Australian Boating (‘AB’) is carefully positioned to beevolutionary rather than revolutionary. It embraces thereader and advertisers who now recognise the sweepingimpact of internet-delivered reading and publishing -especially offline, PDF magazines like ours. The opportunity of registering and then receiving thisbeautiful PDF magazine through the internet for just $39for six issues, or $69 for 12 issues, provides a verycompelling reason to persuade even the toughest oldsalt to acknowledge the change from printed mags innewsagents or via direct mail, to offline reading deliveredso reliably, so quickly through the internet.

Australian Boating still addresses the common needsof different levels of boat ownership (electronics, seamanship, engines, etc) under one comprehensivetitle - but allows the editorial team to really exploreAustralia’s complex boat ownership aspirations anddiversity in a much bigger magazine with extensive, on-demand streaming video involvement.

Moving pictures - videos - are taking marinejournalism in a completely new direction.

The readers love ‘em - and in 2018-19 we’reexpanding our video world in several directionsto further embrace the video production world.

The timely advent of go-pro cameras, dronesand powerful video production software, hasensured that amateur video production willcontinue its rapid evolution - and open up newlevels of video journalism by the professionalsexcited by the amazing array of app-based‘tools’ at their disposal.

Both amateurs and professionals need outletsfor their work - and Australian Boating isbeautifully positioned to provide the outlet fortheir work - in all sorts of marine activity.

We believe video productions like these are re-shaping the marketing of marine products, and AB is geared to provide the stage.

The State by State percentage breakdown shown is

based on the actual paid subs.

This figure is now (2018) growing slowly but steadily,

with growth averaging 4-5% p.a.

Paid subscribers are scattered right across Australia,

with a weighting towards country and regional areas.

In fact, about 20% of the Paid subscribers live and

work in really far-flung corners of Australia, be it in the

rural, fishing, or mining sectors, or in the many

government instrumentalities based in outlying areas or

regional communities. We also have many ADF

subscribers in postings all over the world.

Despite our determined social media program in

2016-17, we observed only modest growth in new

subscriptions, and most of those were original AB & F&B

print readers ‘discovering’ us again via Facebook,

Linkedin, Instagram & Twitter. Through 2018, our social

media activities will feature the magazine’s top

personalities, promoting the strength of the AB editorial

team’s “hands-on” experience and credibility, in a bigger,

more diverse magazine now re-focussed on AB’s

traditional mixed power and sail editorial.

** Working with our family of clients, we do up to halfa dozen free give-away AB mail-outs each year to asmany as 20,000 direct mail, current listings.

For 2018-19, AB has returned to therecognition that 85% of all boats inAustralia are under 7.5m long, andfishing is still the key incentive forsmall power boat ownership. We’respearheading AB’s new directionswith reknowned fishing author andTV presenter, Steve ‘Starlo’ Starling, and master fisherwoman and socialmedia personality BrookeFrecklington, in the newly formalised“Trailerboat Fisherman” Section. This began anew in AB July #260and will remain a permanent feature.

Offsetting the “Trailerboat Fishermansection (effective from Julymagazine, too), is the new formallystructured “AB Sailing” section, headed by Di Pearson, who iscurating an Australian-centric mix ofinternational racing and designdevelopments, and a relevant andcomprehensive coverage of thedomestic sailing world - with aspecial focus on the developmentand growth of young people insailing.

Popular Ad Sizes & ShapesArt Director Notes: Australian Boating uses theoriginal “American Quarto” format. The so-called ‘Trimmed Page’ Size is 275 mm highx 205 mm wide. The ‘type area’ on a full page is 248mm x 175 mm. We use 15 mm side margins, with 13mm margin on the top of the page, and 14 mm on thebottom. Where ‘super-size’ or bleed-off ads are beingdesigned, we strongly recommend designers stillleave a 2-3mm margin inside the trimmed page area, and we STILL recommend 1-2 mm ‘bleeds’ off the 3edges (top, side, bottom) of the ‘trimmed’ page.

We still use the industry standard 300 dpi screenruling.

In other words, think of producing a high resolution adfor a conventional, printed magazine - the rules don’tchange ‘coz we’re offine in the PDF format.

However, all sorts of creative options are nowavailable to agencies, although we caution the use ofSWF software as it still doesn’t work with Appleproducts, which many readers now use.

However, if you have any concerns or issues, don’thesitate to call Peter at ABM on (07) 5502 8233
