There’s plenty to take in both in and around the city this month, from an excellent exhibition at Lotherton Hall about the lives of the warrior societies of Native Americans to the wonderful new Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield.

The Leeds Roller Dolls are looking for a new home, so if you have a large room that a bunch of girls can skate in, be sure to read and of course, we have our regular music listings and film reviews to help you make the most of our fair city in August.

OTLEY CARNIVAL – A BRILLIANT DAY!Otley Carnival was nice and sunny, tempting thousands of people out to watch the parade and converge on the showground afterwards.

Michele Smallshaw, Chair of the Carnival Committee, was delighted at the tremendous public support and thanked everyone who worked so hard to make the day such a success.

The street collection raised £1,513.28, which will be added to other income from the carnival and split between this year’s beneficiaries Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Otley Science Festival.

The highlight of the afternoon was the arrival of one of Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s helicopters. For two hours the pilot, paramedics and support team met with endless groups of children and parents.

All the parade entries were judged before setting off from Leeds Road Auction Ground. Otley All Saints Primary School was best overall entry with their Noah’s Ark. They also received the public’s ‘Favourite Float or Walking Group’ vote.

CARERS LEEDS - OFFERING SUPPORT TO LOCAL CARERS

Carers Leeds is a charity providing support to unpaid carers over the age of 18 across Leeds. It has been running for over 15 years and is part of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers and the Carers’ Centre Network.

WHO IS A CARER? A carer is someone who, without payment, looks after another person who couldn’t manage without their help. This could be as a result of sickness, disability, age, or misuse of drugs or alcohol.

WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE? Carers Leeds offers one- to-one information, advice and support from their city centre offices, in the carer’s own home or in a hospital setting. In addition, they provide a range of activities, including information sessions on legal issues facing carers, personal development workshops, wellbeing days, coffee mornings, day or theatre trips. They try to find ways of giving carers a break from caring and providing an opportunity to meet up with other carers for mutual support.

All activities are published in a free bi-monthly newsletter, which also carries information on local and national policy and events that affect carers. The charity runs the Time for Carers Fund on behalf of Leeds City Council, which can give carers some financial help with the cost of a break or holiday. Carers providing over 35 hours a week can apply once every three years.

Carers Leeds also runs a number of support groups around the city, and provides support for different types of caring, for example, for those looking after someone with Asperger’s Syndrome.

Are You a New Invalid Scooter User?

Despite excellent information provided by the Council and the William Merritt Centre, it can sometimes be difficult to obtain all the facts needed before buying a scooter and installing a hoist in a car.

Tony Chuter, a new scooter user, encountered some of these difficulties and decided to set up a ‘Leeds Invalid Scooter Association’. “The Association will be a source of mutual help, especially to the newly immobile”, said Tony. “Once established, we should be able to negotiate discounts on purchases and exchange information about various outlets which provide for our needs. Although there has recently been a marked improvement in the facilities for the disabled, there seems to be a place for input from those who are actually experiencing problems.”

HIGH ROYDS CEMETERY RENOVATED BY LOCAL

GROUPOn 3rd December 1890 Sarah Ann Walker became the first person to be buried at High Royds Hospital Cemetery.... Alice Ann Wardman was the last on 14th January 1969. In total, 2,861 people were buried in the cemetery.

The Friends of High Royds Memorial Garden have renovated the whole cemetery, including the chapel, and created a memorial garden with seats where visitors can reflect and remember. The work has been funded by voluntary subscription and a major grant from Community Spaces which is part of Groundwork and The Big Lottery Fund.

The chapel will be open by appointment for private groups and contains a memorial register of all those buried there, as well as historic information and photographs of High Royds Hospital.

BURLEY SUMMER FESTIVAL – EIGHT DAYS OF FUN FOR ALL!

