� Allows a family to simply modify an existing activity

Using Daily Routines To Enhance Listening, Language and Speech

In general within all activities:

� Use silly sabotage!� Think out loud and

� Create an auditory cue for each routine activity

� Create opportunities to use voice in each routine activity

Cooking

• Sounds of the kitchen• Kitchen vocabulary, categories and concepts• Following directions-critical elements• Link to literacy with recipes and cookbooks

Meal Time

• Setting the table- critical elements and vocabulary expansion• Conversation: Formulating questions, turn-taking• Placemat Games • Describing textures, temperatures and tastes• Silly Sabotage- a huge bowl for cereal, or cereal without milk• Talk about the meal. What else do we eat for breakfast? What do we eat for dinner or dessert? • Have each family member tell one event from their day ?

Bed Time

• Whisper the last pages of the book• Describing and choosing pajamas• Reading bedtime stories- Mom reads one and child reads one• Sing night time songs • Choose and recite one nursery rhyme each night • Discuss the days events to model use of past tense• Talk about the upcoming days activities, making predictions• Sequencing the steps to get ready for bed and changing them

Running Errands

• Make a plan together• Maximize car time: sing songs, listen to books on tape, play category games, what doesn’t belong, Simon Says games• Seize the opportunity for vocabulary expansion-cashier, customer• Target retell and model use of past tense recalling the events on the way home• Name the stores you are planning to visit

Doing the Laundry

• Vocabulary: clothes, measuring, wet, dry, clean dirty • Plural and Possessive word endings• Following directions while putting it away- listening for critical elements • Describing patterns, differences and similarities • Laundry basket rides for presence and absence of voicing and eliciting vocalizations

Cleaning up

• Listening for descriptions of items to put away • Listening for 3 items at a time and sequencing them • Get organized! It’s an opportunity for categories and vocabulary growth. Each week, change the sorting topics
