We could still use a few more volunteers for our youth camps in the areas of:- camp nurse (1st aid/CPR required) for high school & middle school weeks- help with food prep & dishes - and perhaps a couple of counselors We have the basics covered, but extra hands are always welcome. And we keep getting more campers registering each day, so we may need a bigger team! Our

youth camps run Monday afternoon – Friday lunch; If you are able to come for just a day or two to help out or stay for the whole week, we would love to have you join us! the age groups & dates are as follows:• High School Camp, August 5-9 • Middle School Camp, August 12-16 • Elementary School Camp, August 19-23If you are interested in joining team OCCC for one of next month’s youth camps, please contact me ASAP. I would love to talk with you about where you might want to serve. But I started out to tell you about our fall calendar & needs! Frankly it’s hard for me to think past all the prep for and fun of summer camp, but I know I won’t be in the office much over the next month and you need to make plans, so here are the groups we currently have booked that we would love to have you join us in serving… August 30-Sept. 2 (Sat. breakfast – Mon. breakfast) - Christian Life Center (Bend) - family camp. Sept. 27-29 (Fri. dinner – Sun. breakfast) – The Redmond Assembly of God - women’s retreat.Oct. 4-6 (Fri. dinner – Sun. breakfast) – FBC Prineville - women’s retreat.Oct. 18-20 (Fri. dinner – Sun. breakfast) – Bend Church of the Nazarene - women’s retreat with almost 100 women!Oct. 26 (Saturday lunch only) - Three local churches are gathering for a women’s day event. Nov. 1-3 (Friday dinner – Sunday breakfast) – The Calvary Chapel - women’s retreat.

One last thing…once August is over and we settle into the weekend retreat season, we have a number of projects we will be working on. Dates for volunteer help on these are flexible, and we can use all types of skills: painting, plumbing, electrical, minor repair, general muscle, cleaning, door & screen repair, etc. A couple of exciting projects we have going are:- Putting doors between the cabin rooms – this will allow the 2 rooms of each cabin to remain separate (like they are now), or be locked open to create one larger room. This is an especially important upgrade for youth camps, because it makes the camper-counselor ratio for a cabin group much more realistic than it is now. We have the doors already here (God provided in a big way), and are anxious to get going on this project! - Creating a small group space in the lower camp area – this project is already underway and will include a guy’s & girl’s bunkhouse/dorm, meeting room, and community kitchen for smaller groups who want to do their own cooking. This will provide a lower priced camp option as well as increase our number of beds and allow us to serve multiple groups at the same time. *This is the meeting area that the Oct. 26 day event will be using, which gives us a push to have it ready by then.

We love our volunteers, and the way the OCCC camp family is growing. Thank you for being a part of what God is doing!Sincerely,Cheree Davis, Administrations/Retreats541-462-3016, www.ochococamp.org, [email protected]

by Becki DodenEven though summer is almost over, wearing sunscreen and sun protection clothing along with skin checks are something we need to do year-round. Most think sunscreen is simply used to prevent sunburns, but sunscreen protects the skin from harmful UV rays. Skin cancer develops when DNA is damaged beyond what your body can repair. Some practitioners will include skin exams with routine check-ups; you can also schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. Self-skin checks are also recommended about once a month. Look at skin in a well-lit room in front of a full-length mirror using a hand-held mirror to look at areas that are hard to see. If a person takes the time to examine their body for the tell-tale sign of skin cancer, newly formed or changing moles, skin cancer can be detected early making it easier to treat. Any new mole should be examined by a professional. There are three types of skin cancers: squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Use the “ABCDE rule” to look for some of the common signs of melanoma: • Asymmetry: If one half of the mole does not appear to match the other

• Border: If the edges of the mole are ragged or appear overly irregular• Color: If the mole is multiple colors or has the appearance of being shaded brown, black, white, red, or tan• Diameter: If the mole itself is larger than the eraser on a common pencil• Evolution/Elevation: If the mole appears to be changing in qualities or is elevated noticeably from the skin.Melanoma is a serious, potentially fatal, matter that is preventable with early detection. Don’t allow yourself the risk! When you head outside don’t forget UPF clothing and sunscreen! Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapplied every two hours or after being in the water. Now go enjoy beautiful central Oregon!