This is the third Burley Summer Festival and it seems to get bigger and better each year! Organised by a group of volunteers drawn from across Burley Parish, it promises eight days of fun for all. Once again it includes the popular Classic Vehicle Show. You can look forward to a huge variety of music – from chamber, classical, choral and opera, to jazz, soul and dance. As well as the regular Burley Farmers’ Market, there’s also an Arts and Crafts Market, and an Antiques Roadshow run by local antique dealers.

You can take in drama, art exhibitions, walks, talks, sports, film for children, a Tea Dance, ceilidh and Family Fun Day. Add to this the Beer and Cider Festival, Pork Pie Contest and loads of culinary goodies and you are guaranteed a great time!

BURLEY GARDENERS’ ASSOCIATION ANNUAL

SHOW

Burley Gardeners’ Association Annual Show is on Sunday 28th August at Queen’s Hall, Main Street, Burley in Wharfedale.

Residents of Burley in Wharfedale and Burley Woodhead may enter the Flower, Produce, Wine, Handicraft, Fruit and Vegetable Classes, and anyone can enter the Open and Junior Classes. Entries can be brought to the Queen’s Hall between 10am and 12 noon on the day of the Show. Once again there are new classes in almost every section, so there is something to suit everyone.

Visitors can also enjoy a variety of displays, including an art exhibition by Burley Art Group; a floral art demonstration by Sheila Quin; photographic exhibition by Ian Lamond; gardening and lifestyle gifts by Wharfedale Flowers; and a creative arts display by the Methodist Church Craft Share Group.

At 4pm Mrs Claire Lee, Head Teacher of Burley Oaks School, will present the trophies and prizes to the show winners. The shop, small business or pub chosen as the winner of the Burley in Bloom competition will be presented with the Dick Hargrave Shield. Homemade teas will be served throughout the show and it will conclude with an auction of exhibits at 4.30pm.

SAUSAGE!Six Yorkshire MPs recently gathered at Westminster to show support for their region’s namesake sausage campaign, led by Ilkley butcher, David Lishman, and Welcome to Yorkshire.

Kris Hopkins MP (Keighley), Jason McCartney MP (Colne Valley), Craig Whittaker MP (Calder Valley), Robert Goodwill MP (Scarborough and Whitby), Stuart Andrew MP (Pudsey) and Nigel Adams MP (Selby and Ainsty) got stuck into some Yorkshire Sausage sampling and cast their votes on which of David’s six specially designed bangers they think should be crowned Yorkshire’s official sausage.

“I am particularly proud that the Yorkshire Sausage is being developed in Ilkley and David deserves tremendous credit for his efforts over the past few weeks and months. Roll on Yorkshire Day when the winning sausage is revealed,” said Kris Hopkins MP for Ilkley and Keighley.

WHY A YORKSHIRE SAUSAGE? Lincolnshire, Cumberland and Suffolk all have distinctive sausages named after them: sausages which are rooted in their local history and celebrated across the country as mealtime favourites. But Yorkshire, the biggest county in the UK, known for its high quality produce and farming heritage, does not have a namesake sausage.

WOMEN TAKE THEIR PLACE IN HISTORY

A new Yorkshire-based network to further the study of women’s history was launched at Leeds Trinity University College tin June. The Yorkshire Women’s History Network welcomes members from across the region, men and women, who have an interest in women’s history.

“Women’s history has always been about the hands-on practice of history”, said Professor Karen Sayer, Programme Leader for History at Leeds Trinity, who coordinated the event. “Women were largely hidden from history until the 1970s, in terms of where they were placed in society and also because of the choices made by historians, so the study of women’s history has been a growth area in recent decades.

“This new network will be a great facility for Yorkshire’s historians. It offers an opportunity to meet people with similar interests, pick up tips on research, find out about sources and archives, and share experiences.”

LEARN TO TANGO AND CHA CHA FOR ST GEMMA’S!

For their popular Strictly Learn Dancing event, St Gemma’s Hospice is offering 30 people (15 female/ 15 male) the opportunity to be trained by professional dance teachers from Edmonds Dance Centre, Burley, who are providing their time free.

