WHY REROOF?

There are a number of functional and aesthetic benefits that apply when choosing to reroof a home.

• In many cases, the cost of repairing, fixing, or re-colouring an existing roof can be just as much – if not more – than the cost of undertaking a full reroof.

• In addition to giving your home a new modern finish, a full reroof ensures that current or potential problems with your existing roof will be removed.

• All Bristile Reroofing roofs come with a comprehensive 10 Year Installation warranty, meaning the roof installation and all accessories we install are warrantied for a 10 year period.

• Before work starts, Bristile Reroofing offers a full inspection and obligation free quoting service to make sure that all existing and potential roof issues are identified.

• The roof is one of the most visible features of a home and nothing renews and enhances it like a full reroof.

• Whether you are installing a full reroof or replacing part of your existing roof, Bristile Reroofing can offer a solution that offers style, quality workmanship and peace of mind that comes from working with an industry leader. Thanks to our extensive distributor network, we can effectively source any colour or style of tile to match an existing roof.

• Every roof installed by our experienced team is inspected by the critical eye of our Reroofing Manager and Contracting Supervisors to ensure that every roof installed meets Bristile’s exacting standards.

• When you work with Bristile Reroofing you can be confident in knowing you’re working with one of Australia’s largest manufacturers and installers of concrete and terracotta roof tiles.

THE BENEFITS OF VENTILATION

• Expels hot air from your roof space in summer.

• Exhausts damp air in winter.

• Reduces air conditioning load.

• Helps reduce energy costs.

INSULATION, SARKINGAND VENTILATION

Insulation:

Insulation can be installed in the ceiling cavity to act as a temperature barrier. Without insulation, even the best designed and constructed home will allow heat to pass through external surfaces.

As much as 42% of a home’s heat can transfer through the ceiling alone. Insulation helps keep a more consistent temperature in your home and effectively limits the range of temperature fluctuations, reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling.

Ventilation:

To complete a well designed, sustainable roofing system, Bristile Reroofing also recommends the use of roof ventilators in conjunction with vented gables and soffits.

By moving air in and out of the roof cavity, roof ventilators help to minimise temperature build up. A wind powered ventilation system uses the exhaust forces created by the turning turbine rather than relying on electricity.

The combination of insulation, sarking and ventilation keeps your home cooler in summer, warmer in winter, and more energy efficient all year round, resulting in greater cost savings on energy and lower carbon emissions.

ROOFING ESSENTIALS

Page 5: AUSTRALIA’S PREMIER REROOFING SPECIALIST BROUGHT TO … · THE FACTS. REMOVE OLD ROOF The existing roof timbers are inspected to ensure the battens are sound and battens replaced

A guide to reroofing your home | Bristile Reroofing 5

Sarking:

When building your roof, Bristile Reroofing recommends the use of roof sarking, a strong bonded membrane with several layers which is laid under tiles. Sarking is designed to reflect as much as 95% of heat away from your home and acts as a secondary barrier to any water run off.

In addition, sarking prevents dust and moisture build up in the ceiling cavity. Keep in mind, roof sarking can only be fitted during roof installation or reroofing, so these are the only opportunities to have your roof sarked.

THE BENEFITS OF SARKING

• Reflects up to 95% of radiant heat entering your roof space, contributing a reflective R-Value which improves the overall thermal insulation value of the roof structure.

• Reduces air leakage from inside the roof structure, allowing insulation to work more effectively which ultimately improves the energy efficiency of your home.

• Protects your home from wind driven rain and dust ingress, creating a secondary protective skin in the event of storm damage.

• Provides compliance to BAL bush fire ember attack requirements in accordance AS3959 by providing a secondary form of ember protection for the roof space.

REROOFING? SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT1. Get good advice and

don’t rush your decision There’s nothing like getting hands–on when choosing product, and talking face–to–face with the experts. With a number of Design Centres across Australia, we’re ready to help, with product displays, colour advice, design ideas as well as insider tips and tricks.

2. Understand that there is a difference between concrete and terracotta roof tiles Each has their advantages. Terracotta, for example, is one of the only roofing materials where the colour does not fade over time. You would be mad to take off terracotta tiles and replace them with a less premium product for example.

3. Consider the whole roof space Used together, sarking, insulation and ventilation can significantly reduce the amount of energy required to heat and cool your home. This saves you money on energy bills and ensures comfortable living conditions all year round.

4. The look Think about maintaining the architectural look of the area you live in and the era of your house. In the older suburbs and regions of Australia, terracotta was used and is still the best way to ensure your roof looks fantastic for years to come.

5. Colour choice Choose the colour of your new roof based on the complementary colours of the rest of it’s exterior.

6. The design rule Designers have used a scale known as “60, 30, 10” for years. It’s simply a definition for the proportions of a design space.

