What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out, 2017
“Mythology is for legends, not a person. I'm human,” says David Le’aupepe. “Mythology is for fucking rock stars and for rappers. Mythology is for people who want a fucking story to follow for the rest of their life. I'm just a bloke, fucking figuring shit out in public.” - David Le'aupepe
Gang Of Youths may be on the cover of Rolling Stone Australia this month, and headlining major venues like the Hordern Pavilion next month – but
frontman David Le’aupepe insists he’s not a rock star.
The charismatic, candid frontman of Sydney indie heroes Gang Of Youths does have a kind of origin story. This is what happens when you (and your
four best mates) write one of the decade’s biggest, most uplifting Australian rock anthems (‘Magnolia’) and most assured debut albums (The Positions) about big themes like death and love and faith, and then you tell everyone who asks exactly what it’s about.

GANG OF YOUTHS
What also happens, says Le’aupepe, is that you get a lot of things out of your system, and find yourself with another record to write, wondering if you have anything left to say.“And it turns out I had a lot to say. I feel there was part of me that was so broken and so empty and sullen, empty of life, that I just fucking need to talk about it. But it’s also things that I'm trying to embrace – love and life – for the first time in a long time. Where do you go after The Positions? You go straight fucking up.”
After the band came roaring back with the #2 charting EP Let Me Be Clear in mid-2016, they returned this year with ‘What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out’, which topped the TMN Hot 100 Alternative in March, creeping steadily up from a #9 debut; the band, now based in London and occasionally in New York, followed it up with the sly orchestral anthem ‘Let Me Down Easy’. They’re just two huge tracks on the album Go Farther In Lightness, released Friday, which sees the intimacy of The Positions blown out to a cinematic, almost overwhelming scale.
“I'm gonna fuckin’ die one day,” he says simply, “and I don't wanna half-ass anything.”While he appreciates the compliment, Le’aupepe finds the all-too-regular comparisons to Springsteen – or anyone – unhelpful overall (“they don't necessarily serve the artist that you're complimenting”) but it’s
telling that journalists and broadcasters keep reaching for the Boss as a touchstone as they struggle to articulate just what makes the Gang Of Youths cocktail so potent. A sense of wind-in-your-hair grandeur that never feels calculated or image-conscious, deft and revealing turns of phrase and narrative that slip between riffs as easily as the laziest rock’n’roll cliches, an emotional core that’s vulnerable and masculine, and thundering
crescendos that feel earned, cathartic and deliciously unrestrained – this is a recipe for sucking in everyone from casual commercial rock listeners in Hiluxes to bookish community radio devotees, especially when you’re sneaking in lines like “I got solipsism, baby, and I brought lemonade”.
It’s likely that not many of the fans who sent The Positions to #5 on the ARIA chart, or voted ‘Magnolia’ to #21 in the Hottest 100, could relate directly to being a recently divorced, near-suicidal 23-year-old Samoan-Jewish Sydneysider with a passion for Hegel and black metal. But while Le’aupepe may be name checking Greek demigods, cracking the five-minute mark on most of the songs on Go Farther In Lightness, and up to his trademark mane in intense personal revelations, the engine that drives his songwriting – the unadulterated struggle to live life well and form emotional bonds – is what audiences connect so deeply with.
“I was cursed with feeling deeply and unfortunately, the world was cursed with the fact that I can articulate it well,” Le’aupepe says wryly.
“I just feel the world is gonna be subjected to my nonsense until the market decides – or until the market realises – that I'm actually terrible.”

