President’s report
I hope that your season has been a successful one, whether it be showing or in the field.
Unfortunately the Trialling season hasn’t been the best, with mixed results, mainly due to
lack of game.
However the Spaniel & Retriever Trials didn’t hold in July as the entries weren’t there.
A great shame as there is an abundance of rabbits at the moment and I was under the
impression that there were a good number of Novice dogs. Hence scheduling two Novice
trials for the July weekend.
I was taken to task a couple of years ago when I suggested that the future of S&R Trials were
floundering and I was told in no uncertain terms that there were plenty of young dogs coming
on.
The entry for our July trial was only 4 dogs, so where are they?
The field & retrieving sub-committee will discuss this at some length during the next meeting
as to how we can encourage more people into the sport.
This just doesn’t apply to S&R trials but it goes across all disciplines.
If you have any ideas then please come forward with them -- your input is needed.
There is a scheduled release of Calisivirus version 2 in December this year.
If version 2 is anything like the first attempt then we shall be devoid of rabbits for the next 5-
7 years. If the prediction of a 98% kill rate is correct then it will do nothing to help the cause.
The only field discipline that goes from strength to strength is the Retrieving Trials. Their
numbers could be boosted further if the rabbits disappear.
Our club show was a great success and all is looking good for a Championship Show on
Melbourne Cup weekend. Our show secretary is quite impressed with the numbers entered
so even if you aren’t a “showy” do come along and lend your support to the club.
As always we seek your support and input into club activities and our magazine. If you have
any interesting articles or happenings that you would like to share with your fellow club
members then please submit them to our Newsletter Editor who is always grateful for new
material.
Club Memberships are now up for renewal so please make the most of the various forms of
paying options.
For those of you travelling overseas I wish you a safe journey and a happy holiday.

OPEN SHOW – 21 June 2014
Report by Lee Petering
Dr Linda Beer judged our Open Show this year, with Matthew Norton stewarding and keeping
all in check! Linda and Matt are well known to our show folk as they breed and show Gordon
Setters – Deveron Kennels.
Dogs Victoria have set a new rule for Open Shows running in conjunction with Championship Shows at KCC Park which saw us using an outdoor ring. This had us all worried as the forecast was for rain. Thankfully Melbourne answered our prayers – the rain stayed away, and although it was cold it was a wonderful day for our Gundogs in the ring.
Linda had a great entry of 67 dogs, and selected some lovely winners.
Jan Farrelly with Labrador Retriever Kirkdell Frankie winning Best Exhibit In Show and Open In Show.

Taumac Kennel’s Golden Retriever Vospiel Golden Tillie –

TRIAL REPORT
Victorian Gundog Club July Retrieving Trials Sally Haynes
The Victorian Gundog Club held Retrieving Trials over the weekend of the 12th and 13th of
July. The weather was cold and drizzly on Saturday but the sun did make an appearance on
Sunday after an overnight minimum of -2C! The conditions were quite muddy and only the
very brave (yours truly amongst them!) camped on site. A number of competitors also
gathered for dinner at the local pub on Saturday night.
Retrieving Trials are usually held on private land, to give our judges the ability to select
unique land and water runs at all levels of competition. The club would like to thank Karren
and Andrew Williamson for allowing us to utilise their beautiful farming property in
Molesworth. Not only did they make us feel very welcome, but also showed a great interest
in the trialling itself, taking some fabulous still shots and video footage of the dogs in action.
Landholders Karren and Andrew Williamson
Thank you to our judges for the weekend, Mr Ron Cooper (QLD), Ms Dianne McCann (VIC)
and Mr Mark Sargeson (NSW) – with special thanks to Mark for filling in at very short
notice. Mr Richard Carr was Trial Manager for both days and did a terrific job coordinating,
delegating and ensuring everyone was happy. Thanks Richard – you did so well I’d like to
nominate you to do it again next year!
It was also a busy weekend for judges in training, with trainees selecting runs and testing
dogs under the watchful eye of their mentors and examiners. Congratulations to our newest
Novice Retrieving judges, Karl Britton and Leanne O'Sullivan!
Of course, trials don’t happen without the help of club members and competitors, so thank
you to everyone who pitched in – whether you took all the entries/enquiries, did the
catalogue, organised the property, game, ribbons and prizes, looked after the judges, assisted
at vetting, helped out as a gun or game steward during the trial or volunteered your dogs for
the judge’s exams at the end of a long day. It truly is a team effort and a wonderful
community.

