Air India launches Swachh Bharat campaign

Responding to the call for a Swachh Bharat given by the Prime Minister, officials and

staff of Air India, true to their wont, stepped out on a cleaning campaign. All the senior officials of Air India also joined in the Swachh Bharat campaign.

Earlier, CMD Rohit Nandan in a message to employees of Air India said, “the Prime Minister has de-sired that a nationwide campaign be organised with the participation

of all sections of society to bring about mass awareness and a last-ing behavioural change to achieve this goal. I therefore, urge you to participate wholeheartedly in this campaign – by word of mouth and action – to spread the message for a Swachh Bharat to all.”

Even as the campaign for a Swachh Bharat began in earnest from September 25 onwards, a “Swachhta Shapath” (Pledge) was administered on October 2, 2014,

to all employees of Air India across the country.

In her message, Executive Direc-tor (Northern Region), Meenakshi Dua called upon all the employees of the region to undertake active participation by removing all the unused material and quick dis-posal of scrap from their sections. “Cleanliness comes from the heart. It is a continuous process which should keep on moving. Purity of thoughts and genuineness of action

Air India observed August 27, 2014, as Air India Day, the day the erstwhile

Indian Airlines and Air India were amalgamated into a one, strong national airlineThis was the first time Air India Day was celebrated since the foundation of a new resugent Air India. A function presented by employees from all across the network was held to celebrate the day and award the meritorious employees of Air India.

Minister for Civil Aviation Ashok Gajapathi Raju was the Chief Guest at the aesthetically showcased cultural kaleidoscope held at the Air Force Auditorium in New Delhi, to celebrate the spirit of unity of Air India, by talented members of the Air India family. Air India also honoured its meritorious employees, during the occasion, acknowledging the excellence achieved by them in

their respective areas of service, thereby bringing pride and glory to the Air India family with their contribution. The then Secretary, Civil Aviation Ashok Lavasa and our CMD Rohit Nandan also spoke on the occasion.

It is to uphold the traditional ethos of Air India, to rise to the occasion whenever the nation demands, even at the risk of the lives of our brave colleagues, including pilots, cabin crew, engineers and ground staff that Air India decided to organise Air India Day. The function was intended to felicitate those who have shown exemplary courage and devotion to duty while going on rescue operations to bring back hundreds of our countrymen from conflict zones in Iraq and Libya; to honour our courageous pilots who efficiently negotiated an emergency situation in the US; it was to doff

our hats to colleagues who achieved excellence and brought glory to Air India. All this was intended to instill a sense of pride and confidence in our workforce. It was perfectly timed to celebrate our entry into Star Alliance, ushering an era of improved product offering by Air India on a global platform. We also felicitated our business partners for their continued support in our difficult period.

A vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie prevailed during the event, resulting in positive vibes, as employees representing different regions came together to celebrate the resurgence of Air India.

All participants in the cultural function were talented stars of the company itself. The event lifted the morale of employees and motivated them to work harder for a turnaround.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going! And our Engineering colleagues in Kolkata did

precisely that. An Airbus 319 aircraft VT-SCB suffered an engine failure due to a complicated bearing fault at Aizawl, after the flight landed there.

A serviceable engine was transported to Aizawl from Delhi, by a specially designed truck, over 18 days. Sairang Bridge near Aizawl Airport was very critical to cross, for the truck carrying the heavy load of the engine, but the tricky stretch was somehow negotiated, thanks to the expertise and courage of a local driver.

The humongous task of removal of the damaged engine and installation of the new engine, was successfully completed at the very first attempt, in the shortest possible time, by the team from CCU Engineering, who worked tirelessly, braving inclement weather and the

AI spreads wings to evacuate the stranded; rushes relief to Srinagar and Leh

news & events

Living up to its reputation of responding to the call of the nation in times of need, every

time, Air India once again stepped forward to evacuate stranded people from the flood-affected Jammu and Kashmir and also send relief sup-plies. During the period September 10-17, Air India operated 49 extra legs of flights besides its scheduled flights and transported nearly 7,900 passengers from Srinagar / Jammu and Leh. On the request of the Gov-ernment of India, Air India trans-ported 2,705 passengers absolutely free of cost from Srinagar and Leh to Delhi.

On September 10, 2014, the air-lines operated a relief flight with an Airbus 330 aircraft and evacuated 258 people, apart from carrying 135 passengers free-of-charge, on its scheduled flight. On September 11, Air India operated an early relief flight to Leh, to bring back 122 pas-sengers who managed to reach the higher station, as all roads from Sri-nagar were closed, but the Leh high-way was still open. Later during the day, it operated another relief flight to Srinagar and returned to Delhi

with 265 passengers, free-of-charge. This was in addition to the 230 pas-sengers carried free, on board its scheduled flight from Srinagar.

