1 Dear Families, The staff and I are most grateful for the time we had together on Monday so we could learn the process of putting ‘faces on the data’ in order to focus on learning growth for all students at St Joseph’s. The school’s Leadership Team introduced a new process, developed by Canadian educationalist, Dr Lyn Sharratt. It was truly a very rewarding day. Our learning will continue in staff meetings throughout the year. Dates and Events to note: Please keep our Confirmation candidates in your prayers as they continue their preparation this week with the Reflection Day at Don Bosco today, and practise on Thursday which will also include a visit from Monsignor Tony Ireland. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Friday 14th June at 6.30pm. Program Support Group (PSG) meetings will be held on June 7th and 11th. These meetings are for families of students who receive adjustments to the classroom learning program. A note with online booking details went home last week. If you require a PSG meeting and you have not made a booking, please contact the school. It is time for us to gather some feedback about the transition process our Prep families experienced as they started at St Joseph’s. We are always looking to improve and would love to invite as many Prep parents as possible to be part of a Prep Community Conversation. Please join us on Friday 14th June at 9.00am in the Junior Learning Community. The Prep students will lead the prayer as we gather to begin our conversation. A cup of tea will be provided afterwards and you will be on your way by 10.00am. We would love to see as many Prep parents as possible. Winter sports will now happen for our Year 5/6s on Monday 17th June. Parents are most welcome to attend these activities and your support is always well received. The Lighthouse Project will culminate in an expo which will run on Tuesday 11th June at St Joseph’s College at 6pm. This will showcase the Year 6 boys’ films, debates and podcasts that they have been making with their year 10 mentors. The next School Advisory Council meeting will take place on Tuesday June 18th at 6.30pm in the Conference Room. Please remember to sell your Great Community Raffle tickets to support technology across the school. Sustainability Inquiry Our 3/4 learners are making explicit links to their faith as they develop their understandings around the important role they, and their families, have in protecting God's creations for future generations. Students have been sharing their families' efforts to assist the planet by discussing home composting, worm farms and sustainable gardening practices. Please remember to help our Junior Learners to reach their goal of zero waste on Wednesdays! To add to their learning, the Junior classes will be attending an excursion to CERES tomorrow, Thursday 6th June. ****Supervision of students at St Joseph’s School is from 8.45am until 3.45pm NEWSLETTER NO: 16 TERM 2 WEEK 7 Wednesday 5th June 2019 DATES TO REMEMBER DATES TO REMEMBER DATES TO REMEMBER DATES TO REMEMBER JUNE JUNE JUNE JUNE 5th World Environment Day Confirmation Reflection Day Lysterfield Tennis Clinic all Classes 6th P-2 Excursion 7th PSG Meetings Assembly 2.40pm 9th Pentecost Sunday 10th Queen’s Birthday Public Queen’s Birthday Public Queen’s Birthday Public Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday no students Holiday no students Holiday no students Holiday no students 11th PSG Meetings Lighthouse Project Expo at St Joseph’s College 12th Tennis Clinic all classes 13th Confirmation Practice Day @ St Joseph’s 14th Prep Community Conversation 9am JLC Sacrament of Confirmation 6.30pm 16th Trinity Sunday 17th Winter Sports Year 5/6 18th SAC Meeting 6.30pm 19th Tennis Clinic all classes 20th World Refugee Day 21st Assembly 2.40pm 23rd Body and Blood of Christ 27th Semester Reports & SLPs to go home 28th Feast of the Sacred Heart Mass @ 9.10am Term 2 Concludes 3.25pm JULY JULY JULY JULY 15th Term 3 Commences 212 Boronia Road (P.O Box 505) BORONIA 3155 Phone: 9762 3275 Fax: 9761 0915 Email: [email protected]. edu au. The amount of time we spend on our phones or devices has become a bit of a concern for me lately. My husband said to me this morning that he read an article that asked the reader, “What is the last thing you stroke before you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning?” And the answer was OUR PHONES!! I’m rather alarmed when I’m in social situations and people have their heads buried in their phones rather than including themselves in the present moment. I am certainly not saying I am innocent, as I do it myself. I found the below article recently and wanted to share it with you:

“ARE YOU PRESENT or are you a ghost in your own life? What happened to the world? Wherever you go, you see it. How addicted everyone is. How much time the phone takes from us. I’ll be the first to admit. I have an addiction. If I forget my phone going to the store, I get stressed. If I go upstairs in my own house without it, I feel upset. And my job as an Influencer makes it even worse. But it’s not just me. Big family dinners, friends hanging out. Parents at the playground. I see it all the time, everyday. We are not present anymore. We’re living an era where capturing moments using our phones are more important than actually

living these moments with whoever is beside us. We are addicted on constantly documenting everything. And it needs to stop! My new year’s resolution was to use my phone less. To put it away 100% when Liam comes home from kindergarten and don’t look at it before the kids sleep. And stay more off on the weekends. I have to admit we tried many times but fell back after some weeks. So today we are starting again. And I hope reaching out with this picture, some of you will join me. Your cell phone has already replaced your camera, calendar and alarm clock... Don’t let it replace your friends and family.”

With the Long Weekend coming up, it could be a perfect time to try and be without your phone. I know I’m going to try! Let me know your thoughts! Enjoy the rest of the week!

Yours in Wellbeing,

Eloise Ellis [email protected]

FROM THE ART ROOMFROM THE ART ROOMFROM THE ART ROOMFROM THE ART ROOM

Thank you so much for your donations of the recycled materials over the last few weeks. We have plenty of

materials now so will not require anymore at this stage.

Prep/1/2’s have begun turning plastic bottles and cereal boxes into fish and turtles. In the coming weeks, our 3-6’s will be creating flowers and more fish using CD’s, lids, bottles and recycled cardboard. We are discussing

the importance of keeping plastic out of the ocean as part of the sustainability inquiry topic.

Our Prep-4 students have been busy learning all about printmaking! We have used recycled bubble wrap,

leaves and foam. Enjoy the pictures of the wonderful learning that has been happening in art this term.