The largest proportion of your design space has the largest impact and is given the proportion of 60%. For the façade of your home this is the exterior walls.

The next proportion of the design space is given the proportion of 30%. Although not as large as the 60%, it still has a large impact on the overall look of the design. For the façade of your home this is the roof tiles.

The final 10% of the design space is the least dominant area of the space, however no less important. In fact this selection can make or break the design of your home. For the façade of your home this is the gutter, fascia, windows and doors.

10STEPS TO REROOFINGReroofing can take 2 to 4 days to complete, depending on the size of the roof. There are 10 steps to the reroofing process.

INSTALL SAFETY RAIL

REROOF OR RE-SPRAY? THE FACTS.

REMOVE OLD ROOF

The existing roof timbers are inspected to ensure the battens are sound and battens replaced if necessary.

Many people don’t realise that in some cases the cost of repainting or fixing an existing roof can be comparable to having the whole house re roofed.

The advantage of reroofing, other than the replacement of the existing roof with

Safety is a priority. Before commencing any work, guard rail is installed and a ladder is raised and fitted to the roof. The tilers can now access the roof.

brand new product, is that reroofing ensures that all potential issues with existing products and installation problems are overcome because we fix the new roof to the standards set out in our comprehensive installation warranty and Australian Standard AS2050.

In fact, if you choose to reroof with new

Bristile concrete roof tiles we even offer a 50 year product warranty for added peace of mind.

Note – Terracotta roof tiles retain their colour for life* of the product and therefore do not require respraying or painting. In the long term, respraying a terracotta roof can actually make your roof look worse.

The sarking is carefully unrolled across the roof, starting at the bottom of the rafter.

All hip and ridge lines are covered with ridge fittings.

Pointing is a flexible material that covers the mortar and comes in a colour that matches the roof tile. It acts as a mechanical fastener, keeping the ridge in place. It is also used to finish the tiles at the gable or edge of the roof.

Guard rail is removed and the site cleaned up with all roof rubbish and debris placed in bins or designated rubbish areas.

At the conclusion of your reroofing, Bristile Reroofing offers you your warranties as part of your hand over pack for added peace of mind.

New battens are nailed to the rafters with a high pressure nail gun.

The new roof tiles are lifted up to the roof using an elevator belt.

Tiles are laid sequentially up the roof from the gutter line. Fixing clips, or nails, are used to secure the roof tiles to the roof.

THE BENEFITS OF ROOF TILES

AffordabilityRoof tiles are one of the most affordable roofing products on the Australian market.

Ideal for Coastal AreasRoof tiles are ideal for use in coastal areas as they are impervious to rust and corrosion. Unlike metal roofs, roof tiles don’t require a higher graded material for coastal homes.

StrengthRoof tiles must comply with strict standards in strength. Testing shows that terracotta roof tiles are actually stronger than concrete roof tiles.

Low Embodied EnergyTesting shows that roof tiles have a lower embodied energy compared to metal roofing.

Reduced Cooling RequirementsTesting of similarly coloured roof tiles and metal roofing shows roof tiles have a lower cooling requirement.

Fire ResistanceRoof tiles are ideal for bushfire prone areas as they are non combustible.

Research conducted by universities and independent institutions, confirms that a terracotta or concrete tiled roof offers many benefits. Extensive testing and investigations have been conducted and the results show that roof tiles offer:

CHECKING YOUR ROOFBristile Reroofing always recommends that you use a qualified roofing specialist to check your roof. To experience the difference you can expect from Bristile Reroofing, please call us on 1300 274 784 or email [email protected]

Colour and Profile RangeRoof tiles are available in more colour and profile combinations than any other commonly used roofing product in Australia.

Solar ReflectanceTesting shows roof tiles reflect more heat away from the home than the metal roofing product tested.

Water Capture/Run OffWater run off from tiled roofs is as safe to use as that from any other roofing material.

LongevityWhen it comes to longevity, terracotta roof tiles outperform the leading alternative. Terracotta roof tiles are supplied with our famous ‘‘Colour For Life’’ warranty.

This is impressive when you consider that metal roofs are sold with a warranty for up to 36 years, and Bristile concrete roof tiles are offered with a 50 Year Product Warranty.

Sound InsulationRoof tiles can reduce noise by 30 decibels which is more than twice the noise reduction achieved by the metal roofing product tested.

Check for any cracked tiles, displacement of tiles or build-up of debris. For metal roofs, we check for metal corrosion (rust), holes, and tearing.

Check old cement mortar bedding. Check screw fixings that may be worn or corroded.

Check flashings, gutters and downpipes.

Check whether or not sarking or anticon is installed.

Check for sufficient ventilation to remove hot or damp air.

Check the need to re-insulate the ceiling.

Assess the need to replace individual tiles, re-spray or re-roof and sark.
