14 Petra Unmasked Petra Kvitova, tennis’ youngest Grand Slam champion, is gradually revealing the personality behind her powerful game.

16 Mastermind Andy Murray is drawing on a more positive outlook as he works at delivering on his Grand Slam potential.

22 For the Love of the Game

Even as he faces ongoing injury challenges, Tommy Haas is determined to retain his remarkable longevity on tour.

36 His own Style Unconventional doesn’t

even begin to describe Alexandr Doglopolov –and that independent approach makes him both compelling and capable as he continues his rise.

28 Stronger Year by Year Bernard Tomic is adding

physical strength to his formidable weapons as he continues an impressive transition to professional success.

19 The Ticking Clock While several

30-something players are blooming late in their careers, others are facing impending retirement.

APRIL 2012

FROM THE EDITOR

One of the biggest rewards of reporting on tennis over many years is

watching a player showcase raw talent early in their career – often

in the lowest-key settings and with just a scattering of supporters –

then develop it to join the game’s upper echelons soon afterwards.

Amelie Mauresmo, competing on an outside court in the first round of

Australian Open 1998, was a case in point. The bespectacled 19-year-old was

ranked world No. 99 at the time and while she’d win that match over Silvia

Farina, significant finetuning was clearly required – a point proven when she

fell to Venus Williams two rounds later.

Still, there was something that made you stay and watch the young

Mauresmo, and a subsequent satisfaction when she became a surprise

Australian Open finalist the following year. Having seen her compete with

such spirit so early, that satisfaction grew when she went on to become a

Grand Slam champion and world No. 1.

There was a similar sensation while watching Alexandr Dolgopolov in the

first round of the 2010 Brisbane International. Most supporters were there

to catch their first glimpse of Australia’s next big thing in Bernard Tomic,

however it was the little-known Dolgopolov who proved both the victor and

the most fascinating player that day. While Tomic evened the score this

past Australian Open, there’s a sense we’ve only seen a fraction of what the

unconventional Ukrainian can deliver – and he relates as much himself in a

revealing story this month.

The flipside of reporting on tennis for so long is seeing entire careers begin

and end. Already this season we’ve seen Fernando Gonzalez and Ivan Ljubicic

announce their retirements and as a feature on 30-something players shows,

the clock is ticking for many more. There’s inevitable regret that such popular

champions eventually decline; at the same time tennis’ cyclical nature is

accompanied by the welcome realisation that every great champion has a

starting point – and sometimes it’s an ignominious one.

More than most, Tommy Haas has every right to consider himself unlucky. But the 34-year-old

German with the rock star good looks and blistering ground strokes has never been one to feel sorry for himself.

Despite suffering a shopping list of injuries that would bring a football team to its knees, Haas has worked his way back time and again with fearless determination.

“If I was a thoroughbred or racehorse I’d be shot dead already,” joked Haas earlier this year in Brisbane. “But I’m not a horse, so luckily I still have the chance to compete out there and I try to enjoy it as much as I can.”

Haas’ professional career began in 1996 and has netted him 12 ATP titles, one doubles title and the silver medal at the Sydney Olympics. No doubt all of this must have seemed a million miles away to the 11-year-old boy who arrived at Nick Bollettieri’s famed academy not knowing a word of English, let alone another person in the United States.

“To be honest when you are a young kid and you have a dream to become a tennis professional and you actually do it for a very long time, I’m very happy and very pleased,” he said.

“It’s a tough sport and the sport’s getting more physical each year I feel like and unfortunately I had a few surgeries in my career, a few injuries that needed surgery, it’s unfortunate in many ways but I’ve coped with it quite well.”

The fact that the one-time world No. 2 has made it back from so many career-threatening obstacles is something that he is proud of, but he also knows that this comeback may prove to be his farewell tour.

“I’ve come back from it in better ways than I would have imagined and now after this hip injury or surgery, being a certain age it’s another challenge that I’m happy to take on as long as I can and I know that one day this tour life that I’ve always wanted to do is going to be over, so I’m just going to

More than 15 years on tour is a feat of endurance for any player

but especially so for Tommy Haas, who lost months at a time

through a range of injuries. Yet even as those battles continue,

Haas retains his fierce passion to compete – which is welcome

news to his many fans. By Darren Saligari

try and enjoy it as much as I can and keep playing if my body allows me to.”

While some players lose their passion for the game or hunger for the fight, Haas has no such problem. For the three-time Australian Open semi-finalist the competitive fires don’t need stoking – they’re constantly burning, even off the court.

“When I was five or six years old I was competitive even if it wasn’t on the tennis court, I’m competitive off the court too, once you lose that competitiveness maybe it’s time to go.”

This raging competitive streak recently led to him taking up a challenge to ski to the bottom of a mountain. “Somebody didn’t think I could do it in two minutes and 30 seconds. I did. I was proud of myself but it was also stupid because it was quite fast, so if I would have not made one of those turns, who knows? I probably wouldn’t be here right now.”

Thankfully, Haas made it to the bottom in one piece and to Australia earlier this year – where he played in Brisbane and Melbourne – for perhaps the final time. And for the many tennis purists who delight in his free-swinging one-handed backhand and fearless forays to the net this is indeed sad news.

Struck down by a calf injury in Brisbane, Haas travelled to Melbourne where he found himself in a Rod Laver Arena second-round showdown with current world No. 2 Rafael Nadal.

There would be no fairytale, but Haas appreciated his moment in the spotlight and the opportunity to take to the court

with one of the game’s greats, who he had a message for as they shook hands.

“I just basically said that this might as well be my last time on Rod Laver Arena. Who knows if I’m back here and who knows if I ever play there again. You know, I just said that it’s an honour to compete against him, and I wish him well.”

Since that day in Melbourne, the world No. 169 has played just three matches – and two of them were losses.

“I feel fitness-wise and health-wise as good as I have in a long time … hopefully I can play one more full season on this body and hopefully just improve and see what else I can accomplish on the tour,” Hass told reporters after Germany’s 4-1 Davis Cup defeat in March.

So what’s left to accomplish? A win at a major is out of reach and Haas has stated that he is no longer chasing ranking points, so world No. 1 Novak Djokovic can rest easy. For Haas, all he’d like is to win just one more tournament to add to his 12 singles titles.

“I’d love to win another title somewhere, doesn’t matter which one it would be … I’m not really running after ranking points anymore or worried if I’m 180 in the world or

40th in the world or 10 in the world – I’ve done that, been there.

“A couple of times now I haven’t even had a ranking in my career and I came

back strong, so those little goals don’t

mean much to me anymore, but winning another title somewhere means you have to play your best tennis for a week and really see if you’re (up to it).”

And if the tennis gods could grant him just one extra wish, it would be that his 14-month-old

daughter, Valentina, would have the chance to watch her

dad play at the top level. But this, concedes Haas, “is going to be very hard”.

Hopefully, Haas’ body holds up so fans around the world can watch the dashing German in action one more time.

“At some point I (will) know when is the best for me to not compete anymore. I don’t feel like it’s around the corner. It all depends on mainly how the body is holding up. I feel like my strokes are still there, my ambition is still there (and) I’m still eager to win. All of those things are still there, which is great.” n

loveDid a second-round Australian Open loss to Rafael Nadal signal Haas’ final appearance at Melbourne Park?

Haas and long-time partner Sara Foster became parents to daughter Valentina late in 2010.

Still a fan favourite at age 34.

Silver medal success at the 2000 Sydney Olympics provided a career high point for the former world No. 2.