AUSTRALIAN SINGLES REPORT
An old pop favourite has registered a strong debut on the latest issue of TMN’s Hot 100, while ‘Despacito’ emphatically crashes out of the Top 10.
After servicing her highly anticipated new single to radio last week, P!NK’s ‘What About Us’ has been met with a warm reception from commercial. It scored a Hot 100 debut at #9 this week, the highest first-week position on the chart since Harry Styles’ arrival at #3 in April.
Turning our attention to the top, Liam Payne notches his fifth unbroken week in charge of the Hot 100. ‘Strip That Down’ ft. Quavo has proven to be more stubborn at the top than originally expected.
Radio appears to be shifting gears after it seemed ‘Despacito’ could do no wrong at commercial. The track finds itself down at #19 this week – the Bieber-featuring remix slid 15 places in three weeks after holding down #1 for four consecutive weeks.
While a debut at #34 followed by a sprint to #9 looked like positive signs for Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy, ‘Lay It On Me’ has been receding slowly ever since. It now looks unlikely that the track will reach the same stature as ‘Riptide’ or ‘Fire And The Flood’.
There are some seriously stellar singles headed to radio this week. Assuming they haven’t already jumped on both, the new Justin Bieber & Bloodpop jam ‘Friends’, as well as Miley Cyrus’ ‘Younger Now’, are the clear contenders for Most Added.
Olly Murs takes another crack, this time with ‘Unpredictable’, a neat little collaboration with Louisa Johnson that ticks all the right boxes. A great cut from Sabrina Carpenter ,’Why’, will potentially make its way to playlists too.
P!NK manages to just pull ahead at #1 on this week’s Most Added chart. ‘What About Us’ was neck and neck with Avicii’s ‘Without You’ ft. Sandro Cavazza for most of the week but in the end came out on top. Both saw nearly identical adds but a few outliers, including the Triple M regional network, gave P!NK the leading edge.
While the bulk of radio’s weight was thrown behind those two singles, there are still some noteworthy entries. At #3 is Lauv’s ‘I Like Me Better’ while Portugal. The Man finally crack Australian radio at #4 with ‘Feel It Still’. It’s been making waves in the states with a #1 on the Billboard Alternative Chart as well as a two-month stint on top of the Billboard TV Commercials Chart.

In a surprising twist, it isn’t a new single that is the Heatseeker this week: well-established banger ‘Chameleon’ by Sydney’s PNAU takes the title with a move of 32 places to #67 from #99. And Thomas Rhett holds fast atop the Breakers chart for another week with ‘Unforgettable’, still poised to crack the Hot 100.
For the first time in months, there isn’t a One Directioner on top of a single Top Spins chart. While Liam Payne’s ‘Strip That Down’ ft. Quavo may still be topping the Hot 100, it’s P!NK’s new ‘What About Us’ that tops two Spins charts, KIIS and HIT.

AUSTRALIAN & INTERNATIONAL DIGITAL CHARTS
‘West’ is the second single released by Melbourne based musician, Lakyn. The song is about Lakyn’s own ambition and self-worth – it’s about not getting too comfortable in any one place, and always pushing yourself to work harder, to do better. You can hear this thirst and struggle in the song: there’s a darker, harder tint to this side of Lakyn. The guitar lines battle throughout the song like they’re sound-tracking a standoff between the two sides of Lakyn himself.
‘West’ follows the release of his single, ‘View Looks So Good’, which has had spot play on Triple J and also had a killer remix produced by Kuren (winner of Triple J Unearthed NIMAs Competition in 2016) which was premiered on Stoney Roads.
Lakyn is now filming the music video for ‘West’, working with director Sunny Leunig (Courtney Barnett, Dan Kelly, Paul Kelly). He recently played his sold-out headline show at Melbourne’s Workers Club and will this week be announcing his headline shows in October.

The first single from P!NK’s forthcoming album Beautiful Trauma has stolen the top spot on the Shazam Movers chart this week, as well as coming in at #2 on the Shazam Future Hits chart. Not only has ‘What About Us’ almost topped two of TMN’s predictive charts this week, but it’s also debuted at #9 on the Hot 100, is the top spun track on both KIIS and HIT networks, and is this week’s #1 most added to radio.
Louis Tomlinson’s track ‘Back To You’ ft. Bebe Rexha and Digital Farm Animals is back at the top spot for both Spotify Viral and Shazam Future Hits charts.
Meanwhile, Camila Cabello’s two latest singles, ‘OMG’ ft. Quavo and ‘Havana’ ft. Young Thug, are sitting at #8 and #9 on the Shazam Future Hits chart respectively.

OVERVIEW
Odette is a singer, songwriter and self-taught pianist hailing from inner-west Sydney. With Zulu heritage on her mother’s side, and a long line of English jazz pianists on her father’s side, Odette was born with music in her soul.
Captivating in presence, Odette’s songs are deeply personal and see her flutter from spoken word into warm, soulful vocals, with arrangements circling soul, jazz and pop.
‘Watch Me Read You’ is Odette’s debut release, which she worked on with LA-based, Grammy nominated producer Damien Taylor. The track will have its debut performance at this year’s BIGSOUND Festival.