RESULTS:
It was fantastic to see such a variety of breeds in the placings over the weekend – we had
Labs, Goldens and GSPs, of course, but also an English Springer Spaniel, German
Wirehaired Pointer and Wirehaired Vizsla taking out 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Novice (and my own
ESS finishing All Age on Sunday (whoo hoo!)). Congratulations to VGC members who did
well over the weekend, in particular Jim Hargreaves and his lovely Golden, “Maverick” or
“Mav” to his friends (RT CH Winterset Moon River), who worked so beautifully all weekend
for a 2nd place in All Age on Saturday and 1st place on Sunday. Members who attended the
VGC training days would remember Jim and his valuable advice for aspiring competitors!

TRIAL REPORT
2014 DOGS VICTORIA POINTER AND SETTER CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD TRIAL.
Gordon Strachan, Trial Manager
Dogs Victoria Inc ran the annual Championship Field Trial for Pointers and Setters on
Saturday 14th June 2014. Thirteen dogs were entered: one English Setter from Western
Australia, three Irish Setters, and nine Pointers, two of which came from New South Wales.
The judge for the Trial was David Coleman from New South Wales, who was judging his
first Championship Field Trial. After the draw was held to decide who would run against
each other, the first brace of the draw was an Irish Setter and a Pointer.
The Irish Setter made a statement on what the standard should be by having two stylish finds,
positive flushing of the birds on command and stylish retrieves of the downed bird. He
finished off his run with a very stylish back of his competitor when it had a find. All braces
were run, and most dogs had finds, retrieves and backs. The other dog that impressed from
the first round was a Pointer bitch, who also had good finds and a back.
After the first round was completed, the judge decided that twelve dogs should go into the
second round. He wanted to see if the standard set by the Irish Setter could be maintained,
also if the rest of the field could achieve this standard. The Irish Setter continued to impress
with further positive finds finishing off with good retrieves and strong backing of the other
dog it was competing against.
After the second round the Judge selected four dogs, from which he hoped he would select
his winner and runner up – three Pointers and the Irish Setter. One of the Pointers was finding
game, but was eliminated for having a hard mouth when it retrieved the downed bird.
Another Pointer was eliminated for not being able to produce the bird from its find.
This left the Irish Setter and the Pointer bitch who had continued to impress with solid finds
and retrieves to decide first place and runner up.
The dogs were run on, with the Irish Setter making another positive find and retrieve. The
Pointer bitch had a find, but failed to produce from it.
With the Irish Setter standing out from the rest of the field he was awarded first place
and the Pointer bitch awarded runner up for 2014.
The winning dog was Ft Ch Russetray Royal Flush, owned and handled by Taner
Ozsehitoglu, and the runner up Ft Ch Diana of Dawndale, owned and handled by Fernando
Sorgiovanni.

