AUGUST
&
SEPTEMBER
Riverview Families,
Summer is a busy time for many and certainly was true at Riverview these past several months. I’m excit-
ed to inform you that Riverview was able to obtain a State Grant last school year that allowed us to acquire fiber
optics cabling for our school. The fiber connection will allow our students and staff great access to technology
without the frustration of being kicked off the internet or continuous hour glass, waiting to retrieve information.
Along with the fiber, a new elementary computer lab was installed next to our latchkey room and wireless con-
nections throughout the school. The new lab will have enough computers for all students to have access without
having to share or take turns. Through increased use with technology, we hope to better prepare our students with
increased skills and knowledge in all areas.
I’d also like to share with you a couple new staff members who will be joining us this year. Mr. Tony
Riddle will be teaching physical education classes, Mrs. Mindy Webster is our new secretary, Mrs. Becky Davis
will be providing delicious, yet nutritious food for our students, Mrs. Lisa Crow will be assisting in the kitchen
and running the Latchkey program and Miss Cynthia Caccia will help in Latchkey. I am excited for all of these
individuals to join the staff at Riverview and believe you and your children will have positive experiences with all
of them as well.
After each school year draws to a close, the staff at Riverview reflect on the year to determine our
strengths and weaknesses. One of the weaknesses we identified was that many of our students were struggling
with their reading comprehension and fluency skills. Since this area was targeted as a needed improvement, four
of our staff members attended a four day training that covered instruction on reading, writing and phonics. This
training provided additional support and tools for our teachers to use in the classroom this year. Through this
training and grant money we were also able to purchase new curriculum for reading, writing and phonics that we
believe will positively impact our students.
One of the other areas we wanted to improve was in the area of self-awareness which includes listening
skills, respect, empathy, compassion, emotions, communication skills, and peaceful conflict resolution. For this
school year, we have partnered with the Center of Prevention of Abuse, who will be on site weekly to provide our
students with lessons to help guide our students through many of the social challenges they face today.
Riverview, along with our Parent Club, have planned many opportunities for families to become involved
at school and hope you will continue to support our students through your participation. Working together, our
students will succeed!
