OTHER GOVS STORYLINES■ CAN CARGER, WHITE RESUME ROLLJunior middle blocker LOGAN CARGER and red-shirt junior CHRISTINA WHITE both closed 2016 with impressive November performances. Carg-er racked up 73 of her 130 kills and 18 of her 31 blocks during the season’s final six matches. White also stepped up her game with 48 of her 219 kills and 40 of her 224 digs during the same stretch, which included three matches against teams that finished ahead of the Govs in the standings.

■ GERIG LOOKS FOR 500Sophomore libero GINNY GERIG was oh-so-close to becoming the 14th Govs player to record 500 digs in a season, but finished 2016 with 498 digs. She returns with that year of experience looking to join that rarefied group of Govs defen-sive players.

■ SLAY SLIPS TOWARD 1000Senior middle blocker ASHLEY SLAY needs a 186-kill campaign to reach the 1,000-kill plateau during her career. Currently, her 814 kills ranks 19th all-time at Austin Peay as she seeks to be-come just the 14th member of the Govs 1,000 kill club.

■ SLAY ALSO HAS BLOCKS IN MINDWith 109 blocks as a junior, Slay moved to No. 10 on Austin Peay’s career blocks list. It was only the ninth 100-block season in program history. Slay’s 245 career stops sit just 104 blocks shy of breaking the program’s record set by Kim Smith (348 blocks, 1996-99).

■ STUCKER LOOKS TO MOVE AHEADJunior setter KRISTEN STUCKER will look to build on her 1,338-assist campaign that cat-apulted her into Austin Peay’s Top 10 in career assists. The Johnston, Iowa product enters 2016 with 1,915 career assists. Just duplicating last season’s effort would make her the fifth Govs setter to record 3,000 career assists.

■ MOTT NEARS 400TH WINGovernors head coach TAYLOR MOTT enters the new season needing just 18 victories to reach the 400-career win plateau. She has 78 wins in five previous seasons at Austin Peay after accu-mulating 304 wins in 13 seasons at Division II Flagler.

■ STUCKER, SLAY PRESEASON PICKSSetter KRISTEN STUCKER and middle block-er ASHLEY SLAY were both named to the Ohio Valley Conference’s 14-woman preseason team. Stucker, the reigning OVC Setter of the Year, and Slay were both First-Team All-OVC picks in 2016.

■ GOVS GET 2ND PLACE NODAfter finishing tied for third in the 2016 Ohio Val-ley Conference race, Austin Peay was selected second in the league’s preseason poll of coach-es and sports information directors. It is the Govs best preseason placing since 2011.

■ GOVS EARN AVCA TEAM HONORFor the fifth consecutive academic year the Gov-ernors volleyball program earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award. Austin Peay was one of only 145 Division I teams to earn the honor, which recognizes team that posted a 3.30 cumulative grade-point aver-age during the previous academic year.

■ NCAA RECOGNIZES GOVSFor the third consecutive academic year, and fourth all-time, the NCAA honored the Austin Peay volleyball program with a Public Recog-nition Award. The recognition is presented to NCAA teams that rank among the Top 10 percent of their sport in the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate.

■ NEW FACES ON THE BENCHHead coach TAYLOR MOTT will have a pair of new faces joining her on the bench this season. Mor-ris Cephas joined the Governors as an assistant coach in May after four seasons as head coach at Division II King University. Also joining the staff is graduate assistant Charles Wellmann, a 2017 graduate of King University, who played on the Tornadoes men’s squad.

■ NEW FACES ON THE ROSTERMott also will have five new faces on the roster for the 2017 season with four freshmen and a trans-fer joining during the offseason. Freshmen NINA KORFHAGE and BROOKE MOORE both join from prep power Assumption High School in Louisville, Kentucky. CHLOE STITT joins the team after play-ing for Delta High School in Summitville, Indiana while CAROLINE WAITE is an in-state product from Knoxville’s Hardin Valley Academy. In addi-tion, HALEY TURNER joins the team after playing at Trevecca last season.

■ MAKING A LEAP IN 2016The Govs saw their fortunes skyrocket in 2015 as they finished the year with a 24-11 record. That was a 12½-win improvement over the 10-22 mark the team posted in 2015. It was the fifth best improvement among Division I teams from 2015 to 2016.