For many years, our Foundry Family has enjoyed refreshments after church provided by our hospitality ministry. This ministry has been lead by Loretta Barram and she has done an excellent job! After many years of service, Loretta is stepping down. Thank you, so much, Loretta (and Doug), you are loved and appreciated. That being said, this leaves a hole in our Hospitality Ministry. If you are interested in leading this ministry, please let Joy know. Loretta has a wonderful team that has helped each week, but we could use a few more team members to join this minsitry. You can contact Joy at 541-382-3862 or [email protected], to get some more information about this ministry.

HIGH SCHOOL [email protected] KIDZTOWN [email protected]

by Sara MillerAs a child, some of my favorite memories center around my family and the service they willingly made for our church. My dad actually built the second story addition on Pilot Butte Christian Church (now Real Life Church on 27th). My mom made a butterscotch monkey bread for my 3rd grade Sunday School one morning – I can still remember the smell and the sticky fingers we had sitting on those metal folding chairs. There were SEVERAL mornings of major snow (before we started calling it Snowpocalypse here in Bend) when my dad would take several showers on a Sunday morning due to all the shoveling of the FEET of snow that fell overnight, yet we’d still meet for worship on Sunday morning. We had many summer evenings with a house full of people as we did fish fry’s with the Alaskan halibut brought home from a business trip – there was so much fish that we HAD to have our church friends over to eat it all! And my earliest memory of singing was joining my dad on a duet “I Am a Promise” and he had to pull a chair out of the choir loft for me to stand on next to him behind the pulpit. These memories are so precious to me. My parents taught me by their example. I could list MANY more ways our family pitched in and served together, in a variety of areas. But the takeaway that was deeply instilled within me was that we serve in the church. As I continued on to undergraduate studies at Milligan College, Tennessee, our motto there was “servant-leadership.” This theme of serving others has been a constant thread woven throughout my life, and I’m

High & Middle Schoolby Joy WaybrightWe have had so much fun with our Middle and High Schoolers this Summer. From hiking & splunking to floating the river & eating great food.

passionate about helping others see the tremendous benefits that come from serving. While in college, I had a Sunday School teacher who was wildly popular for his teaching style. His class grew from 30 kids to over 200 in the brief years I sat under his leadership. He knew that college students were BUSY – studying, college responsibilities, finals, dating, falling in love – these all take TIME and he knew that the hour each week he had students’ rapt attention was vitally important. In his passionate prayer time with us, he would often pray “God, please compensate these young people for their time spent here studying Your Word.” And you know what? My time WAS always compensated. It seemed like God multiplied the hours of my day – knowing that I had honored Him with attending worship in the midst of a busy collegiate schedule, He always assisted me with the studying or practicing for the day. It was truly a visual representation of Luke 6:38: “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”I challenge our Foundry families, as we look toward the fall and scheduling volunteers to fill our Kidztown classes, to prayerfully consider what your children might think when they don’t see you serving. Habits are often “caught” rather than taught; are we helping our children catch the vision for serving the next generation? When our kids see us willingly (not grudgingly) serving the body of Christ it sends the important message that while we do come to church to worship corporately as a family, to enjoy the rest that Sabbath provides, we also come to church to serve the body of Christ in true Koinonia (Greek for communion with others) spirit.

We still have a few activities for our youth in August. We have 4 of our High School kids heading to Camp Attitude then Family Camp and the most important activity will be our Move Up Monday on August 26th. This is the day we invite all of our new incoming middle schoolers to join our youth group for a great time of food and games. We will be enjoying a great BBQ and welcoming our new youth to the group. We will start at the church at 6pm and finish up around 8pm. Conact Joy for more info. If you are interested in being a part of the youth ministry team this Fall, contact Joy.