Now its third year, the event will be held in the ballroom at Leeds Seventeen Restaurant on Friday 11th November. Dancers will be taught the Argentine Tango and Cha Cha Cha and everyone involved will be encouraged to raise a minimum of £250 in sponsorship.

St Gemma’s, based in Moortown, provides specialist medical and nursing care for people with life threatening illnesses, and support for their families too. The care provided is free of charge, so St Gemma’s relies on donations and local fundraising initiatives.

“We already have several contestants lined up”, said event organiser Tara Greatorex. “So, we would encourage people to contact us quickly if they would like to take part.”

SOROPTIMISTS ‘ANY QUESTIONS’ A

GREAT SUCCESS Yorkshire Soroptimists were delighted that in their 75th anniversary year they were chosen to host an episode of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Any Questions’ in Victoria Hall, Saltaire. The broadcast was on 24th June, and was a great success.

The panelists were David Davis conservative MP for Haltemprice and Howden, Mary Creagh MP for Wakefield, Fraser Nelson editor of the Spectator, and Jason Cowley editor of the New Statesman, and the discussions were lively and very entertaining. Questions included: “Why do the perpetrators of crimes appear to have more rights than their innocent victims?”, “Are U-turns a sign of a listening government or a weak government?”

The final question addressed the suggestion by the Royal College of Psychiatrists that people over 65 should reduce their alcohol intake to no more that 11 units per week. During the discussion, Mary Creagh said that this reduction “may not lead to living longer, but it would certainly feel like it!” A poll of the audience indicated that 100% said that the advice would be ignored, and Jonathan Dimbleby declared: “The people of Soroptimist International of Saltaire have spoken!”

High summer is an opportune time to search for two closely related species found sparingly in the Yorkshire uplands.

Stonechats and whinchats are small, chunky, upright birds which like to perch on the top of bushes or tall plants. With their black head and chin, white neck-side patch, reddish-orange undersides and blackish back and tail, male stonechats look very smart. Constantly flicking their tail and moving about, they have a scolding “tsak tsak” call.

Similar in appearance, is the male whinchat though it has a prominent white stripe above the eye and lacks the white neck patch. Females of both species are brownish above and orange-brown below and are best told apart by the pale stripe above the eye on the whinchat. The latter has a persistent alarm cal “yu tek tek”.

While whinchats are summer visitors from Africa, stonechats are resident, though move to the milder coast in winter. They both prefer open cover with low vegetation, typically heaths and moors, but stonechats also like bushy areas near coastal cliffs and whinchats sometimes frequent damp areas such as tussocky grassland and water meadows.

These birds are experiencing contrasting fortunes. Stonechats have increased and spread in recent times though the exceptional conditions late last year seem to have set them back. A sharp decline in numbers of whinchats is as yet unexplained but circumstances in their wintering quarters could be a cause.

They are a lovely plant to include in pots, hanging baskets and borders, and should be taken into the greenhouse for over wintering. Prune back stems to just above the third joint and water only when the stems appear to be drying up until April, then increase to restart growth. Keep them indoors until all danger of frost has passed and harden off before placing outside.

Have a go at growing honeysuckle as a standard, and wisterias, which can be spectacular but need a lifetime of support and regular pruning both summer and winter to keep it compact. The honeysuckle will have more impact when growing along trellises and fencing, plus the scent will be knockout. If training standards in pots use John Innes No.3, as this contains soil which is heavier than peat-based compost.

To train a shrub, plant into a pot when young with a straight sturdy stem cut off the lowest branches so they are flush with the main stem. When it reaches the desired height pinch out the top tip to make the head branch out and form a ball. Keep removing all the buds or branches that appear on the stem, this is one way of growing these plants and leaves room underneath for low growing plants.

In the vegetable garden, you can begin sowing spring cabbage for winter from the middle of the month. Keep the seed beds moist and after about six weeks they will be ready to transplant to the prepared ground. Try some oriental vegetables to use in stir-fries – sow Chinese broccoli and harvest tender young plants whole when flowering shoots appear. Sow a fast growing Chinese cabbage four weeks later – cut the stem leaving about and inch above the ground for re growth. Taller varieties will develop a white tender heart if you hold the leaves together with elastic bands.

