As iconic as the Opera House in its time (1874), 1 Martin Place is a beautifully colonnaded Victorian palazzo that houses Sydney’s General Post Office. Beyond the stamps and envelopes, it’s been gutted, stabbed with office towers and transformed into the Westin Sydney hotel, swanky shops, restaurants and bars, including Crystal Bar and Senate Bar

Inspired by Italian Renaissance palaces, architect James Barnet caused a minor fracas by basing the faces carved on the sandstone facade on local identities. Under a staircase in the basement there is a small historical display and a pipe housing the dribbling remnants of the Tank Stream.

The Tank Stream is a fresh water course which empties into Sydney Cove in New South Wales. Today it is little more than a storm water drain, but originally it was the fresh water supply for the fledgling colony of New South Wales in the late 18th century

Studded with imposing edifices, long, lean Martin Place was closed to traffic in 1971 but has only ever been partially successful as a pedestrian mall.

Once the corporate crowds go home, the ramps, stairs and fountains are converged upon by skateboarders and film crews.

Built in 1916, the 12-storey Commonwealth Bank building was Australia’s first steel-framed ‘skyscraper’. Its interiors are largely intact and clock-watching tellers still muse over the inscription on the wall: ‘The Noiseless Foot Of Time Steals Swiftly By’.

Another branch has taken over the old State Savings Bank building: it’s a beau example of interwar beaux-arts architecture, featuring green-marble Doric columns and an enclosed brass-and-marble teller area. Abutting Martin Place on George Street, the former Commercial Banking Corporation of Sydney is now a Virgin Megastore – an impressive marbled edifice worth a detour if you’re passing by.

The Sydney Tower, the city's tallest structure, is one of Sydney's most prominent landmarks. The 309 meter high tower was built in 1981 as a communications tower and tourist facility. Each year, more than a million visitors enjoy the spectacular views over Sydney.

There are three main sections of the tower open to public access. One is the observation deck at 250 metres above ground level with a fully-enclosed viewing platform featuring 360 degree views of the city and surrounds.

The Sydney Tower Skywalk platform at 268 metres above ground level has an open-air viewing platform only accessible as part of planned and booked tours.

There are also revolving restaurants, one à la carte and one buffet. The buffet restaurant was recently (2006) renovated. It seats 220 people, and serves 185,000 customers annually, of which 50,000 are international visitors, mostly from Asia

The tower has a maximum capacity of 960 people. Travel from the ground to the tower is via three high speed double-deck elevators that reach the observation deck in approximately 40 seconds if on maximum speed, this depends on wind conditions at the time.