On September 12, Air India operated three flights carrying 336 passengers free-of-charge, taking the total number of evacuees to 1,346. This was in addition to 21 sorties operated in the J&K region, transporting military personnel free-of-charge to Srinagar and Leh. In addition to evacuation of people, Air India also transported a total of 65 tonnes of relief material, comprising mostly medicines, drinking water, blankets, cooked food and chlorine tablets to Srinagar.

To facilitate registered NGOs to send relief material to the state, Air India had set up dedicated helplines at IGI Airport, New Delhi. Registered NGOs wanting to send mineral water and cooked items, as relief material to the state, free of cost, could contact the helpline numbers for details. The relief material is still being carried on its schedule flights.

Tamil Nadu is thousands of kilometres away from the affected

area. But the residents of the state pitched in to help the needy public. Besides contributing lakhs of rupees to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, the NGOs and others (Lions Club, Round Table and Sastra University) brought 625 cartons weighing 8,435 kilos of relief material to our Domestic Cargo Section during September 17-19. The same was airlifted and sent to Kashmir to aid the flood victims.

Air India again rose to the occasion making immediate arrangements to transport 21 inflatable boats from New York to Srinagar free of cost, by the first available service. Re-sponding promptly to a request from a good samaritan, we confirmed space on our flights to transport the consignment of 21 inflatable boats, weighing approximately 100 kg, in 21 boxes, from New York to Srinagar via Delhi. The consignment landed at Delhi by flight AI 102 on Septem-ber 14 in the evening and was fur-ther carried to Srinagar by AI 866 on the morning of September 15. On its arrival at Srinagar, the boats were immediately put into operation. It was a big challenge for Air India to transport the consignment urgently and with utmost care. Earlier, Air India had also carried 15 boats for the Indian armed forces for evacu-ation purposes. The boats were car-ried from Mumbai and Bangalore

Air India has always been fulfill-ing its social responsibility, more so, during calamities and natural dis-asters. The role played by Air India during the Gulf evacuation, Bhuj earthquake, Tsunami in Southern States and Andaman & Nicobar Is-lands and snowfall in Leh in August 2010, etc., are etched in the history of India. Air India’s Gulf evacuation operations also earned it a name in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Journey of a heart

September 3, 2014. It was a quiet afternoon at Chennai Airport, when an ambulance from the

Fortis Malar Hospital rushed in and parked, raising curiosity among the people present. The electronic media reporters present there were all agog as they came to know what exactly was going to travel in that ambulance.Yes, Air India flight AI 264 from Bengaluru to Chennai on that day had an important organ on board: A heart in a blue insulated box.

A recent Kannada film features the hero transporting a heart from Mysore to Bengaluru in a short period. The mission of the police and the doctors to take the heart to the destination keeps the audience on edge. But in a real life happening on September 3, Air India played the hero and airlifted a heart from Bengaluru to Chennai.

A patient at a Chennai hospital needed a heart for survival and a brain dead patient at Bengaluru did not have any matching per-son in the city to donate it to. The heart transplantation has to be done within six hours after its harvesting from the body. Air India along with other agencies played a critical role in bridging this gap and enabled the heart to beat in another body.

The Bengaluru city traffic police played a crucial role in ensuring that the harvested heart reached Kempegowda International Air-port, from BGS Global Hospital at Kengeri, in the minimum possible time. The shortest possible route for the ambulance’s movement was identified. All the 22 signals along the route were turned green for the ambulance. The blue box reached the airport from Kengeri, a distance of 47.8 km in 47 minutes. In normal traffic, an ambulance would have taken twice this time. The waiting Air India flight, with its door open, picked up the blue box and Capt.

Prem Shankar took off for Chennai. In Chennai, as soon as the Co-

ordination Cell confirmed that one heart was being brought on board our flight, Airport Manager (in-charge) KD Sivanath was informed, setting in motion a series of activities, like deputing the Duty Manager to personally handle the situation and save time.

Capt. Shankar had landed early at Bangalore Airport and monitored the loading operation. The aircraft which took off eight minutes early from Bangalore at 3.22 p.m., landed at Chennai Airport at 4.11 p.m. and docked at 4.16 p.m. As soon as the

door was opened, crew members carrying the harvested heart emerged from the aircraft, the Duty Manager guided them and brought them out of the airport to the waiting ambulance. Time was ticking.

The police in Chennai had made arrangements similar to their Bengaluru counterparts. Traffic was stopped in Chennai to enable the ambulance to carry the heart to Fortis Malar Hospital in the minimum possible time. Within seven minutes, the ambulance covered a distance of 14 km. The smooth transfer earned the airline accolades from the media and the general public. The heart transplant process started immediately and by 8.30 pm it was completed. Well done! Keep it up!