With Summer bursting out all over, we started thinking about people going on holiday. Whether it’s for a weekend, a week or two, one of the biggest worries is who is going to look after your pet. As a previous pet owner, I know that pets have ways of punishing their owners for their abandonment. Our cat, Mojo, (so named because when she had her mojo workin’ - i.e. when she was purring – you knew it!) would nag us for hours after we retrieved her. Once she even left a very unwelcome package on our son’s bed in protest. Oh yes, they have ways of making you feel really guilty and they milk it for all it is worth!

What can we do to make this a less stressful experience for our pets and for ourselves? We decided to ask a couple of people who regularly look after people’s pets.

Heather and Bob Winter at Moochin’ the Pooch (www.moochinthepooch.co.uk) are dog lovers with a handle on dog psychology. They aim to keep your pets happy while you’re away, or even while you’re at work. Here are some of their suggestions:

• Make sure your dog has a safe haven of its own, such as an open cage (den) or bed – and if you’re going away make sure you take this to the boarder or kennels.

• A great way to help your dog settle is to sleep with a towel in your bed for a couple of nights, then leave this with your dog (in their bed preferably) when you leave for work or go away – that way they will have your scent with them.

• Don’t make a big fuss when you leave, don’t jangle car keys or alert them to the fact that you are leaving them.

• When leaving your pet to go to work, don’t have the same routine every day as they become conditioned and know exactly when you’re leaving which can cause stress.

• Give your pet a toy which contains treats that they have to work for, and give this to them a few minutes before leaving, this can take their minds off you leaving and they won’t be as stressed.

• Make sure your dog gets enough exercise – this is a great stress reliever.

• Check that your boarder is Council licensed

• You and your pet are unique – find a facility that suits you

• Visit several catteries and see how they are run

• Find out who will actually be looking after your pet

• What food will be fed to your pet

• How clean is the facility

• What is their policy on veterinary treatment

• Can they provide for special needs like diabetic or elderly pets

The main message is: don’t make do, make sure the boarding cattery or kennels you choose meets your expectations and suits your pets’ needs.

Of course, you could decide to leave your pet at home and upset them as little as possible – you don’t abandon completely you understand, you just ask someone like Chris from City Cats and Dogs (www.citycatsanddogs.co.uk) to visit regularly and see to their every need. Bramleycavies Guinea Pig Rescue is a new rescue organisation based in Bramley. Founded by Helen and Christine Broadhead, who are dedicated to rescuing and re-homing ill treated and unwanted guinea pigs. They currently house over 50 guinea pigs, all of which are looking for new homes.

LET’S WALK THE DOG!

Rob Godfrey from Otley recently came up with the brilliant idea of a publishing guide for dog walkers!

Yorkshire Dales: A Dog Walker’s Guide documents 20 circular routes designed with maximum off-lead time and minimum exposure to roads. They vary in length from three to nine miles. Each walk has information on the distance and terrain, livestock likely to be encountered, number and type of stiles and, in an emergency, the nearest veterinary surgery. In addition to the clear, numbered route instructions, each section includes a matching numbered map, information on how to get to the start, places of interest, and local pubs and cafes which welcome dogs.

“I know from my own experience’, says Rob, “that it is hard to be sure, once you are off your home patch, where you can walk safely with your dog without the frustration of getting lost, finding your route blocked with impassable stiles or encountering busy roads. I have put together this collection of dog-friendly walks so that others can discover the breathtaking countryside of the Yorkshire Dales without these frustrations.”

The routes include walks from the picturesque village of Langcliffe onto the surrounding limestone hills; beside tranquil Malham Tarn; along Buckden Rake to Stake Moss; from Arkengarthdale to imposing Fremington Edge; and beside the stunning Aysgarth Falls along the river Ure.