TRIAL REPORT
2014 NATIONAL FIELD TRIAL FOR POINTERS AND SETTERS.
Gordon Strachan
A National Pointer and Setter Field Trial is run to find the best Pointer or Setter in Australia.
The last National Trial was run in 1994 (twenty years ago), which was won by an Irish Setter.
The Victorian Pointer and Setter discipline decided it was time to run a second National Field
Trial. Twelve dogs were entered: three Irish Setters, one English Setter from Western
Australia, and eight Pointers, with one from New South Wales.
The judge for the trial was Mr Geoff Maudlen from South Australia, who was assisted by Mr
David Coleman from New South Wales. After the preliminaries were carried out including
the draw to decide which dogs would run against each other, the first pair got under way, but
the birds appeared to have moved on.
Was this to be the trend for the day? The judge moved to new ground in another paddock
where some birds were found, and one of the dogs had a find, the other had a back. It
appeared that it was going to be a hard, long day. The next brace ran consisting of the English
Setter bitch and a Pointer bitch: both dogs had a find, retrieve, and back.
The trial moved to new ground that had not been used during the trial season. Were there
birds here? The winner and runner up from the previous day ran, with the Pointer clearly out-
finding the Irish Setter, but the Irish Setter put in some very stylish backs.
The fifth round consisted of two dogs that had competed against each other for a number of
years: an Irish Setter and a Pointer bitch. Both dogs had finds and a retrieve and a back.
The next brace was a Pointer dog and a Pointer bitch. Because of the scarcity of birds, the
dogs were ranging out further and the judge was allowing the dogs work to their maximum
distance from their handlers to enable the dogs to find the birds. The last brace from the first
round were run: a Pointer bitch and an Irish Setter. Both dogs had finds, but birds were not
holding and were getting up some distance from the dogs when they were flushed, making it
difficult for the handler to down the bird and the dog unable to retrieve.
This completed the first round, and as no dogs had been eliminated from the round, a redraw
was conducted and the second commenced with a pair of Pointers – both dogs immediately
produced birds. The second pair to run, an Irish Setter and a Pointer, both started to find birds
and were able to finish off with nice retrieves. The third pair were run on, a Pointer and an
Irish Setter. The Pointer had done some very good work in each of its heats, but had not yet
had a back. It was now the turn of the English Setter who was paired with a Pointer, with the
Pointer doing some classy work, The final two braces were run – both pairs not doing enough
to be considered for the final run-off.
At the end of the second round the judge decided on two dogs to be considered for first place
and runner up – both Pointers who had had numerous finds and had done good work. One of
the dogs had many finds and great retrieves but required a back, the other dog required more
finds. The final heat commenced and almost immediately the Pointer that needed more finds
went into a solid point – it was the ideal chance for the other dog to get its back, but it
ignored the pointing dog who completed his task successfully. They were again cast out, and
the same Pointer that had the last find went on point again, but the other dog failed to honour
13
the point by backing. This occurred several times, leaving the judge to declare a winner but
no runner up. All the dogs had to work hard for their finds, as there were fewer birds. The
winning dog, Ft Ch Rip Rap Marksman, who was bred by Barry and Cathy Oliver, and
owned and handled by Henry Foster, could now add National Field Trial Champion to its
title.

TRIAL REPORT
Bathurst Spaniel Trial – July 2014 John Hodson
The Trial was very good – it was conducted under the WGAA (Working Gundogs Association of Australia) and SSAA (Sporting Shooters Association of Australia). A total of 8 dogs and the Open and Novice trials were held concurrently under the two judges. Rabbits were a bit thin on the ground, but most dogs got a flush and retrieve. It was held in tussock country and blackberry/bramble patches. The day was conducted in the following way:
2 handlers go out approx 50-60 m. apart and carry a gun if they want to. They do not have to shoot but it seems that this is the done thing. There are then also two persons carrying guns and two judges. They all walk in a line and each handler works their dog and together cover ground approx 20-30m. in front in a quartering pattern. When either dog flushes a rabbit, either the handler shoots it or the gun shoots it and the dog has to remain steady to the shot and sit until the judge tells the handler to let their dog retrieve the rabbit. Once retrieved, the rabbit is checked for hard mouth, then the handler puts the dog on the lead and calls the next competitor. Once all competitors have had a turn, those left in the competition are called back in under the other judge and do the same as above. The dog is marked on quartering, steadiness to flush and shot, retrieving, style, passion and other merits. When the comp is finished, both judges discuss notes and scores and placings are then made.
I am pleased to say that Milly did well at the weekend. She came first in her first novice Spaniel Field Trial so is now an Open Field Trial Dog. Milly is looking a bit sorry for herself having spent most of the weekend crashing through brambles and blackberry bushes and getting a bit torn up. I think my wife Sirikul is more concerned than Milly and is giving her cuddles and massages – but Milly still wants to go out and have another go .

TRIAL REPORT Labrador Retriever Club – June Trial
Prue Winkfield
This Trial was held at Melton Park near Traralgon in what has turned out to be about the last lovely weekend so far this winter. Some hardy people even stripped down to tee shirts on Sunday. With lunch being brought around to the runs by Anna and Sheree it was quite a picnic atmosphere! It was good to Steve and Margaret Hall in attendance, with Steve running his dog in All Age after what I believe is quite a long absence from the trials. This was my first Trial since last September, and I can’t say how helpful all the AA handlers and judges were in making sure I could get to and from the runs with my stick – getting old is not for the faint hearted! As usual our members fared well in the results as follows: Trevor Stevens came 2nd in Novice with his Golden retriever Missy; Peter Attard’s GSP Milly had an amazing weekend winning both Restricted Stakes; Russell Whitechurch with his young Labradors got two 3rd places with Arrow in restricted and won both All Age Stakes – one with Billie and one with Chief; Kevin Andrews came 3rd in Sunday’s All Age with Lucy; and my Tornado 2nd on the Saturday. A most enjoyable Trial.
