The Sunday technical bus tour is open for bookings. We have a strict limit of 40 delegates, so you will need to act soon to get on the bus. What’s on the program?- Visit an award winning riverside landscape designed around the local Aboriginal six seasons alongside the new Optus Stadium Perth. - Next see the wildflowers in spectacular bloom at Kings Park and Botanic Garden. A highlight for plant lovers will be a conducted tour of the Kings Park Grevillea breeding program cur-rently one decade into a 30-year program that will set the agenda for new introductions for the 21st century. - Later we will be shown over the White Gum Valley Project, an internationally recognised urban development demonstrating com-munity wide energy sharing, water harvesting and clever horticul-ture. Lastly we walk along streets of the CBD looking at Green walls and roofs growing in one of the driest climates in the world.

Coming across for the conference, take a few extra days to see the wonderful WA wildflowers where they grow and experience wine from the premier districts including the Swan Valley, Margaret River and Franklin River. Tourism WA has local area websites to make it easy to make the most of your time in WA whatever your budget. Here are the websites you can access to guide your WA journey and connect to tour suggestions and operators in each of the regions.

One of the great attractions of WA in spring is that the famous wildflower season. There are many ways to enjoy this unforgettable spectacle. You can enjoy a half day wander around Kings Park overlooking the Perth CBD, a trip to the Coral Coast or to the wine-famous Margaret River region to see the colour and form of these remarkable plants where they grow naturally.

Members CornerNew member’s project -Phillip Johnson Landscapes - Phillip Johnson graduated from the University of Melbourne with a horticulture degree and proceeded to create his own business. Since starting his practice more than 20 years ago, he has really led the way in Australian native, naturalistic gardens and swim-mingpools/billabongs design using environmental principles and with a focus on providing habitat for local non-human creatures too. Phillip is passionate about connecting people back to nature, immersing them in the beauty of a natural environment and relaxing the mind. Creating habitat biodiversity in urban environments that supports frogs, insects, birds and bees.

The cliff edge build in Tamarama NSW is a true testament to this, the site was built down a narrow stairway of over 60 steps and is overlooked by apartments, before the build was complete the local wildlife started to move in, with a Kookaburra flying in for a look and dive into the water, the client advising it was the first time they had seen a Kookaburra in the garden.

Dear Members We are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Greg Stephens MAIH RH as Regional Convenor Victoria, Australian Institute of HorticultureGreg is a passionate gardener - and has been a member of numer-ous garden clubs/plant societies over the years. He completed a Graduate Certificate in Landscape Architecture at Melbourne University and is currently studying a Post-Graduate Diploma in Landscape Architecture. He has a background in learning and development and profession-al development and has a business in that field. He is a former National Manager Continuing Professional Develop-ment at the Australian Institute of Architects and current Chair National CPD Committee at Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.Greg is also a member of the Australian Institute of Training and Development ( MAITD)Greg is a learning and development practitioner who has under-taken hands-on design and delivery roles (training, workshops), contract management of providers and management of strategic Learning and development functions, notably in the public and not-for-profit sectors. Greg Stephens

Brisbane Botanical Bazaar, 4 August 2019

Note: Convenor appointments are for a period of 2 years and other regional groups within Victoria will be formed as members to assist come forward.

NSW North coast convenor, Patrick Regnault and Kris Pierce attended the Bazaar shown here at the AIH stall.

The Bazaar was held in Nerang, Gold Coast South East Queensland. AIH held the plant clinic stall as well as providing a speaker for the hour long Q&A panel. The plant clinic was a great success and helped raise profile of AIH as well as with the general public.Questions were varied with the obligatory ones about citrus of course. We got interest from potential new members but, as importantly, interest from the public in understanding the importance of employing suitably qualified horticulturists and in particular our members.Next to our stall was the Young Hort stall held by Katanah Jas, an AIH student member and Recipient of the BBM Horticulture Award 2018, as well as John Mason MAIH from ACS who shared his time with helping the AIH stall and kindly provided coffee and food to the two stalls. The future of the industry hinges on the next generation being involved in decision making and being supported in future leadership roles.AIH does play an important role in mentoring young people in the various aspect of horticulture. Our Regional conveners play a key role in this domain through organising meetings, helping young people find suitable employers and in the mentoring scheme we are creating. Patrick Regnault, MAIH Registered horticulturist.

Other newsSince the 1st of July 2019 the ATO has started a new way of reporting employees’ tax and superannuation, the Single Touch Payroll (STP). Large employers or those already using a payroll software should not need to change anything. Small employers, 19 or less employees, need to report STP any time before the 30th of September. Micro employers, 4 or less employees, have additional options such as using a no cost or low cost Payroll software or quarterly reporting through their accountant.

All employers should have been made aware of this by their accountants. The ATO seems to assume that access to internet is available to all anywhere and anytime. Bookkeepers and ac-countants have raised concerns with the ATO about the lack of or patchy internet services in some country areas.

There are many software which for a basic $10 per month will do STP ready Payroll for up to 4 employees. If you are not familiar with them or if technology is not your strong suit, it is easier once you have set up yours and your employees’ details to ask a friend or colleague to walk you through the first couple of times.

This new, more direct method of reporting is effective for the Tax Department but it may be wise to keep the old paper trail going as well.

For more information contact your bookkeeper, tax agent or visit the ATO website

Upcoming eventsWayne van Balen, MAIHcompiles the monthly events calendar.

Please Note: New Workshops for ACT and Southern Highlands are to be an-nounced in the near future. We are also working on reinvigorating activities in South Australia. Western Australia are focused on the wonderful conference programme coming up in September, then workshops going forward will be planned. Regional Convener Patrick Regnault has been convening workshops in the NSW Northern Rivers and Qld Gold Coast with the assistance of John Mason. We are passionate to create a great programme for Brisbane/Sunshine Coast over the next 12 months and believe that a new group on the Mid North Coast (Taree/Port Macquarie) will be viable.

Princess Magnolias are new to the market and have been bred in Australia and selected for their quick, tidy growth habit and mag-nificent perfumed flowers.

So many flowers you can hardly see the leaves! Cinderella is an evergreen tidy shrub, flowering in winter-spring and again in summer-autumn. Flowers are creamy white, lightly perfumed and contrast beautifully with the deep green leathery foliage. Can be grown as a small tree to 5m but is easily maintained as a 2-3m screen or hedge.