“When you own a dog, walking can be great fun, seeing your best friend enjoying the open spaces, stretching their legs and enjoying all the sights and smells”, says Rob. “All the walks in this book include areas where your dog can be let off the lead for a paddle, a run, and a good sniff around in the woods, fields or open moors. WARRIORS OF THE PLAINS AT LOTHERTON HALL

‘Warriors of the Plains’ at Lotherton Hall, a new touring exhibition from the British Museum, runs until 25th September and gives a fascinating insight into the lives of the warrior societies of the Native Americans.

The exhibition explores the understandings of honour, status and ritual amongst the indigenous peoples of the North American plains from 1800 to the present day, highlighting the relevance of the warrior legacy for contemporary Native American identity.

Unique and fragile material from the British Museum collections will be on display for the first time, including feather headdresses, weapons, military insignia, ledger drawings and a beaded military cap, as well as modern regalia of contemporary Native Americans, or ‘modern warriors’.

Highlights of the exhibition include objects that represent diplomacy and peace treaties, such as pipes and complementary items of bravery and honour, such as clubs and pipe-tomahawks.

The exhibition makes full use of the British Museum’s large American collections, incorporating old photographs and a series of pictures of war dances among contemporary Native Americans.

“This new exhibition will run alongside our already very popular ‘Native Americans of the Plains’ exhibition, which has been delighting visitors with a fascinating look into the life and culture of the first Americans”, said Antonia Lovelace, Curator of World Cultures. “It’s a must for fans of early American history.”

The Hepworth Wakefield, Yorkshire’s major new art gallery, has welcomed its 100,000th visitor - less than five weeks after opening, outstripping all expectations. Visitor numbers now looking to far exceed the first year’s target of 150,000.

Patrick Bateman is a steroid-fuelled yuppie cliché, another prime stud on the Wall Street testosterone carousel. But alpha-male supremacy is by no means assured. Dorsia will not give him dinner reservations. The near-mythical ‘Fisher Account’ remains elusive. Space and time do not bend to his will. He is not yet a destroyer of worlds. He cannot see into the hearts and minds of every man, woman and child on this earth.

He is afflicted with the nihilism of over-accumulation. He fears nothing and values nothing. His goals are unrealistic, and his means of achieving them, impractical. He rests comfortably in a seat of inscrutable power, life shrouded in secrecy, even from friends. He is an unreliable narrator. Did he kill these people or was it all just a 1980s dream sequence like in Dallas? Peel back the deep-pore cleansing facial and the exfoliating body scrub, and what lies beneath?

The book has been labelled misogynistic, and deservedly. ‘Satire’ is no defence. ‘Postmodernism’ is just a cheap trick to avoid having to say you’re sorry. The book makes no apologies, but probably should. It’s a postmodern pop classic as powerful as Phil Collins’ drumming, with moments of tenderness that surpass anything in the Whitney Houston playbook. But at what cost?

Leeds Festival Fringe is a seven day event held across a number of venues in Leeds in the week prior to Leeds Festival, showcasing local talent before the main festival hits town.

This is the second year of the festival and organisers have been overwhelmed by the amount of interest in it. They have received applications to play from all over the UK, Europe and as far away as Australia! And, the vast majority of performers from last year have asked to be involved again.

This year there are two new elements – the first ever Metal Fringe at Empire, and on Saturday 20th August, Fringe Festival will take over the city centre. The main stage will be on Briggate, outside Debenhams, and will feature music, dance, fashion, drama and comedy. The whole event will be broadcasted live by East Leeds FM. IT’S A FIRST! METAL FRINGE 2011 MF2011 (Metal Fringe 2011), part of the Leeds Fringe and the first of its kind in the city, will showcase local talent from the metal music persuasion in the week leading up to Leeds Festival. Eighteen bands from across the city and beyond will come together to play three nights of alternative rock (Friday), metal (Saturday) and hard rock (Sunday), to raise money for Martin House Children’s Hospice.