In its latest initiative to expand air connectivity to

smaller cities and towns, Air India started a direct flight from the national capital Delhi to Pantnagar in Uttarakhand from October 14, 2014. The four-times-a-week flight operating with an ATR aircraft provides quick and convenient connection to government officials, business travellers, students and tourists, among others.

Pantnagar is well known for the G.B. Pant University of Agri-culture and Technology. It is also close to the integrated industrial town, Rudrapur, which has large industrial houses based there and to the High Court of Uttarakhand. Pantnagar is a gateway point to the famous Jim Corbett National Park, and tourist destinations like Naini-tial, Ranikhet and Bheemtal.

In the recent past, Air India has launched flights to six re-gional stations viz to Bhuj from Mumbai, to Lilabari, Tezpur, Silchar, Guwahati and Shillong from Kolkata. The airline also operates flights from Port Blair to Car Nicobar under charter agreement with the Andaman Nicobar Island Administration. Air India’s regional fleet of eight ATR and CRJ aircraft covers 28 stations in India.

Meanwhile, Air India now flies from Goa to Moscow via Delhi and back four days a week, even as the Goa-Delhi-Goa service remains a daily operation. The direct flight to Moscow was introduced in July 2014 with a Dreamliner. Air In-dia also introduced a Dreamliner service on the Mumbai-Bangkok-Delhi sector as well as on the Delhi-Bangkok-Delhi sector.

He told the gathering that we realise the value of our independence only when we are deprived of it. He added it was time for all of us to realise the true value of our independence and use it to work for the benefit and progress of our organisation, society and nation.

As far as the employees of the airline are concerned, he said two significant events had happened in the recent past. The first one, being the airline becoming part of Star Alliance, the leading global airline

Dear Sir, To introduce myself, I am a Senior Professor (and Ex-Dean) at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India), Mumbai. I would like to place my appreciations on record for the wonderful and sympathetic cooperation rendered by Air India ground staff in Chennai and Mumbai on a recent sad incidence in my family.

My sister and her husband went on a pilgrimage during the second week of September to Badrinath. Unfortunately, my brother-in-law died there due to heart failure (on September 15) and there was a need to bring the human-remains back to Kanchipuram. It turned out that I was on a brief official visit to Puducherry to attend an international conference before his death. I decided to stay back at Chennai (postponing my return journey to Mumbai) to coordinate the process of bringing the body back from Badrinath (after due formalities), after despatching four of my relatives to Dehradun to help my sister.

The first thing I did was to contact V. Mohanan at the Air India ticket counter at the airport to help us on this matter. He gave very valuable inputs on what one should do and what one should not do to bring the human remains back as well how to manage tickets of my relatives. He agreed to offer his help in whichever way he can in the entire process. We strictly followed these. He also gave his mobile number and I used to call him even at some odd hours at his residence. He patiently responded and gave a lot of guidance. I am very grateful to him for the same. The human-remains at last arrived after three days after my brother-in-law's demise. The staff at the Cargo section also were extremely cooperative and did the needful without any delay.

In the same manner, we managed to contact the staff at the Cargo section as well as ticketing section at Delhi. I must say that, as soon as they heard of this news, the staff made the entire process very smooth for my sister and other relatives who accompanied the human-remains, without being very bureaucratic. Since many staff at different shifts were involved, I am not

mentioning all these names. Can you please pass on my appreciation to them as well as to their authorities in Delhi?

The helpful and cooperative attitudes of Air India staff in Chennai and Delhi greatly relieved the stress which my sister was undergoing at Badrinath. On behalf of our entire family, I would like to place our appreciations on record for the sympathetic help offered to us as well as for the dignity and respect with which the human-remains were treated.

I am sure that Air India has a great future with this kind of dedicated staff and their humane approach. My best wishes to Air India for the same.

Best regards. E V Sampathkumaran Senior Professor TIFR, Mumbai 5

Hi,I am writing to you to share with you the wonderful experience I had onboard the Delhi-LHR flight AI-111 on August 10, 2014. The in-flight crew – Mino Behal; Shivani Chopra and Yash Pal Arora provided unparalleled service and made my flight experience great. I have travelled on other airlines; however, the service that I have received this time on Air India exceeded all of them and my expectations as well.

I hope that Air India continues to drive such service levels in future as well. I feel that these crew members should be part of your role model team to motivate other crew members towards excellence. You have a good week ahead. Thanks.

Rgds,

Shekhar Sharad JadhavGlobalOPEXRolloutDamco InternationalA.P Moller Maersk(The above appreciation was received by DGM IFS, Northern Region.)
