• setting national expectations• connecting teachers across country• resource developmening and sharing• national conversations about what

young Australians should learn.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
3 mins Why have a national curriculum? It makes sense to set expectations for learning (as much as it makes sense to do so by state and territory) Allows for a greater focus on the quality of teaching – how, not just what – sharing of resources, information and teaching styles eg scootle, ABC splash etc Helps students whose families move for work or other purposes Connects teachers and students across Australia Difference the AC is making / can make story about maths teachers talking about how they teach not what they teach; sharing of resources and strategies to improve learning outcomes; sparking conversations about what is happening in schools nationally. What is the Australian Curriculum? The Australian Curriculum sets out what all young people should learn as they progress through school. The curriculum provides a foundation for the future learning, growth and active participation of young Australians. The Australian Curriculum acknowledges that the needs and interests of students will vary and that schools will plan from the curriculum in ways that respond to their needs and interests. Key messages about the Australian Curriculum Rigorous national process Best talent Extensive consultation High quality World class Nation building Set national expectations Transparent process

Presentation Notes
5 mins ACT will integrate all content descriptions into local courses. Tasmania will reference appropriate content descriptions in local courses. Queensland is still undertaking stakeholder consultation but has indicated that their development of courses is based on a principle of alignment with the Australian Curriculum and that their courses will integrate curriculum content and achievement standards. South Australia and NT – too early to advise. Victoria has undertaken consultation with stakeholders in relation to integration and has provided approved directions for the development of Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) studies in English, mathematics, science and history. These VCE studies will be informed by like studies from international jurisdictions as well as the proposed related Australian Curriculum subjects. Western Australia is following a policy where the content of the Australian Curriculum is adopted and adapted for implementation. The majority of content of the Australian Curriculum has been retained with only minor changes in most subjects and moderate changes in some. NSW has indicated that there is an identifiable one-to-one relationship of the Australian Curriculum science and history subjects and existing NSW syllabus structures but that the structure of Australian Curriculum English and mathematics subjects will provide a greater integration challenge.