Amongst the bands playing on the Friday are alternative rockers Down The Machine, who draw inspiration from Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden, whilst Saturday night’s

headlining act are ‘revolutionary Leeds rock metal band’ Mishkin, who recently came third in the Red Bull Bedroom Jam out of 600 bands. Other bands playing over the weekend include KarmaSlave, who will close the festival on Sunday evening.

“Public interest has been tremendous”, said organiser Neil Short. “The number of bands from all over the country applying to play and the response in general has been a little overwhelming! So much so, that as soon as MF2011 ends, I think we’ll start planning MF2012!”

BRIDESMAIDS Directed by: Paul Feig Starring: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Chris O’Dowd

Kristen Wiig, along with Tina Fey, is one of a number of female comics who, having graduated from the fertile comedic breeding ground of Saturday Night Live, is challenging the opinion that women aren’t funny. With this feature, in which she stars and also co wrote, she has scored a triumph and marked herself out as one to watch.

Bridesmaids is also the latest release from Judd Apatow’s production company, the Hollywood comedy impresario behind Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin. As with other Apatow productions, Bridesmaids skillfully balances goofiness, vulgarity and heartfelt sentiment.

Wiig plays Annie, a down on her luck singleton struggling with life’s disappointments and indulging in ill advised sexual dalliances with the wrong kind of guy, notably, dashing douchebag, Ted, played with sublime sleaziness by Jon Hamm, AKA Mad Men’s Don Draper.

When Annie’s lifelong friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph) announces her engagement and asks Annie to be her maid of honour, Annie is made more acutely aware of the lack of direction in her own life while wanting to do the best for her friend.

Things begin to go downhill at the engagement party when Annie is introduced to the simpering, effortlessly stylish Helen, her new rival for best friend status. A hilarious bout of one-up-woman-ship ensues.

As Annie struggles to cope with the numerous challenges of arranging her friend’s bridal shower she is outdone at every turn by the wealthy Helen which eventually leads to Annie’s hysterical meltdown.

Arriving hot on the heels of The Hangover’s same-jokes-different-city sequel/remake, Bridesmaids has inevitably drawn comparisons to Todd Phillips’ boorish stag weekend farce. While The Hangover certainly wasn’t short on laughs, it was more than a little lacking in subtlety. This is where Bridesmaids has the edge and proves itself a smarter, more satisfying film, rising far above the poor standard of generic female oriented chick-flick rom-coms. That said, Bridesmaids can still hold it’s own against it’s more testosterone fuelled counterparts in the gross-out stakes, particularly in one already infamous scene involving an outbreak of food poisoning in a bridalwear showroom.

With believably flawed central characters, witty, nuanced scripting and standout comic performances, especially from Wiig and Mellissa McCarthy as Lillian’s sister-in-law-to-be, Bridesmaids is both howlingly funny and genuinely touching, destined to become a comedy classic.

THE TREE OF LIFE Directed by: Terrence Malick Starring: Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain

With a career spanning four decades, Terrence Malick has established himself as one of the heavyweights of American cinema, emerging onto the scene amid illustrious contemporaries (Scorsese, Coppola et al) with his breakthrough film, Badlands, in 1973.

Since then he has directed just a handful of features, most considered modern classics, and news of a new Malick project now inspires feverish excitement and anticipation in cinephiles the world over.

This latest, The Tree of Life, is a case in point. The trailer alone left me breathless when I watched it a few months ago.

Despite winning the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes festival, The Tree of Life has divided audiences and critics. With its leisurely, almost somnambulistic pacing, astronomical breadth of scope and lofty ambitions, the film has alienated many viewers who deem it too ponderous and dull by half.

To say The Tree of Life is an unconventional movie would be grossly understating the fact. It is hard to imagine a cinematic experience more at odds with the standard blockbuster fare clogging up the multiplexes. I’m sure it only made it into my local Vue cinema due to the A-list stars heading up the cast, this is very much an art film.

The Tree of Life isn’t plot driven and doesn’t rely on dramatic narrative. Instead, it’s a meditative, ethereal piece evoking a tone poem rendered in sound and image.

