AIOTn e w s l e t t e rPresident - Mr. Terry JamesMy name is Terry James I am employed as an Orthopaedic Technician ,I have been a member of the Bundaberg hospital for 29 years, I hold a certificate IV in Cast Tech-nology along with certificates in level 1-5 in all orthopaedic applications. Being a or-thopaedic Technician enables me to impart my knowledge and skills in the treatment of orthopaedic injuries, along with the training of medical, nursing and operational staff.

I have recently been appointed President of the AIOT my charter will be to build the profile of the association in all states, I believe we can achieve this goal by all members having an active input in all association matters.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like any information with regards to our association, and I hope to catch up with you at the Townsville education weekend on the 23rd & 24th of June. Cheers Terry James,Orthopaedic Technician.Bundaberg Hospital

Vice President - Mr. Greg GysinIn 1980 I attained a position with the Townsville Hospital as a casual orderly, six months later I was appointed permanent. Shortly after that I applied for a position in the operating theatres as an Operating Theatre Assistant (OTA). At this stage I had no experience and basically was thrown in “at the deep end.”

I developed an interest in anatomy and physiology especially related to to orthopaed-ics and soon after found myself solely working in the orthopaedic theatres. I gained many skills in basic casting during this time, including the fundamentals of casting. Eventually applying the majority of casts in theatre. Over the years I have stepped in and out of theatre to cover the clinics and ward casting which led to the Townsville Hospital Institute of Surgery offering me the position of Senior Orthopaedic Techni-cian in Charge, a promotion which I happily accepted. This took place in 2010.

Over the years I have been heavily involved in education and presented many educa-tional sessions covering both the theroetical and practical components of our profession. I was chairman of the AOTA Education and designed a a five-level training manual for orthopaedic technicians. I personally wrote two thirds of the manual, but was ably helped by other AOTA members. This manual is is still presently used throughout Queensland as a valuable resource when training orthopaedic technicians. In July 1997, I was one of three people invited by Austaid to do a two week tour of PNG through the Australian College of Surgeons . The purpose of the tour was to teach the latest techniques in trauma slabbing and casting, workshops were conducted in Port Morseby, Lae, Madang, Goroka, Mt Hagan and to Rabaul ,which is on the Island of New Britain. I found this to be a great experience and in 1999 I was asked to return to PNG for a second, two week tour.

Eventually I caught up with my old friends and acquaintances Mr. John Kinealy, Mr. Glenn Brown and Mr.Robert Vragovski from the AIOT. I was impressed personally and professionally by the knowledge and aspirations of this organization, and soon after I joined. In 2004 I obtained my Certificate IV in Cast Technology through the AIOT and ICM. I also hold the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
