AUSTRALIAN SINGLES REPORT

There is an abundance of movement across the Top 10 on this week’s Hot 100 chart. The only spot remaining steady is #1, which once again belongs to Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s Despacito (Remix) ft. Justin Bieber.

Deeper into the Top 10, Miley Cyrus’ Malibu, Liam Payne’s Strip That Down and David Guetta’s 2U ft. Justin Bieber all hit new peaks, the latter making a considerable jump from #22 to #6. Guetta’s last Top 10 single was way back in December 2015 when he teamed up with Sia and Fetty Wap on Bang My Head.

Still riding high from the critical adoration inspired by her 2015 album E•MO•TION, Carly Rae Jepsen is making a fresh play for the chart domination she deserves with Cut To The Feeling.

The track has already received high acclaim, with SPIN declaring it the best songs of 2017 so far. Jepsen is all too familiar with the Hot 100, Call Me Maybe having spent eight consecutive weeks at the top of the Hot 100 in 2012.

It’s a potent addition to Jepsen’s stacked catalogue of killer singles which has already mustered up 850 million streams and 25 million downloads worldwide.

DJ Khaled had another high-powered collab snapped up by Australian radio last week. This time it’s Wild Thoughts, which features Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. Not surprisingly, the track was jumped on by Nova, KIIS and the entirety of the Hit regional network, seeing adds from a total of 154 stations.

Another Sony release, Calvin Harris’ Feels ft. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean, was always going to make a strong claim at radio. It panned out just as expected, being playlisted by the ACE Radio Network, Ash London LIVE and Smallzy’s Surgery.

Releasing music without Ryan Lewis for the first time since 2009, Macklemore’s team up with Skylar Grey also made a splash at radio last week. Glorious gained the attention of radio networks nationally and is sure to make an impact on the charts over the coming weeks.

Sheppard are making a leap to a new brand of 80s funk on their new single Edge of the Night.

A standout from their stadium shows with Justin Bieber in Australia, the song makes its international debut as the band hit arenas throughout the UK with Little Mix this month.

“Edge of the Night isn’t your typical Sheppard track,” said George Sheppard. “It’s a tongue in cheek funk pop throwback to house parties and old school vibes. It’s an opportunity for us to let our hair down and try something completely different.”

Edge of the Night comes off the back of the band’s return to Australian radio with their most recent track Keep Me Crazy which saw Sheppard become the #1 Australian act on iTunes and Shazam, racked up 5 million Spotify streams, and was Top 20 for radio airplay.

Alestorm has managed to prevail at number one again this week, making this the third week that Fucked With An Anchor has dominated the Spotify Viral chart. The track has reached over 600,000 streams on Spotify and over 700,000 views on Youtube. Also spotted on this week’s viral chart at #3 and #4 are the two songs at the centre of a YouTuber feud: Jake Paul’s It’s Everyday Bro, and Ricegum’s diss-response track It’s Every Night Sis ft. Alissa Violet.

Liam Payne has officially lost his top spot on the Shazam Future Hits chart with Strip That Down after two weeks, as David Guetta’s 2U ft. Justin Bieber is sweeping the charts at #1 on the Future Hits and #2 on the Spotify Viral chart.

A series of new singles can be seen on this week’s charts. DJ Khaled’s Wild Thoughts ft. Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, Calvin Harris’s Feels ft. The Jungle Giants’ On Your Way Down is sitting at the #1 spot this week on the Hot 100 Alternative Chart. The same track has also nabbed them #3 on the triple j Hit List, and has been the #1 spun song on triple j this week.

Peking Duk’s most recent single, Fake Magic ft. AlunaGeorge, remains at the top spot this week on the Australian Hot 100, and has also taken the #2 spot on the triple j Hit List.

There’s no movement in the #1 spots for either the AIR Radio or AIR Singles chart; Sia is heavily featuring across both with her tracks Reaper, Cheap Thrills, The Greatest, and Chandelier (which was just certified 3x Platinum in the US by the RIAA this week).

The triple j Unearthed chart this week features five new artists, including four-piece indie rock band The Paddy Cakes, who have scored both the #1 and #2 spots with Never Tell and Red Raw.

In her first release since EP Highway Songs No.2 Jack River moves into alt pop territory with a song filled with glitter, grit and the feeling of moving on from a dream that’s lost its sparkle.

Keeping true to her evokative, yet bold lyrics, River jumps straight in, asking “You don’t like rollercoasters, how could you ever love a girl like me?”. Born on a lonely walk through the streets of New York, the song reflects the sounds of the early 2000s, inspired by Weezer, Tame Impala and MGMT. The track is accompanied by a dreamy video directed by Matt Sav (Tame Impala, POND) and Jack River. Shot in Perth the clip features various characters that depict the numerous fragments of emotion within the song.