Through a prism of reminiscence and nostalgia, Sean Penn’s Jack reflects on his 1950’s childhood growing up in the suburbs of Waco, Texas, in particular his relationship with his strict disciplinarian father (Brad Pitt) and his younger brother.

The adult Jack seems adrift, struggling to reconcile his past and gain a sense of his place in the world. While early feminist doctrine asserted that ‘the personal is political’ here Malick makes the personal cosmological, the intimate infinite.

In what many no doubt regard as one of the film’s broader strokes, Malick juxtaposes Jack’s remembrance of his formative experiences with the creation of the universe itself and the development of life on earth. The result is a sort of Proustian 2001: A Space Odyssey (the stunning visuals for these cosmic sequences were provided by veteran effects boffin, Douglas Trumbull, who worked similar magic on Kubrick’s Sci-Fi masterpiece). This lengthy portion of the film, along with some of its more surrealistic touches has proved too much for some (the screening I attended sustained a few walkouts), with the limits of people’s indulgence tested by prehistoric nature documentary scenes (including, yes, dinosaurs). However, while there are those who find it all a bit hard to swallow, even the film’s more out-there elements are consistent with otherworldly, dreamlike quality of the piece as a whole.

As ever with Malick’s work, the film is technically outstanding , sumptuously photographed with intricate, evocative sound design. The visual style in the suburban set scenes recalls the work of American photographers William Eggleston and Gregory Crewdson while a sparse classical score combines with whispered internal monologue voiceover and ambient, distant white noise to further convey a sense of wonder and awe and a yearning to return to lost innocence.

As I’ve said, The Tree of Life frustrates as much as it delights and it’s certainly not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s utterly unlike anything else out there. For me, the risks Malick has taken with this picture have paid off. He has crafted a mesmerizing metaphysical masterpiece.

DRUM MARATHON RAISES £1,600 FOR MND

A couple of months ago we let you know that, rather than partying on his 60th birthday, Steve Carter was going to drum!

Well drum he did........for nine hours! He lined up most of the bands he had played with over the last 20 years – including The Recidivists, Formicarium, Straight Jake, Skeyin, Clifton Drummers, Nick Hall’s Occasional Orchestra, Ookpik, and Loose Covers – and drummed with each, taking just a ten minute break between each one.

The event at Korks Wine Bar was a great success, raising over £1,500 and with the gift-aid on the donations the total should top £1,600. The Motor Neurone Disease Association was delighted and quickly asked Steve what he was planning for his 65th!

Steve would like to thank everyone who helped to make the occasion a great and entertaining day.

OPERA NORTH’S ‘LITTLE VOICES’ SCHEDULED TO

START IN OCTOBER Opera North’s launch of Little Voices recently was a great success with 30 children aged 0-4 and their parents and carers turning up to raise their voices in preparation for the weekly singing and music masking sessions which begin in October.

“Little Voices is an exciting new direction for Opera North”, said Jo Bedford, Education Officer. “The weekly workshops will focus on having fun with the voice and singing. Children

have an amazing ability to replicate and copy what they hear, they will act and react to the music that we will create together. I’m really excited to be a part of such a great new programme and can’t wait to usher in the working week with the sounds of little voices.”

Little Voices begins Monday 10th October at 11am and will run weekly during term time for 0-4 year olds. A selection of the sessions will include a visit from a guest artist introducing the children to different activities such as dance and puppetry. LOCAL AUTHOR PUBLISHES A FAMILY FAVOURITE

Recently, Ann Flint, who lives in Weetwood had her first book published.....30 years after she originally wrote it!

It began life as a bedtime story for her twin daughters who loved theatre and had appeared in numerous plays. They had exhausted all the theatrical children’s books and were complaining. “Don’t worry”, said Ann rather rashly, “I’ll write you one!”

