (ECA) differing in electrical resistivity (400-700pQ.m) were tested in bench-scale Hall cell cathodes. ECA having a resistivity of 500pQ.m produced cathodes with best overall properties. Opti- mum binder content increased with decreasing ECA resistivity. The 400 pQ .rn resistivity ECA performed differently from the other ECA samples in several respects.

gen in pitches used for electrodes in aluminum production

Pierre Ollivier (Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, France).

XIII. LATE PAPERS

B. C. Gerstein (Ames Laboratory, US Department of Energy, andDepartment of Chemistry, Iowa State Uni-

versity, Ames, IA 50011, U.S.A.). Two petroleum pitches and a coal tar pitch, judged to range from “good” to “bad” as precursors for aluminum production were studied by solid state ‘H and 13C NMR. Carbon aromaticity decreased with pitch qual- ity. Relaxation parameters of ‘H were interpreted on the basis of a model in which limited diffusion to paramagnetic centers dominates.

305. Properties of silicon carbide fiber T. Ishikawa, H. Teranishi and H. Ichikawa (Nippon

Carbon Co., Ltd., I-1 Shin-Urashima-cho, Kanagawa-

ku, Yokohama, Japan). We have developed Silicon Carbide fiber made from organo-metallic-silicon poly- mer (polycarbosilane). Polycarbosilane are spun to continuous long fiber, and converted to Silicon Car- bide fiber by heat-treatment in nitrogen atmosphere. The paper describes properties of Silicon Carbide fiber, its reinforced resin and metal matrix composites.

308. Carbon films prepared from a phenol formalde- hyde polymer precursor

306. The detection of charge exchange in carbon blacks with ESR spectroscopy

John R. Harbour and Mary Jane Walzak (Xerox Research Centre of Canada, 2480 Dunwin Drive, Mis-

.sissauga, Onturio L5L lJ9, Canada). An electro-

A. M. Lyons, C. W. Wilkins and M. Robbins (Bell

Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ 07974, U.S.A.). Thin, pinhole free carbon films have been prepared by the in situ thermal decomposition of a phenol formaldehyde resin. Homogeneous and reproducible film thickness, in the range of 0.3-1.5 pm, as well as complete cov- erage of surface features is achieved by spin coating substrates with a solution of the resin. Decomposition is effected by slowly heating the polymer films in nitro- gen or hydrogen ambients. Trigonal coordination of carbon atoms in the black, amorphous, films is in- ferred from spectroscopic and electrical mea- surements.