So it began. Every evening after putting them to bed she rushed downstairs to write the next chapter in readiness for the following night – there’s nothing like a deadline to concentrate the mind! When it was finished the girls wanted to read it for themselves, so Ann had it typed up, giving each of them a copy.

Years passed. Then one of her daughters remembered the story and gave it to her own daughters to read. They liked it so much Ann was encouraged to rewrite it and get it published. And, here it is.

Charlotte’s Curtain Call tells the story of a lonely, friendless girl who is bullied at school. Then a new girl arrives and, much to Charlotte’s surprise, becomes her friend. She introduces Charlotte to local theatre classes and Charlotte is hooked. After appearing on stage with the local theatre company, a TV director sees a photograph of the production and, noticing Charlotte, believes she is right for a part in his next production. He invites her to audition.

A great many events conspire to prevent Charlotte from getting to the audition, causing a falling out between herself and Lindsay. Needless to say the misunderstandings are sorted out and all ends well.

“I’ve written several books, which are still in a drawer in my appalling handwriting”, said Ann. “And lots more that I began but never finished. But, this is my favourite because it was written with love for my beloved daughters.”

LEEDS WHO? ‘THE STORY OF A FORGOTTEN RUGBY CLUB’

BY STUART SHEARD Leeds Who? is the story of a rugby union club which, for the majority of its sixty seven years, was called Leeds Chirons. The club played on Soldiers’ Field and had changing rooms in the old stables at Roundhay School. The story reflects some of the changes that took place in rugby union between 1923 and 1990. If you have ever been involved with ‘grassroots’ sport, the events and incidents described in this book will revive memories of a much simpler time, an amateur era, when results were important but there were no league tables to worry about. The game of rugby on a Saturday afternoon and the social activities that followed it were the reasons for playing.

The book attempts to document the way in which the club developed into an important part of the sporting scene in North Leeds in its heyday. By the mid 1970s it was in decline, and by the late 1980s was perhaps no longer relevant as a sporting opportunity. There are contributions from a number of former players and officials, all of whom developed lasting friendships and very powerful memories through their involvement with the club. Some of the memories recounted make it clear just how much of an impact sport can have on peoples’ lives.

LEEDS ROLLER DOLLS HUNT FOR NEW HOME

Leeds Roller Dolls, West Yorkshire’s premier roller derby league, are looking for a warehouse space for their demanding training schedule. Formed in 2007, the team have gone from strength to strength and is one of the most highly regarded teams in what must be the nation’s fastest-growing sport. They are currently celebrating a recent convincing victory over Royal Windsor Rollergirls.

As the league expands and takes on new members, Leeds Roller Dolls’ need for a suitable training ground has become increasingly urgent. The league is appealing for help in locating a warehouse space of 7,884 square ft, large enough for a standard roller derby track. They currently trains three times a week, for a total of eight hours but are looking to expand on that.

Roller derby is an all-female, full-contact roller-skating sport, recently popularised by the release of the Hollywood film Whip It. The league is a non-profit organisation. If you can help, please contact [email protected]

Six members of the City of Leeds diving squad represented Team Great Britain at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai (16 – 31 July), making up over half the Great Britain squad.

Divers Jack Laugher, Sarah Barrow, Alicia Blagg, Jenny Cowen, Rebecca Gallantree and Hannah Starling are all part of the 11-strong Team GB squad to have successfully qualified to take on the best in the world in the biggest international diving event of the year.

The squad was finalised following British Gas National Diving Championships at the Aquatics Centre at the John Charles Centre, where the City of Leeds divers dominated, claiming 16 medals. The women’s team claimed the overall trophy for the ninth major national event in a row, whilst the men’s team scooped the overall team prize for the first time since 2004.

This was based largely on the success of 16-year-old Jack Laugher, who followed his stunning performance in beating world champion Tom Daley and setting a new British record in the process in the National Cup in February, with another victory in the men’s three-meter individual event.

The City of Leeds divers are all part of Leeds City Council’s Diving Training Scheme overseen by senior diving coach Adrian Hinchliffe and former world champion Edwin Jongejans.
